Honestly, as a girl, I'd want to live in a little of both. I'd do the Spartan military training, but maybe disguise myself as a boy to attend Athenian school, so that I could learn all the philosophy and literature. Then I'd go back to Sparta and live my life.
That's pretty much interesting as I would be interested in both as well... Yeah! Use military skills to stay invisible yet visible and use my persuasive skills, learned at Athenian school, to talk my way through awkward encounters.
I would live in neither, Athens was nationalistic and arrogant in a poisonous manner, Sparta had more equality but was much more brutal. I was born with scarred lungs and a heart murmur, I would have been thrown out as a baby though I'm fit and athletic now Sparta would not have given me the chance to develop.
@@StarRider253 It is, because unfortunately Athens had the same issue. When Athens was disgusted by Sparta's slaves, it was because they were Greek, not because they were slaves. Furthermore, Athens was much more imperialistic, and completely annihilated cities enslaving the women and children. Both cultures are immoral and have evil elements, hence my answer.
@@spartanparty3894 That's definitely correct but I just took issue with Sparta being described as more equal. For women, perhaps, but in general no. They were both slavery societies like you described. I'm not super familiar with Athenian slavery but didn't they have greek slaves as well? I know the Helots in Sparta were greek
In Sparta, girls were regularly defeat boys in wrestling. The girls wrestled topless and were wearing during the matches a tiny leather skirt but the boys were completely naked. (Pausanias)
A man would obviously choose to live in Athens because the system there favors him like the democracy, and a woman would obviously choose to live in Sparta because the system there favors her.
Comparing Sparta and Athens, Plato said that any society that doesn't give the same rights and opportunities to both genders deprives itself of half of its members.
Ugh how she says Ekklesia is somewhat annoying. Lol. Being Greek n knowing how it's really pronounced. But I don't fault her because learning Greek is most definitely one of the hardest languages to learn. Shit I can't really speak it myself but I understand it more then I can speak it. It pronounced Eh-Cla-Sia.
Everyone does the dying in a world controlled by war. We all die, and the starved out ones that didn't steal as well probably would have contributed more to society then the more kleptoparasitic by nature. the kleptoparasitic would thrive in certain niches, but that's not a reason for them to make rules.
Athens vs Sparta, which city would you have chosen to live in and why? Let us know in the comments below!
When Epicurus opened his "garden" (school, basically) in Athens, he admitted women. I would rather live as an Epicurean in Athens any day.
Athens!
In Constantinople a pure Greek city, when it's liberated and given back to Greece.
Thank you. This was exactly the information I needed for my school work.
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you! Saved me for my history exam :) Exactly what i was looking for
Glad it helped!
I'd live in Athens. I'm more for learning than fighting.
Same, though I would at least try to understand self defense. Do you think they had conceal-and-carry for a sword?
You'd still have to fight

I love your channel! I have adhd and studying for an ancient greek exam writing is really hard but this channel has helped me SO MUCH. Amazing work!!
We love hearing that! Thanks, Beatrice, and good luck with your studies! 😊
Very well explained.Thankyou.
Glad it was helpful!
They both had both good and bad things about them both. But if I had to choose it would be Athens.
Yeah

A society where 75%+ of the population are enslaved is not "more equality"

@@StarRider253 They had Greek slaves through war, instead of a steady population of locals like with the Spartans.
It would be great if a kid were with an Athenian father and a Spartan mother living in Kefalonia.
Then u won't get Athenian citizenship
Good clear introduction to them both.
Being a father of three beautiful daughters and advocating the breaking of the glass ceiling in the corporate world; Sparta for me no doubt.

Good lecture, but why dont you include short movie to emulate the life in both sparta and athens
@Zahid Wazir I- come down Jamal don’t pull out the 9

I think I would have lived in Sparta.
Thank you for the video.

Ok I'd want to live in Athens but only if it had extra military backup by an ally of some sort
Athens had some good ideas.
They did indeed. Thanks for watching!

Sparta cuz I will have more rights as a woman
IDC
Why do you exclude the self destructing humanity hating mindset of Sparta?

women ruled in Sparta not kings ! women has wealth and power in Sparta If you are man your main focus war all important things done by women
Athens ..
It makes sense that in a world controlled by war, the people that do the fighting - and dying- to protect their land, get the right to make the rules.
