So whenever horror icon like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, or Jason Voorhes returns. It’s all fine and dandy. But when William Afton returns then we have a problem. That doesn’t make sense.
Here's the thing: William Afton isn't a major horror icon, not on their lengths. The series wasn't supposed to be only about him. For the title 'Five Nights at Freddy's the focus has been shifting more and more from Freddy to William. The thing is: Where can you go from a story perspective with a character that has shown himself with airtight plot armor who went from a child murderer to an immortal rabbit fursona? Saying that aloud sounds exciting, but the fact 'I always come back' has become a meme clearly shows William has become more of a joke character than anything else.
@@critrabbit8975 Actually, William isn’t powered by plot armor. He is powered by an iron will to live, he fears death, he fears the consequences of his actions. William knows if there’s a hell there’s a special place reserved for him. So deep down he’s just a coward.
His first actual physical appearance in springtrap is still the best look he’s ever had. Truly that design was badass and his other designs just haven’t come close to its perfection. Like the fact in fnaf 3 we would see William try to rip off the suit and you see his mutilated corpse inside the suit was very scary.
This springtrap design sucked as of lately, Help Wanted's terrible overly light green, goofy eyes and purple organs, fnaf AR's non sensical stretchy mouth and plastic-looking organs
@@ImperialZorn686 The model always looked plastic, because Scott has the modeling skills of an early Aardman Entertainment. It was covered up completely by the amazing texturework and lighting.
I think having burntraps inner gore with og springtraps suit would be like peak design, og springtraps gore is incredibly unrealistic and felt like just a weird endoskeleton to me. i guess that's why Scotts original games before fnaf were called robot-y. I think more distinct gums, decaying gore, tendons, ligaments, and cracked/dried teeth would benefit the design alot.
@@sludgeskin Well a man still being alive in a mutilated costume isn’t realistic either but we don’t question it. Like comparing spring traps multiple designs they just don’t match up with each other. Scott has more experience designing animatronics than designing human characters cause the proportions for the mutilated corpse of William changes.
In my opinion William Afton was at his best in FNAF 3 when he was Springtrap. A man who refuses to die by just willpower and anger is terrifying and the springtrap costume really adds to the horror.
I agree after spring trap it just wasn’t the same scarp trap was a huge down grade glitch trap was cool I like his more unique desire and burn trap was ok btw I’m talking about design
I interpreted him as someone kept just on the brink of death by the suit, but also unable to die because the suit is somehow sustaining him. Any wrong move and he dies, but for now, he's on suit power.
William's transition into weird mad scientist necromancer man also came packaged with something I don't hear mentioned often: his change in attitude regarding BEING Springtrap. In FNAF 3 it's made crystal clear that Afton is miserable. He's gasping for air, trying to tear himself from the suit, and it's what makes his death in Night 5's minigame so karmatic. Since FNAF 6, he's displayed a strange smarmy pride in what's happened to him. He sees his flesh prison as some sort of genius invention and proof of his research's efforts. I'd like to think it's more of him having lost his marbles but he comes across as... TOO coherent for that to hold. Part of me kinda wished you got to see more of his inhuman bone-ear face too, it's just as uncanny as an actual animatronic.
Yeah, I think FNaF 6 ruined Springtrap’s poetic and karmic nature. I wish Scraptrap was more feral and antagonistic, being upset with the cards he was dealt and seeking out some kind of personal “revenge” against the two he hates most and just so happen to be on the same team in this new Freddy’s location: Michael and Henry.
Scraptraps design is really cool and creepy, it's just permanently stuck with a terrible model. Imagine what we could have gotten if scott knew how to model a mummified human head instead of what we got
@@Skibbutz I don’t even think a better design would redeem the way his character was spun. To me, Scraptrap either would need an entire overhaul to work or to be entirely cut from the plot. Trying to have Afton play everything up in taking credit for the stupid things he does and somehow still being this calm and rational despite sitting behind a wall for decades is so hilariously bad.
@@OutOfNameIdeas819 I suspect that Springtrap is not really William Afton. It's more like William Afton is a part of the suit and Sammy Emily (the most likely soul that possesses Springtrap BEFORE fnaf3 and fnaf2) is the main will with the drive to kill Michael and calmly see the world burn. William is suffering and the other soul takes pleasure in his suffering. Staging it as a tragic play, "Bittersweet, but fitting." Glamrock Freddy also acts a lot more like William than Burntrap does to Gregory. He also claims that his soul used to be down there. Which means it comes from the Blob (which is unlikely. considering the heads) or Burntrap.
@@justice8718 I’m sorry buts that’s the most unbelievable theory I’ve ever heard Even miketrap is more believable I love Sammy Emily(He’s the main character in a FNAF AU I made) But we have 0 proof he’s in the games
"I don't hate you but you need to stay out of my way" can probably mean that Charlie is focused on causing Happiest Day, and while she isn't particularly hateful of Afton, she recognises that he is a threat to that in some way. That is also why seeing him powerless is like music to her - he can't screw up what she's trying to do now.
^cassidy's rage is highlighted for this reason. charlie has always been tamer, being the "give gifts give life" one. it's about saving the kids, not hating the killer for her.
@@starpiececonnectingfeelings that's summat interesting; if you go and look, Charlie has always been characterized as being selfless, as opposed to the vengeful part of Golden Freddy, whatever name the fandom wants to give them
@@starpiececonnectingfeelings I'm not just talking UCN, from Give Gifts, Give Life to Henry's speech, to SAVETHEM in a way, that's a consistent part of Charlie's character, at least as a human
"i will never let you leave, i'll never let you rest." vs "i don't hate you, but you need to stay out of my way." cool contrast! kinda shows a more emotional side of the spirits of the kids.
Squimpus McGrimpus' version of Afton is definitely my favorite. Instead of being a scientist who killed children so that he could bring his son back, he was just insane, killing other children because he wanted to kill Michael but couldn't because it would get him caught. The motive is so much simpler and so much more interesting than what ended up happening with him. The fact that he just died and went to Hell after the equivalent of FNAF 3 instead of coming back so many times you just don't care anymore is also a major bonus.
too bad squimpus themselves is not a good person (grooming a minor) that doesn't detract from how amazing of a character afton is in that series and even with me hating squimpus i will never stop loving his depiction of afton
Oh christ, I remember when there were still edgy kids trying to say "NoOoOo HiS nAmE iS vInCeNt!!!!!!" after his name was revealed to be William when the book trilogy and SL released. Also, didn't the toast thing come from the fact that people were joking about PG's badge looking like a piece of bread? Lmao
I enjoy afton's dialogue. It doesn't make him more frightening, but I enjoy an arrogant, smarmy villain. My biggest issue with Afton as a character is this (Bare with me): I love Michael Myers. A hulking monstrosity with no clear motivation who is next to impossible to predict or stop for long. I love Freddy Krueger, an evil man who revels in his evilness and is having fun with it, making jokes at the expense of his victims. Both of these villains arch types are things I enjoy watching. HOWEVER, You can't have Michael Myers in a movie and the the next time we see him he's making puns and laughing at his victims, and this is what Scott did with Afton. By making him no longer the hulking metal and flesh monstrosity, hunting you without context or reason, and just deciding 'He's actually fully sapient and in control of himself and speak easily now' it kind of shatters both villainous archetypes and leaves you with just an inconsistent mess
This a stupid argument. Just because william is a monster doesn't he still isn't human. Anthropomorphizing him Isn't humanizing him. I prefer him being treated like a clown. Also the problem is that scoot didn't have voice actors or budget to make william the way he wanted from the beggining.
@@johnjordan211 Are you taking this from Scot's own words? All the animatronics were silent, why would he treat springtrap differently? And besides if he truly wanted to give him a voice, he should have been able to, it's just one character and he wouldn't be chatting us up for the entire night
@@CReiKampa48 because they don't have reanimated corpses inside them that could speak. Also he couldn't have in fnaf 3. How many voice actors did fnaf have in 3? And why do you think he gave him a voice in fnaf 6 instead? Almost every animatronic since fnaf 5 has voice lines lmao and to security breach the trend continues.
@@johnjordan211 Fnaf 1 and 2 sold pretty well, so he most likely had the budget. Scott most likely had a different mindset about the charackter back than.
