I am 70 years old. Thank you for these tutorials. Art teachers are very underrated in our society. It needs to stop. Kids learn so many skills that apply to other areas of life that I believe it should be incorporated more into science, history and math. God bless you.
Contour drawing is not an easy task. You have to have a good understanding of the subject and a good drawing skills. Your drawings are so creative and artistically expressive. It’s a great piece. 34
I have been using this technique for building observational skills during my portrait unit (and still-life) in middle school for 2 decades. The amount of growth in students speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing!!!
@@ThatArtTeacher ...I forgot to mention, since I just found ur video...I used it as motivation for portrait lesson a couple of weeks ago. It was perfect😊
This tutorial on contour drawing is excellent. It renewed my interest in this form of art and I taught my 8 and 10 year old grandson contour drawing based upon the "Art Teachers" video. Thank you so much and I can't wait to learn more. Great presentation.
Your teaching style is amazing! So down to earth and approachable. I teach high school art, and I use your video as a springboard for contour drawing. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge, and for making it so accessible and fun :)
I just tried this for the first time & it was so much fun! I drew a cat from a picture on my calendar & it came out hilarious but cute! Thank you for sharing this relaxing exercise!! I'm hooked!
these are beautiful. that's a great idea to bring a sketchbook with you to capture that moment. i remember contour drawing, it's been a long time! haha
Ok, I just found out about this in a book I bought, and it blew my mind so I had to find a video on it. This is so much fun! I don't have anyone to draw right now, so I've done a few of myself and from magazines. And I would TOTALLY hang this up. I'm going to draw one on a canvas and add some paint and see what I get! (Also, I totally have to buy that pen! I love how it looks on paper!!)
love this tutorial, but i have a quick question... i was taught that contour drawing was done very slowly and that gesture drawing was done very fast. you are doing your contours very fast, what is the disconnect between how/what I was taught and what you are teaching? love your stuff btw!
Thank you ❤️ Go slow! I speed my videos up a little for the attention span of my students. Plus I am a fast and furious type of artist 🤣. Slow is the technique, and I need to remind myself of that every time.

Hi Emma! Thank you so much, I’m so glad you’re finding my video helpful! I got my nails done at a salon (like two days before our shut down in March 😜😳) so I’m not sure the color name. It was a dip manicure, but I think OPI has some great gel colors you can do at home. ❤️

It is okay to do blind contour drawing with INTERNET PHOTOS? (for increasing drawing skills), i mean everyone aparently does them from "real" objects. i find quite boring to draw the same stuff.
I don't believe in rules that stop you from drawing! I love drawing from real objects/ people, but I also love drawing from reference images. I think as long as you are working and growing your own track. ❤
I am very beginner i just started drawing. I heard this word contour line by reading art book. My question this that what is the benefit of this kind of draw. Why should i learn contour line art. My question could be stupid as i said i am very new in this field. Kindly tell me i have no idea what is that.
That’s but a stupid question at all! It’s practicing observational drawing and focusing on hand eye coordination. I love doing blind contours because it’s purely an exercise in training your hand and eye to work together. It’s also great for training your brain to draw what it actually sees, and not our perception of what something “should” look like. These are great for building skills, but I love the style so much I consider them great for building “finished” pieces
I notice you say that these are quick drawings. In "The Natural Way to Draw" and "Drawing in the Right Side of the Brain" emphasizes that contour drawing are done very SLOW, where gesture lines are fast.
You're right! I have "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", and yes, Betty Edwards suggest to go slowly. But, just a thought, I think what happens in time is that your comfort level goes up, and you naturally get faster. Check out the work of Felix Scheinberger, I think he uses a good amount of contour drawing in his art, but he too goes rather quickly. But he's been drawing for more than a decade...I too find myself moving a bit fast, but again, I think because I start to feel comfortable in time. But if you're just starting, it's best to slow it down.
Great question! In my mind, the benefit of not looking is completely using hand eye coordination. It’s a great old school technique to help break you of not relying on what you think something should look like opposed to the actual line/shape relationship. I like to look a little when I’m trying to get something more visually accurate, but my favorite is practicing blind contours. ❤️
Is your demonstration sped up or are you drawing as quickly as your video implies? If you are truly connecting with your subject and drawing what you actually see, the speed should be significantly slower.

Absolutely! Love both of those books, they’ve been staples since my college days. ❤️

I kept most of it real speed, but I’d have to go back and look. I’ve always been accused of rushing things. 😎
Awesome drawing. But I think she raised her pen during the "Contour" drawing.
