holy cow i finally understand the "peter losing wendy" line. if you didn't know, taylor's songs betty, august, and cardigan are written in the perspective of 3 people in a love triangle (james, betty, and another girl). cardigan is in the POV of betty (who was cheated on). when i was listening to these songs i was thinking about how betty is seems way more grown up than james and she has a more mature perspective on their relationship. WELL the reason peter lost wendy was because wendy grew up and moved on. BETTY IS LIKE WENDY BECAUSE SHE GREW UP AND WOWOWOW i can't believe i didn't realize this before!! ok that's it. thoughts?
I dont think necessarily cheated on - I think it is abou the time Taylor and Harry almost got back togetheer following a reunite at awards, then he was with Kendall in a car like two days later, esentially leaving the opportunity to rekndle things with her.
"I knew you'd miss me once the thrill expired" pairs really well with the line in betty that goes "slept next to her, but dreamt of you all summer long"
theatre girl And people say that she can’t sing. Just because she can’t hit high notes as well when she’s singing live doesn’t mean that she isn’t ridiculously talented when it comes to songwriting or singing at the pitch that folklore is at.

"And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite." There's nothing more I can say. QUEEN!!!

I think it's time for schools to start teaching Taylor Swift's songs in literature classes.. this is a masterpiece alongside with "betty" and "august".
“And I knew you'd come back to me”. Unfortunately this is a certainty that not everyone can have after these difficult times. Thank you Taylor for heating our hearts with hope.
"Cardigan" is one of 3 songs believed to be part of what Taylor calls the "teenage love triangle" trilogy. According to me, cardigan is the first, written from the pov of betty (the girlfriend who is cheated on), "august" is the second written from the pov of the girl who James (the boyfriend) cheated on, "betty" is the conclusion written from the pov of James (the boyfriend) FIRST VERSE The first verse sets the mood of teenagehood with vintage T-shirts and excitement over new cell phones. "Sensual politics" could refer to the fact that when you're 18 you get to vote so you're new to the politcal world, or it could be a reference to the complicated social politics of high school. “When you are young, they assume you know nothing” is one of the most repeated lines in the song and is used to highlight how much Betty knows about love and pain (she has unfortunately become very experienced with both.) CHORUS Betty knows him, truly and deeply. She has an intimate understanding of him through the moments they shared in their relationship. The past tense of knew, however, means that things have changed. “Baby, kiss it better,” could be what he did for her once, at the beginning of their relationship, and what she hopes he will do now to ease the pain he has caused her. REFRAIN Betty often felt forgotten and like she was second best to those around her. James helped her to feel loved and seen. This feeling is likened to when a long lost item of clothing is found and is treasured once again. SECOND VERSE Because this song is connected to “august” and “betty,” we know that she is talking about James’s infidelity with another girl. By trying to have more, he has lost what mattered. Again, Betty shows her insight and her awareness of the situation, defying the cliche of a young person not having an understanding of life. SECOND CHORUS There is an innocence in the kinds of moments that Betty recalls in the second chorus. While the first chorus focuses more on a physical aspect of the relationship, the emphasis here is simple and emotional. BRIDGE The bridge combines the physical and emotional aspects of their relationship. She highlights that “all [they] needed” to be happy was each other’s company. James was able to give her not only healing, but help in appreciating and being at peace with her scars. Now, she is in more pain from the heartbreak he has caused her. THRID CHORUS In the third chorus, Betty focuses not on the comfort and joy of their time together, but on the tragic end of their romance. Even as he abandoned her for another girl and she watched him “steppin’ on the last train,” she still knew him. “Tried to change the ending” means that, at least in retrospect, their relationship seemed to always be heading towards heartbreak. “Peter losing Wendy” refers to the story of Peter Pan, who takes a girl named Wendy to Neverland: a place where no one ever grows up. Peter asks Wendy to stay with him, but as much as she values their adventures, she wants to go home and grow up. In the context of this song, the reference means that Betty is aware that James is the one lacking in maturity, and he is losing her because he won’t grow up. THIRD VERSE Far from a child who “know[s] nothing,” Betty is very knowledgeable of the acute betrayal and heartbreak that James has caused her. She muses with bitterness that she did predict the ways the relationship would haunt her after it ended. She knew that it would stay with her and that the memory of their time together would creep up on her when she was doing something as mundane as running errands, she knew that she would be furious for a long time with him, and she knew that one day he would beg her to take him back. She knew all of it. And though it’s left to the imagination, by the sound of it, it sounds like she also knew that the day he came back, she wouldn’t want him anymore. Every lyric is so well written this could legit be a movie. There is no doubt that Taylor is a lyrical genius and sorry that it's a little long just wanted to share my thoughts
"you put me on and said I was your favorite" putting someone on typically means to lead someone on, to tell they they're "your favorite" when that isn't entirely true. It's pure genius, not only the play on words(putting someone on like a cardigan) but the way Taylor is able to tap into these characters and not only feel they're pain, but make everyone else feel they're pain. By the end of the song our hearts bleed for this character Betty. Only to find out it was Taylor's storytelling all along.
Not a Taylor fan (nothing against her personally, just her music never suited my style), but I must admit that Folklore was/is a stunningly beautiful piece of work.

