Ive never been to another concert since. Alan, Joe and myself traveled from helensburugh to glasgow and got on the coach at george square, i was 15 and it was my first gig, we didnt find out about Alan until the police got on our coach and pulled Joe and Myself off, we were taken to the local hospital where Joe identified Alans body. we were then taken back to the coach and went home, Rip mate, you are never far from my thoughts.

I was in this crush although not quite at the front. My friends and I linked elbows and kept each other up as we surged forward and back. The flow back and forth was irresistible we held on for dear life. Really scary, you felt if you went down you were gonna be trampled but we were young and strong and kept each other upright. I never felt any guilt like the narrator, I just felt lucky not to go down and that my mates were looking after me.

I was there, and as people rushed forward the corrigated steel walls of a speaker stack started to fall with me next to it. So i managed to move back and to the side. Not even near the front... really scary. Our friend Miles came and found us sometime later crying saying 'I've just seen a dead guy being hauled over the rails.."

Was there myself, aged 17. It was so packed and I recall Axl saying move back. Our group got pushed forward and a large male friend pulled me out of a surge. It was frightening .
I’ve just been to Download 2023, and it was over sold, with record numbers of 130,000 attendance. It’s scary given this in 1988, then Hillsborough in 1989.

Exactly the same here my friend. You've described that moment and my own experience to the point, although i was in there alone. It's was a little scary as an 18 year old, to have your feet off the floor, yet still be carried back and forth, in such big waves, suspended, by nothing more than the force of other human bodies. Like you, I knew, if i went down.... big problems.

I was on the same bus as Landon Siggers out from St. George's Square in Glasgow. I was in the same crush in the front of the stage. The police questioned everyone as we arrived back at the bus to go home. The bus driver announced before we left that Landon had died in the crush during GnR. Such a devastating ride back to Glasgow. We were all heart broken. I think of Landon, his family and friends to this day. Donnington has been with me my whole life since.

The Late Mick Upton (Founder of ShowSec) wrote an in depth article about his experiences on the day (which is available online and in his book “from Ancient Rome to Rock and Roll”), from that he was spurred to introduce better measures and prevent anything like it happening again, which developed into modern crowd management tactics, showstopper procedures, better training and front of stage mojo barriers.
The investigation brought a young Environmental Health Officer from Derbyshire by the name of Richard Limb to the incident. The following findings lead to the recommendations by Richard and others of a formal guide to event safety in the UK which has become the Purple Guide as we know it today.
Sadly Mick passed away in 2016, Richard is still teaching Event Safety Management at the University of Derby. Their legacy will leave on.
RIP to those lost on the day and at other crowd disasters.

      Junkies shooting up
Camp site was like mad Max thunderdome
Our tent got run over luckily we weren't inside at time .
Two boys ABT 14 yrs old slept under our car we only noticed them when came back from drinking with a Swedish group
Who setup a bar made out of beer cases
And a fire the size of Blackpool tower .
It was wild to be sure and yet I saw no fighting not one punch or arguement everyone was just partying .
Oh the doors got ripped off the women's portaloos which were up on a flatbed lorry friends and boyfriends were holding the doors on and a cheer went up when one fell off

As I remember it , GnR and Maiden had the worst time of it regarding crushes . The sound was shit until David lee Roths set. As night fell the cartons of piss began to be thrown up in the air and landed on peoples heads . So many were stranded after the festival due to a laughably disorganised coach car park. I had to walk to Derby to get a ride home . No idea what the festival experience is like now but that was a ridiculous day.

When KISS came on i was right down the front of the barrier.
I jumped up once and one lad pushed to my right, Another had pushed to my left and i was stuck up in the air to what seemed like for about 30 seconds, They wedged me up and couldn't move.

This guy got on the stage and was gesturing for the fans to get back and he was told to get off by Roth. The guy was probably worried another crush incident was going to happen and Roth was unaware of this.

I was at the front when G n R came on. The bottles of piss were showering down. It was grim. I was 15 and I got split up from all my friends at 10am and didn't see them till about 10pm.
When G n R came on, it was mental. Everybody was pushing. My gut feeling was to get away from the front. It took me about 20 or 30 mins till I got to an area of grass and I slumped on the ground exhausted. Scary as hell. So glad I moved back that day. It was madness. But incredible line up of bands! I never knew about the deaths until after the concert.

I'm 17 years old down the front for GNR my new favourite band their success had really over shot their position on the running order, everyone wanted to "go down the front" however 120000 can't all do that, combined with a muddy wet ground and a slope the ones that made it got crushed!
Now this was my first Donington I thought this was "normal" almost like a rite of passage how did I know what a festival was like, but wow my rib cage went in and out like an accordion with the waves of the crush, I couldn't physically move my arms up to cheer after a song, constantly fighting to stay on my feat, sometimes being lifted off the ground altogether! I managed to dive over the front pulled by guards after the set just to get back to my mates at the back... only heard about the deaths the day after.... so sorry for those guys and only then thinking how close I was, how close so many more could have died.

my friend and I managed to drag a lass out who was in trainers and on the deck being trampled, to the side. Scariest thing ever. Did not realise anyone was dead until I got back to London and woke up next day. Being from Glasgow, my family heard it was an Alan who had died and I had no idea as sound asleep until about 2 next day so panic central....it has always stayed with me.....no one should die at a gig

I was there...16 years old at the time and as the commentator correctly reports, I was covered in piss, flung into the air in plastic bottles.
Despite everything, my opinion of Axl Rose will never change.
    He was amazing!
He did everything he could to get the people to calm down and move back, stopping the show several times.
From my perspective it was an amazing show...only as we exited after Iron Maiden had finished were we notified by the tanoi system that 2 men had died.
What a cloud on an amazing day.
But never should anyone hold Axl Rose responsible. He was a genuine hero that day, doing everything he could.