William Afton could have been a great "Ghostface" style killer who killed children in the 80's and got trapped in a springlock suit and was finally defeated chronologically in fnaf 3 and then the next set of games could’ve been about vanny as a copycat killer in the present day. I really think what would have way more compelling than mad scientist immortal robot corpse who becomes a virus that infects a beta tester
The current form of Afton is a consequence of fnaf becoming a franchise, never ending, always having to keep going, always having to come back and be explained. Mystery made the purple guy but the mystery isn't really there any more
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 You were right about the issue of escalation, Afton just couldn't escape transforming from the vaguely implied instigator of a haunting to the central driving force/antagonist of a sci fi mythology lmao
I think the Puppet saying that she doesn't hate William suggests a contrast between her and Cassidy-that she's moved on and is at peace, that Charlotte proper isn't present here. This also lines up with her saying 'the others are like animals' as she views the lasting hatred of the others towards William to be detrimental to themselves. The Puppet has always been somewhat detached from the other animatronics-watching over them as a guardian as presented in Pizzeria Simulator's Lorekeeper ending with her grave being on a hill overlooking the others. I think her presence in UCN is either as a recreation made by Cassidy (as I suspect with the other animatronics) or as the only other spirit there besides Cassidy. I can imagine her being there to try and get Cassidy to rest, viewing Afton as a roadblock to her goal rather than object of hate-thus explaining 'I don't hate you, but you need to stay out of my way'. She doesn't LIKE Afton, god no-but she ultimately cares more about saving kids and bringing them to peace than revenge. Also, there's far more evidence suggesting we play as William. Sure, we don't control him in the Old Man Consequences section, but I doubt William is literally watching the anime cutscenes either. Moreover, Henry damned him to hell in Pizzeria Simulator in the previous game so this makes sense as a continuation. Here are some lines which I think best suggest that William is the one you play as: (Nightmare Fredbear) 'This time, there's more than an illusion to fear': References the idea of the nightmares being the product of illusion discs, something only William would know about. (Jacko Chica, Mangle etc) 'The ONE you shouldn't have killed': 'The ONE' implies specificity-we can really only ascribe one death on Michael's hands. (Nightmare): 'I am your wickedness made of flesh' and 'I am here to claim what's left of you': Only William can truly be said to be 'wicked' in this franchise. Also, 'what's left of you' could be referring to William being devoid of humanity or as a literal husk given what happened after his springlock failure. (Nightmarrione): 'I am the fearful reflection of what you have created': There's no way this line could refer to Michael but it fits William in both that he created the animatronics and killed Charlie-who Nightmarrione is a reflection of. (Nightmare Freddy): 'I am remade, but not by you': Him specifying 'not by you' suggests he's speaking to someone who created animatronics or created the nightmares specifically-both of which could be attributed to William.
I definitely agree that Afton has seriously declined since his introduction, but I think there are definitely still many redeeming qualities to his character that most don't acknowledge. I really do think Afton's claims of being in control are basically just him justifying his failures by emphasizing the benefits and downplaying the obvious downsides. He's a megalomaniacal serial child killer, in his mind he didn't fail by getting springlocked, he was just getting himself an immortal body. He didn't fail by accidentally getting his son and daughter killed by his robots, they were just collateral damage in the pursuit of science. He isn't a scheming genius, he's just trying to pretend to be one. I think people take his voice lines too seriously, they aren't facts, they're just Afton trying to retroactively make himself feel better for his numerous blunders. They're overwritten because that's how a megalomaniac wannabe scientist serial killer would talk. The games have never told us William was a genius, he has. This is the man who started his killing spree by killing a kid literally right in front of a restaurant, killed more kids and his plan to hide the bodies was to stuff them in the suits, made murder robots to kill even more kids to try to bring his son back to life and got his daughter killed, and we just listen to him when he claims to be in complete control? Afton is just a bumbling serial killer who repeatedly got lucky and got away with his sloppy crimes due to the sheer incompetence of everyone else around him and a quack scientist who saw robots acting strangely and decided that it must be the spirits of the kids that he killed. Sure he got away with his murder spree, sure he was right that there were ghosts in his animatronics, even a broken clock is right twice a day. But pretty much everything he did backfired in someway, even his supposed successes. As for him not talking as Springtrap but starting to as Scraptrap, a really good explanation I've seen is that he wasn't fully in control yet at the time of FNAF 3. He's just been freed from his safe room prison after 30 years, he probably wasn't doing too well. It's not a perfect explanation, but I think it's still a reasonable conclusion that many overlook. This one I will admit is kinda copium. As for Glitchtrap, I do agree that it had a lot of wasted potential for a really cool concept. I wish they did more with him, but what we did get was at least somewhat interesting. Burntrap still sucks though lol
That's all cope, trying to come up with a better story rather than what's there. The actual story - what little of it we get - has no indication of him being delusional about any of this past FNAF 3 (where his story should've ended). It's just really, really, really bad and he's a flawless supervillain. Watch him take over the Blob and become even more powerful.
I agree- though I don’t know how intentional any of it was. I know Cawthon initially wanted to end the series at Fnaf 3, and when fans were disappointed with the jump scare, he dug himself a hole with Fnaf 4, which got him ready to explain away even more things with SL and Fnaf 6 (my personal favorite ending if I ignore a lot of the book lore, though I think Fnaf 3 would have been the most satisfactory in terms of simplicity and mystery). I like the Idea of Afton going from normal to deranged in life after losing his family and failing his experiments, and sinking even further into his delusions once he dies. It seemed like a fitting evolution as we saw the Funtime animatronics and Cassidy go through something similar by getting lost to their anger, fear, and restlessness. What I don’t like is Afton actually being some kind of scientist, tbh. I didn’t mind him being more explored past being a random serial killer (especially if most of the games include Michael as the protagonist with some need for insight), and I like the premise that he killed Charlie out of grief for his own kids and that started his murder spree with the rest. But the whole ‘transferring his consciousness into a random chip on the robot (?) for some reason’ just felt overly complicated- which says a lot in the Fnaf series. I don’t even hate Glitchtrap in a bubble (actually seeing what William might have looked like while luring away kids is very intriguing) it just doesn’t make sense when you cram it into the rest of the lore. While I understand not wanting to make a game that juts reveals all of the crimes (the 8-bit mini games do enough imo)- it honestly feels like it might’ve just been better to keep the suit in a prequel or set up another universe and leave the original be. But then again, it’s far enough removed (being in a digital world and all), that I can just mentally separate it from the rest. Idk. So yeah. Mixed feelings on Glitchtrap. And as you said- I really hate Burntrap. He just undoes all of the progress made throughout the rest of the games to set the kids free and honestly looks like shit. He’s just some frail, relentless creature in a game that makes the lore even more dicey than it already was. And the worst thing about him, honestly, is that he doesn’t add anything new to Afton’s character. We see his dissent in the first seven games with Ultimate Custom night re-establishing him as a man so desperate to live and ignore his own failures that, even in his own personal hell, he’ll try to escape and blame everyone else around him instead of realizing why he’s there in the first place. Burntrap… is just that same guy, but without the satisfaction of actually putting him away and who is somehow successful with his bullshit ghost-science.
True and based, I rlly hope they do something with glitchtrap/vanny after whatever potential memes with the ruin dlc, burntrap/blob, or whatever else is lurking in the shadows. Feels like that whole concept introduced with vr/ar fell to the wayside as the scope and uniqueness of security breach grew over the course of development, feels very underutilized and would have been a great way to keep the concept of "the purple guy" around while leaving afton to his demons.
I see the Scraptrap (and by extension other animatronics) talking thing in 2 ways: 1) I personally believe that unless the soul has a lot of conviction, like Golden Freddy & the Puppet, their minds slowly degrade over time until they're more animalistic than anything else. Look at Chica in FNAF 1 and her raspy groans, Lefty's weakened whispers in UCN. The souls are forgetting, growing weaker over time. Afton could also be newly awakened in FNAF 3, and still getting accustomed to his new body. 2) It's possible that the only reason we can hear Afton's voice in Pizza Sim is because Mike is already dead. He may be a living corpse, but he is indeed dead. Without the same sort of tether to our world, he can hear the voices from beyond as if they were still there. He's more attuned to their ways. You can't say the same about the Funtimes because they're just intelligent robots with psychopathic personalities. Even a normal person could hear them, just like Henry did when he cut Baby off at the end of the game.
So as someone who's been writing a lot of fnaf stuff for years now, William was such a good character. When I entered the fandom he seemed the perfect villain. Sister Location had just dropped and I'd never read the books, so my read was this incredibly complex character. He murdered a ton of kids, but he was also decent enough to warn his own kid to stay away, and his groaning cries being interpreted as cries for help? He didn't really have a clear goal, or a clear motivation, his moral compass seemed like a bit of a roulette wheel. And as someone fixated on redemption arcs I had a field day trying to figure out just how far in either direction his character could realistically be pushed. Then I read the books, and pizzeria simulator came out. I love Afton's voice as is, but the writing is off. I also wasn't too fond of glitchtrap initially since the idea was a bit weird (also still think malhare is a much better name) but the end sequence when he's just silently dancing around? Great bit of character development. And now he's just fnaf's very own mary sue. I was so ready for Vanny. She seemed like she'd play both sides, like part of the game would be figuring out whether she was safe to talk to at any given time. But nah, she hardly shows up and here comes peepaw to yell about you dang kids on his pizzeria lawn again. Side not about UCN, I've always had the idea that you're technically playing as both Afton senior and junior. Michael is at the menu screen, picking the poison, and William's the one in the office getting screamed at. Hence why Old man consequences is telling him to leave it all be, constantly sending robo-furries after your murder-dad isn't going to be a fulfilling afterlife.
