    Roadblock 3a: Used Vehicle Availability.
    I know you covered cost, and the increasing availability at lower prices from other manufacturers, but there are lots of people who can only ever afford older used cars - the kind you can pick up for under £2k. It will take at least a decade of widespread use by new buyers for EV's to be available in that range, and until then we're stuck with internal combustion no matter how much we'd like to switch. The long-term cost might be lower, but the initial cost of any new vehicle remains a huge and insurmountable barrier for some.
    Also thumbs up for Kryten!

      I agree, it's when there's a mature used market for electrics, we'll finally see mass adoption.

      The issue those customers will run into is a reducing amount of gas stations. As the amount of Gas customers drops away.

      My guess for the future by then is that cars will be more shared, subscribed (pay per use / ride) or leased than actually bought or owned. People will consume mobility according to their specific needs and situation. Like your (smart) phone.

    Our apartment building recently installed a 120v outlet in the public garage for my M3 spot. I pay $19 flat per month for the electricity.. I live in DC and drive less than 20 miles per day. The building management is very supportive and sweet. Not every apartment building have public garage and have supportive owners tho, still hard to find.

      As electric cars become popular chargers will become “features” owners can use to draw in renters.

    • @johnwang9914
      @johnwang9914 6 років тому

      The problem in colder climates is that apartments with outdoor parking already have 110 volt outlets however they often put several outlets on a circuit because the outlets are for block heaters which only consume 50 watts per car. There will no doubt be some idiot who will buy an EV, plug it into these outlets and when winter comes and everyone else plugs in their block heaters, the circuit will trip and everyone on the circuit will be late for work. A few apartments with assigned outdoor parking wire the parking lot's outlet to the circuit breaker inside the apartment in order for the apartment management to not have to pay the power bill for the block heaters but then power theft would be an issue given how close the lots are and how each outlet has two sockets, people often ignore their neighbour plugging the block heater into the wrong outlet as accidental but charging an EV makes it a more serious issue.

    • @dabotz_draws
      @dabotz_draws 6 років тому

      @@johnwang9914 Hypothesis - if power theft becomes problem, someone will propose to put the power output for the EV charge after some kind of remotely activated circuit breaker, one that will close the circuit only after completing some kind of authentication /shake hand with its owner's car.
      A counterpart in the vehicle, that doesn't draw power unless it sees it is drawing from a "[my] EV charge authorized output" would solve the accidental "plug in the neighbour's block heather" issue.
      It shouldn't be more complicated than, say, having Ethernet over the power cables (in fact, that would be a nice starting point to develop the thing).
      Only thing, it would be nice if they already started talking about standardization of these details...

    • @justintempus7406
      @justintempus7406 5 років тому

      This is old news, but in a real cold climate (Fairbanks Alaska), the draw for block heaters for a full sized truck is more like 1100 watts. That's 800-1000 for the block, 100-150 for transmission, similar for the oil pan, and however much for the trickle charger or battery heater consume. 50 watts wouldn't even get my oil warm enough to flow at -50.

      Again the fixation with speed?
      You do realise that 95% of drivers would use the potential, and probably couldn't handle the full power of a car that "goes like a Tesla"?
      Even current Diesel cars accelerate as fast as many "exotic" cars did 40 years ago.

    • @robsmith1a
      @robsmith1a 6 років тому +1

      I love my Zoe but it definitely could do with more power. If a car in front is doing 40 mph I have to have a very long straight ahead to overtake safely because the acceleration really tails off above 50 mph (the new version of the Zoe may have fixed this issue though). I'm not bothered about power like I used to be (I had a V8 supercar years ago and very fast bike). Having said that the Zoe is great around town and the only thing I don't like is that the weight can always be felt (over bumps and the braking distance is definitely longer than in a small ICE car). My general comment was that the Zoe is built to a price and therefore has less bells and whistles than a more expensive car though the excellent range makes it a compelling choice for me. I drive within the speed limit but would not turn down more acceleration unless it became ludicrous.

Total capacaty stays the same. This is what we are doing in Holand. For every 4 street lights you can add one `descent speed` charger.

