    This is all courage. I am in awe of what you are doing, how brave you are to fight through the pain and keep moving forward. I am rooting for you every day. You have total strangers who are invested in your safety, so be careful. You have nothing to prove except that you are having a great walk in the woods and you will finish alive. Much love.

Cool photo at the end of the video at Station 19 of your name listed with the other through hikers who have passed through so far this year. You all are ahead of the bubble.

    Hey, great to meet you on trail today, Nightshift! I'm bedded down in my Subaru Outback now at a Cracker Barrel restaurant parking lot, so can't watch this whole video now but was dismayed to see you were having such knee trouble. I'm guessing you were much better when I saw you today and I'll go back and watch the rest of this video when I get home to Boston. As I mentioned, Captain Jack was super happy that his knee issue seemingly disappeared but I haven't watched his latest videos to see if that was sustained. But I hope that offers optimism for your knee. Happy, healthy hiking in your ambitious itinerary for 2024! -MP3

      I left part of the story out because it was to hard to edit, but I will fill you in. That morning where it was raining outside and I explain I have to walk into the rain at 5 am and hiked a 30 mile day. The real reason I hiked the 30 mile day was because that same guy sh*t directly on the trail, literally on the pebble trail, TWICE. I tracked his size 12 military tread boot prints for 1.5 days over 30 miles before I saw that he hopped off at a road junction to a hostel. Because he left at 3 am, he was 7 hours ahead of me and I never caught him on trail before I passed him. However, I did give him the trail name shit-&-run. And told the other people on trail his trail name is shit & run, and to the watch out for the guy with the blue sleeping bag. Sorry to all the other innocent people out there who have a blue sleeping bag but the collateral damage is worth it m 😂

      I will do a gear review before the whites once I have 1800 miles walked with it. A gear review before the gear is intimately known is worthless; all these UA-camrs are out here talking about gear they never hiked with to manipulate you into buying stuff you don’t neeed because they make money off of it. In my review i will emphasize all the things I mailed home and how very few things are actually necessary. Will make sure to post one for you!

    Your videos are some of my favorite! Thanks for sharing. I hope you achieve your goal! I know a lot of ppl are all about, "hike your own hike! Don't worry about miles, focus on the smiles! All that matters is that you're happy!" Etc. Personally not a fan of that mentality. Im planning a thru hike for 2026. I absolutely plan to have fun, but im doing it bc i want to do something hard. I want to achieve something great. I want to see how far i can push myself. Stay strong, listen to your body, and go for it!
    As for the jerk in the shelter... if you're willing to take two cents from a stranger on the Internet, my understanding of trail etiquette is that if you are coming in past hiker midnight, set up a tent instead of crashing the shelter. I know in some sections you're required to stay in the shelter and maybe that's where you are. Either way, he was out of line being such a grouch.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, i think most people have an image in their head that im camping and not hiking. Camping is walking 5 miles and cooking ribeye steak with rosemary potatoes. Hiking is moving long distances thru nature where you see everything. For me, hiking is the destination. It’s fascinating, when I tell people in normal life of the dangers and challenges I faced on the Arizona trail, they get uncomfortable and break eye contact because they were imagining I somehow cooked steak moving 5 miles a day across the desert. No, I became nature for 45 days. Anyone who thinks I’m arrogant for saying that, please go hike the Arizona trail in 45 days without a tent and come back and talk to me.
      As far as the hiker midnight, I don’t think that is true, but I will actually ask around to see if I’m wrong about that. I’ll let you know if I hear differently.
      And that is awesome, you are going to have a blast in 2026.

    Trekking poles have saved my ass more than once on trail…especially here in PA on the really rocky sections. It’s important to hold them the correct way too though-so you can brace yourself IF you do crash.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  9 місяців тому +2

      100% true, trekking poles held properly are not the even held, they hang off your wrist and catch you if you fall. Anyone who isn’t sure how to use them should watch a video on it. Yesterday I slipped on an iced log and fell sideways so quickly I could have broken an arm, but my trekking pole caught my wrist and literally peopled me up, I did not even grab the handle, it just held me up. This what you are talking about.

