- Held every two years, the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition is back after a four-year hiatus. Over 500 companies from some 30 countries are showcasing their latest technologies in both hardware and software. Some US$4 billion of deals and pledges are expected during the five-day event. Malaysia, which saw a 10% defence budget increase this year, has placed an order for 18 FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea. Its military and civil defence are in desperate need of system upgrade, as current assets are said to be old and outdated.

It's interesting to note that Korea is now under international spotlight with its growing arms manufacturing capabilities. And in the middle east region, Turkiye is doing great as well.
Turkey's technology is derived from Korea and they are still not out of Type 1. The original technology is all in Korea, and if we work together in Korea than Turkey, which makes copies, upgrades and technology transfers will be easier than Turkey.

FA-50 is like light version of F-16 Viper by Lockheed Martin. FA-50 also developed by KAI and Lockheed Martin, so it is NATO compliant. Looking at sanctions at Russia may last for many years, better avoid getting any Russia linked fighter jets.
It is not just the sanctions. The quality is suspect.
They look like good fighter jets. How is the price compared to other similar jets?

It's the only nation in Southeast Asia that has taken an active role in peaceful settlement to conflicts in all these countries. It has also contributed the largest peacekeeping forces to the UN among Southeast Asian nations. So yes, Malaysia is a leader for peaceful settlements in Southeast Asia. Thailand is already a user of FA-50s although they classified it as T-50s, while Vietnam will not buy FA-50s anytime soon as they already have Yak-130s that has the same functions as the FA-50s.

But I'm curious tho, how well will it hold up against frontline fighters such as an f15, Rafale or China's sukhoi copies, cause as I understand it Malaysia's air force is low on frontline fighters and the longevity of its Flankers is questionable due to the ongoing Ukraine war hindering spare parts and maintenance. Can the FA50 defend their airspace? After all it has AESA and BVR abilities
@@casper2694 FA-50 is a light combat aircraft (LCA), different class compared to Rafale, F-15, F/A-18 etc. It is mostly for light combat, reconnaissance, trainer aircraft, or bomb ground targets that don't have any proper anti-air defense.
To fight against superior aircraft currently they have F/A-18D and Su-30MKM but yeah need to replace them soon...

Malaysia don't need to buy big jet right now. Singapore plenty and more advance. Singapore surely wiil help as per defence agreement and they surely will be heavely effected if malaysia in war. Indonesia also won't keep quiet as there ar atleast 3m indonesian people in Malaysia.

If not mistaken FA-50 radar supplies by Elta. An Israel defence company. So, how to replace it? Korean own radar still in development and testing.
Why would Malaysia modify the aircraft? It just doesn’t make any commercial or practical sense. They could have specified the specs it wanted before placing the order.
If you want your warranty and your spare parts supply being rebuked, or worse, being sued by the manufacturer themselves then be my guest. Modifications without permissions from the manufacturer is an unlawful practice, your contract agreement can be declared void
If Malaysia really wants to make modifications that bad, they could've opted for a technological transfer or even apply for license to construct FA-50 derivative themselves which is more legal

It's all about the cost and needs bro. One F35 Jet fighter cost about USD 6.8 million to maintain annually, in addition with one squadron. Military fighter jets are notoriously expensive to maintain. Once could buy the jets, but do they have the budget to cover it? Even US had to retire F22 Raptor from service due to cost and maintenance issues. One can buy as many as they want but the jets end up grounded in hangar due to budget constraints. If a country focuses too much on its military expenditure, other sectors will be negatively affected. Look at arab and african countries, they buy all the latest equipment, but they neglect the citizens own welfare.
