During the face off between Jon and Ramsay, notice that it was a Mormont shield that Jon used to protect himself from Ramsay's arrows. There were only 62 Mormont men in Jon's army, but at least one of them made it inside Winterfell so that Jon could use his shield. The small contingent from Bear Island were a key part of the victory. And Sansa's little "Mona Lisa" smile at the end was pure gold.

@@el-carry4624 Perhaps "key" was a bit of an overstatement, but the point I was trying to make was that of the 2000-odd fighters, there was a low probability that a Bear islander would have been one of the 20 or so men entering Winterfell after Wun Wun breached the gate. When Davos picks up the toy and the crimson sky behind him looks like Shireen's funeral pyre...that's a beautiful shot! The shot of the white horse emerging out of the middle as all the horses charge...beautiful! That whole 30 sec clip of Jon rearranging Ramsay's face and that "Your name will disappear. All memory of you will disappear" ending...I can rewind those a million times lol! The VFX Artists React channel did a frame by frame analysis of Battle of the Bastards a little while back that has a ton of views. They called it some of the most meticulous examples of blending CGI and various other aspects of cinematography for a battle that they've ever seen! All these years later it's still impeccable.

Ramsay does exactly what William the Conqueror did in Battle of Hastings. That should answer any debate about the plausibility of the strategies applied. The heaps of bodies is what Bosworth Field, Tewkesbury, St Albans, and other War of the Roses battlefields looked like. The close range combat, the human pile, the stomping, even the horse charge was done irl. The horses charged full speed and stopped about five feet from him. No room for error. The filming location was a field in Belfast, in mud, slush and rain over weeks with an unprecedented number of extras. The CGI is flawless. Deep diving into the three main questions raised about the battle. First is Jon being too lucky. If that one-take makes him look too "lucky", that's deliberately done to show no amount of skill would save you in a battle without luck. The camera follows him, but he's not the only one going through the same hell. All hundreds or thousands of survivors in every medieval battle had the same "luck".Second is Jon's thought process. Jon didn't chase Ramsay cause he was fooled and lured out, he chased Ramsay cause he was mentally ready for and almost yearned a respectable death in the battlefield over the deceit and treachery that lead to his death the last time around. He was looking for an easy out. Rickon running in a serpentine pattern wouldn't have mattered either as Ramsay had hundreds of archers pointing at him. He was simply toying with his food. Third is the Vale being ex machina. Well sometimes predictability is good. The long list of subversions it took to get here warrants a rare ex machina imo. The logistics is the same as Stannis arriving at the Wall or Tywin's assault on King's Landing. Tywin didn't tell anyone either. Sansa's only option was to hide it from Jon as righteous Jon "Stark" would've outright rejected Petyr's offer. No wonder the episode was as enormously popular as it was, they aimed to please the vast majority and not the insignificant minority of terminally unhappy people in the forums. The finale has a lifetime worth of shockers, so this was the golden opportunity to give us that rare happy ending. If they did something subversive, the ultraintellectuals would've cried about it like they did in Mother's Mercy, which was subversively excellent.

For me it was so sad to see Rickon run towards his half brother, one who they knew wasn’t a full brother but a bastard- but in the end that is the only person he has to run to. Not Robb or his father or mother. His half brother is his one and only person who he has, who’s willing to fight and die for him. And it is so bittersweet the love rickon probably had in that moment as he ran towards Jon Snow. Finally towards a family member who can protect him. We often don’t think about the fact that rickon was a little baby and he basically never had his family around , with his life being entirely on the run 😞

