Putting aside his argument that any such country would be untenable given that it would be surrounded by vastly greater numbers of people who would never accept them as neighbors, which actually has some merit as history has unfortunately shown, although to date it's been able to survive and thrive despite the massive human costs incurred by its and other peoples, I don't see how legally purchased land was "appropriated", which implies ill-gotten if not outright stolen. Or did he mean that turning such otherwise lawfully acquired land into an actual country was illegitimate? And if so how, given that Israel was lawfully founded under the auspices of the lawful British Mandate and then UN, its borders up to 1967 recognized by the latter as lawful? Or is the argument more of a moral than legal one, and even then how, given that there has always been a Jewish presence in the area, albeit a small one in the centuries leading up to the first European Jewish settlers arriving, and that they arrived legally and settled on and developed legally purchased land? Thing is, although the emotional or whatever you want to call it claim to "Zion" was indeed based on biblical history, verified by historical research as substantially true even if the specific details are often wrong, the legal claim to it was entirely based on Ottoman, then British Mandatory and finally UN law, with the biblical claim playing no legal role, as being unnecessary and of course ridiculous.

Coleman has recently done considerable research on the topic and pushed back the best he could against his guest. It seems to me that the entire question goes back to the establishment of Israel in 1948, if not before. If one accepts 1948 and the establishment of Israel as a nation, then Israel is in the right. They have a right for example to respond in a very significant way to the attack on Oct. 7th. To not respond, and significantly is to surrender their claim to safety and even it seems existence.

I have had the honor of meeting with Professor Chomsky three times and having lunch meetings. He really is a very kind man and a living encyclopedia. He asked me many questions. It seems that he has a never ending thirst for knowledge and facts.

You reveal so much of your views on the matter by implying that it was only entitled to an inch, although in reality they were offered a bit more than an inch, and took it, but were attacked anyway, by countries unwilling to give them even that one "inch" (and of course used the opportunity to nearly double what they were offered initially). Plus, your very reasoning also implies that by being given this "inch", their right to be there was, however grudgingly, validated and approved, or else why would they have been given even so much as a millimeter? I think “theocracy” is the wrong word for Israel, because the civilian leadership is separate from the religious leadership. However, it is clearly a democracy where some people are more equal than others. The ultra orthodox don’t have to serve in the IDF. They get subsidies to have big families and take land from Palestinians in the West Bank. The whole notion that Israel is Jewish rather than secular with equality for all is obvious - advocating the opposite would be laughed out of the Knesset, if not chased out at gunpoint.

You left out the crucial fact that after WW2 , Britain was prepared to follow through with a two state solution...but guess what happened to destroy that possibility? One day after Israel formally became a nation it was attacked by six muslim nations. So the muslims are the ones who blew the chance for a Palestinian state, and they did so because they didn't want a two state solution in the first place...they only wanted a Palestinian state and Israel gone.

I'm Israeli and my roots here go back to the middle of the 19th century, right in Jerusalem, even before Zionism. In those days Jerusalem had more Jews than Moslems. Jerusalem saw a rapid rise in Jewish population increase at the very end of the 19th century due to eastern European immigration, so yes in Jerusalem(not as drawn up as current Jerusalem of course)where they initially immigrated too, led to a Jewish majority at that specif point(not the rest of the 19th century). All in all though the Jewish population of the whole Palestine territory fluctuated between 3-8% according to Italian-Israeli demographer Bachi(Ottoman sources would be at the lower end). If your argument is that Jews and Arabs both have rightful claim and historical presence in that land, then yes of course and they both should live there without a doubt. This doesn't negate anything Noam said in this clip, and if you disagree please feel free to enlighten us.

@@angc1456 Hi, it's kinda complicated but in his wonderful book, New Horizons in the Study of Language and Mind, he suggests Language is an inherent survival mechanism as much as other senses, such as smell, taste, sight, and is naturally preprogrammed to spot what's wrong. i.e. My mother (and millions x millions more like her) whose disposition is to always pick out faults. That's because that is easy and 'natural' to do. What's far more difficult is to be constructive ;-0) p.s. If you want to see that in action, check out the comments section in your local right-wing newspaper - for us here it's the Daily Mail - and check out how the most voted for comments are usually highly negative/critical. The first book I read was 'Manufacturing Consent', (1988?) which he co-wrote with Edward Herman, and really encapsulates how the media really is happy to keep debate within the Left/Right parameters, so anything outside of that is considered madness. I think Manufacturing Consent is also a reply to the book Propagand by Edward Bernays, 1928: on how to manipulate the American Mind through P.R. Fascinating stuff! On my personal journey for truth and understanding I always include Noam’s perspective on issues that perplex me. Whether I agree or not on a particular point I am compelled to listen to his positions as he has always given me food for thought.
Chomsky is just preocuupied with self-hatred which translates into hatred of the USA. Ask him about any problem in the world and he will explain to you that the USA is to blame. In his mind, people outside the US are not real people who bear responsbilitiy for their actions.

