The Grey Controller is a reference to John Major, the (Conservative) Prime Minister of the UK between 1990 and 1997, who oversaw the privatisation of British Rail. He was incredibly dull and boring and was always portrayed in satirical media as having grey skin.

Literally grounded is how you can best describe it. The stories are very down to earth and realistic, yet it’s still entertaining as it doesn’t need to be so out of the box

@@datguymiller Victor’s stories are very entertaining as while they are realistic, it’s more that they have a historical timeline to them, as if you were to watch the entire series in chronological order, you start to realize what (roughly) year the story is being told on. Victor is a very impressive creator for someone who works practically on his own with everything, from filming to post production and voiceovers being all him.

One of the biggest problems with the UK rail system since privatisation has been that it doesn't have "Owners" it has "Operators". The rights to service the routes are bought by multiple companies, the rails are pretty much leased by another company, and a lot of the rolling stock is rented. The government also make all these companies rebid for these contracts every (IIRC) 4 years, so if they spent billions getting everything into top condition, they may only be paying all that to hand it over to whoever DOES win the contracts if they aren't successful.
The whole system is designed in such a way that it actively discourages anyone doing more than patching over the cracks and bodging things together just enough to get them to the end of the current contract.
There's also the problem where the private companies are running the train service AS A BUSINESS (Who'd have imagined it) ! If the contract says the train operator needs to provide service to some small out of the way station, but the cost in fuel of stopping and accelerating the train isn't covered by the 2 or 3 people who use that station, a business will look at their obligations and work out a more cost efficient method of complying with the wording (If not the spirit) of the rules. For example, One company realised that it was costing them money to cover a load of out of the way rural stations with a train, so as they were contractually obliged to offer service, they had a taxi company send one of their taxis to drive the same route every day, then wait in each stations carpark at the trains advertised arrival time. The stations had a signs stating that there was a "Vehicle replacement service" in operation, but if there happened to be more than 3 people wanting to use the service on any day, all other people would be out of luck...... The rail company was contracted to lay on the service, there was nothing in the rules that said all passengers were garenteed that there'd be room on the "Train" for them.
They did this because these few stations were consuming a significant chunk of THEIR little slice of the pie. If they'd had the WHOLE pie, the few fork fulls that these stations took could be offset against the money made from the more profitable city to city express lines, but other companies bid much more to get those. :(
If the government just sold the whole system outright to one company I think (Depending on WHO the company was) it could solve a lot of problems.

Basically whenever infrastructure falls apart or prices surge, instead of doing something to the people who are responsible the Opposition will clamor for privatization (if the service in question is nationalized) or nationalization (if the service in question is privatized) without any regard for actually solving the problem. Then, crony capitalists and/or communists squirt out a little propaganda like this and the masses either run with it or don't, no major change takes place, and the service continues to operate in a duality of being over- and under-regulated, over- and under-funded and over- and under-utilized.