I also helped other people up who had fallen too whenever I could. R.I.P. Alan & Landon. A great day but also a sad day. I knew nothing of them being crushed until I got home the next day.

My first Monsters of Rock was Maiden in 92, with the barrier down the middle to stop sideways crowd surges. Never stopped the crush from the back. As soon as Maiden came on, the crush was that tight, my feet were lifted off the ground, very similar to '88. With the T barriers it does seem a little better, not so many surges. Look out for each other in the pit. ✌️

I was one of the people who got trampled, the surge came from the right and a group of us went down like dominoes with the crowd surging straight over us. The mud made getting up difficult there was no space to manoeuvre in, after getting back up I was pulled over the barrier by security and led to a makeshift recovery area backstage and after 10 minutes was allowed back into the event after St John's ambulance had looked me over.
The ground in front of the stage was fine however to the right of the stage was a slope and at the top had been erected a drinking station as it was a hot day.
It was a wooden frame with multiple press water fountain taps fed by a large blue plastic pipe. Within an hour it had been smashed up and the large pipe feeding it was left to discharge water all day. The water ran down the slope and collected at the low point in front of the stage and was churned into mud.
The crowd size was much bigger than the estimate as security became overwhelmed a section of fence at the back was removed and fans who had come to listen outside streamed in. I nearly died that day and never went to an outdoor concert again.
The Dave Lee Roth incident was caused by the British security who were positioned at ground level at the front of the stage getting so frustrated by people getting injured that one climbed up the 10ft to the stage to gesture the crowd to move back, Roth unaware of what was happening said "get off my f**king stage man" and then one of his personal security came running out and shoved the guy off into the crowd. The crowd reacted with instant fury and pelted the stage with bottles.
About 20 minutes later Roths security came around to speak to the British security guy about the incident and got battered by the rest of the security guards, you can probably hear the cheer towards the end of the set.

I WAS IN A CROWD AND YOU COULD FEEL THE CRUSH. PEOPLE AR3 SCREAMING AND PANICING…..but as an 18 year old male 6 feet tall, I could get air and I used my elbows to push out as much as possible….still, I could feel my rib cage compacting and it was difficult next to me. A girl…about 5’ 2” next to me….a stranger…..I could feel her becoming more and more desperate. At one point she grabbed my arm….a pure stranger….as she was going lower and lower….I yanked her back to her feet and told her to hold on to my arm. Whenever we had a chance….we moved backwards…fans behind us happy to move forward and we traded spots…..eventually we were able to,get out and she hugged me like I had saved her life. I had not. I did what any normal decent person would do….I told her to have a happy life and we parted. I never went back in one of those crowds…..once it starts…there is no way to stop it.

Piss and vomit was flying everywhere but it was self preservation for me and others !!!! didn’t even know anyone had been killed until the following day, my parents had been frantic because they had no way of contacting me, no mobiles!!! 1988 had the strongest line up for its time from when the monsters of rock first started in 1980 hence why it had the record breaking crowd.
I went to every one prior to 88 and that year the line up was phenomenal until that tragedy during guns n roses set .
We were stood right next to the mixing lighting tower to the left of the stage where we always stood every year and intended to stay there things weren't too bad during helloween but as they were ending their set that's when it got scary never in all the years I'd been going I've never seen so many people trying to get to the front the surge was starting before guns n roses hit the stage where we were stood people around us were starting to get pissed off with the pushing and shoving and the tempers were starting to flare up . I thought this ain't good at all as we were getting so tightly packed you could lift your feet up off the ground and just stay there . Anyway by the time guns n roses hit the stage it got worse and we weren't no where near the front you were fighting to keep upright surging in all directions that's when we knew it was time to get out the four of us agreed if we got split up we'd meet under the Dunlop bridge which thankfully we did and were safe but it was bloody hard work getting out I finally got to the Dunlop bridge halfway through kiss and waited for the others who weren't long after . I can't bare to imagine what it was like down at the front it must have been hell .
It wasn't until we got home the next day that we got the news that two young lads died as a result of that surge Alan dick and Landon siggers although I never knew them personally their names and that fateful day will always remain etched in my mind R.I.P lads you'll never be forgotten 🤘.

A similar incident when they let too many fans in and everybody ended up getting squashed to death.

This was my 9th Donington weekend, I was 28 years old at this point, I always stayed near the middle to rear, bottles of urine were the usual. You had to know what to expect at these events, as tragic as it was, it was no surprise to the usual event goers.

I was there with my bro and his work mates. Got to the concert towards the end of Helloween gig and got within maybe 200yds from the main stage, it was crazy, simply getting lifted from your feet if you got any closer . Bottles were flying everywhere (full of piss), My pal caught one clean in the mush :). Later on that night i seen a guy get covered in piss and then set onfire! The thing is, everybody new about the 2 deaths at the time, it was annouced, Scaffolding callapsing or something? But the concert went ahead...... just seemed normal at the time.

I was at Castle Donnington in 1984 and have pictures of 2 liter bottles full of piss flying around (and I’m talking about hundreds at a time ) and it never stoped until the in of the concert after the great AC/DC were done.

That's as scary as Mississippi currents and undertow. I remember using my arms bent birdlike to lift myself up on bigger guys shoulders to keep from getting smashed ground crushed or walked on. If you fell you knew you were a goner. I probably weighed 80#. Sorry you lost friends. I will never forget the experience. The pressure rocks and you have to brace and hold breath to and fro. Then the panic of the herd is at it's most dangerous. ENCOURAGE IMMEDIATELY KEEPING ALL UPRIGHT LIFTING WOMEN OVER GATES.