That's a pretty neat way to interpret the whole UCN thing, I've never thought of that. Then again, UCN doesn't elicit a lot of thought aside from how to beat its challenges or, in my case, how to improve on the game with a fangame remaster that I'll never get around to making... but, for lore, it's always been a weird one. William picking his own punishment definitely doesn't make the most sense, unless he really is so deluded and overconfident that he thinks he could win. Which is literally an idea memed on all the time, and these are watered-down versions of, like, maybe 80-90 percent of the animatronics from the series (excluding World which.. oh, I do _not_ want to think about how that would be incorporated).
Now that you mention it, your last paragraph DOES make a lot of sense. This is my new take on UCN when it comes to the two Aftons and who’s where and whatnot.
I think the reason the Purple Guy was lost along the way is because Scott wanted to explore the human side of fnaf instead of the animatronic one, and so he came up with immortality as PP’s motivation and so on. A bad decision imo, since the initial focus of the series was on its furred mascots and not the random poor schmucks who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. With how things are at the moment, Afton will almost certainly come back, and it’ll be even worse than Peepaw, because Scott/Steel Wool just can’t seem to let go of him. Perhaps the sole portrayal of the character that has any potential left is the movie version that’ll be played by Matthew Lillard, but given that he signed a three movie deal with Blum House, he’ll come back just as his game counterpart, depending on what stories the movies will tell. Here’s hoping they’ll at least try to do him justice and differentiate him from the generic mad scientist…
I don’t know, I think the overwhelming negative reception to him in Security Breach will be a wakeup call for Steel Wool. We have yet to really see what they do with the feedback to SB as a whole besides patches, so I’m hopeful
I stopped being engaged with Purple guy the second they started making him a mad scientist who was one of the two owners to the company. It went from 'my co worker standing next to me could be a serial killer and I could be his next target' sorta paranoid feeling to... just being corporate america, to be exaggerative.
@@Thor-Orion it's less that I'm not aware of it, it's more that I find it depressing. Kinda like a disapointed parent but worse I guess? That's my two cents, at least.
@@M4x4r0ni well, corporate America is probably the most horrifying concept you could ever think of. Look at the DuPont chemical dumping and Union Carbide Corp’s dumping in West Virginia. Look at the East Palestine Ohio trail derailment. It’s just… endless amounts of destruction and disregard for people’s and the environment’s health, lives and very existence. Truly deplorable actions and policies. It’s not that I think most people don’t know about these things, but it’s our responsibility to at least attempt to lay the groundwork down to begin fixing the mess we’ve been left with.
I think the problem with the bones is that they are pure white, which causes them to pop out. For how long he’s been in that suit, his bones should have probably been a dark brown, which would also match the other colors of this design, further emphasizing the day of this character.
The part that bugs me about scraptrap is that the exposed bone would've been a really cool addition to his design, but idk why his skull is sized up to make him more cartoonish
Scott had already admitted even before FFPS that he's never been good at designing human characters. Probably why he's so good at designing the animatronics (even in FNaF4 the models were extremely detailed, and all the rips and holes were individually made). I mean...this *is* the same person who made Globgogabgolab. I'm not kidding.
@@myst1que_mach1neI looked it up, looked at the channel. Holy shit, you're right. I knew Scott made The Pilgrim's Progress, so when I saw the trailer...I fucking flipped. What the fuck. I have to live and die with this knowledge.
The thing is that William Afton himself never needed to physically “come back”, it could have just been different people inspired by him, or following a similar line of thought to him. In the Batman: Arkham series, the main thing tying the games together story wise was the “Spirit of Arkham”, which was named after Amadeus Arkham, a man who opened up an asylum but slowly went insane himself, believing all criminals should be exterminated, and his ideas, whether being directly taken from him or others coming to convergent conclusions, made up the main villain’s motives of the Arkham Games. As stated I believe a similar concept could have worked with fnaf, in this case being the “Spirit of Afton”, which would be defined by people inpired by Afton and actively want to “continue his work”, or just people who have his same goals. Example could be Vanessa/Vanny. She simply could have been another bunny themed serial killer who chooses a Fazbear location as their main hunting ground in a possible homage to her idol, William Afton, who probably would have been remembered as a high profile serial killer that Netflix probably made a series about by that point.
I agree with you. For now, I'm just headcannoning Jeremy to have been influenced by Glitchtrap to try to become another Springtrap and Vanny was supposed to act as Burntrap/Jeremy's helper of sorts
And they can remove the whole remant thing since only a few people , most killed in the fnaf 6 fire, would know about remant to everyone else he's just some psycho, only problem is that fazbear entertainment is convincing people that the murders never happened
I was in love with the idea of The Cult of Afton, people who "made" the AR game being nabbed by animatronics and being indoctrinated with the Glitchtrap virus. The initiation ritual? Kill a kid while wearing a bunny mask. Which is why Vanny is at the Pizzaplex, she's pursuing her "chosen" child aka Gregory because he escaped her. To help her in the task, she uploads the Glitchtrap virus, which rapidly takes over the animatronics (bar Freddy being in "safe" mode due to maintenance) binding them to her control so they can assist with the calture/murder of Gregory.
Willian Afton, as they say, got did dirty. He's the villain, he always comes back. Even when he's supposed to be long gone, and when he's an active hinderance to story growth. Especially with the change in direction the series took from supernatural to sci-fi, him no longer being a main villain makes sense. But he just keeps getting dragged around and had become far more of a joke than a serious threat at this point. Which is sad, because he used to be kinda cool. There's another villian in another series who I find similar to how you described Afton at the end, going from a mystery to be big man behind everything. Dr Yado from Lisa: The Painful. In the Painful, he was a very strange, mysterious character. He wore orange and green polka dots and would always show up following Brad, the main character, just off in the distance playing his trumpet and looking down at you when happen to notice him. There's a Patreon-backed area, a giant abandoned hotel, one of the big features is a very strange orange and green polka dotted room filled with mutants seemingly worshipping a trumpet. In Joyful, the next game, it is revealed that he is behind basically everything, even apparently the birth of the protagonist of Joyful. He's the final boss, and acts in a prideful, god-complex like way Afton came to.
For Glamrock Bonnie becoming Burntrap, there's a lot more behind it than you'd think. The claws on Burntrap confirm that it was either a Bonnie or Monty endo that made him, since they're the only ones that have them, needing to pluck the heavier strings on the bass. It also works thematically, since Bonnie was the suit he committed his murders in.
True, but there's really no story relevance currently in game, and that would mean the only piece of evidence can only be found by studying the models. And since the Security Breach model viewer was cut, that's not realistically possible.
I think the newest iteration of Afton COULD be terrifying again, IF he is handled in a more thoughtful way. For example, have Afton be dead and the glitchtrap be the worst parts of him unleashed with no restraint. When alive, Afton had care and caution with his killings, not taking too many lives at one time or in one place and then becoming your 'average hardworking dad' when out of the suit. BUT glitchtrap is his darkest deeds, intentions and killer instinct let loose. No restraint, no caution, no fear. All Afton's intelligence without the humanity to keep him from a killing spree, just a calculating killer repeating the actions that ended up getting him killed. A springtrap with even more creep factor and all the intimidation from fnaf 3 and more. If only...
I wonder if Scott made him say “I ALWAYS come back” to let us know he will be in basically EVERY following game in some way shape or form even if it doesn’t need him.
4:21 As long as the suits are properly maintained, they are actually not that dangerous and it is pretty hard to set off the springlocks. that's why Afton died because the suit he used was old and rotting and was probably very nasty and dirty.
And because he did all of the "don'ts" that trigger the spring locks. Erratic movement and moisture. He was putting the suit on frantically in his fear of the ghosts and its widely accepted that he laughed his evil ass off in overconfidence once he had it on. The suit was also triggered by moisture. Whether that moisture came from the damp setting he was in, the supposed sweat coming off of his body given the situation, or even the moisture from his breaths and laughs. Maybe all of the above. But once he started bleeding into the suit, that was it.
I feel like Glitchtrap could have easily replaced "Peepaw Afton" in Security Breach if they were that set on having Afton be the big bad. If they had fleshed out their plans with the Princess Quest arcade games, and even the Balloon World game in the Daycare Attendant's room, it would have provided the perfect place for him to work from the shadows and hold influence over Vanessa/Vanny and possibly the animatronics. While they could still have the encounter with Burntrap in the game, having the glitches in the arcade cabinets be a key to a true ending would create a better buildup leading to that encounter where Afton has to have a "fine, I'll do it myself" moment caused by him no longer having that control.
