Once again really nice video Howard. I did my PPL at Elstree 4 years ago. The radio traffic was sometimes intense, but a great training for bigger airports. Also the runway is a bit uneven and bumpy. Apart from that it's a great little aerodrome. In good visibility while practicing circuits you could see the London Eye, Gherkin, and some other tall buildings all the way in Central London by the Thames.
The fact that Echo Bravo asked to book out on the radio, was denied, then continued to start up their plane anyway and would've heard how congested the radio was, and decided again to ask to book out over the radio... if I were in the tower I would've responded a bit more harshly I reckon.
Thank you very much. I will get one I hope it'll work with my gopro's. I hope you have a great festive season and a happy New Year. If I bump into you at Elstree I will say Hi
Love watching these vids, very nice & also very useful to learn from. I'm thinking of commiting to becoming a pivate pilot so i'm watching almost all youtube vids on getting a PPL. I'm curious though, @4:03 That Echo Bravo pilot seemed to agitate the controller when he asked for a "Book Out". Can anyone tell me what a book out is referring to?
@sabermaster80 If you wish to fly your plane, you have to book out beforehand. It means telling the controller the callsign of the plane you are using, how many people are on board, name of the captain and whether you are doing circuits or going off into the local area so they can give you the qnh/qfe as required. Normally this is done by phoning up the tower before even getting in the aircraft, or physically going into the tower speaking to the controller directly. The reason the controller was agitated is because Echo Bravo asked if he could book out over the radio beforehand and the controller declined because booking out takes time and the airspace was busy. Then Echo Bravo chose request the taxi and booking out despite already being told no. I hope that answers your question.
@@rainbowdash7194 Right ok i understand. Yeah so booking out is definitely something i would want getting out of the way before getting into the aircraft. It's something that will clearly save time later on down the line. Now i really understand the controllers frustration. But i wonder if echo bravo actually did phone or go into the tower like he was suppose to but even then they were busy? So he thought "I'll head to the plane, do my checks & so on, then i'll try again on the radio?" Hmm well who knows. What i do know though is that you taught me alot Rainbow & i really appreciate you taking the time to explain. Thank you so much 😊👍🏿
Very nice video, I learned to fly in Elstree. So i know it feels like Heathrow compared to most other places I have been. Can I ask, what program do you use to get the airspeed, and direction compass?
There is a problem with nose landing light indicator, turn off and turn on at 2min30 and 3min37 of the video... maybe the proximity/microswitch switch.
Many thanks Gerald....it's a problem with a loose connection. It has happened occasionally on the ground too. Some fiddling with the light's casing makes the problem go away, at least a for a while.
great video....yes Elstree can get very busy.....if ever you need a "fuel contribution buddy" I'd be happy to accompany you just let me know......Richard.
Had several lessons in PA38 but unable to commit due work/Life balance.....also flown many times in PA28 Turbo Arrow Retractable Gear as Navigator/Comms operator.....flights to France, N Wales, West Country, South Wales, Isle o W, South East.....all land aways. Flown VFR, SVFR thru Heathrow zone several times (to cut the corner), IFR....and experienced Moderate to Severe Turb from FL50 to landing at EGTR.......worked hard that day!!!Majority of flights (when I'm able) at weekends. Own headset!!! And sense of Humour!!!
Hi Richard. I haven't yet flown with someone I don't know and even less inclined to do so with someone from an internet site. Sorry. If you get to know me in person we could fly together possibly.
There is no restriction in the UK as to who can fly a plane, so long as they are properly qualified. Anyone can learn so long as they pass the medical requirements for the licence that they want to obtain.

Some say Echo Bravo is still waiting to book out....
Hahaha ...... and probably still waiting lol

I used to live next door to aerodrome in dagger lane .😁
Thank you very much. I will get one I hope it'll work with my gopro's. I hope you have a great festive season and a happy New Year.

Simon, I use Garmin's Virb Edit software. It does this out of the tin.
Marvellous :)
Excellent video
Thanks Jack

I enjoyed your video. May i ask where did you buy that camera
Thanks Anthony. The camera is an old Garmin Virb Elite....no longer sold. Newer better Garmin Virbs have replaced it. Try Amazon.
Can I ask what camera were you using?
It's a Garmin Virb Elite - a camera since surpassed by later models from Garmin.
My flying school is there
If you learn to fly at Elstree, you land anywhere, with less stress :D !
