My '70's Southern Rock' playlist is about 580 tracks deep (a lot of it's including lesser-known bands). For ALL SR I have about 1,200 tracks across 300 different albums - great genre!
An album that never gets mentioned because it was incorrectly labeled. The Kentucky Headhunters, Pickin on Nashville. That's why they named the album that because they were a southern rock band incorrectly labeled as country band. They lost their lead singer and later became a country band. Also want to mention White Mansions it is a concept albums featuring many including Eric Clapton.. Also Outlaws any album as well.. And Amazing Rhythm Aces "Stacked Deck".. They are countless.. Note ones chosen could really be any album..
Note i posted before Pete aired.. Without Byrds / New Riders / Burrito Bros there never would've been Southern Rock.. Even Greg Allman said that himself.. But we all got different opinions and that is fine.. Keeps it interesting..
Hard rock fans may like to check out the four horsemen. They only had one album- nobody said it was easy. 90s. Think a cross between ac/dc and skynerd. Rockin is my business, nobody said it was easy and tired wings were hits.
Born in the south, live in the south, raised with this music and of the bands Pete mentions, saw several them before or right after they had recording contracts. One of the advantages of living in north central Florida at the time these bands came up. Can't/won't disagree with the ones listed by Pete and other commentators already posted. A genre of music that never tires for this listener. Thanks, Pete, for offering a road map for those interested in listening to this genre. But would say personal the number one choice for a newbie would be the Lynyrd Skynyrd debut. Thanks for this episode. Looking forward to the ones to come to expand the horizons in those genres.
I lived in Jacksonville, FL for 30 years. I got to see alot of these groups at local clubs when they were working on new stuff. Several of the surviving members of Skynrd would come in to where I worked.
Hi Pete, long time viewer and don't comment much but wanted to say thanks for the video. Nice to revisit these albums and give them a listen again. Appreciate all of the time and work that you do!
I noticed that someone in the comments had CCR's Cosmos Factory. There is a rural feel to CCR's music and they sound like a country rock band. What's not country rock about "Green River"? Would you place them in the country rock category? Just curious. Super good list, by the way.
Agree about The ABB...they preferred "an improvising band from the South" over southern Rock. B&S, though, I agree with your comments. It's a very eclectic album. No Duane...but Chuck Leavell really adds a different vibe.
Hi Pete a great choice of albums there i have them all , being a Brit i grew up with Zep & Sabbath etc then about 1975 i discovered Southern Rock it is always my go to style of music on a nice sunny day just good time music.
I think one needs to include Tony Joe White albums, he wrote 'Rainy Night in Georgia'. Also I think early CCR albums warrant starter list inclusion. Interesting format - cheers!
Lovin' the Newbie Starter Kit for different rock genres!!! My picks(no order).... * ALLMAN BROS. Self-titled album. *MOLLY HATCHET Self-titled album. *ZZ TOP: Dequello. *THE OUTLAWS: Ghost Riders In The Sky. *THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND Self-titled album. * LYNYRD SKYNRD: Gimme Back My Bullets. *38 SPECIAL: Special Forces. *BLACKFOOT: Strikes. *JONATHAN TYLER & THE NORTHERN LIGHTS: Pardon Me. * CRY OF LOVE: Brother. A little country, deep in the blues, and big guitar riffs!!!
Great vid Pete. I've always been a hard rock/heavy metal guy, but when I look back, I also listened to a lot of southern "fried" rock (as we called it in my neck of the woods). There was so many different genres of music in the 70s and 80s, with the music overlapping genres in so many of these albums, that you couldn't help listen to southern rock and loving it! Bands back then were no afraid to experiemnt and do there own thing back then. I certainly miss it and I hope folks who see this vid check these bands out. Seriously, it's great stuff, especially when sitting outside in the shade with a cold beer.
The Marshall Tucker Band's Searchin' For a Rainbow (1975) is an oft-overlooked gem. For me it conveys the South more vividly than any other music. Toy Caldwell's songwriting was absolutely in the groove, and George McCorkle's one song, Fire On The Mountain, is a masterpiece.
Some good choices. Southern Rock is undisputedly all American and so some of the choices like Marshal Tucker, The Allman Brothers and Charlie Daniels are more country loaded, so might not have the same appeal to those outside of the states, unless they are already big country fans. So Molly Hatchet, ZZ-Top, 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot are the first choices that will likely appeal to the widest audience. All the choices from these bands are good jumping off points. The other honourable mentions are also worth checking out.