It's interesting that fire is always used to try and destroy the animatronics and free the souls trapped in it, but somehow it never works. William afton has now been burnt a total of 3 times and still manages to survive, and the blob of animatronics we see in security breach is still alive and kicking. Lore wise, it does kind of make sense since the animatronic can be melted down as remnant to be reused, hence maybe why burning the animatronics never worked
Afton originally had much more of a looming presence in Security Breach that would’ve given Burntrap some actual *buildup* - Vanessa’s cut voicelines where she’s clearly talking to Glitchtrap (immediately sets up this shadowy mastermind controlling Vanny) - The original plot where Vanessa and Gregory worked *together* to beat Glitchtrap, thereby just leaving Afton’s physical body (Burntrap)
The Afton video's out, and it's yet another fantastic character summary! To be a little fair to Glitchtrap, even though his plotline didn't exactly pan out in the best way (Vanny got SO screwed over in so many ways), I don't think this franchise will ever provide me with a moment as jarring and uncomfortable as when I first saw Glitchtrap in FNAF VR. Good christ, they NAILED his design. Never before have I seen a character so perfectly capture my lifelong fear of mascot costumes in physical form. He's just so... fake and predatory in his body language, made especially clear when he waves to you from halfway across the party room in the menu. Although the outfit's eyes are dead and static, the eyes of whoever's inside that thing are unquestionably, indisputably fixated on YOU. The type of horror that gets to me the most is the kind that makes you feel like you're being stalked, and being in the position of one if the missing children (probably Gabriel) in the Pizza Party minigame was just... ugghh. So so gross. All that said, keep up the good work! These character summaries are great for really zeroing in on individual characters and what makes them so iconic :D
I literally just told myself "I have been procrastinating for an hour and a half on UA-cam, I need to get back to studying now." And I just saw this in my notifications...well guess who's procrastinating for another half hour!
William Afton as Springtrap in FNAF3 should have been the last we saw of him. The fact he’s a rotting corpse with a spirit of nothing but pure rage is something terrifying. It’s not a victim, but the perpetrator himself. The man behind the events of 1 and 2, and he could have been just an average Joe, he didn’t need all that backstory stuffed onto him in later games. Similar to Michael Myers, the less we know about him, the more scary it is. I always thought FNAF3 was highly underrated. Some things are just better when kept simple.
There actually is mention of his crimes in SB. In one of the duffle bags, an email titled "It is happening again" has a parent complain about Fazbear Entertainment reopening, despite the fact that countless children were murdered at their establishments. Other than that, great video! One of the few I actually agree with when it comes to criticizing William Afton's degradation throughout the series.
I don't understand Burntrap as a concept. If Glitchtrap has the power to possess people, then he certainly can posess machines as well, because brains should be harder to hack into than hardware. So why is William Afton's new body made up of his old body? That skeleton has been burned twice so far, and William probably hated being inside Springtrap in the first place because of the restricted movement and pain it inflicts on him. Why didn't Vanny just decommission Bonnie for Glitchtrap to possess? Using a new and completely functional robot body seems easier than trying to bring a burnt corpse back to life,. Also, why does he have his arm back now??? Maybe Glitchtrap isn't exactly Afton; the virus could simply be mimicking him, like you said. Vanny does seem to have a distinct personality from Afton, despite being (supposedly) possessed by Glitchtrap. But if that's the case, Help Wanted and Security Breach needed to make the distinction between Glitchtrap and William Afton clearer, especially since the former is poorly explained overall.
Since Baby is so underused and weirdly handled as a villain, I thought it would be cool to see her be the main villain/final boss fight of security breach. We could see her taking up the torch of her father, or fighting to destroy everything he built out of that original sister location spite. We could also see her face plates open up on the jumpscares, which would be cool and freaky. Idk I feel like she’s underused as a villain and she has a lot of potential. Have WA be in the Princess quest game for sure, just make it his only appearance in the game. Sort of a “he’s always lurking in the shadows” type of deal.
Security Breach had such an interesting concept for villians. Animatronics that might have been victims too. Vanessa in a bid to protect Gregory accidentally puts him in more danger Hell I think the animatronics as alleys would have been intriguing too. Them having "safe" times where they try help Gregory. Not realizing the danger when they switch
I would have loved this, or at least an option to save them from the Glitchtrap virus. Like maybe hard resetting them or forcing them into "safe" mode like Freddy. Like it just felt like a waste to destroy them, and an out of the blue decision anyway.
I feel like it'd be interesting if Afton coming back had some genuinely meaningful impact. Like what if him repeatedly coming back from the dead allowed something... *else* to follow him? Maybe there are certain things in the afterlife that were meant to stay there, and Afton's meddling unintentionally let something loose he never intended? I think that'd be a cool setup for a new game with a new villain that ties directly back to the older games in a pretty meaningful way
Pizzeria Simulator Afton: “I knew it was a deception the moment I heard it, obviously. But intriguing nonetheless.” Later when the Pizzeria burns along with him. Afton: *surprised Pikachu face*
I am so with you when it comes to the dialogue. I feel like everything with afton coming back over and over would have been much more easily taken in if they didn't have any full, easily understood dialogue for William. Imagine if the only lines we ever heard from him are his weird breathing in 3, the one line before his undeath in SL, the tortured screaming, and the creepy and distorted line from glitchtrap. I would have much preferred if his arc is supposed to be that he slowly is becoming less human over time, but with scott trying to make him less of a slasher villain and more of this "genius mad scientist", it doesn't work. I remember being so hyped when I first saw Springtrap, and by the time of pizzaria simulator, I didn't really care about him anymore. By the time of SB, I actually groaned when I saw him pop out at the end. They took my favorite character and made him into something I really didn't want to see anymore. What a shame.
Same. It was cool to hear his voice in SL, when he was alive, but it takes away Springtrap's fear factor. And if they really want him to talk we should hear the pain in his voice. He's a corpse suffering in a bunch of sharp metal, but it feels like he's completely fine.
It’s about time someone acknowledged William’s goofy ahh dialogue. I think the whole cheesy villain sort of demeanor carries over to Vanny in SB too, with the giggling and the “are you having fun yet?”
At this point; William Is now officially a joke and not In a good way and you can tell there just runnin' out of Ideas what to do with him anymore, except the fans demandin' more and more otherwise It wouldn't be FNAF without our main Purple Boy, over here!
I can't be the only one who thinks "See you in the sequel" when Afton "dies" or just loses. While I'm a FNAF fan since recently, I can see why people think Afton is a joke. He went from mysterious murderer, to dead murderer who refuses to die and clearly struggles, to a animatronic builder who can get a bit sci-fi-ish, to kinda ugly thing who tries to be edgy and smart but doesn't do it so good (and also seems to attempt to convince himself he doesn't hate being Springtrap), to being tortured in hell, then back to kinda decent Afton with Glitchtrap who is kinda unsettling and continues his murders, to pretty much The Bad Guy. I can Kinda see why people wanted FNAF to end on FNAF3 or FNAF 4.
9:25 is funny because before SL, Scott wanted people to consider the whole series was a child's misinterpretations and nightmares of experiences and things he saw and rumors he heard, so the "they stuff you in the suits" thing might've been from this very easter egg in-canon
I think that the Silver Eyes version of William is probably the best version, a jealous bitter man who saw what others had and wanted that but couldn’t and so in response he murdered children not only as a way to get back at people like Henry who had what he didn’t but as a twisted form of affection towards the children letting them live out their “happiest day” over and over completely uncaring of the suffering he was putting them through.
I still like the idea that Afton always comes back, it’s just that when he came back after FNAF 3, he didn’t really do anything, he just “dies” in the Pizzaria Simulator. And is presumably in purgatory held by his victims. He comes back again in the form of Glitchtrap, where Help Wanted and FNAF AR teases the existence of a growing cult of Afton. Only for Security Breach to completely fail at giving any kind of conclusion to what was an incredible premise.
Perfectly said, they messed up so much by practically abandoning what they were trying to establish for so long while we all waited for security breach, only for it to act like none of that ever happened.
It's disappointing because I loved william in fact I still do. He felt like a more modern and realistic take on a mad scientist to me personally and I love it. A man with no love for anyone not even his own family willing to do anything and hurt anyone to cheat death. It's just as the series went on he became more of fan service that no one wanted. Everytime they want to make a new villain like elizabeth or vanny, william gets thrown into the mix. If the series were to go back into william's prime as a killer or dave miller, I think it would make william great again.
I personally disagree, but that's just my opinion. I've seen so many stories with evil scientists who's main goal is to get some kind of superpower. It's not a bad trope, but it doesn't fit the theme of FNAF.
