Inner Mongolia has been progressing a lot, a far more beautiful place than when I was there backpacking back in 1988. Back in 1988 I went backpack alone for 3 weeks from Hong Kong to Beijing then Inner Mongolia, never felt threatened or scared, it was one of the most memorable experience.

must be a guy. i used to have a girlfriend from Baotou, before 2005 or so, there were still daily purse snatchers and sexual harassment from young men on scooters all over Baotou city and it was dangerous for young women to just be walking on the streets even during the day. I'm very glad it's a lot safer now.

If you mean Hainan province, it might disappoint you. It has been criticised by local tourists for many years for overcharged service. The southern part of Yunnan is gorgeous.

As a Chinese, I can tell you that most farmers are very poor; in China, 600 million people have a monthly income of less than 1000 RMB（137 dollars）, and many elderly people in rural areas, due to having no income and not wanting to be a burden on their children, choose to commit suicide.

Years ago I visited a museum related to Mongol history. Many visitors looking exact Chinese villagers spoke to each other with mixed mandarin and Mongolian, very unique and cute. What's really mysterious is the once almighty Manchus completely lost their own language soon after they lost control of China.
They started losing their language long before they lost control of China. Even by the second generation, the Mongol administrators started worrying about how their people are no longer able to speak the mother tongue. There are historical documents and letters stating that.
Machus before they took the throne, they are various tribe of vassal to Ming China, meaning they all have to speak chinese to trade with the "world", after they rebel and took over, now they need to govern a population 200 times bigger with a huge landscape of various different dialect and language, to consolidate their rule, they has no choice but to make everyone of their tribesman to speak chinese (since they cant let Han people to take up all the important post in the government).
Another great crossover of Jason and Lee in rural region of China! Mongolian ethnic used to be nomad for centuries, but now they also turn to be farmer in this modern generation! Look like China gov had made a huge improvement to their live style and society status 👍
