If the pitches that we have seen are anything to go by, then the selectors should pick Umesh Yadav if Shami is still unavailable..he is another good exponent of reverse swing in Indian conditions..
and he can add 20-30 runs with bat also

Mukesh kumar averages 21 in ranji trophy and has been the best domestic fast bowler in India in recent time. People want players to be picked from ranji and not ipl but when ranji players don't perform in international cricket in 1 or 2 game, people go harsh on them.
Also Arshdeep needs to be groomed in test cricket. He has lot of potential for this format. We should have 4-5 fast bowling options. Can't rely on Bumrah, umesh and shami always.
When did we depend on umesh?

If England would have scored as many runs as India in the first innings India would be down 0-2.

Joe Root should be allowed to play at a pace he feels comfortable. There is difference between aggressive batting and Hara-kiri. He batted like a no.8 or 9 today.
What do you mean allowed to play? He’s given the freedom to bat how we wants, just because it doesn’t come off doesn’t mean he’s not batting how he sees fit
Yes he is sacrificing himself for the team's cause. He can bat normally and still score at a fair clip. If Stokes is allowed to take time, even Root can be. An inform Root can define the series for England here and I am sad England doesn't realize this. He is a world class player and should bat responsibly.

I agree. Amongst all this Bazball noise, Crawley actually played a rather sensible knock. Particularly, last evening, he was quick to realise that he needed to get through the spell of Bumrah and he played him with a normal approach that the situation demanded instead of going gung ho like Duckett. It's funny how Duckett was out defending in both innings. Looks like he didn't practice that enough amongst all his sweeps!
Bumrah is world class. No doubt about it. But while the emphasis should be on India's supreme paceman and Ashwin's excellence, I wonder if this new England will do some reflection on their middle order. Whether they'll do some reflection on how to properly play yourself in, instead of going big every time. Joe Root is playing both outside himself and within himself. It's like he doesn't really know how to play in this team. I feel like his one-day role would be perfect (keep a tight defence, play himself in, and keep the scoreboard ticking over with singles and clever runs) but instead he's trying to play like Brook or Stokes and never gets in. As for Bairstow, my goodness... we keep him around because every eight games or so he goes 'big' and everyone fawns over him. For me, he's not right for this team. Brook or Lawrence could probably average the same amount, but for me they're the no 5s of the future, let's get them in now.
Root was getting out to Bumrah and Ashwin, and he thought if he could be bit more aggressive, he would survive more. Thats my take. Scoring in away conditions is always a tough ask. And this Indian batting doesnt inspire confidence.

I genuinely felt that had england played sensibly after the fall of Olie Pope, build small partnerships along the way, they could have easily win the game. Sensible batting was the key, few batters just threw their wickets away. But take nothing away on how the Indians bowled. Top class stuff from Bumrah!
We can never say how things would have turned out. Its a dynamic game, bowlers keep changing their strategy based on what batsmen is doing.

Don't know why BCCI is opting to play on these flat tracks, we don't want pitches like Pakistan where anyone will come and score 400 and 500 runs in one day, we need to see the batsman too keep improving their skills to score runs rather then playing on flat tracks

so dust bowls will be fine for England? because you are not going to get any swinging green top pitch here in India, just like we don't get turning tracks in England.
Because the last time we got to the world test finals. Our batsman seemed to be not equipped to win by playing long innings. It still seems to be the case with regular test members even now. It's the newer bunch of players that are playing longer innings. Rank Turner gets a 90% guaranteed win. But in the long run, the players are out of practice in playing longer innings. Test cricket is about patience and temperament. and that requires practice.

The way England team decided to play in a very attacking way and at times ultraggressively after Ben Stokes and McCullum era started, any team would have kept getting bowled out for less than 250 scores and even less than 150 at times but that is the best thing about this team that when they bat well as a unit(which they usually do), they score big runs at 4+ run rate and even when they don't do that well as a batting unit, they still manage to score 250+ or at least 230 and never really get rolled over by opposition which is why everyone wants to watch this team now because everyone knows that Bazball has successfully worked and even when it won't work in some matches, England will still fight and not give up easily.
That's the problem with u guys who want entertainment rather than wins.
Windies in 80s and Australia in 90s and 2000 decade dominated test cricket. There was no bazball yet they destroyed teams almost everywhere. 250 is never enough in test cricket and test cricket has no limitation on time . If 5 days pass, and nobody wins its a draw unlike odi and t20.
Being positive and reckless is different. Crawley after making 70 went to destroy axar and got out. England eventually got out after that for 250. Contrast crawley with a Tendulkar lara or Richards, these guys would've made 100s yet wouldn't have committed harakiri..

Guess India will be relieved to be going into the 3rd test level given the number of players who weren’t available but can’t help thinking England missed a trick in being 2-0 up. There are ways to chase 399 & ways not to chase 399. They had 2 whole days to set their stall out and score the remaining 332 with 9 wickets in hand with batters like Pope and Root who’ve shown they can bat big & bat long ( Pope last week & Root with 5 double hundreds ). Both went at better than a run a ball today and got out to irresponsible shots for 23 & 16 but the approach, as it seems to be nowadays with this England team, is ‘we’re going to attack the target, no matter what it is’ in 40 overs like it’s a one day chase. They don’t seem prepared to make any allowances to this ‘Bazball’ ultra positive approach that we’ve seen since the first series under McCullum v NZ In 2022. Ok, it came off with 3 spectacular chases of roughly between 270-300 scoring at 4 & 5 per over but that mindset surely has to be tempered accordingly to suit the target and conditions, particularly chasing 400 in the sub continent. But I guess regardless of what’s said online or in the media, that’s the mantra this team will continue to adopt win, lose, draw or tie.

By hearing that bumrah will be rested for next test and shami also not available india must thinking bringing back Umesh yadav for next and play him in the 11 with siraj. As all of us know that Umesh yadav has done very well for india in india than in overseas. As Mukesh is not performing and also siraj not in good touch it's wise decision to bring back Umesh. Or else india must prepare a rang Turner in the next match in rajkot

For God Sake this is a TestTest Match not an ODI when you are given 180 overs w9 wickets to score 333 runs ie less than 2 runs an over you don't bat for 70 score at more than 4 runs an over and Tom Tom about it then if you want to lose and be happy play ODI and T20

Nasser's assessment is spot on- India missing key players and that makes the series very interesting. Inexperienced English spinners versus inexperienced Indian batsmen; experienced English batsmen versus experienced Indian bowlers. Let's see which one holds out come end of the series - I'd say 4-1 to India

@HuwEvans i think the general message to all the eng players from management is leave your brains in the dressing room when you come to bat... where's the game awareness when root was batting.... This casual & cavalier approach will end up losing more matches than wins....but it's your team...

I think England fans needs to calm down about this england team. Yes they love to attack and score 4-5 an over. This isnt india first team. Missing pant Kohli and Shami. If they played england would lose comfortablely and then they would scream the pitch is this the pitch is that.