I think Afton could have had great potential to be a compelling antagonist if he was actually the man behind the otherwise nebulous but sinister 'management' of the Fazbear franchise, with Purple Guy/Springtrap just being an employee he'd exploited for his own purposes. A mad scientist obsessed with immortality also being the CEO of Fazbear Entertainment would have made it fairly natural to keep him around for future stories without having to deal with the limitations of Springtrap, and we could have still retained Springtrap as this mysterious slasher villain who might have a different agenda from his old boss.
My biggest issue with Afton is is complete lack of motivation. We can theorize all we want about what William's end goal was, if it was attaining immortality, saving his son, screwing over Henry, or just killing kids for the sake of it. He's not a mindless monster anymore, William is supposed to be an intelligent mastermind, yet we don't know what his plan is.
I perfectly agree with everything you say here. It’s so refreshing finally hearing someone criticize Scraptrap’s personality and dialogue for being so terrible. Can’t wait to see you tackle the other side of the coin (Cassidy) and all the problems there in a future video! 8D (Seriously tho Golden Freddy should’ve been only inhabited by Evan/Crying Child from the start. Makes a way better narrative.)
that's kind of contradictory though, fnaf 2 confirms 5 victims were killed whereas fnaf 4 shows the bite victim was introduced after ( even though canonically he died before Cassidy ). So if you did want only one soul to inhabit golden Freddy wouldn't Evan have to be the one cutout since he was only introduced 2 games after the 5th victim.
@@onlycows726 That's the way Scott chose to introduce these characters. What I'm referring to isn't a theory I believe in, just how I feel the lore should have gone. Obviously the story would change in this assumed version to imply Evan was Golden Freddy and never the fifth child.
"There is only one man who can keep coming back as the ultimate evil and constantly be reborn and still be cool" me: "And it's Ganondorf" "And William Afton is no Ganondorf" me: "Called it!" But seriously, I love watching your videos. Great work!
I think the series went too hard with the villainous mastermind scientist. I liked it how fnaf 3 made Springtrap seem less in control of himself, doomed to the same fate as the children were in the animationics. Also he shouldn’t have some evil plan. Yes he killed people but it was never for any grand plan or purpose, he seems to be more impulsive with how many mistakes he makes.
For me, when Springtrap first appeared I fell in love with the character. There’s nothing more interesting to me then watching as somebody’s plans completely fail. It’s the reason I love characters like Emperor Belos and Frollo. So seeing this child murder forced to go through the same pain as he put his victims through was absolutely satisfying. Due to this I’ve hated his random appearances ever since. In the books, the fact he was able to escape from the suit was extremely disappointing. Turns out this thing that was meant to be his prison, he’s suddenly able to get out. Minus his book appearance, his game’s appearances are even worse. What I hate about Scraptrap, is the fact that he can talk. The reason I love the concept that he says “Help me.” while in game 3 is that his vocal cords were probably destroyed in the springlock incident. Then he starts talking, and like you said, he sounds like an edge lord. The only redesign I liked of Afton with Glitchtrap. He’s silent and almost as malicious the exact same way as the original Springtrap was. I don’t want to get into Peepaw Afton. Should’ve just made Vanny the main villain, keeping William as a the behind the scenes puppet master. I thought the way they communicated in Help Wanted was amazing. As he keeps appearing, I can’t help but get more disappointed with each variation. Just let the man die and go to whatever hell awaits him. Like seriously, how does he keep escaping these hells that are practically perfect for his crimes?
OMG THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT BURNTRAP'S DESIGN!! I know that a lot of people complain about Scraptrap's design being bad, but I don't see a lot of people complaining about Burntrap's design, quite the opposite really and I just don't get why. Besides the story problems that Burntrap brings, his designs has a lot of problems too. Like they try too hard on making him look spooky and edgy but it just makes him look weak, especially with the way he walks. Not to mention his jaw just feels way too out of place, like why does he have his jaw but not the rest of his flesh body?? Honestly, not only is Glitchtrap my favorite design out of all the fnaf characters but he's also one of my favorite versions of William Afton. I was so disappointed to not see or mention him at all in sb but then to be replaced by Burntrap, who has all the worst qualities of Springtrap and Scraptrap's design combined, is the most disrespect to Afton's potential as Glitchtrap ever.
I didn't go into it, but my theory is that Burntrap was a sort of sudden-onset decision. XD Like, maybe something else was planned that had to be changed, so they turned him into a progressed Scraptrap... sorta.
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 He might've or his design stayed the same the entire time, honestly it's hard to tell where steelwool decided that idea for themselves or they just didn't have enough time. Especially considering they thought it was a good idea to not have any save stations after 6 am. Either way, it wasn't a good decision because his design and overall appearance was lack luster. The Bonnie theory you mentioned was a wasted opportunity in my opinion. Afton using Glamrock Bonnie could've created such easy tension between Freddy and Afton. Freddy tries to attack Afton but he can't because it's Bonnie, his best friend, which leads him getting hacked and being controlled by Afton. So instead of Bonnie being mentioned out of nowhere, Bonnie being mentioned could've been an easy way to set up hacked or evil Freddy. Honesty Monty decommissioning Bonnie because Monty was hacked by Vanny is so much better than Monty decommissioning Bonnie because Monty had a big ego and he was jealous and it had NOTHING to do with the Glichtrap virus at all.
Burntrap doesn't even have a bad casing, either. His casing is, pretty much, Spring Bonnie - it's literally a model SteelWool made and didn't end up using for Help Wanted. The issue is that they just plopped the top of his head onto a gigantic flesh-head for some reason, loosely hung a few spare chunks of his torso and arms on, and called it a day. So he has the shape if you really, really compartmentalize, but he has none of that original silhouette nor does he have the overall shape down whatsoever. And the random flesh fingers feel just like some of the nonsense Scraptrap's model tried out. Also in mention to the replies, Monty's ego being so big is vaguely implied to be a part of the bugs presumably caused by the Glitchtrap issues the whole location is having, but.. not particularly elaborated on. That could easily have only given him the freedom to act on it, even, or just solely caused his blind raging he does, and it's impossible to say. The others are sometimes a bit more clear-cut - Chica, for instance, with her ravenous and endless eating, to the point of assaulting customers for their food and raiding the place's storerooms. Or Roxanne, getting her competitive nature cranked right up and thus causing her to wait endlessly for races to start at the closed track, or berate guests to make herself feel better. But Monty has basically no personality.
@@ultmateragnarok8376 Exactly, I honestly think that the design would've been better if they just kept Burntrap's upper teeth and have the rest of his jaw gone. Another thing, I feel like that his teeth is not dirty enough and the fact that he still has all of his teeth perfectly really bothers me, though that's probably just me being nitpicking. About the Monty thing, I really hope that's true. The reason why I'm worried about that's not being true is because of tales of the pizzaplex. I remember reading a thing about Moon in the tales of the pizzaplex, where apparently it was revealed that Sun/Moon was originally a theater animatronic that would transform into his other counterpart for show. Which is fine I can buy that, however it was also revealed that Moon was always evil from the start and that Fazbear entertainment decided to replace Sun for the daycare but was too lazy to reprogram Moon to be good, so they just leave the lights on in the daycare. Which is so incredibly stupid to me and again, it's not giving Vanny the credit she deserves. She should've been the reason why the animatronics were hacked, not because of 46 or that the animatronic was just always evil. Anyways yeah, I really hope that tales of the pizzaplex doesn't do Monty dirty like that and steelwool explore his character in future games rather than just being angry all the time.
@@isabelburnos980 Tales From The Pizzaplex is, like Fazbear Frights, non-canon to the games. The people writing them _say_ they're canon to the games, but they aren't the same people making the games and just because they have the brand name on them doesn't mean they're actually a part of the storyline. The theater animatronic thing for Moon wasn't an original concept - it's a fan concept, both in terms of the 'DCA subcommunity' having it as one of the ones bouncing around in there even before the book came out, being why it's in said book; and in terms of the books being essentially licensed fanfiction. The only book that could've been said to be canon to the game series was The Silver Eyes, and that one was explicitly stated not to be and still sort of is and sort of isn't in its weird middle-ground way that can't just be simple.
It's sad when this man has kid multiple kids, abused and indirectly killed his own, and is an overall terrible human being yet the mere sight of him these days is just met with a deep sigh and groan.
