      I don't think I agree 100%. Because when Spike dies, she still has to be a vampire slayer. It's not because of Spike that she's not the only vampire slayer anymore. Willow did that, unleashing the power of the scythe seconds before the final battle. Spike did step up and sacrifice himself, you're right. Without that necklace he wore, Buffy and the rest may have died in the fight or soon enough after. But I don't think he did it *because* she didn't want to be the one. He did it because he loved her.

    I truly feel that the reason this is so powerful is the line, “And I understand with perfect clarity exactly what you are. You’re a hell of a woman.” He doesn’t define her as the chosen one or the slayer. Her strength and how she tries is not because of her abilities or her responsibilities but who she is as a person. It’s such a sharp contrast to the earlier parts of the episode where all of her friends and the potentials see her only as the slayer.

But, I'll never be able to get onboard with the Buffy and Angel team. I get that Angel is her first love, and she'll always have that deep feeling for him, but from the Angel side of the relationship... Angel loses his soul and becomes Angelus, a monster who torments her, and enjoys it. That is who Angel is without the guardrails of a soul. Spike, without a soul, falls for Buffy. Everything he says in this clip isn't because he has a soul. He got the soul because he felt this way without it and wanted to be "worthy" of being with her. Not to sound like a prude, but I find it interesting that while several other couples (or just two people getting together in Faith and Robin's case) have sex in this episode, a couple that for the most part have been fighting or having sex as part of their physical relationship, can just be there in the moment and take comfort from just being close to each other. You’re not a prude. It’s beyond beautiful. It’s true intimacy. You realized that for Spike and Buffy, especially with their past, having the night they had was the most profound thing they could share. It was a thousand times deeper than sex. I wanted so badly for them to at least kiss in S7, and now when I re-watch, I realize that focusing just on their eyes and how they are acting with their expressions, we got so much more than a kiss. We got a deep loving relationship.

    • @3SailorMartin
      @3SailorMartin 3 роки тому +24

      @@steffnic13 this is one of the reasons I loved season 7. Buffy and Spike's relationship became what it was meant to be. They understood each other more than most people will ever understand another. That is why, I believe, Buffy was able to bring herself to leave him in the final episode. She knew it was something he HAD to do. That to do otherwise would make him less of a person, so to speak.

    • @rachaelknudsen8801
      @rachaelknudsen8801 2 роки тому +10

      I don't think it's prudish. It's complex storytelling. When the world is ending (again), some people reach for the disposable comfort of the new and temporary. Some reach for deeper and more lasting, and more rooted affection. That's knowing that different people will react differently to the same circumstances and that enriches the story. A study in contrasts.

    Sometimes, just having someone, ANYONE, tell you they love you without asking for anything in return can heal so many hurts. Or at least begin to. Shit, Buffy saved the world over and over again, knowing she’d never truly be recognized for it. To have someone tell her she added to their lives just by being in it-not because they needed her to save them-must have been a relief and a half.

      But Buffy was recognized for what she did. Over and over again. 'She saved the world. A lot' is on her tombstone. She's not supposed to have friends as the Slayer, but she does and they constantly show her how great she and her cause is by giving up their lives to her service. They also love her just for who she is and not just because she saves them: they are fighters alongside her who frequently save Buffy as well, not dependent victims. Giles tells her what a great Slayer she is and is so proud of her. Her long list of successes validate her whether anyone else sees them or not; she has to know from that her life has worth and meaning and purposeful effect. She wins 'Class Protector' and her entire graduating class fights the Mayor with her.
      Buffy may well have felt lonely because no one (except Kendra/Faith at first, Angel, Spike, and to some extent Riley) shared her fighting responsibility. But it didn't make sense to me for her to feel unacknowledged. Everything she did was acknowledged as being special. 'One girl in all the world. She is the Slayer.' That's a heck of a recognition if you ask me!
      Not that romantic recognition like Spike's isn't always nice as well.

      @@cmm5542 Yes but just before this scene, she’d been thrown out of her own house by the sister she’d died to save, the friends that had fought by her side and all the potentials. Anya said that she didn’t choose her powers she just got lucky- she’d died to save the world twice and even though a new slayer had been called in Kendra then Faith, she chose to continue fighting even though her job was done, she’d sent Angel to a hell dimension, she’d risked her life constantly only to be repaid by her friends turning their backs on her. I don’t think anyone really recognised everything she’d risked and sacrificed for everyone constantly except Spike, she didn’t even get an apology.

