I have invisible disability (Fibromyalgia and autism) and non diagnosed dyspraxia. People don't ask me what is wrong with me but my neighbour asked my home help what was wrong with me, (in other words why I am not in work) even though he has seen me with my stroller.
People have asked. I tell them that the lawyer wouldn’t take my case. They are horrified and ask why? I say I didn’t have a leg to stand on. The don’t know quite what to do and laugh uncomfortably. Shift the focus and get a good laugh on them.

Hey Gem, I will openly admit I did claim compensation for an injury. I was already a wheelchair user at the time- not full time but getting progressively worse. I was at university studying a medical/ surgery type degree which was really making me I'll luckily my risk assessment said I could operate/ assist operate sat down on a sterile chair I was extremely lucky but as you know these don't provide the back support etc they are simply swivel stools in theatre if you remember from your c section.
My wheelchair use got increasingly more needing and I had no option but to stay in halls of residence for my own safety of having pull cords etc but having an adapted room with a full wet room and shower seat etc.
My shower seat was fixed to the wall but I hadn't paid much attention in my pained and exhausted state and after a couple of uses the shower seat came away from the wall while I was showering without carers to be independent and the screws went into my back, obviously the sudden drop onto the floor onto the base of my spine did no good but I literally had to pull the screws out of my back crying in pain I suddenly realised, they hadn't fitted any pull cords in my room which was the reason I had gone there. And I couldn't call for help. All the engineer had done was put an electric opening doors with a key fob. So I had to wrap a towel round me to soak blood up and try get a dressing gown and loose trousers and called security where a male security officer asked me to undress I said no I showed him a picture and demanded urgent medical attention with already a bad spine etc. He offered me a wait for it.... FINGER BANGAGE and said it would be ok. I got people to help get me to hospital and the hospital were mortified and didn't know what to do as I showed them a picture of the such dirty screws covered in my blood. I've scars running most of the length of my back that had to be dressed every day with specialist dressings as we don't heal well not moving much. My back is really an eye sore to look at. It was black and blue.
It lost my university career in surgery. I couldn't work. I so then had a large debt from student loans. I had to move back with my dad for help. And randomly shopping we saw a firm no win no fee blah blah and just showed the picture and said definitely you have a case.
I didn't get a lot. I didn't go to court and I didn't provide medical evidence. I couldn't have got a lot more than I did. It was only a few letters. BUT personally, I did it out of principle as they said it was my fault for not checking it to see if it was faulty. Really?! So I did it in principle so other people didnt go through the same and that they would realise people would take action against them. I do genuinely feel bad about doing it. But they've made my life so much worse than it could have been. And no-one was there to be my voice!
Sorry this was so long. I think there is a time and a place for "comp" and sometimes people need to know why

People have no filter when it comes to people with disabilities, they think it is our job to discuss every aspect of our lives.
Like I'm at stage I avoid people who knew me before as I can't deal with questions rofl
And they wonder why we get short-tempered with them...🤦Then they make out that WE'RE the rude one! 😤
Yeah your right. It STILL shocks me though when a stupid invasive question is thrown my way. But at lease I have my voice here, so ill had them a card from now on ;)
Before I asked anyone a question I stopped and think if I would want to be asked the question. Now that I have a disability I am glad I never asked those questions.

I’ve been following you for a while and it’s NEVER occurred to me to even wonder if you sued. Seriously...?!?!?! What is wrong with these people?!?!?! When I first heard your story, I thought “wow, I wonder how you coped at school”, “I wonder how your home life changed” “I wonder how your parents felt about what happened to you”.... etc I never wondered about compensation!!!! Good on you for addressing this!!! Shut up these rude people!!
Frances Coleman-Williams I completely agree. Closest I’ve ever even wondered was if she was mad at the doctors after she learned what happened
It's almost as if these people think that a lump sum of money would make it all 'worth it'. As Gem said, we have a LOT of expenses that able bodied people don't have (immediate and on-going), so a lump sum would help to offset it, but that money doesn't last forever (if you even got it!!) and it certainly doesn't make up for being disabled.
My solicitor gave me a good piece of advice, if you ever begin a sentence and then say but, stop there and don't go anywhere further.
I've never gotten this question, just because I use a wheelchair due to an illness that doesn't really have a cause, but I don't think I'd mind too much if I did. I feel like it mostly comes from a place of concern. That is, something happened to you, and they are hoping to hear that you weren't just left high and dry or that the person who "caused" this experienced some kind of repercussions for it. Some hope for justice done I guess. So to me it's less like "Hey how much money did you get, money is cool" and more "Did they have to pay for what they did and were you helped" kinda thing. But that's just me and I can still totally understand if other people think it's way too personal or inappropriate, so thanks for this perspective!
Kay Solo I think that’s how my friends were with me after my car accident. They asked in concern. As long as they weren’t asking how much money I was happy to answer. Asking how much is just darn rude but asking if it happened as in the person didn’t just get away with no care for you is ok I suppose.
I get asked it quite often... but I can’t really sue my parents/grandparents for giving me faulty genes, which is what is actually wrong with me - it just happened a lot quicker by being in hospital, in a bed for five months!

