Kings and Generals historical animated documentary series on the history of ancient civilizations and Ancient Greece continues with the first episode of our series on the Peloponnesian War, as we see how Athens and Sparta leading the Delian and Peloponnesian Leagues in one of the most brutal wars the ancient Hellenes fought. In the first video we talked about why and how the war started and described the siege of Potidaea in 432 BC ( • How and Why the Pelopo... ). The second episode talked about the siege of Plataea of 429-427 BC ( • Plataea 429-427 BC - P... ), while the third concentrated on the Battle of Pylos of 425 BC ( • Battle of Pylos 425 BC... ). The battle of Amphipolis 422 BC ended the Archidamian War with the Peace of Nicias ( • Battle of Amphipolis 4... ), but this was hardly the end as both the Athens and Sparta were eager to square off again, leading to the battle of Mantinea. We also talked about the famous Melian Dialogue, which is very important for the understanding of the ancient Greek thought ( • Battle of Mantinea 418... ). The lull in the war was followed by the Sicilian Expedition - possibly the greatest military disaster of Antiquity ( • Destruction of the Ath... ), and fearing the strengthening of Athens, Persians of the Achaemenid Empire started to support the Spartans financially.

The Sicilian Expedition may have been the turning point, but the war in the Hellespont was the reason why the Athenians lost.
Most Athenian food supplies came through the Hellespont, and being unable to compete with Persian gold, Athens would become seriously weakened.
It’s unfortunately Thucydides died before he could write about the final and most crucial stage of the war, but I’m glad you guys covered it!

You see so much of modern politics in history - alliances of convenience, trying to trade freedom for security, grabs for power during and causing upheavals, the "enemy of my enemy" approach to international relations.
Fantastic video (aka your normal quality).

Ironic how the tyrants, representing the elite, wanted to end the war, and the people, those who will really suffer the consecuences of war, wanted to keep going.

Pharabazus II, greatest Persian tactician of the 5th century. A Mardonius reborn, honorable and intelligent. Man served the King of Kings up into his 70’s.
His grandson served under Memnon of Rhodes regularly sacking Macedonian naval power during Alexander’s invasion.
His grandson would later serve in the successor wars successfully beating Hellenistic cavalry with his Iranic proto-cataphracts.
Edit: this video seemed to gloss over the probable use of Persian cavalry to check the Athenian pursuit after the route.
Thus, enabling the bulk of the Lacedaemonians to escape the battle.

Do not forget that the most precious book for the Greco-Romans, the Iliad, starts with the dispute between Achilles and Agamemnon that "led many a man to the jaws of Hades". Civil strife is written in the Greco-Roman dna.

I think the two civilizations are rather different. The romans didn't had that much civil wars, until they became a superpower and the power of generals became much greater than that of the senate.

      @TGeoMin 8 місяців тому +4

@@windwaker8985 When the Romans were pure Romans had no civil wars. When they became GrecoRomans at around the time of Ceasar (as a necessity to keep their 50% Greek empire working) they began the civil wars. I personally believe that the transition from Republic to Empire with god-emperors was a de facto Hellenization of the Romans. They had to become Hellenistic kings in order to keep that massive engine running.

Talk about Ancient Drama, this period was so chaotic and its really genius how you're able to provide a cohesive narrative in an entertaining manner. I have to say Alcibiades is a master 3D Chess player, I'm fully convinced he mastered the catastrophe in Syracuse and conveniently 'disappeared' just so he can appear in time and save the day (its fun to think of it that way at least) but seriously he's an inspiration as a political strategist.

Alcibiades’ life was one of the craziest stories in history. He pushed for the Sicilian expedition, then got removed from command for knocking the dicks off statues. He defected to Sparta, then cucked the Spartan king and defected again to Persia. Orchestrated multiple coups in Athens, and despite all of that, ultimately was welcomed back to Athens as a prodigal son.

Only one comment on the map (I'm a retired Cartographer), Byzantium should be Byzantion at this stage. The latin 'ium' came much later. The Romans were fighting everybody in Italy north, south and east and had no time to sniff around the Hellespont.

Maybe the Romans should have considered this when taking inspiration from Greek democracy 😅

Well, it's not just a Greek thing. Rivaling factions uniting against a foreign enemy is a common trope throughout history, while Athens and Sparta at the time had almost the same animosity with each other as with Persia (So, it is not any more Silly than modern States in an Alliance squabbling for their own gains). It is also a common component of frontism ideology, uniting anyone against a common enemy, abused by wanna-be tyrants and autocrats. "Well I would love to share my power, but right now we have to fight against X, so you must allow me at the top."

I enjoy every video, and appreicate that this series was released after being on patreon, but moving the regular uploads of the Pacific War after it going for a while to patreon only is scummy.

Explained our reasoning. It was two options. To cancel the series completely or move the standalone episodes away and then release them as long videos. Cancelling it was a worse option, in our opinion

It's surprising how amateurish the tactics of the Greeks were. Armies get smashed using simple tricks on a very small scale compared to later civilizations.

As a greek,i am so sad that Athens and Spartans made wars..
Now America USA(Athens) and Russia(Spartans) are making wars each other.
Russians have stronger infantry and vehicles, lower navy(such as Spartans). They haven't also so more allies(such as ancient Spartans).
From the other side,Athens was the boss country of Delian Alliance (USA are the Boss of NATO) and USA have bigger navy and lower infantry-tanks than Russia.USA also have more allies than Russia, such as the ancient spartans.
We know what will happen if we see the past..
Russia will defeat USA but now the things are little different, because Americans have more allies than Athenians...
