I love it. Not theatre but a sober reminder of the people pushing back. Keep all your traditions. I had the good fortune to visit London three times in my life, so far. Hope to return one day.
The need for the tradition to continue was reinforced by the pre civil war experience of Charles 1 going into the chamber to arrest MPs who had displeased him. This ceremony reafirms the separation of powers between the monarch and the legislature and its government. Which in turn restricts the ability of each branch to try to take too much power , and do truly stupid or illegal things. America bizarrely wrote a constitution , thats now practically unchangeable, that recreated a more powerful monarch in the form of the President, blurred the independence of the courts, and allowed both parts of the legislature to block each other. The British constitution evolved over time to allow the monarchy to just indirectly put parameters on government action, The government doesnt ultimately control the police, judges, intelligence services or those who oversee recruitment to them and the civil service, They can say no, because they are crown servants answering to the crown, national interest and law, not political appointees , or sackable by politicians. Parliament has evolved so that seat boundaries are set by independent bodies, not openly gerrymandered as they used to be here too,, And the House of Lords has been left with no control over spending but with the ability to suggest ways to improve legislation, ask questions and comment or to cause delay in some areas if it feels the need, Its essentially a constitution that creates a separation of powers that works, is relatively democratic, has checks and balances that work, and does not end up with nothing being done because the legislatures and President cant agree. And behind the 17th century pageantry it can continue to evolve.

But it is not silly at all. England does not have a writen constitution like the USA, in is none verbal and based upon common law tradition and presidence. Black Rod is a reminder to the monarch as to the limitations of their power, and the soveriegnty of Parliament.