2019: Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years? 2020: Your heartbeat on the High Line Once in twenty lifetimes... So many feels with this album!!
"I knew you tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy" This whole song reminds me of "Love Story" without the happy ending. It's like the real story of Romeo and Juliet, that they grew up and learned the world, and knew they would not be together in the end. The same way the young Taylor Swift dreamed of a happy ending and then she grew up and realized the world is a harsher place than she imagined it would be, that endings will not always be happy, but somehow along the way, be the best journey yet...
Especially perfect for this rainy Friday in NJ during the year 2020 where nothing is certain, except of course for the fact that I will be playing these songs until playing these songs is not an option.

This is arguably one of her most imagery filled bridges ever. Every line is so powerful and emotive with so much detail and hidden depth and meaning to it. Wow, Taylor and bridges are match made in heaven cause they're always the best parts of an already incredible song!
I’ve noticed in Cardigan’s lyric video. The background is dark and melancholic. It shows how Betty felt about James infidelity. And I think Taylor chose Cardigan’s setting to be at the beach because it shows that Betty knew where James’ summer thing took place. Which in August’s lyrics “Salt air and rust on your door” confirmed that summer affair really happened there. In contrast to August’s lyric video. August’s background shows how Augustine sees the affair. It seems like a distant view of the beach and also it feels nostalgic. It is like a memory, slipping away. Because Augustine knew James, just like the salty air, she chould not keep him. And he was never truly hers.
1:24 'Playing hide and seek and giving me your weekends'. I could be wrong but hide and seek can refer to the time James was cheating on Betty with Augustine and only taking out time on weekends for Betty. She always knew something was up with James but couldn't believe a word Inez told regarding James cheating on her. She loved him enough that she didn't imagine him doing anything like that. Also, Betty has a mature perspective and didn't spend her time on petty gossips and stuff only to realize how wrong she was this time. 1:06 'A friend to all is a friend to none. Again, I'm only 14, so do not expect me to be right, but that line could mean that either Betty and Augustine were close friends or that James perceived her only as a friend but did more with her.
Imagine, Tomorrow Coronavirus cases drop tomorrow, Abusive police officers wake up and own up to their mistakes, and there wasnt any drama in the music/beauty industry! Taylor would go down in history as HERO/QUEEN Of saving 2020!!
I really feel like this is on Betty's perspective, a song for James. Betty: "I'm only seventeen, I don't know anything" Cardigan: "When you are young, they assume you know nothing"
Sydney Summers Taylor said that there are three songs that she calls the teenage love triangle and they’re fictional songs about a situation and characters she created in her head, one of them is Betty
i think i finally understand why taylor chose this video to run in the background. the video is of the waves coming back to the shore over and over again, no matter how many times it recedes back into the ocean. just like james came back to betty (whose perspective this song is written from). also she says "you'd come back to me" thrice in the bridge. WOW taylor, wow
I remember when I first heard this song I felt so serene inside. I really wanted to wrap this song in a beautiful gift box and send it to my crush from 15 years ago... I don't know how to explain what I felt at that time and how to even express it even now... It's so beautiful and soothing just like Taylor...
Throughout the entire song, she says "when you are young they assume you know nothing", and then, on the bridge, she screams "cause I knew everything when I was young" and I think that is so powerful