Glitchtrap to me is by far the scariest version of William. The beckoning toward the curtain, watching him dance around while you're stuck in the suit..such chilling and terrifying scenes. FNAF never scared me enough to keep me up at night (didn't really scare me much at all) but Glitchtrap is the thing I'd rather not remember when it's 4am and I can't sleep
I don't think most people will know what i am talking about, but how Afton is treated in FNAF is almost the same as Sigma was in Megaman X, both characters were cool, intimidating villains, them they started getting "upgraded", constantly revived and overshadowing other villains as the final boss, and both were turned into virus gods
Afton's story definitely should've ended with the fire. Its easily the most climactic end for someone like him. If they really wanted him to remain a villain, they could've went for like a cult like route with people worshipping him and committing more murders in honor of him
7:31 I don't think it's been ever confirmed, but my interpretation of the "I'm not the actual purple guy" line is a reference to Michael, who also gets properly introduced in Sister Location. The same game teased at the end of HU. Afton is always depicted purple in the minigames, but that's how he looks as a sprite. Not physically. Michael, however, physically turns purple as his body decomposes after Ennard scoops him. I'm not sure if this is what this line was teasing or if it's a coincidence or something Scott did in hindsight, but either way I think it's a cool way to overanalyze this line
Sprintrap is still the best design in the series, in my opinion... I wish they would have done more with Glitchtrap in SB, because I really like the idea and design behind him, specially the big black mess he is in Princess Quest. While I love the character, he really needs to be put on the shelf, even tho I kinda hope he comes back fused with the Blob and will look similar to the Princess Quest version...
Purple guy and "Glitchtrap" (Malhare still sounds better) act like horror villains, cold, direct, deadly, they play no games, they go for the kill. Whereas William Afton (as to say the Sister Location onward) is more of a sci-fi cartoon villain: arrogant, cocky and filled to the brim with hubris, the problem here is that it's just so cartoony, even down to the appearence: Lean and mean? Scraptrap's got that; british accent? You bet! Recurring villain that breaks the fourth wall? As if the catchprhase "I always come back" wasn't clear enough. We gotta remember that Scott prefers sci-fi, friendly tycoon games and RPGs, that's what his whole cathalog was before FNaF.
For so long I have wanted to make a video about what you mentioned about the FNaF 6 ending basically being completely destroyed and retconed. I think Henry's speech is one of if not my favorite gaming moments of all time. It is so powerful. And him ending the series as he began, with William is amazing. He is his personal guide to the afterlife. I like William. I think he's amazing. And you know, I am happy to get him back. But the way we did... It just made his image so much worse. I miss the original serial killer Springtrap. One who was trapped in a suit just like his victims and coming to the same fate. A horrible accident. One he can't escape from. Awesome video! Always love to see your uploads! I definitely agree with all your stuffs. We should colab sometime! :)
I have to say, out of every iteration of Afton present throughout Fnaf's life, Glitchtrap has got to be my favorite. Yeah, his introduction may have not been the best when compared to others in the series, but the lore revolving around him was still something to make him stand out from the rest of the cast in that game. Even though he can be considered a God by fans, I personally believe that a digital form of Afton with the capability of mind washing people into doing his bidding could've opened up a world of possibilities. Unfortunately, what became of him in later entries, such as in Security Breach, didn't paint him in a good light. And at the rate in which the series is going, it may be a while until we get a game in which utilities something different and not so constrained to continue the story of a once menacing presence. Alright, I've honestly ran out of things to say, so yeah, peace out.
Afton would be way more effective as a past villain than a present one. Leaving the demon to his demons would allow the series to focus much more on the damage he caused than the spooky murder robot zombie he is. Maybe shifting the focus to Baby, Mike, Glitchtrap, Vanny, and Fazbear Entertainment as it exists in the present of the series, instead of bringing Willie back for no reason, could lead to some more creative gameplay mechanics.
Not gonna lie, I _legit_ clicked on this video thinking it said: "Afton's _Card_ Decline" I thought it was gonna be one of those meme videos... aww... : (
Turning the purple guy from a faceless serial killer in the shadows to a full on super villain was a mistake. I liked how grounded in realism the villain of the first 3 was when he was just some murderer only that his victims just came back as vengeful spirits instead.
My biggest problem with William is that he doesn’t even feel like a character anymore. just a Mcguffin to move the plot forward . his motives keep changing because he’s just an empty husk to throw in evil traits to make him look threatening. Like how in the newest story called “dittophobia” Fnaf 4 was all just William’s fear gas and he was kidnapping people to experiment on them. He’s the scarecrow at this point. That story was the stupidest thing I ever read i don’t even want to remember it exists.
William is downright evil while Ganondorf (for example) evolved and become kind of nice in Wind Waker. William is too one-sided in my opinion, yes we know that he is evil, but outside of Elizabeth's lines, he was never seen with his family. Perhaps showing how he refused that Elizabeth goes to Circus Baby would be important.
William's physical appearance should've stopped at fnaf6 like it was intended. I feel like if fnaf were to continue under Steel Wool it wouldn't be a terrible idea to have characters continue his legacy since in real life some serial killers are inspired by previous ones (which I feel like could've worked for Vanny's case from her being under his influence), and glitchtrap could've just been a separate character but created after his image. I feel like especially making Vanny his successor in this case was underplayed a lot due to how irresponsible Steel Wool went with William's character. If they never included him **physically** that could've given Vanny/Vanessa the chance to shine as this new antagonist in this new Era of fnaf, but nooooope.
A weird theory that me and my friends have come up with recently, is that Afton is literally regrowing his flesh and using remnant to do it. (which kinda explains his differing designs in-between games but maybe im just looking for a reason for it) Which is probably why the Pizzaplex has more deaths than any other pizzarea before it. (all the staff... a handfull of missing children) and why he's in a sealed charging station. He's literally regrowing himself, and he wasn't done cooking by the time Gregory came down there.
This would actually make sense. Especially because they say that’s what happened to Michael when Ennard left him. The remnant healed him. So if anything we should have been expecting William to start “regenerating” after everytime Vanny would feed remnant into the power station etc…
Scott confirmed that the idea he had for Burntrap wasn't him being a boss or even a physical character. He was supposed to be some kind of hallucination or illusion that would appear in some areas standing still staring at the player but cannot kill them. This didn't happen due to a severe lack of communication between Scott and Steel Wool during development Also its commonly accepted now by fans that Burntrap (and Glitchtrap) isn't William but the Mimic
Afton is overused to the point where he isn't scary or intimidating anymore, he seems more like a returning villain in a cartoon than a legitimate threat. In FNAF 2 he was perfect. The simple "you can't" in response to "save them" is intimidating, scary and evil as fuck. Sadly now, we just know too much about him and why he killed the children, making him appear way less of a threat
I like that. I dont understand this weird obsession with portraying child serial killers like nigh omnipotent unstoppable threats like they want to be seen. Prefer to dee him being clowned on.
i think one of the things i dislike the most about afton always being prioritized over other character is that we never get to learn about any of his victims-- who should be the ACTUAL main characters over him. charlie is really the only one we ever spent enough time with to get a grasp of her character, and any others that got details about them revealed (susie, cassidy, and sort of the crying child) were still just BARELY given anything at all. i mean cassidy gets, what, three lines and an ending in ucn and susie gets a mini game and a fazbear frights story, meanwhile afton gets all that and a bag of fries? not to mention how his hogging of the spotlight effects the characters we actually play as. it was fine for the first few games, but when they started giving us more complex characters as the protagonist and still didn't give them much it just got really frustrating. i love michael, the crying child, and gregory, but the latter two are still heavily undervalued in comparison to their father (ESPECIALLY the crying child, which STILL makes me upset bc he's been one of my favorites since fnaf 4 came out), and gregory's backstory was so underdeveloped that no one's sure what his deal actually is after a year of the game being out. sigh... maybe ruin will let us have a character who isn't afton get some significant development, but i am a bit hesitant to get my hopes up. i'd love to learn more about the little girl we play as, especially since we've only ever gotten to play as a female character once before. i'd love for her to join the weird little girl squad of charlie, susie, elizabeth, and cassidy... they can be a quintet :)
"Look, there's only one man who can keep coming back as the ultimate evil, and constantly be reborn, and still be cool And William Afton..... is no Ganondorf" That made me laugh so much, yes! Ganondorf does Afton's shtick so much better! Respect my guy! o7
i think the reason i like the first three games more than others is that they seem…at least a bit more real than the others. i definitely believe that in our universe, a man could kill kids and stuff their bodies into corpses. and while i know it cant actually happen, i’ll buy haunted suits more than i’ll buy remnant, mad scientists, a bunch of dead kids, melted corpses, time traveling ball pits, etc. i think the later games have extensive and interesting lore, but when it comes to fear, i think simplicity is the way to go.
To me, GlitchTrap making Jeremy cut his own face off kind of fits. It's like in a superhero movie when someone gets their powers for the first time and is trying them out. Like an "Alright, lets see what I'm capable of." type of thing, but instead of some dude flying around lifting heavy things, it's a psychopathic, manipulative child serial killer from ~40 years ago who has now been given immense power and control over people and electronics. Fascinating...