I'm not disabled due to an accident etc so I've never been asked this. However, if I had been I would find it okay for friends to ask me, but not strangers or acquaintances. The reason is because I feel there needs to be more openness about money. It's still seen as a taboo subject, which allows for lack of knowledge about disabled costs, and pay gaps etc.
I have had that once - weird as my spinal problem is MS and I told them that!! What is worse is that within minutes (literally) My phone rings and it's one of these ambulance chasing legal outfits. Argh!
Went to a gyno exam last week, for a regular testing. Had told the nurse before hand that I'm a wheelchair user.
Did she ask me if I could walk despite my papers being in front of her? Yes. Did she ask if I was born with my disability despite, AGAIN, my papers being in front of her? Yes.
Did she panic over the fact that I couldn't transfer over to a gyno... Chair ? 😂 Yes.
Did she try to compensate my NON tested body by telling me that "At least you must have strong arms". Yes. And um. Thanks? But what does my private area have to do with the fact that I'm strong..? 😂
Could I make the exam? Nope.
That annoyed ME, anyway.
Cecilia Berg That is unfortunately all too relatable. just a few weeks ago I was told I couldn’t come to the appointment if I couldn’t get on the table myself because I’m an endurance risk (I’ve been told that before, but not in a while). My appointment was put off for a while until my doctor could find a gyno who would examine me.
Hell yes. Ive been in the position, to which I replied "you can look at the notes." "OH I DONT HAVE TIME TO READ THE NOES!!!"

Ive found that nurses seem to fall into two categories, with no middle ground. They are either intelligent and competent or patronising useless morons.
@@Wheelsnoheels that’s something that annoys me. I don’t see the same specialist Registrar twice and they ask for my history each time. I also have speech problems that make it hard to hold long conversations before my voice gives up so at my last appointment I asked how far do you want me to go back because the initial incident that triggered my knee problems happened 35 years ago and I’ve had 6 surgeries. The Dr then said he only wanted to know about the last 12 months. Why didn’t he say that in the first place then?
My disabilities are hereditary. Who am I meant to sue to get compensation?
I became disabled when I was fairly young and the first domino to fall was a botched surgery. Unfortunately, my case is too complex to say without doubt what would've happened had that surgery gone well, due to other underlying issues it is possible I could've developed similar symptoms anyway (though incredibly unlikely). I also can't afford to sue. Same as you, the moment I mention that a surgery went wrong, people ask if I sued. I appreciate it can come from a good place of having justice, but it also brings up the fact that I can't again and again.
I agree with you. It's nobody's business if you got compensation or not. It's too invasive of a question. It's like asking them how much their last paycheck was for.
My girlfriend (who is in a wheelchair following a car accident of which she was the victim) thinks this question is highly inappropriate to ask. I have to agree! Someone’s finances are none of your business, so nosy!!
That is definitely a very rude question. I use a wheelchair due to chronic pain from my bone disease and I also wear bracing on my legs and other extremities. For some reason when people see me the first thing they ask is "When did you get in that car accident?" Or I also get "You're to young to have those issues." *insert face palm emoji*

It’s amazing what people think they can ask. I have had a taxi driver ask me if I was single or not. He then asked me if I think it’s due to my disability that I am single!!! Thanks mate!!!!
I have never been asked this and my need to use a wheelchair was caused by medical error. The only time I've had to deal with it was when needing other surgeries as a result and I had to fill in forms for insurance to decide if they should try and get someone else to pay (the damage occurred in the UK, but I had some surgery in the US). To be fair I really don't tell my story very often, I don't even know if my best friends know and I really hope my children don't know as that's one of the main reasons I keep it very quiet. I just say I have an underlying condition and had an injury that was worse because of it, few people know that injury happened in hospital giving birth.

I remember after my Father passed away when I was 20 from a sudden massive heart attack (nearly 20 years ago), people would ask me if I was going to receive an inheritance (he owned a large local business), and it was SOOOOOO extremely rude.
I didn't, everything went to my Mother, like it should. They'd been married for 34 years and together for almost 40 years (H.S. Sweethearts- she's still never dated, and is 73 now).
It's so crazy what people will say/ask, etc.
I swear people have just forgotten about human decency and respect nowadays!

Compensation/damage claim/ claim on x persons insurance- I don’t think it’s the worst thing to ask. I was in a car a car accident and friends/people know asked me and I was happy to reply (yes/no) As long as people aren’t asking how much I would answer. But you could always say I’d rather not discuss that.
I was born with spina bifida and I am in an electric wheelchair. I can’t tell you how many times people have assumed that the US government pays me enough money to pay for all of my medical, nutritional,& daily living needs!!!!!(JSYK they ABSOLUTELY DO NOT 💸)
Ahahaha, I love the theme song! I'm in a power chair due to long time illness, the question I get the most is "can I hitch a ride on your chair?" Ha. Hahaha. Very clever.
Christopher Reeve, after becoming paralyzed from the neck down from being thrown from a horse, spoke about the need for catastrophic insurance and raising the lifetime cap on the amount to be paid out over a lifetime. Due to his injury, he needed round the clock care, his home had to be modified for a electric wheelchair, the monitors, oxygen, special bed to prevent bedsores, not to mention the therapists & therapy to keep his body from atrophying. He said if he didn't have excellent insurance, he & his family wouldve been bankrupted by his injury
I use an array of different mobility equipment (frames, stick, wheelchair). If I'm using my wheelchair, I often get asked "why are you using that today". I even had a family member see my walking frame in the house (because round the house I just tend to use the walls a lot so the frame we just "sitting there") & say "do you have that to practice your walking". And because I don't use my wheelchair all the time, I've had other people in wheelchairs give me "looks"....."I know you can walk, you don't REALLY need that".