Already a lover of southern rock like most people here . Have many of Pete’s suggestions already . But for fun saved all 10 recommendations to a new playlist on Spotify sat in my garden this sunny afternoon with a nice bottle of wine and put the playlist on random play and still enjoying . I can see more wine being opened ..Thank you Pete for the wonderful afternoon southern chill . And thank all the other posters for their selections too sure will pick the bones out of them for future music and wine chill out afternoons ❤❤Sending love to you all 💕💕💕😘😘😘
For newer SR albums try this as a playlist: The Brothers Bright/A Song Treasury Caleb Johnson/Born From Southern Ground Doc Holliday /Good Time Music The Georgia Thunderbolts/Southern Rock From Rome Ghost Riders/Five Honey Island Swamp Band/Custom Deluxe, Good To You & Demolition Day Hot Spring Water/Of A Morning Laidlaw - s/t Poco/The Wildwood Sessions Sam Morrow/Gettin' By On Gettin' Down
Brothers and Sisters by The Allman Brothers Band is my favorite southern rock album of all time because of Jessica being on the video game Guitar Hero 2 if you remember that video game, Pete.
...and The Marshall Tucker s/t album a couple of months earlier. Also their Way Out West live tour recording (in SF with the Allmans), also around that same time. Their first tour
Half this list could be Lynyrd Skynyrd. If you're looking to get into Southern Rock just go out and get the first five Lynyrd Skynyrd albums immediately
I had LS first album when it came out, but Allman Bros were already on their 3rd album. LS lost a little after their 2nd album but their 1st is thee essential So Rock genre.
Perfect video! I only own the first batch of Hatchet albums, and really haven't given the genre much attention aside as well from the first Skynard album.
Pete, couldn't agree with you more on those top 10 Southern Rockers. I have several cd's from all of them. I'm glad you mentioned ARS, because I think Ronnie Hammond had one of the best voices in Southern Rock. Speaking of which, and I'm sure that I'm in the minority on this, but I liked the later Hatchet albums with Phil McCormack on vocals. Their live album "Locked and Loaded" is fantastic. Props to the Outlaws, although it wasn't mentioned, "Bring It Back Alive" is arguably one of the best live albums ever. Thanks again for the video.
I've been thinking about Gary Rossington a lot lately and obviously he played a major part of the southern rock genre. Can't go wrong with any of the first five Lynyrd Skynyrd albums. But, I've been listening to 'Twenty' (1997) recently and it's pretty dang good!
1. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres 2. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' with Disaster 3. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd) 4. Black Oak Arkansas - High on the Hog 5. Blackfoot - Strikes 6. 38 Special - Wild-Eyed Southern Boys 7. Doc Holliday - Doc Holliday Rides Again 8. Outlaws - Outlaws 9. Point Blank - Point Blank 10. Potliquor - First Taste I would put Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers Band but I'm actually not a fan of either. Wet Willie and Little Feat I've never listened to.
Great list, yea I would give wet Willie and little feat a listen both have great studio albums throughout the 70s and have classic live albums imo. Little feat waiting for Columbus is a fantastic live album I would give it a listen as introduction
Great show Pete. I own or know well all the LPs you recommended with the exception of Blackfoot who I've been meaning to check out. I will definitely get around to it given your recommendation. While not worthy of a Top 10 Southern Rock Album slot due to lack of sales, one of my all-time Southern Rock LPs was the first Sea Level album (1977) which group included several former Allman Brother alumni. Sea Level didn't make it big, but they were very talented and exceptionally versatile. Chuck Leavell (keyboards, vocals) played a lot with Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones over the years as an unofficial band member on studio albums and part of the touring ensemble. Definitely worth a listen.