Yes ong
😢😊😊😊😊😊😮😮😮😢😅😮😅😮
You guys must listen 'betty', and then 'cardigan' and then 'august', the lyrics connecy to each other!!! And if you understand it, it's mindblowing
ikr! the connection of those three songs is one of my favorite things about this album!
Yes, Taylor herself told about that :)
A puzzle piece my mind is blown
Sumedha Jha when??
Yes! But I think it goes August, Betty, Cardigan (ABC) a perfect triangle.
2019: Have I known you twenty seconds or twenty years?
2020: Your heartbeat on the High Line Once in twenty lifetimes...
So many feels with this album!!
YOU DREW STARS AROUND MY SCARS BIT NOW IM BLEEEDINNNNJ
"I knew you tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy"
This whole song reminds me of "Love Story" without the happy ending.
Omg 😯 you said my thoughts. 😍😶
Tragic
Who else hasn't stopped playing Folklore songs all day? 💗
Especially perfect for this rainy Friday in NJ during the year 2020 where nothing is certain, except of course for the fact that I will be playing these songs until playing these songs is not an option.
Exile is amazing and Betty 🥰🥰🥰
Meeee
Me! Won’t stop until the tracking week is done
Spotify on one phone and UA-cam on the other ☺🌲💕🌾💫
I wish id listened this while raining. Like its perfect putting your earphones on while watching the rain in the windowsill and listening to folklore
SHA NE I’ve had a thunderstorm rolling as I’ve gone through this album & this comment just made me realize this fact. I’ve been engrossed in the music. I usually stop everything for the sound of a storm.
I swear I woke up this morning cause of a thunder at 6 am (the exact time the album dropped in my country) and then I just stayed the longest time on the balcony listening to this song, while raining- it was truly mystical esperience haha
Well what can i say . The album is like taking us back to her country music days .😍
Okay I actually did tho it was thundering and lightning here last night it was very calming and cool
oh girl did you read my mind? how did you do that?
"leaving like a father, running like water" i'll never get over this line
Taylor just takes you to a whole new world everytime.
Yea
@Alisa Davis yay!!!!
Music is my escape from reality and this album is literally my escape.
Couldn’t agree more
@Alisa Davis i have a twin brother ;)
This sounds and smells like Grammys song of the year
We can hope
Factss

@@andrea.hern10 I hope she wins it. It is for song writing.

"When you are young they assume you know nothing. But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss. I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs. The smell of smoke would hang around this long. Cause I knew everything when I was young." THESE ARE THE BEST SONG LINES IN THE HISTORY OF SONG LINES.
I can't explain how outstanding this album is. The lyricism is just insane.
hi
I feel calm and tranquil. The melody of the entire album is so soothing.
And when I felt like I was a *backyardigan*
The comment is underrated.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I hate everything rn
I hated those days when my younger cousins wanted to watch the backyardigans all damn day!! 😁😁
I just had flashbacks
Taylor Swift is not only a singer, songwritter, she is a storyteller
Fr,plus the way she sings it makes me think she's reading a romance book

Taylor Swift: Hold my cardigan.

"leaving like a father, running like water," is so hauntingly poignant. It gets me every damn time...
When I realised thats what she said I fell in love w the song again
I never liked Taylor, but once your heart gets so broken, you begin to understand her, to feel her songs, and that's simply beautiful.
it is
Yess. I always knew she had great lyrics, but didn’t fully realize how deep they cut. She writes and sings such complex feelings. Just gained a whole new appreciation for Taylor and other artists
I got chills from 2:30 to 3:16. Simply beautiful
THERE'S SO MUCH HAPPENING ON THIS PARTICULAR DAY.
-TAYLOR SWIFT'S SURPRISE ALBUM
-ONE DIRECTION 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
-DEMI LOVATO ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
-I HAVE TO CHOOSE COURSE FOR NEXT YEAR'S CLASSES

we are not mentioning problematic garbage in the same post as Tay and 1D
I have my exams results that will allow me to go to college today as well!
All the best to you!!
2020 really be messing with my emotions
Also Little Mix's new single Holiday is out. Plus Dua Lipa ft. J Balvin Un dia (One day) is also out 😍
This is arguably one of her most imagery filled bridges ever.
Again, I'm only 14, so do not expect me to be right, but that line could mean that either Betty and Augustine were close friends or that James perceived her only as a friend but did more with her.
no i think you're right. i was thinking the same. i was wondering why people didn't notice this
you’re extremely smart for a 14 yr old and i’m literally so inspired rn
@@user-vh8yf8qf1g oh ty!