    Hiking a trail like the AT seems to carry the opposite aspects of what I personally seek out when choosing a hike. But everyones goals are different. I seek natural beauty and challenges in solitude (for the most part). Others seek different things.

    So pleased to see an update, your vlogs are very unique. I think that's because, although you have a lot going on (knee, weather, repetitive trail) you notice things and are very reflective. The shot of the sunset on the snow was stunning and waiting to see the owl fly and being honest about your difficulties. And there's action shots of falls!!!
    Every sympathy for the knee pain, I have done similar to myself and only recently do I actually feel like it's healing after months, (but I'm much older so don't think that's a prediction for you). It's just so annoying and kind of pathetic, just why won't the bugger stop hurting? One can keep going but why does it have to hurt so much? It's just wasting my time here.
    Enjoyed the story about the grumpy camper, the AT does seem to be a lot about "tramilies" and sociability. But sometimes the "happy hikers" narrative is a bit tiresome, some people are just a'holes.
    And why so many mountains?
    In the UK, trails/paths/routes are to get you from A to B, not detour up a mountain every five minutes. Shame the Romans never got to the US, they would have sorted that out straight away.
    Anyway, good luck for the next portion of the trail. Looking forward to you seeing 5stack, it makes so much sense that the two of you got on so well.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  9 місяців тому +4

      I was worried I’d sound too negative. It seems every other blogger takes the approach of highlighting the beauty. But I find myself mostly in bad moods, so that’s what I’m showing because it’s real. That being said, just because I’m in a bad mood and uncomfortable does not at all mean I regret doing this or that I will regret doing this once looking back kn it. As hot wheels once explained to me, hiking taught him that it is possible to be uncomfortable and still be happy. In fact, the discomfort frames the intensity of the joy when you are seated in front of the wood burning stove. And 5stack is awesome.

    • @excession3076
      @excession3076 9 місяців тому

      @@JaruWalks
      I don't think it comes across that you are in a bad mood, more that you don't put up a front. And "highlighting the beauty" hmmm, can't help but think that sometimes for some hikers that's more for the "engagement" or lack of anything else to say. You can tell, IMO, which are genuine though.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  9 місяців тому +2

      @@excession3076 you are absolutely right. I’m not critiquing all the other vloggers. @@lenoredisman3192I understand but if you leave them on and hike 25 miles every day you’re going to break bones in your feet after a few weeks. Because of the time of year, I’m not walking through miles of ice, it is solid ice for 300 yards, then gravel, then back to 500 yards of ice, then mud, then 70 yard of ice, repeat all day for 25 miles. On the Arizona trail there were multiple nights where coyotes surrounded me howling right at from 20 feet away, louder than a marching band, howls so loud they echoed off the mountains. The first night was one of the most horrifying experiences of my life, I did not sleep. But i soon realized the consequence of not sleeping is also highly destructive. Something in me eventually snapped, and I said if they actually do come attack me, i welcome them with open arms. But when they find my body, there will be at least five of those assholes bodies found around mine. That same attitude i take into the AT shelter. If you want to kill me or a bear wants to kill me, i welcome you with open arms to try, and you probably will succeed, but I’m going to take at least one of your eye sockets out before you get me. As gruesome as it is, that is how I sleep. Try me.

    I'm very late to your party. Just found you and getting caught up on your videos. I think it's very disrespectful to get into camp late and wake up other hikers. Many people are very light sleepers and when woken it's difficult for us to get back to sleep. You need to to sleep as far away as possible from others if your going to night hike. Like your vids so far, but disagree with your stance on this issue.

    • @JaruWalks
      @JaruWalks  2 місяці тому

      @@boblacourse1430Think about it- there are people who hike late, and people who wake up early. When the early risers get up, they wake everybody up just like the late arrivers do. My point is, to insist that everybody hike on your schedule when using a public shelter is clearly a dysfunctional mindset. The public shelter culture on the AT runs on a rule of: live and let live, but generally keep the noise level down while anybody sleeps. It couldn’t function any other way.

    • @JaruWalks

      To add to it, in the 100+ AT shelters I’ve slept in, I’ve only once had somebody tell me I shouldn’t sleep in a lean-to while night hiking. It was this guy, who subsequently dropped two bowel movements on the trail for me the next morning. The guy was clearly dysfunctional.