Point Blank? As much as i like 'free bird', i'd choose 'stars and scars' every time! Even their AOR albums were decent (great white line - outstanding track!). Cheers! 🎶
Though Skynyrd is my all time favorite band Wet Willie is the epitome of a Southern Rock. "Keep on Smilin" Leona" Grits Ain't Groceries" "Country Side of Life" Dixie Rock" "Shout Bamalama" It just don't get any more southern than those songs
1) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced... (1973) 2) Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach (1972) 3) ZZ Top - Tres Hombres (1973) 4) Marshall Tucker Band - S/T (1973) 5) Outlaws - S/T (1975) 6) Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Diaster (1979) 7) Blackfoot - Marauder (1981) 8) Copperhead - S/T 9) Atlanta Rhythm Section - A Rock And Roll Alternative (1976) 10) Charlie Daniels Band - Fire On The Mountain (1974) Honorable Mentions: .38 Special - Wild Eyed Southern Boys Doc Holliday - Rides Again Black Oak Arkansas - High On The Hog Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin' Black Crowes - Southern Harmony and Musical Companion Hydra - S/T
@@glenfinston704 Thanks Glen. But like Pete said there are so many other albums that I had to leave off, including the four Allman Brothers Band albums, the rest of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant era albums, as well as other ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band and Blackfoot albums.
@@christophercoles4401 Great list Christopher, I also like some great modern southern rock bands like blackberry smoke, you can pick any album by them I like Whippoorwill, find a light, and their latest Be right here. Also Allman Betts band really great band if you like Allman brothers band
Great show as always. Would love to hear that genre revitalized in this generation with this generation. I try and like Black Berry Smoke, but they tend to lean in a more of commercial country vibe. Charlie Starr is a great talent but not enough piss and vinegar. Raging Slabs first two releases are in the southern rock vein with some heavy.
I just can't get into tres hombres it's one of those album everybody loves but I just can't get into. But I'll never give up on it I'll give it another spin now after this
Picked up a cd by mule (not gov't mule) recorded at bear trap studios and its a gritty sounding album, bit like drive by truckers but dirtier! Are they still around in the US?
Born in GA, raised in Newburgh, NY Blackfoot - LOVE THEM 38 Special - they had a BIG sound and sizzling hot lead guitarists. Back Oak Arkansas - Race With the Devil Molly Hatchet started my Southern Rock journey. I liked Skynyrd.
One of my favorite genres here in the south of Europe! hahaha. Blackfoot's Marauder is the best for me from this bunch, although all are great. I couldn't really get into Charlie Daniels Band, too much fiddle. I'll try the album you mentioned. Skynyrd's first is such a tremendous album. I always listen to these bands in the summer, in the car.
I don't know if these bands are Southern bands or not Poco the amazing rhythm aces Ozark mountain dare devils he Band. New rider's of the purple sage maybe fireball the early eagles. Like you said there are a lot thanks for another great show
I really didn’t want anything to do with Southern anything when I was a kid. It wasn’t until I started to enjoy classic country and soul, that I understood.
My experience with southern rock mirrors yours. Better late than never! Currently buying up Marshall Tucker Band and Outlaws albums. Amazing musicianship from both bands (and all other bands Pete mentioned!) and love the storytelling and southern flavor takes me out of my urban landscape. Today's southern rock, like Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers and Turnpike Troubadors is killin' it - just awesome music!
The only thing I have a problem with when it comes to Molly Hatchet is their album covers make it look like they're an epic, Manowar/Manilla Road style US power metal band when that couldn't be further from the truth.
To be fair Molly Hatchet came before Manowar and Manilla Road and power metal. I love Molly Hatchet's album covers. No........ Molly Hatchet aren't power metal but who cares? Why does it have to be a power metal album to have a cool or epic album cover?
Here in Europe the southern rock they were not as popular as the rest of the styles. In America it was more popular and it's normal. I remember as a child at the end of the seventies, listening to "Blackfoot" a lot! But... the bands that created millions of southern rock fans here in Europe is the Lynyrd Skynyrd with the album "Pronounced 'Lĕh 'nérd 'Skin 'nérd" and the ZZ Top with the their first three/four releases! That's what I remember as a child then!
Lets make this Real easy, pick up any and all the bands mentioned in Charlie Daniels Band song " The South's Gonna Do It" , first track "B"side from the album " Fire on the Mountain", as well as the later bands you mentioned.
Pretty good list although I would jettison Almond Bros., Marshall Tucker and Charlie Daniels as they are too Country for my taste. and in their place put Point Blank “Second Season” ‘77 Hydra S/T ‘74, and Stillwater S/T ‘77 Honorable…Doc Holliday S/T ‘81
Exactly my point earlier. Just because you live in California, doesn't mean you can't make Southern Rock. They made some of the best Southern Rock to come out of El Cerrito ever!
