Its not really a contest, You're both building boats, but for completely different priorities and design parameters. You want light weight and speed. Delos wants comfortable living spaces, strength and durability. The only common factor is you're both using aluminum. The majority of cruisers do not place your performance ratios at the top of their priority list once they realize what they have to give up to achieve those parameters.
@@marcvandaele1878 wtf are you talking about? Pretend we aren't just another voice in your head and spit out the whole conversation you had in that brain bucket.
Yep, sailing is fun because of the freedom and access it gives to different locations, honestly I don't think many people look at the speed as long as it's good enough. At very least not for liveaboard boat. Idk, to me speed really only makes sense for racers or if best part about sailing is beating times and going fast.
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM Maybe I should have clarified that James was boasting being a mechanic in his intro at the time. I believe he dropped that line a little later ;-)
Great topic and insights, but this discussion on performance vs. cruising catamarans could benefit from a bit more balance. I'm probably a little biased toward cruising cats since I help clients find the right fit for their needs, but here are some additional thoughts: It’s worth noting that most of the capsizes in the last five years have been with performance cats. They’re lighter, faster, and more agile, but that also means they require precise sail management and more attention to avoid getting overpowered-especially if you're shorthanded. In my own experience, both powerboating and five years of circumnavigation, I’ve appreciated the stability of a heavier cruising cat that doesn’t get tossed around by waves and wind. Comfort plays a huge role; reduced motion means less fatigue, and less fatigue means safer sailing. Even on my Leopard 48, which can be lively, I've found that she handles squalls better than a lighter, high-powered cat might. And don’t forget-when cruising around the world, you’re at anchor around 92% of the time. Space becomes a massive plus, and cruising cats can carry the load, whether it's dive gear, spares, or provisions. Sure, performance cats offer the thrill of speed and better upwind performance, which is fantastic for those who want that rush and can handle the trade-offs. But ultimately, it’s all about finding the balance that works for your sailing style, comfort level, and long-term plans. Both types have their place; it’s just about matching the right boat to the right sailor.
Understood, but one way has respect for the sea and the other doesnt. Eventually you will be caught out. Also, you don't have to sail fast. Going at 8 knots (and undercanvassed) compared to 5 dramatically reduces your time at sea and a potential clobbering.

I think hull beam/length ratio is more useful especially for cats. The Displacement/waterline ratio is more for monos. For example, a lot of roomarans are between 8-10 on the beam/length ratio. So they're slow as buggery but are designed to take the weight. My boat was around 12-13 (pescott whitehaven) so went like a bat out of hell but noticed the weight-- especially when I lived on her. Nevermind though you brought up Delos 2.0 in this video so this should shut them asses up. Looking forward to next video. Oh and that was interesting about the weight of the Cat. However a lot of the Cat owners prefer cruising Cat rather than a faster lighter performance CAT. it doesn't mean they don't know there boat or what they're doing it's just their preference in sailing. Look at SY Zatara Big Cat not performance and she sailed the world with a family. Your Cat is going to be a really good looking performance Cat and likely sail fast in low winds. And yes Aluminum seems to be the way the Cat's and other sailing vessels are going. Looking forward to next video Peter until then cheers take care
the weight issues...., if you are genuinely a minimalist and want to LIVE FULL TIME ABOARD, then consider an Outremer 45 or Mumby 48 (as an example) with small displacement hulls, paired with dagger boards and enjoy the accelerating speeds that you may have during the 15% of time you actually sailing because normally your anchored for the rest of that time, or for that quick and see nothing dash around the world. That is the truth. You have to except having very minimal stuff on board, even cutting back on spares and other maintenance materials and now have to spend more time in ports buying spares as you need them. On the other hand, a more displacement boat will allow for water toys, lots of spares, boat materials, food to last a for a couple months which makes you more autonomous and independent from ports allowing you to stay well off grid for many months at a time while being mostly at anchor. This is what most people who want to cruise, strive to have. Guess who will have a more comfortable life? Certainly not living in this guys tin can. It's all up to every individual with what boat suits them best. I have been cruising around Asia for the past 10 years on a Catana 431, which is overloaded. If I was to do it again, a more displacement hull with keels would have suited me better. I am not complaining, but I think this guy is just being bias, has stove pipe vision and an obsession's for having nothing aboard. PS. he tossed all the AC units among other things off his first catamaran.

