    Wow! As an engineer, I am geeking out on this video! ISO 9001 - all in-house manufacturing - high staff retention - even 3D printing of components - equals highest quality! Great to see how everyone speaks with pride about their quality and differentiation. Great job and great team! Must be comforting to see a build first hand before heading off across the Atlantic. Good to hear that all paperwork is approved. Fair winds!

      I was very impressed and yes it did give me confidence to step on a brand new boat and sail it across the ocean. ISO 9001 is hard to get and keep. So that says a lot.

    Absolutely incredible build. My fourth time watching. I WANT ONE! Thank you Tomas and crew, you build an amazing vessel. Thanks Craig for a further peek into this remarkable sailboat. I know what I’ll do with my lottery winnings. Cheers from the West Coast of Canada.

    WOW, just WOW. That is one impressive company from one end to the other! Pride exudes from every step in the process and the final product shows. You can tell every employee is proud of what they do. Such a rare thing these days. I can easily see why you are so impressed! Great video, those guys deserve every bit of recognition they receive.

      I’m seriously stating to think a semi custom boat like this, Maverick, Seawind or Balance is a better long term value. As an engineer I love how XQuisite makes everything accessible. I saw the Wynn’s having to recaulk their saloon windows, and acrylic crazes over time, can’t avoid it. I really want glass which rules out most production boats. This and the Maverick vlog gives me a lot to think about. They need to build an X4.5

    Very nice of them to take the time to give you such a in-depth interview and tour, especially considering your not a writer for some big sailing or boat magazine.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 років тому +11

      Yes. I think they like that I’m not a sailing magazine. Those reviews are always puff pieces to try and get the builder to buy advertising. If we don’t like a boat we say it. So people value an honest opinion.

I spent 35 years in commercial aviation where quality is a must, and after getting my degree in Marine Maintenance Technology it is a MUST to have a quality built boat if you want to be able to sleep on a long passage!! @@Bowmans-Woods ISO 9001 is a way of documenting all your processes and ensuring you follow your process. It doesn't create high quality as that is a function of the design. • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 років тому

      It seems like quality is job #1 with this builder and I am not sure you can say that for any of the mass production boats and I am sure most of the mass production boats are just as heavy (or more). I think their market is for "quality luxury cruising" and are not going after the performance customer as much. They say there are 3 things in a Cat. Comfort, Performance and Price, and you can have 2 of the 3. ha ha.

    Having an ISO9001 audited system in place gives peace of mind to potential buyers and current owners. It means the boats are built to a high standard. Becoming a ISO rated company is not an easy thing to do as every aspect of the build from design through to manufacturing has to be documented with best practice techniques adhered too. Good on Xquisite for achieving this it looks like a very professional operation.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 років тому +1

      Yes. I was exceedingly impressed with that, especially when I learned how hard it is and how they need to get audited yearly to keep that status. I believe you are getting a lot of quality and good "bang for the buck" with this builder.

    I just spent a little over an hour with Tamar at the 2020 Miami Boat Show. He gave me a very thorough tour of this boat. The level on attention to detail, in terms of design, craftsmanship, and overall build quality far exceeded my comprehension of where I thought modern cats are today. I looked at a lot of multihulls here at the boat show and the Xquisite was by far the best one.

    That was a great factory tour! I like their keeping workers year around, building boats, even if they don't have it sold yet. I like that they don't use brokers, like Tesla doesn't use dealers to sell their cars, and roll the savings back into the boat. Maybe you can do a video interview sometimes with the designer and he can talk more about the upgrades, and improvements he's made to the design since the original boat that Tamas bought and had to finish himself and ended up leading him to start the company?
    I'm a nerd about design and construction techniques. I must get it from my dad who was in quality control at Ford in Detroit and he'd come up with design improvements or faster/better ways to build something. He ended up at Ford Aerospace in California.

    Fantastic video showing WHY these boats are worth what they charge (and probably more!) All in-house workmanship. Accessibility to all the components. It seems every detail is thought out. I love their business model: Keep the guys working even without sales; make improvements as they are discovered; make those improvements backwards compatible for earlier boats in the line; quality over all else; no outside sales team; after sales service; the list goes on.
    Impressive. Or should I say "Xquisite"?!

I cannot wait to see how my impressions jibe with yours. One day I hope to get to the factory too. Great point about the electrical work. Pretty sure that was one of the key factors for Nigel Calder and the Sail Magazine folks to give the X5 boat of the year honors in 2017. I have been under the hood of every catamaran in the 44-57' range coming to Annapolis over the past 5 years, and I have only seen a couple of boats approaching the build quality of the X5. I hope you received the message I sent through your app a few weeks ago that included a big list of questions for your sail. Have a great ride!

    At this stage I am only dreaming of eventually chartering a catamaran in the caribbean, but I still window shop on youtube (what the heck it's free!). After watching the factory tour I went back and watched the walk thru at 2017 boat show. If I understand correctly, the X5 comes with a lot of equipment standard, and has a very high quality, high end interior finish (I'm the wife so that is what I look at lol), so at $1.3M for a 50' catamaran, it seems like a value purchase to those in that market.

    It would be interesting to compare, apples to apples so to speak, between the Xquisite X5 and it's counterparts by other manufacturers with the same features and equipment. I'm sure you couldn't get a 100% match but you could get in the ballpark. I don't think there's quite as big of a gap between boat prices, taken as a whole, as some might think. There's after the sale differences between boats too.

    Hey there Craig! I dig the shades! Are they Serengeti? --
    This is a great video. They really do show how their lowered costs by doing everything in-house has been reinvested in higher quality workmanship and components. I worked for a ISO 9000/9001 certified company before and know how much goes into getting and maintaining it. Your tour of the facility inspired me to go back and re-watch your tour of the boat at the boat show...checking the finished product again after having seen how the sausage is made. I noticed how they match the veneer wood grain from panel to panel, across door-to-wall joints/spaces, and drawers to cabinet frames. The stitching around the gill windows, etc. etc. Oh, and the wiring and layout of the engine room!
    Oh...and nice tourist shots of South Africa too. ;-P
    (Did you bring your Toonies? Did you trade for Krugerrand?)
    Looking forward to all the stories and videos when you're 10-8 in a few weeks!

      I am already in Walvis Bay Namibia as I write this. The deck slap was almost non existent. When we were broadside there is some slap against the leeward hull but that is to be expected on any cat but when going down wind in 30+ knots in big waves it was very quiet.

      ISO 26262 is the safety standard for cars as far as torque security. With the increasing amount of current and voltage capacity in a non metal boat sitting in conductive seawater, I would want to see the electrical isolation standard. Any modern hybrid vehicle has safeties built in when isolation between the 300V 400A electrical grid and the cockpit breaks down.

  • @chonk8435

    Very nice but all of the custom parts will be VERY expensive when they break. I would like if they used more generic parts for common parts that fail in time due to wear. But love the boat...I guess if you can afford a 1.3 million boat, a $100 custom washer will be no problem.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  5 років тому

      I am quite sure if anything breaks you would just call Xquisite and they would send you a new "custom" part at a reasonable price. They seem to have a goal to keep their after sales service top notch to that the boats don't depreciate like many other boats do.

      Thanks Laurent. I did ask Tamas about an electric option. He said they dont have the power to push at a decent speed for a lengthy period of time that a boat would need to cross oceans. So it sounded like they were not interested at this time in doing an all electric model.