27:00 About this point do you think Scott elaborated more on who purple guy is because of fans wanting to put an identity on the character? William Afton is a terrible father no doubt about that and something I’ve always noticed though not always bothered by is people’s need to give William a motivation. Like Cc (crying child ) and Elizabeth’s death as something that sets him off. I find it interesting that even though people still make William out to be this ruthless evil cold hearted monster who just won’t die there has to be reasonings as why he started killing children. Like he can't just be a serial killer like ther eneeds to be something more. I think Sister Location handled it's idea well. William got a name and some lore but you don't truly know or see him. You still have to speculate the details. It's detached to be more sci-fi and explain the working of how posession works. However it was supposed to be seperate but we know how that went. The Purple guy has lost so much of his horror because we know so much and there is so much focus on him. I think something that could have worked to keep his cold hearted nature is to have more focus on the VICTIMS than the killers. Like in the fruity maze game where Susie's story is told or Cassidy's anger. The Afton children themselves would work into perheaps getting a peak into their heads to understand how they would view their own father. Michael in Sister Location honestly doesn't look as misreable as people make him out to be? Like he seems happy and social given how the neighbors seem friendly? Elizabeth I never really cared about but something I can't understand is her willingness to HELP William? Elizabeth might not actually know about the murders her father committed. Given how long she has been trapped she might have been also manupliated by Baby into thinking that her getting scooped was malfuctioned. Elizabeth seems to be the one present in Scrap Baby but the way she talks make it seems like she's willing to help her father kill? In fnaf VR there is ending where glitchtrap lures the player away and stuff them into a suit where you are trapped implied to be a missing child watching as your murderer jumps and dances all happy and smiles. That is something that would be genuinely horrifying. I imagined this is how the missing kids felt. Guess my little tangent is summed up in: Instead of focusing on William himself focus on the horrors he inflicted on his Victims and stories from those around him and what they think of him. ( small note on 29:34 ouch. Crying Child always been my favourite even pre sister location. Now it's been hinted at Michael is appreantly the one having nightmares. My boy is getting sidelined in his own game-)
I just have no idea how Scrap Trap could even talk if all of his vocal chords would be decomposed, would be better if he just growled or grunted I do love Glitch Trap has a more of a gleefully psychopathic vibe
Glitchtrap did grow on me and the thought of his ghost or whatever absorbing into tapes and computers I could see happening and why it would seep into vannys mind like a hypnotic radio wave. The fact they didn't use that to it's potential after giving vanny a house arrest bracelet and told to stay away from Afton was so saddening . At the very least say like she was rebuilding his old suit buying pieces off the black market because a unhealthy obsession Not to bring him back but just because it would be so gross but cool for her to worship his literal corpse That would definetly make her seem crazy and under a virus control that makes her see other stuff

I never knew how much I needed to hear such a fully lucid and honest appraisal of Willy A's flaws as a fixture of the greater FNAF property until I watched this. I remember being as entranced as everyone else when the story was first unfolding and we didn't even know this monster's name yet. At this point he's become a case study in how to hyperextend your Big Bad til it's just a punchline. In another context I might call this a savage takedown but it's really not - the series' treatment of Afton is its own savage takedown, but you inspected the wreckage and vocalized it in its entirety with an impeccable flourish. Bravo.
Imo he should never have had a name or a voice... It's so much creepier when we don't fully understand the killer. You can keep the fact that he has a son trying to save the souls of his victims, but Afton shouldn't have been a main character like Michael. He should only have been referred to as "father" and never speak, it could have been cool character development for Michael to constantly ask "why did you do this" and never get an answer.
Even though I love his voice.. it would’ve been pretty cool to keep him silent. Especially if mike were to ask him why he did what he did, and gets no answer. Just chilling. But tbh, I’m okay they expanded on Will. It’s pretty interesting too. And I do feel like he’s kinda in the backseat. I mean yeah he comes back but.. he doesn’t do much imo. But at the same time, with looking at SB now and even HW. He should’ve just stayed in hell lol. But honestly your view on this is pretty good. And I wouldn’t have minded it too much.
@@soomi5667 yeah, it’s a pretty cool concept for sure, but so much of the lore of this series is based around the Afton family, so it would be hard to fill that void if they never expanded upon William.
@@Thor-Orion Yeah, i won’t doubt that it’s surrounded by the aftons. Depending on how you look at it. Can be a bad thing because you want there to be a focus on the dead children, or a good thing if you like the focus on the killers family. I do wonder if there was a way to balance the two out.
@@Thor-Orion You have a point LOL. I do wish the focus on them was better myself. And yeah poor C.C doesnt have a name still 😭 I kinda blame this on how the games tell its story but... I’m sure it could’ve done it better. In the past, it’s tried to do so. So it definitely is something worth critiquing.
I whole heartedly agree on Vanny, I’ve came to about the same conclusion myself a while ago. On making the Purple Man and William Afton different characters, I kinda like that idea, again would have been better than what we got.
I think both are excellent ideas! Imagine if there was no Henry and "Dave" and "Will" were actually the ones who opened Freddy's, and it was through Dave's murder spree that Will discovered remnant. Perhaps he looses a child to Dave and becomes obsessed with this idea of bringing her and others back. There you have two distinct villains of different flavors.
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 Honestly, if we had to keep the mad science angle, that would be one way to do it. Henry could still exist of course, just have him unaware of Purple Guy's existence. I actually do like his relationship with William + the other Aftons, and their rivalry could push the narrative further so there would be more games w/o the convolution. Another hot take, now that I've mentioned the Emilys again: Marionette should've stayed haunted by the spirit of an unknown child bc Charlie deserved better and to be the main character before Michael shows up. Now *that's* a team up I'm dying to see! Just imagine... two children of embittered rivals, coming together to put an end to the madness and all of the tragedy.

William Afton has literally become 'How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?!' personified.
Hey, if we get more memes of it, I am fine with it
So whenever horror icon like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, or Jason Voorhes returns.
A cockroach has an iron will to live and is built to last, doesn't mean people want them around for long@@jhtoxic7870
His first actual physical appearance in springtrap is still the best look he’s ever had. Truly that design was badass and his other designs just haven’t come close to its perfection. Like the fact in fnaf 3 we would see William try to rip off the suit and you see his mutilated corpse inside the suit was very scary.
100%. He was so great as Springtrap.

@@Delta_2209What’re you, trying to apply real logic to Fnaf?! /light hearted
Staging it as a tragic play, "Bittersweet, but fitting."
Glamrock Freddy also acts a lot more like William than Burntrap does to Gregory. He also claims that his soul used to be down there. Which means it comes from the Blob (which is unlikely. considering the heads) or Burntrap.

@@jasontoddler7680your what on them-
I enjoy afton's dialogue.
Very well said.

I really think what would have way more compelling than mad scientist immortal robot corpse who becomes a virus that infects a beta tester
actually i like the idea of how he survived to fnaf 3 (he was underused tbh) but is ending in fnaf 6 was just perfect. He is a Bad Joke now
The current form of Afton is a consequence of fnaf becoming a franchise, never ending, always having to keep going, always having to come back and be explained. Mystery made the purple guy but the mystery isn't really there any more
Which is part of the problem, because the story is still written in a vague way to support the mystery.😭
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 You were right about the issue of escalation, Afton just couldn't escape transforming from the vaguely implied instigator of a haunting to the central driving force/antagonist of a sci fi mythology lmao
Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and change Scraptrap to save his character 😭
Here are some lines which I think best suggest that William is the one you play as:
(Nightmare Fredbear) 'This time, there's more than an illusion to fear': References the idea of the nightmares being the product of illusion discs, something only William would know about.
The one, who he shouldn't have killed is implied to be Cassidy
I agree, very cool describing the difference between Cassidy and Charlotte
I see the Scraptrap (and by extension other animatronics) talking thing in 2 ways:
1) I personally believe that unless the soul has a lot of conviction, like Golden Freddy & the Puppet, their minds slowly degrade over time until they're more animalistic than anything else.
@@ExValeFor Agreed. His story should have ended at 3.
Giving Purple guy a motivation is not a bad thing to flash out the character. The mad scientist idea is the problem.

William: "Ugh... I always come back."
Scott/Steel Wool: "YAAAY!"
The glitch trap virus
@@BrightWulph The Cult of Afton would have been cool, they should have went with that lol
And now with ruin that has been discarded
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 plus, the claws aren’t the ones Monty or Glamrock bonnie has. He has the claws that the nightmare animatronics have.
The fact that you upload decently long and well scripted videos every 4 days is so fuckin impressive! Kudos to you!
Thank you!
If only...
Or, JUST MOVE ON FROM HIM
I wonder if Scott made him say “I ALWAYS come back” to let us know he will be in basically EVERY following game in some way shape or form even if it doesn’t need him.
I'm so mad at how they shafted Vanny. I was so ready for a yandere copycat killer in a fursuit and we barely see her
Afton originally had much more of a looming presence in Security Breach that would’ve given Burntrap some actual *buildup*
- Vanessa’s cut voicelines where she’s clearly talking to Glitchtrap (immediately sets up this shadowy mastermind controlling Vanny)
- The original plot where Vanessa and Gregory worked *together* to beat Glitchtrap, thereby just leaving Afton’s physical body (Burntrap)
Thank you! 8D And I totally agree. Glitchtrap had a timeless creepiness that I think Fnaf really could benefit from.
