Push Reel Mowers: How to Sharpen, Scotts Classic 20 Inch, Sharpening Kit with Compound and Crank

In this video, I show you how to sharpen a push reel mower, the Scotts 20 inch push reel mower.
First use a piece of paper to test whether the cutting reel has proper contact with the cutting bar. Adjust the two screws on the right and left with small adjustments until the bar is touching the reel evenly, not too hard and not to soft, just like a pair of scissors. Then, you need to lay the mower on the ground, and remove the left wheel by removing the hub cap, the E ring, and the plastic wheel. There is a pinion gear that you also need to remove. The driver axle has a pawl, a small piece of metal which drives it. Make sure not to lose that paul and rotate it around to allow you to drive the wheel backwards. Place the parts in the wheel to avoid losing any items. The sharpening kit comes with a crank, sharpening compound and a brush. Place the crank on the driving axle and the pawl in such a way that it will allow you to drive it backwards. Then use the brush to apply sharpening compound along the length of the cutting reel. With crank, then spin the reel backwards to sharpen the bar and cutting reel. They suggest doing this for 8 minutes or until the rotation becomes easy. The sharpening compound uses abrasion and friction to sharpen the reel. Once you are done, wash away all the sharpening compound with a hose. Then apply WD 40 to the cutting surfaces to make it spin smoothly. Then replace everything in the original position. Rotate the pawl around, replace the pinion gear, the wheel, then the E ring and the hub cap. Test your mower manually with a piece of paper, to ensure that the reel cuts evenly across the entire length of the cutting bar.
