      We should really try to advertise this channel everywhere on miniature forums/channels. Maybe that'd make Wizkids/WotC aware and they would send the previews for their next sets to GallantGoblin instead of random reviewers with shakey webcams and not much understanding of the RPG.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  5 років тому

      That would certainly help us a lot. We're just not super aware of all various places we should be advertising the channel honestly. Between our day jobs and making videos (and moving to CA and me finding a new job out there), it's hard to have time to spread the word effectively. If you have suggestions for us on methods or locations to plug our videos, we'd be all ears and very appreciative. At this point we're pretty much dependent on word of mouth and search algorithms. -Theo

    Great advise on the Gelatinous Cube! that's +1 in wisdom for me. The design of the merfolk doesn't apeal to me, I prefer the classic one, but that mini could be a Shalarin, but shalarins are bipedal, but still. One thing I would like is that the flying minis had land based versions, like the Erineyes and the faerie dragon. There's one famous faerie dragon called Newt (in the "Moonshae trilogy") but I need the same mini on land and flying to play. Also, it would be a good idea that small creatures were with unique medium or larger minis in the same base, like the "Sonlen" mini in Heroscape, he had his pseudo dragon on the shoulder and he looks fantastic! That would mean some minis that can be together in the game, but it is worth it! I have some of the set, but haven't seen the mimic, now I need it! Great video.

    Wow that stack of boxes behind you! THat's a LOT of minis. :) And yeah this was the turning point for me where I was fully convinced to collect this line for good. It had a great selection of monsters and even the NPCs from that rather forgettable CRPG were useful minis. The selection of Rares was odd (why make the Minotaur a Rare) but the uncommons more than made up for it with the Gelatinous Cube and Bat Swarm. And so many undead - useful for a Ravenloft adventure.

    • @TheGallantGoblin

      Ha, yes... we have our work cut out for us with that stack of boxes and more incoming. Definitely a good set, and finally a place to send people when they ask where to start. It really is a Monster Menagerie / Curse of Strahd set.

    Btw, it is a nice touch that they made this Lich minis so that he looks like a Thayan mage - he has the robes of a Red Wizard and the omega-like symbol on his head!
    Also, the Death Knight might have once been a paladin of Torm, given the gauntlet symbol on his shield! That matches nicely with what they say about their origins as fallen heroes.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  5 років тому +1

      Great attention to detail there. Thanks for adding those insights. That somehow makes me think we should do a video of the top 10 art pieces from 5e books that deserve to have minis made from them.

      That's awesome! They totally need to do little sets of kobolds, goblins, gnolls etc, all with different poses, since your rarely encounter them alone anyway. Pathfinder even has a goblin village set coming out later this year. We need a cute set of goblins to populate it.

    • @commanderbbshockwave8698
      @commanderbbshockwave8698 5 років тому +1

      @@TheGallantGoblin Yes, on MinisGallery a lot of people voiced how they want themed sets of one type of creatures. Like Pathfinder Battle's Goblin and Undead sets. Though apparently those did not sold well, I gotta wonder if it was due to the blind bag format. At any rate, I hope Icons gives us more Kobolds. I love the 5E design with their little dragon look and cute black button noses, it mixes the 2E "yipping little dog people" and the 3E "tiny dragons" designs. Funny how much Kobolds changed over editions. In 1E they looked like Goblin variants!

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  5 років тому +1

      Indeed. That Classic Creatures set that was release a year or two ago was a bit jarring in how different some of the designs were to what I was used to. We're going to be reviewing that set at some point too. Spoiler alert - I wasn't too fond of it. I do have to admit to liking the cuter Pathfinder designs to most of the more "realistic" D&D designs. I definitely need to get myself some more Pathfinder kobolds. You'll be seeing more showcases of Pathfinder sets on our channel soon. Those videos take a bit longer since we're not super familiar with Pathfinder and don't have the research resources as readily available, but we're doing our best. We're going to stay a more D&D focused channel, so we'll likely be talking about how to incorporate the Pathfinder minis into a D&D campaign. - Theo

      As a note on the paint jobs, I didn't notice any bad coverage of the paint itself or egregious missing features beyond a few mouths not being painted on, but what threw me off was the broad use of a single, vibrant color like on the merfolk or the clothing of the rakshasa and vampire, among many other cases. The lack of texturing or shading details plus the vivid colors makes the paint job look less realistic or less detailed, even though technically speaking there's nothing *wrong* with it. -Grady

    LOL I just got to the Gelatinous Cube. :) I gotta try fitting as many minis inside them as I can, like you did! That was a nice joke.
    Btw, I always wondered why Displacer Beast only has 2 attacks, when they have 6 legs, and large cats of their size usually have claw/claw/bite attacks plus can jump and rake... I imagine a Displacer Beast could rake like, 4 times! :D Guess they would have been too powerful with that many attacks and being hard to hit.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  5 років тому

      Haha, the gelatinous cube actually looked like it could fit more than 4 if you try (I'll be curious to hear your results)! I only went up to 4 because that's mechanically the limit according to the stat block.
      It looks like the displacer beast's tentacle attack has a reach of 10ft, so lorewise the beast is attacking out of melee range which would preclude it from clawing or pouncing. I agree it's odd there's no claw attack for if someone does get up in the beast's face though. Maybe that's how the blink dogs beat them!
      -Grady

    • @commanderbbshockwave8698
      @commanderbbshockwave8698 5 років тому +1

      @@TheGallantGoblin Yeah that explains it, their tentacles are reach weapons. Guess they did not want to complicate things by adding different attack types for close range.