"It was a fitting ending for the character whom The Atlantic’s readers determined to be the actual worst on television, across shows and genres, and whom The New York Times also dubbed, without irony, the “Most Hated Man on TV.” As my colleague Lenika Cruz has noted, one of the challenges Game of Thrones’s creators have faced as they have attempted to create plot lines that marry literary merit and fan service was to kill Ramsay off-his death was almost inevitable-in a way that would offer a satisfying mix of karmic justice and audience catharsis. Ramsay has inflicted so much pain, on his victims and by extension on his TV viewers, that few things would seem quite appropriate to that task. “He confounds many of the rules that would usually apply to small-screen villains,” Cruz wrote, “so it’s unusually difficult to imagine a departure that would hit all the right storytelling notes.” And yet: With the death Ramsay was ultimately given-particularly bloody, particularly painful, particularly degrading-Game of Thrones managed to give its worst character an ending that was, to the extent such things can be, fitting. This was not only because of the what-goes-around-comes-around mauling Ramsay endured at the hands (or, more precisely, the jaws) of his own weaponized beasts. It was also-and more so-because of the words Sansa sent him away with. Ramsay’s death was, in the end, not about Ramsay so much as it was about Sansa. A show that is deeply interested in its own portrayals of justice gave its audience an execution that was bloody and sticky and screaming and salivating; the scene got its gravitas, though, from the death warrant Sansa, Ramsay’s victim, read at its start. It was the scene’s words that gave it its moral heft." - *The Atlantic*

The battle of encirclement is based upon Hannibal’s great victory at Cannae. Approximately 40 thousand Carthaginians drew 80,000 Romans into a great circle. Almost all 80,000 died, with half reported to have died by crushing suffocation as the outer rings pressed inward. This battle is still taught in war college. In fact, it’s precepts we’re used in the first Gulf War.

I said at the last finale that a constant theme of GoT is that every season people crave for a comeuppance, every season the carrot gets dangled and at the last moment it gets snatched away brutally. A running gag of the show was people saying "if so and so dies/lives I'm done!" But there's a strange attraction to getting hit over the head with morbidity over and over again that made us keep coming back for more. Probably as you start sensing from the build time alone that when you do get that elusive comeuppance, it'll be glorious. Well there it is at last. Imo it's every bit as cathartic as it would be at the end of a long road full of heartbreaks. The lack of instant fanservice makes it easy to lose sight of the fact that the show became a phenomenon for the very reason that it didn't give you an inch, it made you go through the grinder first. So little surprise that Bastards used to be one of the most 'reacted to' tv episodes as you can see the gamot of emotions it brought out from those fans who'd hopelessly waited years for the Stark wolf to fly over Winterfell once again. The Roman encirclement captures the random cruel chaoticness of war well. This was one for the ages I like the finale more!

When Jon faced the oncoming enemy cavalry alone, he was certain his death was imminent, and he accepted that, as he took off his sword belt (as did Stannis at Winterfell). It was just a slight weight and movement constraint, and he no longer had use for it; he wouldn't sheathe his sword again. Jon was soul-weary, as in when he initially protested against any more fighting when he was talking to Sansa at Castle Black, and when he told Melisandre not to bring him back if he fell.

It makes way more sense that the Boltons fall at the hands of the family they betrayed than a rando like Stannis. If the Boltons lost a season or two ago, it would've been any. other. show. It was special to the masses because the river of shit they had to wade to get there. Think back how long it's been, where these characters were when we started! What other show would have the balls? Mellisandre saying "don't you wanna chase the rats out of Winterfell" or "welcome home Lady Stark, the North remembers". So many teases. Nothing was given they made you earn it. The pleasure of dogfood Ramsay doesn't exist without the winter wedding. The last two episodes didn't exist in a random vacuum. All the prior season bleakness goes into creating the mood for the eventual turnover. The longer the slowburn was the more memorable these moments became. One can disagree, it's all subjective. What is not subjective is this being in the IMDB Top 10 Episodes List, or the viewership numbers of these two seasons or the 24 Emmys the two seasons won in total.

Director Miguel Sapochnik (bummed he's leaving HOTD) did a deep dive on the trampling scene being a metaphorical reincarnation of Jon. Jon by the time of the battle is a man beaten down by circumstance. His increasingly agitated interactions with the people closest to him is reflective of his inner despondence and self-doubt. This is a man betrayed by his own Brothers. A man who's lost faith. That famous one take of Jon in the field dodging arrows and horses is the height of his resignation to fate. That's the point where he's on auto pilot with a singular purpose to kill or die. Probably best way to remain alive in a pitched battle, when you've already accepted you're as good as dead. As the crush starts and he gets buried under a mass of humanity, he's finally forced to slow down. There's a close up of his face looking almost serene, like he's finally at peace with the end. But in this process of letting go he also starts to regain the humanity he had lost after being betrayed. From under the stampede he finds a new desire to live stronger than before, and as he comes up gasping for air, he emerges a man reborn. THIS, is the real Resurrection of Jon Snow. Or as Sapochnik calls it, 'the vaginal birthing shot' lol. It's a parable for the reawakening of The North. The turning point. Jon being raised above the stampede mirrors another similar turning point moment. To S3 finale "Mhysa" where Dany is held aloft the human tide, except the circumstance is turned over its head figuratively and literally. Btw after hearing the slow sad version for so long, the "triumphant reprise" of the Stark theme as they break through the Bolton lines is perfect use of emotive BGM.