    • @3SailorMartin
      @3SailorMartin 2 роки тому +8

      The speech that really solidified it for me was where she found out he had a soul. I know some fans have problems with this season but there's a reason why it's my second favorite (season 5 being the first) and it is ALL to do with the development of Spike's and Buffy's relationship and I'm not talking about the romantic side. They developed so much understanding for each other in this season, I know people like Giles and Xander thought it was because they had feelings for each other but that wasn't it at all (not that they didn't have feelings for each other, they did, but the understanding went beyond that). They knew each other inside and out and were not so much blinded to the other's faults but able to look past them so they could help each other in ways the other people in the story would never have thought of and also help the other become the person they truly wanted to be but couldn't have made it on their own. Without Spike no one would have made it to the final battle. If nothing else, Buffy would probably have given up after they kicked her out and Faith and the others with her would have died in their quest leaving the few potentials at the house vulnerable to attack and easy pickings.

    • @cmm5542
      @cmm5542 Рік тому +4

      Spike is the best character. But that doesn't make Spuffy the best relationship. She treated Angel better than she did Spike; that's my reason. Just because Spike was tough enough to take Buffy's combined scorn and neediness after a century with Drusilla doesn't mean he didn't deserve better than that. Buffy cared for Angel as much as he did her; that is a necessary foundation for any good, healthy adult relationship. Even if Buffy and Angel could never work out, Buffy should have applied those same principles to a relationship that could have worked for her, which is not what she did for Spike. She just used him. Even in this scene he's just taking care of her needs; Buffy's not even aware Spike also has needs to be taken care of! (Willow was, though. And Joyce, and Dawn, and even Anya.)

    • @achicken21
      @achicken21 Рік тому +4

      @@cmm5542 I definitely agree! I don't like the Team Angel or Team Spike stuff because we're talking about a relationship. Spike is by far my favorite character, and I wish that Spuffy could be real, but in the universe of the show we were given I don't think it should be (at least not without a lot of work, therapy, personal growth, etc). A lot of people take this to mean that I like Angel more than Spike but really it just means I care about Spike enough that I don't want to push a relationship onto him that would be unfair, unhealthy, and one-sided. Buffy needs to see Spike as an equal person first, not someone to use because they're willing to sacrifice everything for her.

    Spike is hot as hell, with an ancient, poetic soul that got lost along the way. In his pure vampire form, he lost his soul and did terrible things. And still being a monster, for Buffy, he went after his lost soul.
    Having that human part back, he felt the weight of each evil act and entered into reflective conflict. Spike missed a lot!

    I've seen this first when I was 14. Many times more. I had VHS with this episode. I shipped Spuffy for years. I rewatched it probably until I was 21. I haven't seen this episode for years now - I'm 30. I rewatched the whole TV show and got to this point. I cried like a baby yesterday even though I remember every single line. I rewatched it today, and still crying. This is way deeper than I could understand when I was 14 or 20. You have to go through many levels of self-acceptance, admitting you're closed off for people and so on, and learn to love yourself to watch the pure beauty of this scene years later. Understand how much more this scene is. And also Buffy - Buffy is such a heroine that there is no other. In the end of every episode of this show I wanted to hug Buffy because I don't want her to suffer anymore and because she's such a good person. And this scene, now, was like the epitome of that feeling. It's like me, a viewer, telling Buffy that she's the one. She is the best damn personality on the TV screen. And through her you can also see how you grow over years. This is amazing. This show is so much more than anything in the world ever created.

      completely agree with you! Buffy is a heroine and has the weight of the world on her shoulders, her friends are waiting for her to work out everything and She always has to be perfect, in the end they turn their backs on her because she has to make unpopular decisions; Angel is her first love (no one can deny it), but he doesn't let her free to be herself, he controls her, finally he leaves her because he's selfish.
      Spike at the beginning hates her, then he loves her (just before the chip, Drusilla says it clearly "I knew before you did, I knew you loved the slayer") and this love changes how Spike changes, first it is selfish because he has no soul, then it's based on trust, strength, depth .... Spike is the only one who really knows Buffy and vice versa

    I always get a little tear at this scene. Beautifully done. For all the big overblown action scenes and fighting this show does the delicate understated stuff like this better than most ‘regular’ shows. Spike was a very easy character to overcook, overplay and spoil but JM’s portrayal is just perfect. One of the very best characters ever on any screen ever IMO. It’s all still as good in 2022 as it was 25 years ago.