@@impalaman9707 That's true, I don't limit SR by the geography of the band members either. But to me CCR is not a "Southern Rock" band - same with bands like The Doobies & Black Crowes. They certainly have Southern elements in their music but there's too much else going on besides SR
Pete, love your diversity. The Ozark Mtn Daredevils were and still are one of my favs.

Note i posted before Pete aired.. Without Byrds / New Riders / Burrito Bros there never would've been Southern Rock.. Even Greg Allman said that himself.. But we all got different opinions and that is fine.. Keeps it interesting..
Watching show.. HOW COULD I FORGOT BLACKFOOT.. Agree Pete.. That would have been one i would've chosen same with Black Oak..
Great selections I wholeheartedly approve!
@@glenfinston704 Thanks Glen.. Much appreciated.. Hope all is well.. Have a great weekend and week ahead.. All the best.. Rock On..
Charlie Daniels says ZZ Top is Southern Rock. That's good enough for me.
I lived in Jacksonville, FL for 30 years. I got to see alot of these groups at local clubs when they were working on new stuff. Several of the surviving members of Skynrd would come in to where I worked.
Bring it back alive, The Outlaws has been one of my favorites for 40 years.
Country rock sure, also just plain rock, classic rock, swamp rock, blues rock...Not Southern Rock to me though
I’m from the Great Southern Land (Australia) - love your Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
Agree about The ABB...they preferred "an improvising band from the South" over southern Rock. B&S, though, I agree with your comments. It's a very eclectic album. No Duane...but Chuck Leavell really adds a different vibe.
Greatly respect your content Pete the only thing I would change is Blackfoot Strikes over Maureder both great
Both very metal for southern rock
Nicely Done.👍
Ya got em all! Great job.
Point Blank with Johnny O on vocals !! Henry Paul Band,Blackfoot all ya need
Great picks, Pete. I'll add a more obscure choice - Artimus Pyledriver s/t album.
* ALLMAN BROS. Self-titled album.
Cry of Love first record is killer stuff! Too bad they faded
Toy Caldwell's songwriting was absolutely in the groove, and George McCorkle's one song, Fire On The Mountain, is a
masterpiece.
Agree pretty much any Marshall Tucker band albums in the 70s are amazing southern rock albums
@@tylerpatterson4787 70's Tucker is Gold! Also their 1981 Dedicated - but mostly their 70''s output
Hi Pete where do you put Blackberry Smoke
And thank all the other posters for their selections too sure will pick the bones out of them for future music and wine chill out afternoons ❤❤Sending love to you all 💕💕💕😘😘😘
For newer SR albums try this as a playlist:
The Brothers Bright/A Song Treasury
Caleb Johnson/Born From Southern Ground
Doc Holliday /Good Time Music
The Georgia Thunderbolts/Southern Rock From Rome
Ghost Riders/Five
Honey Island Swamp Band/Custom Deluxe, Good To You & Demolition Day
Hot Spring Water/Of A Morning
Laidlaw - s/t
Poco/The Wildwood Sessions
Sam Morrow/Gettin' By On Gettin' Down
Brothers and Sisters by The Allman Brothers Band is my favorite southern rock album of all time because of Jessica being on the video game Guitar Hero 2 if you remember that video game, Pete.
Whew! I was getting worried that Pete was going to leave out Blackfoot, and i was about to get SUPER mad.
The crazy thing is Tres, Hombres, Skynyrd Debut, and Brothers and Sisters were all released within a month of each other (July-Aug 1973
Amazing ...
...and The Marshall Tucker s/t album a couple of months earlier.
Excellent video,Pete👍
my favorite 2 bands are molly hatchet , blackfoot, heavy southern music
Its been mentioned in comments below, but that Henry Paul Band debut is stunningly stellar - essential purchase in every way!
ZZ Top - Deguello
Allman Bros - Eat a Peach
Lynerd Skynerd - Street Survivors
Good starter selection but one which I personally would include and didn't get a mention is Grinderswitch's 1974 album "Honest to Goodness"
Macon Tracks, Pullin' Together, Unfinished Business
A great rock channel
Can you do one for the blues or even blues rock?
Why not go with Blackfoot Strikes?