    Transportation needs a massive rethink. "Your car spends 90% of its time parked". Just 10% of its life doing what it was built to do. There has got to be a better way.
    A shared fleet of autonomous vehicles. At just 10% utilization it would suggest that there are ten times more cars than are realoy needed. That's not quite correct since utilization probably jumps to 30-40% during morning and evening rush hours and maybe as most 1-2% during the mid-night to 4am slot. But that still means the current fleet is 2.5 to 3 times too big. It would be easy to cut the number of cars in half and throw on a few more buses & subways to be really sure during the rush hours.
    The fleet can be made up of a range of sized vehicles. The vast majority, probably 90% could be single seat pods with about as much room again for cargo. Another 8% of 4 or 6 seater vehicles for family or carpools. 2% panel trucks for those very infrequent household moves and Ikea shopping sprees.
    There aught to be a rethink of intercity travel. As it is each and every person who travels medium intercity distances has to occupy themselves with keeping their vehicle between the lane markings. Longer trips are almost always by air. Trains can not only go much faster than highway travel they also completely free up travellers to rest or other activities. Trains have a much higher chance of electrification. Trains are much more energy efficient given their ultimate in tail-gating travel. They can be much safer when tracks are properly instrumented.

    • @-whackd
      @-whackd 6 років тому +1

      Lenard Segnitz you mentioned some good things, but I wouldn't compare rush hour times from now compared to the future. Most cities don't charge any penalties for driving at rush hour, and therefore too many people drive all at once and traffic is created. If we make it completely free to travel at the same time, then of course we will get a lot of traffic. We suffer from traffic because of a lack of price system.
      However, mobility as a service providers will charge fees based on demand. This will naturally reduce traffic at our current peak times and distribute traffic to other times, based on individual economizing. For example, most delivery bots will probably run during the cheapest times, rather than driving at peak times.

    I'm just worried about the "Model 3 is the iPhone of cars" analogy. EVs are already "mainstream" from *MANY* manufacturers. I'd argue that the Nissan Leaf was the "iPhone of cars" - it was the first actual *mass market* EV. Tesla always struck me as "the Blackberry of EVs" - an analogy that would have been a compliment when Tesla started. A new company that revolutionized a market that technically existed already, but was ultra-niche. They made it "mainstream niche" for a certain clientele. Tesla has been similar.
    I hope Tesla can deliver on everything they want (same with SpaceX,) but there's more competition in cars than rockets. As soon as Ford, GM, and Toyota all decide to actually go "full bore" EV, Tesla will have a tough time keeping up. Sure, they'll still be the "halo brand" (much as Apple is,) but they won't be the "mainstream #1 brand" (just as Apple isn't. Samsung and Huawei both outsell Apple.)
    Lastly, the model 3 isn't "mainstream" yet. It won't be until the $35,000 model is actually shipping, and purchasable without waiting months or years. Right now, it's still an "early adopter" car. It's just one that built up demand over a couple years of selling before it shipped. Imagine if Apple announced the iPhone X three years ago, and was only now finally shipping in significant quantities.
    (And now I'm prepared to be flamed to death by Tesla fanatics - proving the Apple analogy.) I am not anti-Tesla by any stretch, I'm just a realist. I would love to own a Tesla. But I'm not willing to put down a multi-thousand-dollar deposit on a vehicle I won't get for months or years, that I can't even test drive. (I can't afford the currently-available model.) Note that I'm not against pre-ordering things - I have had a preorder in on an EV since before the Model S even had a factory announced - that will finally be delivered later this year. But I only had to put down $100, and the vehicle only costs $13,000.

    The Guy who said that EVs are 80% efficient is being deceptive. The power plant which produces the electricity is not 100% or even 80% efficient so, on its own, it is completely uninteresting whether EVs make use of 80% of the electricity produced since it all depends on how the electricity is produced. That doesn't mean that EV's cannot be more efficient than vehicles running on hydrocarbon but one shouldn't try to use a deceptive and overhyped presentation of facts to convince people that this is so since it will only procduce distrust in the long run.