    Sorry, a little correction - back then this set had a very different distribution of invisibles than there are today when you are only likely to get 2, maybe 3 of them per Case. I got five invisibles in my case - Fairy Dragon, Jarhild Stoneforge, Bryn Lightfingers, Phase Spider amd Strahd himself! I have to say this set has maybe the best selection of invisibles as they actually make sense for once - Fairy Dragons can turn invisible, Phase Spiders can shift to the Ethereal Plane, and Displacer Beasts are basically not where they seem to be. All of these can be represented well with these minis. Which makes me a bit sad that Otto in WDH did not get an Invisible variant.

    • @TheGallantGoblin

      We’d certainly like to expand coverage and if you have suggestions for anything you’d like to see, we’re happy to hear them! I’m not sure we have anything that fits that category right now. We actually started the channel precisely because it was hard to get a good look at the more expensive minis and given their price, we thought it would be helpful for people to really see what they’d be getting before committing to any purchases, which is why our videos are skewed the way they are. But again we’d love to provide more comprehensive coverage if possible! -Grady

    This is why I am divesting from D&D. This is $170 a brick on miniature market, when new ones go for $95. I just wanted miniatures to play a game called D&D. I did not want to get into another game called "collecting" where I can't have everything or have to spend stupid amounts of money to get it. This set has important useful monsters like umber hulks and raksashas, but even then only as "rares". I think my next investment will be in a 3D printer and a hex from a witch to put on WizKids. I bought a second brick for Water Deep Dragon Heist and got exactly the same mini's as on the first. Not one single new one. I wanted this set because I have Curse of Strahd, but not paying double to get it. I think I'm going to sell all my D&D stuff except the core rule books and just make my own adventures and play using only theater of the mind with dice, pencils, and paper and everyone who tried to rip me off can go out of business. I get it now. It's a hobby. It's an investment. I wanted minis to play with in my game but wanted to avoid painting. I need to go through the adventure I'm going to run and look at all the encounters and possible random encounters and create a checklist of creatures I need to see what I have, don't have, and need to print and paint. Methodically, systematically. No more chance. No more randomness. Everything will be done to insure certainty of maximum preparedness. You can all have fun playing your collecting game. I don't feel ripped off or anything, I realize I could sell these as singles and probably make all my money back. It's just a hassle for me and after getting 32 duplicates I'm done. Just done. Even the three rares were the exact same rares. Maybe the thing to do if you really like these WizKids minis is to get one brick and fill out the rest buying singles, but be prepared to spend as much as you would have on getting a case. All that being said, your channel and your videos are all fantastic. You do great work. You get a big thumbs up for that. Just didn't realize what I was getting into when I bought all these, that it would be a "hobby" where there would be "collecting" and the things I wanted would be "rare" and require feeling exploited, making me wonder if I can trust even Miniature Market not to use X-ray machines to scan for all the Xanathar's and extract them and replace them with crocodiles and lions so they call sell the Xanathars for $60 a piece. I don't like the place it has taken my mind to, so I'm out. BUT I WILL STILL KEEP WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS!!!

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 роки тому

      That’s all completely understandable. We’re going to do our best to showcase different options for getting minis, standees, and tokens for D&D and other TTRPGs, because blind boxes are certainly not for for everyone. Luckily there are a lot of options out there as you mentioned. Not just for minis but for terrain. I’m going to try to get more 3D Printing content on the channel as well; those videos just take more time obviously. If you find something you really like that you think we should share with everyone, please let me know! And I really appreciate your feedback! -Theo

    Really wish the cases for these weren't jacked up so high, otherwise this would be one of the more worthwhile sets to buy in bulk. It's actually cheaper to just get 4 bricks rather than try to buy a full case. With the case incentive bought separately, you'd still be saving money over the full case somehow.

    • @TheGallantGoblin
      @TheGallantGoblin  4 роки тому +1

      Ooof prices are indeed high on these right now. The problem with buying 4 bricks instead of a case is you have no guarantee there won't be duplication between random bricks. As the rares are usually the most expensive singles in the set, the premium on the case may or may not be worth it. That said, cases usually retail for similar or less than the price of 4 bricks. When they're jacked up like this, it's because they're running low on stock, but you can expect WizKids to reprint the common sets like the Monster Menageries, so if you wait a bit their price should settle back down to normal. -Grady

    I really wish they had stuck with the unhallowed sculpt for Lord Strahd, this one is ok and all but his skin tone is pretty trashcan. My favorite sculpt for Strahd will always be the amazing one done by Ral Partha in the early 90's for their denizens of Ravenloft box set .
    I'm one of the biggest Ravenloft fanboys you'll ever meet so yeah I'll end up buying this second hand ( as of right now it goes for around $30 most places) as well as the unhallowed ( around $40 if you can find it).
    I think it was Theo that replied to one of my posts a while back ago saying he's heard rumors they might be releasing a Ravenloft set, if so I'll buy multiple cases , and hopefully it will be tied into a campaign setting for 5th!