It is so frustrating to follow Noam for years , reading and listening to his factual interpretations of geopolitics. Unfortunately, we see very little become of his vast knowledge. Almost everyone respects him , very few can challenge him. Yet after 70 years of his enlightening thoughts, we are still a world full of hate .
Without watching first, the key problem is that one people have taken possession of another people's land and have not offered a fair division of that land beyond the point at which the dispossed people realised they would never recover the land entirely. There are numerous other problems such as one group of the dispossessed being ruled by religious extremists at present, but in my view if that key issue was resolved the other issues would melt away with varying degrees of speed.

I guess that with old age he must have forgotten the 1973 war when without immediate US aid and support Israel’s very existence would have been brought into question. It was taken by surprise by the 1973 war and for a short while it was put on the back foot. Both the US and the Soviet’s poured extra munitions into the area but Israel managed to best the Arab coalition. Israel was reminded of it’s vulnerability to surprise attack and it’s inability to trade ground. It has not forgotten this point. I’m not familiar with Mr Chomsky history, you may be able to put me right. I do know that he has an extreme antipathy for the US. Prior to 1967 most left leaning people supported Israel and Zionism. I haven’t listened to Chomsky for a long time. I read manufacturing consent about 30 years ago and it had a big influence on my worldview. With this recent bombing of Gaza, I wanted to hear non-Chomsky‘s perspective again. I’m grateful that he is still with us, and we are able to hear his point of you, as this is Railey attack on the Palestinians rages on. When the inner viewer asked what is the biggest cause of the conflict, I said, to myself the taking of the land from Palestinians. And that is what he affirms. It’s such a small percentage of Jews who acknowledge Israel’s theft of land from the Palestinians, that to have a Jewish person of Noam Chomsky‘s stature and knowledge of history, pointing it out with such detail, the truth of what is happening in Israel and Palestine Vitally significant helpful and positive. You are right about that. I'd like to see him on with an opponent. I recently watched Coleman Hughes on his podcast with a Palestinian apologist. Coleman has recently done considerable research on the topic and pushed back the best he could against his guest.
It seems to me that the entire question goes back to the establishment of Israel in 1948, if not before. If one accepts 1948 and the establishment of Israel as a nation, then Israel is in the right. They have a right for example to respond in a very significant way to the attack on Oct. 7th. To not respond, and significantly is to surrender their claim to safety and even it seems existence.

Even though the Arabs ruled the Land from 640 c.e. to 1099 c.e., they never became the majority of the population. Most of the inhabitants were Christians (Assyrian and Armenian) and Jews.

Even though all these factors there were 600k Jews in Palestine in 1947 and 1.4 million Arabs ? I think “theocracy” is the wrong word for Israel, because the civilian leadership is separate from the religious leadership. However, it is clearly a democracy where some people are more equal than others. The ultra orthodox don’t have to serve in the IDF. They get subsidies to have big families and take land from Palestinians in the West Bank. Jerusalem saw a rapid rise in Jewish population increase at the very end of the 19th century due to eastern European immigration, so yes in Jerusalem(not as drawn up as current Jerusalem of course)where they initially immigrated too, led to a Jewish majority at that specif point(not the rest of the 19th century). All in all though the Jewish population of the whole Palestine territory fluctuated between 3-8% according to Italian-Israeli demographer Bachi(Ottoman sources would be at the lower end). If your argument is that Jews and Arabs both have rightful claim and historical presence in that land, then yes of course and they both should live there without a doubt. This doesn't negate anything Noam said in this clip, and if you disagree please feel free to enlighten us.