    • @shin8327
      @shin8327 6 років тому +1

      In short, yeah. Because it's far far less pollution.
      But don't do it for environmental reasons. Already in the Europe, wind power is cheaper than nuclear (though let's be clear, nuclear produces less co2 overall) and they'll be cheaper than fossils pretty soon.
      It's happening already anyway. Just google which countries use renewables and how much. Yesterday the UK used 40% of renewables (60% if you include nuclear as a low carbon source). They're still 2nd to the US in terms of carbon per capita but in terms of decarbonising the grid, they're making progress.

    • @Markle2k
      @Markle2k 6 років тому +2

      Last question first, yes. Even a dirty coal plant into an EV is cleaner than the transportation and refining chain that gets the fossil fuel remains out your tailpipe.
      Here is the killer app for EVs. You don't have to replace the entire fleet of cars to clean up emissions further. You just start replacing the obsolete and dirty electricity generation plants with cleaner ones.
      As shin8327 pointed out, wind is now getting so cheap that it is cheaper to shut down a coal plant than to keep it on the grid. Solar is cheaper in many locations. And, with a lot of electric cars, you can get lots of storage for the grid for those times when it needs it without needing to dig into any one person's car's range very deep at all. Remember, your electric car can power your house for nearly a week with no assistance from the grid. Further, it turns out that this microcycling of the car's battery is actually good for its longevity.

    Joe, I love your channel, but if you could address the following questions in vblog form, I would be much obliged. Could we take a look at our electricity grid and see how much strain millions of EVs will put on it and how much we would need to spend to upgrade it in order to handle the additional load (figure about 2 million vehicles). Also, since energy has to be burned in order to create this electricity, what is the difference in the Carbon Footprint between the electric cars and regular gasoline powered vehicles that have simply been outfitted to increase fuel efficiency. Thirdly, all the additional demand will increase the cost of electricity, so we'll probably need a realistic estimate of savings between the two. I realize there are many variables in these questions and I have deliberately left it vague in order to simplify it for your purposes if you intend to take this project on. Thank you.

Quiet, fast, fewer parts to fail (although admittedly less repairable by the average person compared to older ICE's), fill the trunk or tow a trailer with powerwalls and solar panels, set up and charge during the day and drive at night! And all the gas cars will be stranded once all the fuel in abandoned cars and gas stations goes bad.

    After the Bell breakup in 1982 my mom FINALLY let me have a touch tone for my teen line. I'd been begging for a long time, but she wouldn't before the Bell breakup because you had to RENT the phones and touch tone was twice the price of a dial phone, plus touch tone service was more expensive than pulse dialing. Can be 20 to 25 minutes when it's lunch time. So having an electric car would make absolutely no difference. Once I have seen a guy with a ferrari filling up. He was filling up when I arrived. I filled up my honda, I paid, I did go do the tires pressure thing... He was still filling up !!! The guy was cooking in the sun, what a pity !! Finding free charging points is getting to be difficult in some areas, especially where Tesla charging stations are part of shared car parks for hotels or other businesses. I have seen a number of Tesla owners on youtube showing how they can't access the chargers because of other non-electric cars parked (Often legally, sometimes illegally) in the way. In a gas station at least people don't tend to abandon their cars at the pumps for hours/over night. Self driving cars that queue for a charger and park elsewhere once charged will sort this though. Sadly there's not a single affordable EV on the market I'm aware of with a load bed that can take a bike with the wheels still on like my current car does. Or that has any range while towing, so nothing that qualifies as an upgrade from what I have is on the market yet...
      If kits where you ditch your engine, gear box and fuel tank and drop in batteries and a motor instead become available, that could deal with the poor selection of electric vehicle body types on the market at the moment.

    • @AlexandreLollini

      Yes, there are still problems, in France most gas stations have just ONE charging spot/plug. Most of the time it is already occupied. French people are still buying fossil vehicle even if they don't want to because of those problems, or living in rented apartments with underground parking with no outlet or if outlet it is outlet reserved for common usage, so you can't charge an EV on those. If then you don't have a plug at work, this is inconvenient.

