    This video was made strictly for fun. Both of these are great and very fun to shoot. The rear sight on both rifles are set at a minimum distance of 200 yards, which is why they both were shooting high. Thanks for watching.

    It seems to me like the Krag would've been a superior infantry weapon if they made it a few inches shorter, designed a new version of 30-40 that was rimless and worked out a charger clip design for it like the ones used for the K-31. K-31 clips already work for krags.

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna 3 місяці тому

      Nah. The Krag was cumbersome and overly complicated. The Mauser system the 1903 used was less smooth but much simpler and easier to load, and the action could handle vastly more powerful loads.

    I feel like if you had a handful of ammo for the krag, it would load faster. Instead of grabbing one round at a time. However, in every video I see, people are reloading their krags by dropping one in at a time. Couldn't you have 5 rounds in your hand, and drop in at a time? My next question, since I don't own a Krag, could you drop all five into the magazine at once? Also, without stripper clips is the Springfield still faster? Thanks for the video, I love both of these guns.

    I own the krag and have used the 03 extensively. I agree that it is a strange comparison. A few things you might not consider. Regardless of the test shown here, I would argue the Krag is the more accurate rifle, though when dealing with such old models you have to consider ware which will vary greatly in existing examples of each rifle. I would also point out that the 06 round really is better for distance marksmanship and was used well into WWII as a sniper rifle and unlike the film, SGT York captured so many Germans by raining down holy hell on German machine guns at a distance they couldn't retaliate from. That being said, the reason we changed to the Garande for WWII was because most soldiers couldn't make use of the extra range afforded to the bolt action 03, and even downsizing to the 5.56 was partly due to most engagements and proficiencies maxing out at 300 yards, of which the krag is more than capable. Even the idea of adopting the 06 round had much more to do with machine gun ballistics than rifles as the thought process at the time was to chamber the infantry rifle and machine guns in the same calibre and there are no 30 Army Machine guns I'm aware of, largely having to do with the rimmed cartridge, which was largely what played into the adoption of the Krag. Since the round was developed first, rim and all, the army originally wanted a single shot rifle like the rolling block, but in trials, they decided they wanted a magazine, but were afraid of rimlock, and the krag design prevents rimlock from occuring. I also much prefer the sights on the krag and they do make excellent deer rifles. I would also like to point out that most of the videos I see about the krag have the shooter load one round at a time, when you really can dump a handful of ammo in. Not suggesting that it is as fast as a clip by any means, but it seems every channel wants to highlight the flaw of the side gate by loading as slow as possible to show contrast. The bolt is the fasted bolt action I've ever used and that is largely because of the lack of locking mechanisms required for the 30-40 krag (originally known as 30 Army which the predated the rifle in the army's trials). The best version of the Krag, which were built in the respective countries of Denmark, USA, and Norway as Krag didn't actually manufacture any weapons aside from prototypes, was the Norwegian variation as it was the the last designed with several improvements and also had a superior 6.5 x 55 Swede cartridge, and specifically the 1912 carbine being designed for hot spitzer rounds. Unlike the American krags, which were standard issue to engineers in WWI as well as being adopted by the navy for same, the Norwegians kept the rifle well past WWII, though it could be argued it had to do with them staying neutral outside of covert operations in Finland.

    • @joeybadger
      @joeybadger 2 роки тому

      One other detail, as I hear a lot of references to the Spanish American War, is that most Krags that exist today have improvements that were updates to the rifles used in said war. I would also point out that the cavalry didn't use the krag, as the carbine krags didn't come out till 1899, and instead used Winchester 1895s, which if you aren't familiar, didn't have a tube magazine and had much more powerful spitzer rounds that Teddy Rosevelt described as being able to punch through Spanish defenses. The 1895s were only approved for cavalry as the army didn't like lever action rifles due to their procieved weakness at prone fire, though the 1895's were also used by the Russians in WWI. Last interesting fact, but speaking of the army's disdain for lever guns, a little known fact is there were actually two survivors of the Custer massacre who retreated back to camp where there were boxes of Winchester 66s that only two men were able to effectively fend off the entire Native attack, but Custer, despite having enough rifles to issue to his entire unit, refused to hand them out.

    I think it would make more sense to compare the 1903 Springfield with the Mauser G98 or the Kar98k. Both have the same type of action, use a stripper clip feed, and are known for accuracy.

    • @geoechidna
      @geoechidna 3 місяці тому

      Technically the 1903 is an adaptation of the Model 93 Mauser with an added safety lug. It’s unlikely the US would have been able to copy a 98 that fast. Whereas the US also had tons of captured 93s from the Span-Am War a few years prior.

  • @Sanderford
    @Sanderford Місяць тому

    I would say overall the Springfield was the superior rifle, but the only reason the tests which saw it adopted in the first place happened was because of issues with the Springfield M1892-99 which had ironically mostly been corrected.
    It had been strengthened to allow it to deal with higher pressures, and there were at least two mechanisms invented which let it be loaded more quickly, one being a loading cassette which handily dumped five rounds in all at once, and the other a handy stripper clip which functioned by setting into a guide rail installed next to the magazine hatch.
    I would also like to point out you could load six rounds into the Krag, which may seem small, but one extra round could be a life saver in a fight. You could do the same thing with the M1917.
    That said, in terms of range and accuracy to my knowledge the '03 was still superior, and adopting it was a fine choice.

    El Krag Jorgensen es un fusil excelente que fué de dotación en el ejército de EEUU - calibre 30/40.
    Hermoso y demasiado fino.
    Lo adoptaron después del desastre de la Colina San Juan en Cuba - donde los españoles con el modelo 1893 calibre 7 mm los superaban por lejos.
    El Springfield tiene la acción Mauser 98 - por la cual los EEUU debieron pagar en ese entonces 230 mil domares de derechos y royalty - porque Mauser los denunció ya que copiaron su acción sin autorización.
    Los dos son importantes exponentes de la historia militar y las armas.