    She could lose her powers, she could have never have had them - but who she is draws Spike in. As a vampire he operated like an animal and still did a damn good job for the most part keeping himself in check. Those were real tears falling from his face when she died. But he hated himself to understand without a soul he will always end up treating Buffy wrong, so he was willing to die to get one because he couldn't be around her anymore without it.

    "I'm not asking you for anything" is perhaps the most pure way to offer someone affection and words of affirmation. I mean truly, how relatable is it to be praised by a partner as a form of manipulation or a way to fish for their own validation?
    It's nice to see Spike sees that here, especially given his history with Buffy and what he did to her. I think having a soul was the first time he could ever realize he literally wasn't capable of love before, he only "loved" Buffy like a trophy, like a possession. And the only reason he went for a soul was because she didn't want him, not because it was "right." But here we see the end of that journey; the shame and subsequent self-improvement that happened. It's like watching someone graduate therapy!

    • @x-man9473

      And in return of constantly trying to change and be a better person, he got what?
      The loss of his girlfriend Drusilla?
      Alienated from the entire demon world?
      Relentlessly insulted and antagonized by Buffy and her peers?
      Mixed signals from Buffy for 3 straight seasons?
      A meaningless "I love you" that he didn't even believe before he died?
      If the message of the show is to teach people to better themselves purely because it's the right thing to do, they shouldn't make the "improving person" lose everything and gain nothing. It makes the message fall flat.

    • @poppermintee

      Before any of that, he had killed people. He had lied, cheated. He had done a lot of terrible things. Look, I’m Spike’s fan, and am all for his redemption arc. And this is it. His redemption.
      He didn’t die and lose everything, you don’t get it at all. At the last moments of his life, he understood that he was wrong. And he was happy that he understood that. There is peace when you understand what you did wrong and peace in knowing that maybe you are doing your best to make up for it.
      You don’t get how at the last possible moments of his life here (even if Spike appears again in Angel’s show) that he was in love. He truly understands a lot of things he didn’t when he didn’t have a soul. Now, he is grateful for it even if in the end he dies. And no, he didn’t lose everything, he slowly gained Dawn and Buffy’s trust again, and they love him for it. Maybe not everyone’s and certainly not everyone stands up and claps for his achievements but hardly that would happen for every little good thing you do in your life.
      If you expect there would be celebration, people clapping every time you do good stuff, then it would make your life miserable indeed. You would keep asking why no one appreciates you, why no one cares, when maybe they do, but you just look at it from the wrong angle.
      Sometimes the world isn’t fair to people who try to get up after getting down, but you could choose. You could choose to dwell on the unfairness of it all, or make up for what you did was wrong and gain people’s trust again. That’s possible, doable. But not everyone has strength to do it. Spike did though. He admitted his wrong, cared for people who he loved, and made sure that they understood and that he would change. That’s the start.
      At this point, if he didn’t die, I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone would accept him. Buffy did all good things and still her friends didn’t believe in her, see? But she is still a good person.
      In the comic, Buffy dated him and loved him. He had friends, and he was kinda happy. So there you go? Isn’t this better than him hurting everyone he loves because he didn’t bother understanding what he did wrong?

    • @x-man9473
      @x-man9473 11 місяців тому +1

      @@poppermintee
      >"He didn’t die and lose everything, you don’t get it at all"
      -He, by definition, lost everything.
      -When he was evil, he had a girlfriend, minions working for him, a reputation of defeating Slayers, and he was taken seriously.
      -Since falling in love with Buffy, what exactly did he get? Buffy giving him mixed signals? Denying her feelings one moment, then leading him on the next. No friendship in the demon world or the Scooby Gang. The inability to hurt humans for nearly the rest of the series despite having violent impulses. Bullied by people who he would otherwise kill if he didn't have a chip in his head. Used by Buffy to help her get over her depression.
      -He didn't get a single substantive thing for his redemption arc. There's supposed to be reasons for people to redeem themselves. Spike is barely given a legitimate reason other than "maybe Buffy will like him in some distant future".
      >"At the last moments of his life, he understood that he was wrong. And he was happy that he understood that."
      -So in other words, meaningless word salad? He received nothing substantive.
      >"And no, he didn’t lose everything, he slowly gained Dawn and Buffy’s trust again, and they love him for it."
      Where does it show that he received Dawn's trust?The only interaction she had with him this season was in episode 2 where she threatened him. She's never confirmed or showed that she "trusts him".
      -And neither did any of the main characters, who actively fought against Buffy's decision to trust him all season long.
      -All of this is your own made up interpretation that was never shown on screen.