I've been thinking about Gary Rossington a lot lately and obviously he played a major part of the southern rock genre. Can't go wrong with any of the first five Lynyrd Skynyrd albums. But, I've been listening to 'Twenty' (1997) recently and it's pretty dang good!
Yeah nothing can touch their 70's output but from Twenty I liked 4 tracks: "Blame It On A Sad Song", "Sign Of The Times", "O.R.R" & "Never Too Late"
1. ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
2. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' with Disaster
3. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Black Oak Arkansas - High on the Hog
5. Blackfoot - Strikes
6. 38 Special - Wild-Eyed Southern Boys
7. Doc Holliday - Doc Holliday Rides Again
8. Outlaws - Outlaws
9. Point Blank - Point Blank
10. Potliquor - First Taste
I would put Marshall Tucker Band, Allman Brothers Band but I'm actually not a fan of either.
Cheers! 🎶
Excellent list, and very helpful!! Thank you, Pete!!
I'd give this episode a like just for the tee Pete is wearing! Turns out the clip deserved it on its own merit 🙂
2) Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach (1972)
3) ZZ Top - Tres Hombres (1973)
4) Marshall Tucker Band - S/T (1973)
5) Outlaws - S/T (1975)
6) Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Diaster (1979)
7) Blackfoot - Marauder (1981)
8) Copperhead - S/T
9) Atlanta Rhythm Section - A Rock And Roll Alternative (1976)
10) Charlie Daniels Band - Fire On The Mountain (1974)
Honorable Mentions:
.38 Special - Wild Eyed Southern Boys
Doc Holliday - Rides Again
Black Oak Arkansas - High On The Hog
Wet Willie - Keep On Smilin'
Black Crowes - Southern Harmony and Musical Companion
Hydra - S/T
Nice selections Chris! I agree!
@@tylerpatterson4787 I love all those bands too.
Stillwater had two great albums in the70s, the self titled debut and I Reserve The Right, both had extended guitar songs on them.
CBD -Fire on the Mountain
I just can't get into tres hombres it's one of those album everybody loves but I just can't get into. But I'll never give up on it I'll give it another spin now after this
Picked up a cd by mule (not gov't mule) recorded at bear trap studios and its a gritty sounding album, bit like drive by truckers but dirtier! Are they still around in the US?
Black Stone Cherry is another fantastic band
Nice Opeth shirt 👍🏻 Blackwater park?
Yep
Hey Pete what about the Georgia Satellites?
Born in GA, raised in Newburgh, NY
Blackfoot - LOVE THEM
38 Special - they had a BIG sound and sizzling hot lead guitarists.
Back Oak Arkansas - Race With the Devil
Molly Hatchet started my Southern Rock journey.
The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion
Should be in the starter pack imo
You nailed it..one one of my favorite albums of any genre
I thought about it...great album, but I'm giving everyone the basics first.
Why does it have to be a power metal album to have a cool or epic album cover?
could be', hmmm.......i just assumed that one or more members are frank frazetta fans?
Here in Europe the southern rock they were not as popular as the rest of the styles. In America it was more popular and it's normal. I remember as a child at the end of the seventies, listening to "Blackfoot" a lot! But... the bands that created millions of southern rock fans here in Europe is the Lynyrd Skynyrd with the album "Pronounced 'Lĕh 'nérd 'Skin 'nérd" and the ZZ Top with the their first three/four releases! That's what I remember as a child then!
Mostly Jtown Fla. but because The brothers moved to Macon Ga. it became the capitol of the genre.
It's a starter pack for someone new to this style of music. These bands have to be there. Most of these bands have country elements.
Hydra is a great/lesser-known band
Perfect picks pete !!!
Where do you put CCR ???
Exactly my point earlier. Just because you live in California, doesn't mean you can't make Southern Rock. They made some of the best Southern Rock to come out of El Cerrito ever!
@@impalaman9707 That's true, I don't limit SR by the geography of the band members either. But to me CCR is not a "Southern Rock" band - same with bands like The Doobies & Black Crowes. They certainly have Southern elements in their music but there's too much else going on besides SR
Nope, CCR not Southern rock.
Country rock.
I'm not into Southern Rock much, but I'll check out this show.
John Hyatt, Arc Angels, Traveling Wiburys, and of course, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
