    How hard would it be if you took that center fence/gate out of the barn and put the troughs on both sides for both pens, Just drive thought the center of the barn, that way you could unload silage wagon and wouldn't have to use the wheelbarrow.

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому

      The far end of the barn is too short for this wagon, and the right side of the barn is two pens. I have toyed with the idea of mixing them, but the size difference worries me.

    Opening that barn up with another exit would save you tons of time and effort. There are always ways to improve your operations, just because that's the way it's always been done doesn't make it right or the smartest. You could have been done feeding and moving on to something else.. thx for the nice video!!

    could you put the bunks at the other end so you could drive the wagon to them? Even if you had to use fewer bunks to maintain access to each pen and then had to feed more often you could avoid wheeling it? I'd rather pull a feed wagon 3 times a day then wheel it all once, although I have done both

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      In the current placement, the bunks are well out of the weather to entice the cattle to eat more, especially on cold days. I have been thinking of moving the water troughs and make one solid feed bunk with a conveyor system.

    Put a hitch on the front of your tractor or pickup.
    It makes backing/ parking wagons in tight places much easier.
    I agree with Jake - chainsaw a hole in the end wall, push in a wagon backwards with the tractor, turn the tractor around and hook up PTO.
    Shill should save a lot of labor time.
    If you don't feed out the whole wagon, back it up to the end and park overnight.
    If you don't get ahead of your labor costs and time wasting activities you'll never keep up.
    Good luck fellas.

    I'm very new to your channel and have been watching back vlogs as it is a sweltering 96 here in the middle of the mitten. I am so fascinated by all this farming stuff but I have come to the conclusion that you boys are "young farmers", yes? Are there just the two boys in the family and are you both sitting on an agricultural education? We are here in Sackett Potato country-big operation-and they usually spend Christmas afternoons going through the farming catalogs to decide which "toys" the money is going to be spent on the following year...and we are talking millions of "toy" dollars. I watch your farming operation and see just as much joy and thrill with your purchases. Do you set your farming equipment budget based on needs or what comes up in your price range? Being a master gardener, I am always watching and looking at what the soil is being used for and your vlog has given me a renewed hope in the smaller farms coming back into fashion and fewer acres in land banks. Growing and supplying the food we so desperately rely on makes me appreciate your farming passion daily! One quick thought...could you possibly consider a video more in-depth with your greenhouse use down the road? Love your vlogging style by the way, very refreshing to see young folks use the English language so as I can understand what it is that's being talked about. Shall have to see if I can help bump your subcribers numbers up quicker!!! :)

    • @boehmfarm4276
      @boehmfarm4276  6 років тому +1

      Well, we do have a long time before we are old farmers, so yes, young farmers. I, Jacob am the only child. Brad is my best friend from college, he helps a lot, in fact, he does all the editing for the videos. I have a degree in Agronomy, Brad is an athletic trainer. I shop everyday on craigslist, dad reads the farm paper classifieds. Equipment purchases are based on price mostly. I don't think we really budget for equipment; it's make do with what we have, unless a great deal comes along. For example, we probably didn't need the 2910 Ford, but the incredibly low price on it and our experience with Ford tractors made it a great deal. The square baler might be the closest budget buster. I was looking for lower price balers, but the low use of our new machine for the price was impeccable. If I didn't find something, I probably would have twisted the arm of our old IH baler another season. Currently, I really want a grain truck so we don't have to haul wagons, but we have a functional system currently, so a truck better be low cost. Yes, once the greenhouse gets going next year, there will be a better explanation of it. I may have disliked English class, but I still put the knowledge to good use. Thank you for the help!

      Jerseys just don't grow. Other dairy breeds are hard to come by. And beef calves excavate your pocketbook. I couldn't justify feeding a cow just to produce a calf once a year.

    Keep talking Jacob, after all it's your video to us unwarshed masses. Let Brad complain he doesn't even mean it. Cows love green chop. Not sure how much easier it is for the cows after silage is made but it certainly doesn't turn brown in two days. Humans in China where they make a lot of pickled food have a higher incidence of cancer. Don't think that pertains to cows as cancer from pickled food does not get started that quick. My dad loved pickled pigs feet and he died from cancer. Not sure if there is a correlation there either

    I’d think taking the time to put a door in would be well worth the time and only needs to be done once but eliminate every day 1-2x a day back and worth. Just saying. What’s with the gross water trough? The water should be where they can’t get chop in it if that’s the issue. I’m a stickler for fresh clean water. Sprinkle some salt on your chop or a spray a little molasses - they will eat it better.
    Yes green starts to ferment fast ...all that nitrogen/protein.

    • @lukestrawwalker

      It ferments because of plant sugars, not protein or nitrogen... that's how yeast makes ethanol... 56 pound bushel of corn + water + yeast + time to ferment = 44 lbs of dry distillers grain (DDG) + about 3 gallons of ethanol by the time the water is taken out of it. The yeast ignore the protein but convert some of the starch/sugars to alcohol, since there's less dry matter (DDG) than there was at the beginning (ground corn), and the amount of protein remains the same, the protein concentration of the DDG is 56/44 that of the original protein content of the corn meal put into the fermenter. We have about 45, ranging from bottle to freezer size. Yep, sell the hay. I wouldn't worry about more animals to feed now. At one point we had sixty on hand, and that was extremely crowded. I don't want to do that again.

    Wait so if ur feeding steers why would u go with Holsteins? Get yourself some angus cattle. I'm only 15 and I have 20 black angus heifers and a red angus bull. so if I can afford to do it they aren't too expensive. Also why don't u get a small loader and use a bucket into the other side of the barn that's open. It would save u tons of time.

    • @boehmfarm4276
