    Do you think Caliban was meant to represent something in particular? maybe a feeling or even a group of people during this time.

    • @LitCrit

      It’s hard to know exactly what Shakespeare intended but my theory is that Caliban embodies the original inhabitants of the lands ‘discovered’ by the English and other Europeans in the 1500s and 1600s. Similarly, his poor treatment by Prospero and even the mild-mannered Miranda exemplify the newcomers’ attitude towards the original people. I’m tempted to think that Shakespeare at least wanted his audience to question the narrative of the unsophisticated ‘native’: many of the play’s most lyrical lines belong to Caliban and his mastery of another language is something I think Shakespeare wanted us to appreciate.

      Thank you! Trust me, I know it's hard to make Shakespeare engaging, especially during remote learning - that was me this time last year - it was tough. Luckily, here in Thailand the COVID situation is under control and things have returned to (almost) normal - for now at least! Hope everything works out for you!

    • @LitCrit

      One of the main points I wanted to convey was his complexity, such as his mastery of Prospero’s language, as evidenced in his speeches, as well as his self-awareness. I hope these aspects came through!

      @@LitCrit if there was a question how is caliban presented in the tempest? how would you answer it could you give 1-2 quick small paragraphs answering the question, with a point evidence and explanation.
      p.s have a good holiday

      Hi Muaaz, if I had to write an essay on that question I’d pick 3 or 4 key ways C is presented. To Miranda and Prospero, he is a deformed monster who deserves to be imprisoned and enslaved. However, he is also presented as intelligent, even charismatic at times, and has some beautiful lines that not only demonstrate an agility with language but an appreciation for the island’s beauty that is in opposition to the ‘deformed slave’ narrative mentioned earlier.!

    • @LitCrit
      @LitCrit  4 роки тому

      He’s also presented as someone who seeks to serve a master; despite his negative experiences with Prospero, he almost immediately decides to start worshipping Stephano and makes him many of the same promises he originally made to Prospero. A strong case can be made that Caliban represents the original inhabitants of the lands colonial powers such as Britain laid claim to, with Prospero and Miranda’s treatment of him representing the attitudes of the time.

    Not all protagonist are good
    You can take the example of Light Yagami from death note
    And not all antogonist are evil
    L. and Near from death note are the examples

    • @LitCrit
      @LitCrit  3 роки тому +3

      Agreed - as I mention in my video, it is definitely not always the case that the protagonist is good while the antagonist is evil. The Tempest illustrates this quite effectively through Prospero, in many ways an unlikeable character, and Caliban, who comes across as sensitive and perceptive, qualities that endear him to an audience.