The arrival of the vale with the Stark theme playing and the cut scene to Sansa and LF is one of my favorite moments of the show. Idc how obvious it was it still felt gotdamn great and going by all the reactions most felt the same way. The northern arc took me on seasons worth of emotional rollercoster and payed it off in the end, that wins out anyday over everything else plus I don't see it as much different from a similar climax we had to a previous battle. From Jon refusing the Stark name to the Bear Island scroll, it has been the most harrowing of slowburns. It was absolutely time for a pay off and I'm glad they didn't blue ball it. This was universally regarded as a classic not just because of the battle but due to the closure it provides to a very long torment. There couldn't have been a more satisfying end to a character that was once dubbed the most hated villain on TV.

When I think of what it set out to achieve, purifying vengeance for the Starks, bastard bowl lives up to its reputation. It still gets me hype just like it did when I first saw it. After holding off for so long it's that full pitch battle that we came close to many times in the past but always got denied. This time they drop the motherload to put a bow on the story spanning these two seasons of the slow death of Jon's spirit ever since Ygritte, a death more meaningful than the death of his flesh at the wall. A death that parallels the Northern death under Bolton yoke, with the Batttle for Winterfell being both their emblematic revival and restoration. And the revival of a lineage since you've seen the finale. A restoration driven home as Ned sees the birth of Rhaegar's heir and Jon is crowned King in the North simultaneously. This is a goated GoT episode! It can't be said enough that vengeance would not be as sweet as it was without the grueling and protracted buildup. It's the virtues of patience, good things come to those who wait.

Today's warfare is much more impersonal, if we were to return to this type of fighting, war would cease as we have known it for the last 100 years. Return to the sword and no one wants to be in that fight. MMA is about as close as one comes to no rules fighting. Who knows where that will lead. How did Sam find the white walker horn in S2 buried under random snow from those flimsy markers left years ago that somehow survived all the extreme climate? That’s actually way less probable than Davos finding the toy by rummaging through an obvious abandoned funeral pyre, since they are in the same place Stannis set up camp. I only wish this degree of scepticism was consistent and didn’t curiously develop in S6. Btw running in zig zag would not have saved Rickon. Over the years I’ve changed my opinion about Sansi not not telling Jon about Littlefinger and the Vale Calvary. She said you have to do something unorthodox to trick Ramsey and so I give her unwillingness to tell Jon as a battle tactic to get Ramsey to totally commit his army to the battlefield.
But I am a still irritated that when they were going to all the Houses looking for allies and troops, Jon never brought up the fact about why don’t we write Littlefinger and Robin in the Vale. Robin Aryn is a blood relative to Sansi and the Aryn’s are long time allies of the Starks. You would think he would have thought of them as he is brainstorming what remaining troops were left. Now he might have been told the Vale will never commit, but you would have thought Jon would have brought it up.

18:51 Because the showrunners couldn’t think of any other way to have a big suspenseful battle where the audience believes the good guys are gonna lose only to be saved in the eleventh hour by surprise help. It’s what makes 2x09 the superior battle episode. The side of our main perspective for the battle looks like they’re going to lose, only to be saved by Tywin bringing in the Tyrell forces in the eleventh hour. That season was still drawing from book material, and GRRM wrote that episode himself. The showrunners wrote this one.
Instead of writing a letter they should have had Sansa leave in episode 7 after she and Jon argue about not having enough men. Then in the parlay with Ramsay this episode (which Sansa isn’t there for) Ramsay says if Jon wants to save Rickon he better bring his army to fight tomorrow. Ramsay doesn’t want to give the Starks more time because he knows the number he has now can defeat the number they currently have. So Jon doesn’t have time to wait and see if Sansa was able to recruit more forces. Then she arrives with the Vale army the same way it played out this episode.