I literally just told myself "I have been procrastinating for an hour and a half on UA-cam, I need to get back to studying now."
And I just saw this in my notifications...well guess who's procrastinating for another half hour!
We could've avoided all of this if only Scott had simply made some good jumpscares for FNAF 3...
I will gladly vouch for more valuable wabbit waifu time
Omg it’s the ooftroop 😳
I agree
Since Baby is so underused and weirdly handled as a villain, I thought it would be cool to see her be the main villain/final boss fight of security breach. We could see her taking up the torch of her father, or fighting to destroy everything he built out of that original sister location spite. We could also see her face plates open up on the jumpscares, which would be cool and freaky. Idk I feel like she’s underused as a villain and she has a lot of potential. Have WA be in the Princess quest game for sure, just make it his only appearance in the game. Sort of a “he’s always lurking in the shadows” type of deal.
Loving the slowed down Dave's theme in the background, like Dave's waiting for a cameo.
"I am the best version of the Purple Guy, Old Sport."
Security Breach had such an interesting concept for villians. Animatronics that might have been victims too. Vanessa in a bid to protect Gregory accidentally puts him in more danger
Hell I think the animatronics as alleys would have been intriguing too. Them having "safe" times where they try help
Gregory. Not realizing the danger when they switch
*Allies 👍
I would have loved this, or at least an option to save them from the Glitchtrap virus. Like maybe hard resetting them or forcing them into "safe" mode like Freddy. Like it just felt like a waste to destroy them, and an out of the blue decision anyway.
I feel like it'd be interesting if Afton coming back had some genuinely meaningful impact. Like what if him repeatedly coming back from the dead allowed something... *else* to follow him? Maybe there are certain things in the afterlife that were meant to stay there, and Afton's meddling unintentionally let something loose he never intended? I think that'd be a cool setup for a new game with a new villain that ties directly back to the older games in a pretty meaningful way
The line "he hopped outa of hell real fast" caught me offguard, that was hilarious for how true it is...
Pizzeria Simulator
Afton: “I knew it was a deception the moment I heard it, obviously. But intriguing nonetheless.”
Later when the Pizzeria burns along with him.
He's a corpse suffering in a bunch of sharp metal, but it feels like he's completely fine.
nah
It’s about time someone acknowledged William’s goofy ahh dialogue. I think the whole cheesy villain sort of demeanor carries over to Vanny in SB too, with the giggling and the “are you having fun yet?”
At this point; William Is now officially a joke and not In a good way and you can tell there just runnin' out of Ideas what to do with him anymore, except the fans demandin' more and more otherwise It wouldn't be FNAF without our main Purple Boy, over here!
Based and joke pilled.
You’re the only person who talks about this series from a logical standpoint I swear
The rise and fall of William Afton: No
The DECLINE and fall of William Afton: YES
I remember when the whole story was just a man who killed kids.. now it's all complicated..
“Afton is no Ganondorf.”
My favorite thing you have ever said.
“Wabbit Waifu”
A close second.
@@redpanda6497 yeah you're right, maybe i think differently because i was introduced to the series during sister location
@@youdontneedtoknow3025 Nah you are absolutely right
I love your FNAF videos! They are so interesting to hear and very fun! Heck it’s better than hearing my science teacher explaining stuff.
"Look, William, we can't be friends if we don't spend much time together."
"Bu... But... I always come back..."
I perfectly agree with everything you say here. It’s so refreshing finally hearing someone criticize Scraptrap’s personality and dialogue for being so terrible. Can’t wait to see you tackle the other side of the coin (Cassidy) and all the problems there in a future video! 8D
(Seriously tho Golden Freddy should’ve been only inhabited by Evan/Crying Child from the start. Makes a way better narrative.)
Oh yeah, I will have a LOT to say on Golden Freddy. XD
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 I’m very excited for that video! (And also the second “fixing SB locations” video because the first one was so goooood)
that's kind of contradictory though, fnaf 2 confirms 5 victims were killed whereas fnaf 4 shows the bite victim was introduced after ( even though canonically he died before Cassidy ).
@@OutOfNameIdeas819 So there would be 4 kids
“Btw bud I don’t hate you just move” really got me
The movie made Afton great again.
I was not expecting him to be able to move that quickly in that suit.

"And William Afton is no Ganondorf"

But seriously, I love watching your videos. Great work!
Great minds think alike. XD Especially when it comes to the true King of Evil.
How is gandodorf coming back and losing over and over again look cool?
@@notrealnamenotatall2476 Agreed!
Exactly. He used to be more of an instigating threat but now he's practically an immortal slasher villian that has to tie into absolutely EVERYTHING.
“It really sounds like something trying to replicate his voice” (in reference to Glitchtrap)
If only we knew then what we knew now,,,
Purple guy and "Glitchtrap" (Malhare still sounds better) act like horror villains, cold, direct, deadly, they play no games, they go for the kill.
I am very glad you're redoing those text-to-speech vids. Thank you!
Not gonna lie, I _legit_ clicked on this video thinking it said:
"Afton's _Card_ Decline"
I thought it was gonna be one of those meme videos...
aww... : (
LOL 😭
Before, people complained that his forehead was too big. Now it looks like his skull collapsed.
That's actually a really interesting theory ya have there
Scott confirmed that the idea he had for Burntrap wasn't him being a boss or even a physical character. He was supposed to be some kind of hallucination or illusion that would appear in some areas standing still staring at the player but cannot kill them. This didn't happen due to a severe lack of communication between Scott and Steel Wool during development
Also its commonly accepted now by fans that Burntrap (and Glitchtrap) isn't William but the Mimic
He was better as an everyday psychopath who could’ve been anyone on the street. And then he became Jigsaw Frankenstein.
i think one of the things i dislike the most about afton always being prioritized over other character is that we never get to learn about any of his victims-- who should be the ACTUAL main characters over him. charlie is really the only one we ever spent enough time with to get a grasp of her character, and any others that got details about them revealed (susie, cassidy, and sort of the crying child) were still just BARELY given anything at all. i mean cassidy gets, what, three lines and an ending in ucn and susie gets a mini game and a fazbear frights story, meanwhile afton gets all that and a bag of fries?
not to mention how his hogging of the spotlight effects the characters we actually play as. it was fine for the first few games, but when they started giving us more complex characters as the protagonist and still didn't give them much it just got really frustrating. i love michael, the crying child, and gregory, but the latter two are still heavily undervalued in comparison to their father (ESPECIALLY the crying child, which STILL makes me upset bc he's been one of my favorites since fnaf 4 came out), and gregory's backstory was so underdeveloped that no one's sure what his deal actually is after a year of the game being out.
sigh... maybe ruin will let us have a character who isn't afton get some significant development, but i am a bit hesitant to get my hopes up. i'd love to learn more about the little girl we play as, especially since we've only ever gotten to play as a female character once before. i'd love for her to join the weird little girl squad of charlie, susie, elizabeth, and cassidy... they can be a quintet :)
"Look, there's only one man who can keep coming back as the ultimate evil, and constantly be reborn, and still be cool
And William Afton..... is no Ganondorf"
That made me laugh so much, yes!

About this point do you think Scott elaborated more on who purple guy is because of fans wanting to put an identity on the character?
Guess my little tangent is summed up in:
Instead of focusing on William himself focus on the horrors he inflicted on his Victims and stories from those around him and what they think of him.
( small note on 29:34 ouch. Crying Child always been my favourite even pre sister location. Now it's been hinted at Michael is appreantly the one having nightmares. My boy is getting sidelined in his own game-)
I just have no idea how Scrap Trap could even talk if all of his vocal chords would be decomposed, would be better if he just growled or grunted
I do love Glitch Trap has a more of a gleefully psychopathic vibe
William goes from a true horror to an attempt to be serious that turned into a laugh track
At the very least say like she was rebuilding his old suit buying pieces off the black market because a unhealthy obsession
Not to bring him back but just because it would be so gross but cool for her to worship his literal corpse
That would definetly make her seem crazy and under a virus control that makes her see other stuff
You're the best at making these videos! They come out every 4 days so we don't have to wait long, and I always stay to the end, unlike other channels. 😁😁😁😁😁
@@soomi5667 the thing is that even the victims in Afton’s own family don’t get the focus they deserve. Crying Child still has no canon name!
@@Thor-Orion You have a point LOL. I do wish the focus on them was better myself. And yeah poor C.C doesnt have a name still 😭
I kinda blame this on how the games tell its story but... I’m sure it could’ve done it better. In the past, it’s tried to do so. So it definitely is something worth critiquing.
Lord, it was so damn great listening to you describe OG Springtrap. Makes me reminisce on how badly he used to scare me back then.
“I wish it was just the first three games” is one of the coldest takes