    The other paradigm shift is covered by the channel Technology Connections pretty well and its that people think that gas stations need to be changed to EV charging stations. But in reality the normal neighborhood gas station will just - go away - (Turn into convenience stores only) because if you have EV car, you have your EV charging station/gas station AT HOME. "Oh, I need to get gas" phrase becomes completely irrelevant. The "gas station" of the EV world will be more akin to the truck stops on the interstate servicing EVs on long haul or vacations.

    • @UKScenery

      Very true, why stop at a gas station charger and wait around. You can charge at home, work or shopping mail. I live in the UK and have 2 EVs, I find BPs and Shells purchase of charging networks and plans to add chargers to all gas station as a sign of desperation. They are trying to convert a gas station into a EV charging point as well. It will not work. If you need a public charger then the best locations are at your destination, mall, cinema, supermarket ect, almost anywhere else is better than sitting at a gas station breathing in ICE fumes. Only the large highway service stations are needed, not the smaller stations.
      The only way old gas stations will survive is to add restaurants and shops, so the EV driver can take a proper 15-30 minute break.

    @8:44 No reason why you couldn't charge at every light pole...
    Yeah there is, main one being simply not enough power being able to be supplied.
    Todays tesla charging (not the 400V one mentioned)...
    "A Tesla Wall Connector installed on a 60 amp / 240 volt circuit breaker will achieve the maximum charge rate of 11.5 kW for 75 kWh configured vehicles. A Tesla Wall Connector installed on a 90 amp / 240 volt circuit breaker will achieve the maximum charge rate of 17.2 kW for a 100 kWh configured vehicle."
    An old US street lamp used 1KW. Modern ones use 400W or less. Even at todays charging rates using ye-olde sodium lamp infrastructure, you would need between 12 and 18 lamp stands to supply one charging station.
    Correct me if i'm wrong, coz i could be :)

    Hope you get your model 3 soon. For us the earliest will be mid to end of next year. Have to wait for Right Hand Drive to be done first. So in the mean time - A 2011 Leaf bought 1 year ago, and already done 16,000km in even with a range of about 80km max. Cost of $12,500NZD. And a 2016 Hyundai Ioniq bought about 6 months ago for $51,000NZD and have done about 12,000km already. Here the cost of EV's is quite high, and we have no government help on the purchase price. So a new base Ioniq is 60K, and the new Kona, 74K. And for comparison a Mazda 3 starts at about $31k.
    Even so - I'm really happy with both EVs we have, and the amount we save each month in petrol, covers the cost of the money we borrowed to buy the EVs with still some left over. So it still works for us at least.
    Keep up the great videos, Joe.

    Soooo...... I don't mean to be...mean, but... Excitement about material things kinda fails to grab me, completely fails..... I mean are these the things to get excited about, really?!? Changing one car to another car... A car is just a car, man...Chill. In the world where humans are barely conscious, barely aware of their own actions...I'd imagine we'd be more interested in that. But yeah, material grabs people's attention because then you kinda don't have to look inside and see your madness.
    Just saying. I'm excited about different things. Like love, instead of relationships. Pure creativity, instead of business (busy-ness - so f***ing on the nose BTW). And BEING alive, FEELING alive, instead of thinking ABOUT life.

    I don't want a car, which constanstantly spys on me and can be shut off by big brother. EVs are not cars with electric engine, they are smartphones on wheels, where transport is not their main purpose, but collecting data for big brother. Therefore i keep my petrol car.

    Hey Joe, give me a yell if you need a charger circuit set up in your garage. I am one of the DFW Electrical Contractors that does that. Make sure you get things ready BEFORE you bring the car home. :) Some folks wait until the day they get it and then everything is a panic.
    Have played with a LOT of S(s) and X(s) and they are great. You know what the next thing upper end folks get after they get their FIRST Tesla? ANOTHER Tesla. :) True Story.
    I am more of a poor boy, myself. I got a used Volt for about $11.5K used, here in Dallas. Great car, too. Chevy gives them Great Support. I bought it off a private lot, but the Chevy House went through the whole thing and fixed up three things . . . for . . . FREE.
    So. Welcome to EV Land!