@@angc1456 Hi, it's kinda complicated but in his wonderful book, New Horizons in the Study of Language and Mind, he suggests Language is an inherent survival mechanism as much as other senses, such as smell, taste, sight, and is naturally preprogrammed to spot what's wrong. i.e. My mother (and millions x millions more like her) whose disposition is to always pick out faults. That's because that is easy and 'natural' to do. What's far more difficult is to be constructive ;-0) p.s. If you want to see that in action, check out the comments section in your local right-wing newspaper - for us here it's the Daily Mail - and check out how the most voted for comments are usually highly negative/critical. I cannot recommend Chomsky's books enough!!

The first book I read was 'Manufacturing Consent', (1988?) which he co-wrote with Edward Herman, and really encapsulates how the media really is happy to keep debate within the Left/Right parameters, so anything outside of that is considered madness. I think Manufacturing Consent is also a reply to the book Propagand by Edward Bernays, 1928: on how to manipulate the American Mind through P.R. Fascinating stuff! Happy reading. ;-0) [Sadly, I think, we have to someone wade through all this heavy nonsense just to understand why we can't live a happy, free life full of love and peace, which is what I think Chomsky does for us ;-0)]

@@bubbaluv6487 Chomsky is old and ill right now and not really active anymore. But Norman Finkelstein is very active and brilliant on the topic. Chomsky still said many things which are still worth reading relevant to today though.
Chomsky, though in his twilight years, is an absolute (inter)national treasure. What a succinct, accurate, devastating analysis of the Gaza mess.

It is so frustrating to follow Noam for years , reading and listening to his factual interpretations of geopolitics. Unfortunately, we see very little become of his vast knowledge. Almost everyone respects him , very few can challenge him. Yet after 70 years of his enlightening thoughts, we are still a world full of hate .

What I find amazing is how long it takes the host to formulate his first question.
Without watching first, the key problem is that one people have taken possession of another people's land and have not offered a fair division of that land beyond the point at which the dispossed people realised they would never recover the land entirely. There are numerous other problems such as one group of the dispossessed being ruled by religious extremists at present, but in my view if that key issue was resolved the other issues would melt away with varying degrees of speed.
Not if Iran can help it.
@@SN-sz7kw they likely wouldn't help, but my feeling is if you never try you never know and if you try and the Palestinians/Arabs reject that attempt, Israel have the firepower and US support to retake everything they give up and more.

He blithely states that Israel made the decision to expand rather than have security in the early 1970s. I guess that with old age he must have forgotten the 1973 war when without immediate US aid and support Israel’s very existence would have been brought into question. It was this event which has shaped Israel’s mindset ever since.
Living to be at the age of 94yrs doesn't necessarily mean one becomes wiser. This man has ignored in disbelief to do a proper non-bias search concerning the entire history of this piece of realestate.
He did state that it was in 1967 that everything changed in the relationship with the U.S. Making your comment about a war in 1973 pretty much irrelevant.

@@waynejohnson2855 I am sorry I made fun of Mr Chomsky’s age. I believe that you have missed my point. Israel’s position after the 1967 was that it ruled the roost militarily in the Middle East. It was taken by surprise by the 1973 war and for a short while it was put on the back foot. Both the US and the Soviet’s poured extra munitions into the area but Israel managed to best the Arab coalition. Israel was reminded of it’s vulnerability to surprise attack and it’s inability to trade ground. It has not forgotten this point.
I’m not familiar with Mr Chomsky history, you may be able to put me right. I do know that he has an extreme antipathy for the US. Prior to 1967 most left leaning people supported Israel and Zionism. This changed when the US started to wholeheartedly support Israel. Was Mr Chomsky one of these people?

I haven’t listened to Chomsky for a long time. I read manufacturing consent about 30 years ago and it had a big influence on my worldview. With this recent bombing of Gaza, I wanted to hear non-Chomsky‘s perspective again. I’m grateful that he is still with us, and we are able to hear his point of you, as this is Railey attack on the Palestinians rages on. When the inner viewer asked what is the biggest cause of the conflict, I said, to myself the taking of the land from Palestinians. And that is what he affirms. It’s such a small percentage of Jews who acknowledge Israel’s theft of land from the Palestinians, that to have a Jewish person of Noam Chomsky‘s stature and knowledge of history, pointing it out with such detail, the truth of what is happening in Israel and Palestine Vitally significant helpful and positive. He is a blessing to humanity.
