    What I like about Paradigm is that the new owner/founder doesn’t play games with the hardware. Doesn’t look for ways to cheap out on materials. Paradigm held together pretty good in Scott’s absence, but I expect great things from him and his son moving forward. The Founder series sounds like a higher definition version of studio V2 which I like. I think Scott likes the voicing of that speaker.

    I have two paradigm seismic 110 subs which absolutely rock the house down! They don't get the recognition they deserve I think because they are an odd shape and many people probably don't like the way they look. I didn't until my favorite sales guy made me listen to one. I was blown away!
    I had used paradigm subs since the 90's and tried a couple other brands but always went back to a paradigm, but I had gotten rid of my big tower speakers and dedicated two channel stuff so I wanted a sub that go really deep and really loud for movies but also be incredibly quick and punchy to blend with my old studio 20's for music. These are incredible at both jobs!
    The reason I mention these subs is they were paradigms first attempt at a dual spider design and they are f*****g awesome
    If you Google pictures of the 110 driver and this new one you can see the family resemblance.
    10 years later putting that driver in a more conventional looking box should be a huge win for paradigm!

      I've also had the Seismic 110. For it's size, I have yet to come across another sub that can dig as deep as it. Now I'm rocking a triple sub setup with dual Sub 15s with the 2000sw driver conversion done on them up front and a Servo 15V2 directly behind the couch for some serious tactile feel. I've owned a lot of subs over the years and never have I been this satisfied.

    I had to put svs isolation feet on my paradigm reference sub15. It would shake the stock ones loose and they would rattle. Paradigm higher end subs are fantastic. They were going for 3499 when new and I caught a sale getting it for about 2. Took 2 sb4000 to give similar output and low end but the three together are potent. I still have a pb12/2 that's in 100 percent working order. Svs still had amps for them too when i needed one a few years ago.

  • @markfischer3626
    @markfischer3626 2 роки тому +3

    Not all sealed subwoofers are the same. The acoustic suspension design is unique. The stuffing is critical to its performance. It's not just there for damping cabinet resonances, in fact that's not it purpose. As one engineer to another it was nearly 40 years between the time I had acquired the analytical tools to understand woofer/enclosure performance and the time I applied it to this problem. The two tools are Newton's second law of motion applied to forced oscillation and the ideal gas laws. Newton's law is in every first year college physics course textbook. The law used this way is the famous mass, spring, dashpot model used in many places such as designing the performance of an automobile suspension and how it will respond to a bump. The ideal gas law give you P1*V1=P2*V2 and of course F=P*A. In a sealed box the restoring force can be mostly the difference in the air pressure inside and the air pressure outside applied uniformly on the cone's surface. Only a small amount of mechanical compliance and a tiny hole for air to leak in or out is required to bring the cone back to its neutral zero voltage position and to prevent it from becoming a manometer.
    The trick that even Edgar Villchur who invented this design didn't understand is that by forcing the cone to push and pull air between the fibers creates an aerodynamic frictional drag proportional to the velocity of the air. This is the same reason the space shuttle heat up reentering the earth's atmosphere. By adjusting the moving mass, amount of trapped air, and the nature and amount of stuffing you can adjust the resonance frequency and Q to be anything you want it to be. In ported designs mechanical suspension create non uniform forces on the cone both radially and circumferentially causing twisting and shearing forces on the cone. The back pressure from the air inside is low at some frequencies where it flows through the port easily and high when it won't easily move through the port half an octave above and below resonance. Turbulence at both ends of the port only makes matters worse.
    Below resonance a ported design falls off at 24 db/octave so resonance is the lowest usable frequency. When critically damped (Q=0.707) falloff is 12 db per octave which is equalizable. Teledyne AR9, my main speakers in my best system uses two 12" acoustic suspension woofers. Because they are used as subwoofers only they have only part of the cabinet filled with stuffing. This creates two resonance frequencies, a high one well above the subwoofer's operating range in this 4 way design and one at around 28 hz with a Q of only 0.5. The speaker easily produces the 30 hz low frequency organ pedal tone at very loud volume without distortion from a 60 WPC amplifier.

    Size and efficiency are king when it comes to subwoofers. A larger cone moving less to produce the same SPL as a smaller cone will always be better, i.e. lower distortion, group delay, etc. If you model something like the JL 13" driver that they put in their Fathom subwoofers and compare it to a 21" pro driver like the Eminence NSW6061, the Eminence will have the same displacement on the low end with way higher output and power handling on the high end in the same size enclosure.
    I think too much effort is being put into making smaller subwoofer drivers with long excursion. These drivers still need a lot of volume to achieve the long excursions, and that volume could be used to fit a larger driver with lower excursion and more efficiency. It all just seems a little silly to me, but people are so fixated on excursion these days that this is what we get.

    • @draxxthemsklounst
      @draxxthemsklounst 7 місяців тому

      Also worth noting that the smaller high excursion driver is necessary if you want a smaller box. It’s trying to eke out as much performance as possible for a smaller/nice looking sub.