I think you are missing the point, Lagoon (aside from there bulkhead problems) build some of the nice's boats for living on, and from what I understand, most people will only sail 10-15% of the time they are living on the boat, Living on the boat is the key point... I think the difference is.. a Porsche car or a Cadillac car... yup, you are building a Porsche, but are you really gonna do twenty knots and for how long how far? one has to really baby-sit a boat going that fast, speed also equals big seas, big water, big surf, big paying attention.... that big surf and big waves big wind will usually mean scaring the crap out of the crew.... am I wrong?
I would say somewhat wrong at least. One of the big advantages of a performance boat is that you can get the same speed as a heavier boat in lower windspeed. So you can pick lighter wind, more comfortable days to get there. Every sailor has to choose where their priorities lie and the market luckily has options for different tastes (for those who have the budget to satisfy their taste).

Lagoons are good but only for calmer seas, and constantly mooring.
@@tms1624 I have given up trying to explain any of this stuff to anyone anymore. The _Delos_ fan-club is just blinkered into believing a LOT of nonsense they are happy to project onto their idols. Quite pathetic really.
I think you are missing the point
@Ivansgarage it's all in good clean fun! But the econo challenge? Fossil fuel free sailing around the world? With a crew of gorgeous people? Now that is a Challenge for the modern Era! And throw in extremely fast safer sailing? Priceless! WooHoo!
Good luck Plucky you got this I can’t wait till you guys meet up again and can have a little race you got this buddy
How much $$$$ has it cost so far ????
Thanks, Plukky, good content as always.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been watching for the last month. No excuses I’ll get back on with my normal commentary and we’ll get the Argo going.
Fight to the death?...Fight to the debt 😮😅
Quite true
Omg you can pass through an iceberg with so much al. reinforcement !!
To be honest.. you dont need a girlfriend... you need a boat...keep focus😌
Heeeeyyy Plucky, how the heck Arrr Ye Matey? Sooo Goood to see you, brother. Dude, I'm so sorry, your not getting any welding done, LOL, what ya just got'a get is, a drop-dead gorgeous, little, Viet girl to help with the filming, editing, and "Stuff", won't be like ya never had a girl "HELPING A BROTHER OUT", now wouldn't ya?
Bet the underdog and take odds. Freedom will cover spread. Plucky for the Win.

Nobody wins a competition with yourself but you.
If I have to compare the amount of tears running down my cheeks from lauging, SIF wins.
POSITIVE COMENTN FOR ALGO
Looks like clickbait. Fiction vs something that is real. Good luck holding on to viewers. Miss you old videos. Change is the one thing we can all depend on. Good luck.
If you are buying a boat and thinking about interior trim before safety and sailing performance you are doing it wrong
Poor seamanship is more dangerous and sinks more boats than weight or speed , any boat , fast and light or slow and heavy is one poor decision away from joining long reef on the bottom
Re your filming . Ya every time I see video of some YTer on a hike I realize they walked the same spot 4 times , once to see a good site , once to set the camera , once or twice to film then back to get the camera . Ever trial they walk it 3 or 4 times in certain sections . Plus all the stopping to film a flower or a bug and everyone has to wait , and on top lugging all the camera gear . Actually is hard work .
Light v heavy - another view from cat Impi replying to vagabond when they got caught in a storm
Impi also were glad to be in a heavier boat during a horrendous storm

The docility of a vessell is not a measure of its performance. The trick is to have sailed away from the most harmful weather in the first place. When it gets too lively, jordan series drogue it and adjust for comfort
I bet you're not missing the moaning / whinging 😂😂😂