Angela Khalil Please buy cardigan on iTunes for it to debut at no.1 in the bb100 charts
it reminds me more about Safe and Sound
Nope! It's more like Safe & Sound and The Last Time...
Everyone : I've been so productive the last 4 months.
Taylor swift : here's a new album please enjoy
Me to my future kids:
Just like that Taylor broke the curse and saved 2020 along with all of humanity
Imagine, Tomorrow Coronavirus cases drop tomorrow, Abusive police officers wake up and own up to their mistakes, and there wasnt any drama in the music/beauty industry! Taylor would go down in history as HERO/QUEEN Of saving 2020!!

This is giving me old Taylor vibes but like old Taylor 2.0
Old Taylor: who are you?
Folklore Taylor: I am you, but stronger.

True, the old Taylor comes back home!! Welcome home Taylor:)
Same here
stop criticizing her
James is Peter
Betty is Wendy
August girl is Tinkerbell
Or princess Tiger Lily 😂
I don't know who were james and betty can you plz tell me.
Yeeeees. August girl is called Inez :)

"Leaving like a father" hits hard
People in the southern hemisphere are blessed because they get to listen to this album for the first time during winter 💙💙💙
I really feel like this is on Betty's perspective, a song for James.
Betty: "I'm only seventeen, I don't know anything"
Cardigan: "When you are young, they assume you know nothing"
Yes and August is about the other girl
Curious... what are you referencing?
Sydney Summers Taylor said that there are three songs that she calls the teenage love triangle and they’re fictional songs about a situation and characters she created in her head, one of them is Betty
@@rheadorothea3482 Thank you!
Yeah! and the “I knew you’d miss me when the thrill expired and you’d be standing in my front porch light”
This whole album gives me foggy, misty, chilly and calm winter vibes
So true
Am I the only one that loves the simple aesthetic of the lyric videos?
I really don't get ppl who hates Taylor. Jealousy is a very dangerous thing. Stay pressed too.
"I knew you'd haunt all of my what ifs"
literally makes me cry 😃 this song hits different when you miss a boy
😭😭folklore is so brilliant lyrically
😭😭😭
We don't talk enough about that line
Edit: this line alone should've won SOTY
This is so sad
i think i finally understand why taylor chose this video to run in the background. the video is of the waves coming back to the shore over and over again, no matter how many times it recedes back into the ocean. just like james came back to betty (whose perspective this song is written from). also she says "you'd come back to me" thrice in the bridge. WOW taylor, wow
Who’s listening to this masterpiece in 2024?
For the first time ❤
The whole album is so warm and calming, I think that's why the single is Cardigan! ❤️❤️
“When you are young they assume u know nothing “ every asian felt that line
Yeah huhu
They never stop assuming that tbh.
@@vanshtickoo1341 truee
True
facts
Cardigan - “to kiss in cars and downtown bars is all we needed”
Betty - “standing in your cardigan, kissing in my car again”
Just noticed that, amazing songs ❤️
I remember when I first heard this song I felt so serene inside. I really wanted to wrap this song in a beautiful gift box and send it to my crush from 15 years ago... I don't know how to explain what I felt at that time and how to even express it even now... It's so beautiful and soothing just like Taylor...
Are you an author or poet? You have a way with words
You're not alone. 14 years later
The vivid imagery that her songs inspire in my imagination are the reason I keep coming back to her. Really, Taylor’s a poet. No less.
"leaving like a father" makes me teary eye.
It's like we're listening to Taylor Swift for the first time all over again! 😍
1:48 you put me on and said I was your favorite
Throughout the entire song, she says "when you are young they assume you know nothing", and then, on the bridge, she screams "cause I knew everything when I was young" and I think that is so powerful
She just gave us another masterpiece. I'm not complaining, this is so calming...
When she said "when you are young, they assume you know nothing" I felt that
I ain’t no swiftie but this song sounds so beautiful it brings me to a warm place where there is no bad things just peace.
Me: mommmmmmm I'm D-E-A-D
MOM: Taylor is releasing her 8th album
Me: I'm in heaven
Sameeeee. Gurl or boy. I get so fricking excited. It actually feels like heaven.