I am new to your channel and I just love the ones I've watch so far. I'm a T9 complete. When I was 16, the horse I was ridding reacted to a rattlesnake, throw me, and can down on my back. Occasionally, after tell my sorry, I will get the compensation question. First of all, people, weren't you listening? I will just say, " I tried suing the horse, but he said neigh."
I once asked this when I had a sprained/broken ankle due to my EDS. I explained to my work colleagues that I had gone to stand up from a seat n a tour bus and just went over on my ankle and that it wasn't caused by anything in my environment. One of them asked if I could get compensation, and I asked him how I could get compensation against myself. What a moron.
I must admit, as a "Bornie", that I assume that those who are quads or paras as the result of accidents and have expensive wheelchairs etc have had some kind of compo. I wish I'd have thought of it when Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton screwed up my knees. It has hampered my life since I was 5-6. But we did not have a lot of money when I was a kid, so I just had to get on with life with permanently straight legs. 🤦 And since the government made it (deliberately) harder to get Legal Aid, I doubt it will get any better in the future.
Ah man that sucks. Im in the same position as you. I can't speak for every one and I tend not to ask the question as I hate it myself, But I'm pretty sure not everyone gets the compensation you think.

what really really upsets me as a wheelchair user myself is the assumption that many people make is that because of my being in a wheelchair I have no right to an opinion or any intelligence. its upsetting and disrespectful also I use a transit chair and many even those who clearly know I have no use in my left hand assume I can propell myself. forward I would spend all day spinning in a circleI i tried using one. don't you agree great channel by the way I became disabled in 2012 and lost use of my left arm and leg.
Another fun one is when you get hurt at work, and you get coworkers telling you that there were people who were trying to destroy the evidence of the accident, that you should sue the company, that you should milk it for all it's worth and stay out as long as possible.

I am not disabled nor have I asked the question. However, I do know, as an American, we talk about suing a lot. I’m not sure if that goes for everywhere, but in the states, you can say anything even remotely minorly inconvenient, and someone will say “sue ‘em.” I’ve never heard a question of injury compensation asked, but it is definitely something Americans would do. We talk about money and court and divorce and a whole list of other things that every other country deems taboo all the time, and you laugh about injury compensation making news headlines, but I can totally see that coming up on U.S. televisions. Btw, I’m not saying anyone *should* ask it, I’m just revealing Americans’ ignorance.

I’m generally very open about my disability and how it affects me, but I think everything is really down to personal preference and comfort when it comes to questions from people. For some the reason of a disability can be very traumatic and something the person just wants to put behind them in an effort to focus here and now, for others it’s no big deal or at least nothing traumatic. My disability is not traumatic at all, I just happened to be born with EDS and happen to be affected by it in such a way that it is requiring me to use a wheelchair to get around. I tend to be quite open about the financial situation as well, as it’s a way to raise awareness for how difficult it is to rely on disability benefits as they don’t follow the development at all when it comes to income vs living costs.
But asking someone about compensation is rather rude tbh, especially if not knowing the person. It’s no one’s business unless maybe if it’s between two people with similar stories and one went for compensation and the other is considering doing the same... But for average Joe with the pigeon poop on his jacket, it’s none of his business
I hate being asked if I can walk faster. If you want to be picking me up off the floor. Why would someone ask if you get compensation? That is just rude and none of their business.
people have asked me then i tell them i was born this way and its degenerative i wasn't always this way my body got to this point. tbh idk whats worse losing the ability to do things without a mobility aid from birth never knowing what it was like not to have it or losing the ability after knowing that it is unavoidable and you just have to push until your body just cant keep up anymore.
I done my application for my first wheelchair yesterday. I'm slightly worried but also very excited. I've been using a walker since the start of the year, and will use it when I can. I've not had much issues with people and my walker so far.
Had one older gentleman tell me I should be pushing a babe in it. Don't think he grasped the concept of a walking aid, while he was using a stick. Doh.
I was in a wreck in 2004 and broke my spine and had to be fused from T12-L5. Than in 2017 I was hit by a car and broke my left leg at the Tib,Vib at the knee, and shattered my knee. Had to be recontracted which caused my right hip to be affected, because I wasn't able to put any weight on it for 2 months. I use a cane all the time and a chair if I have to walk a long distance and time. Get asked that so much I've lost count.
Unfortunately some people just can't help themselves, only think of the money side of the injury not the ongoing costs and pain.

Richard Davis I don’t think it’s always about the money. Some people ask out of concern that someone wasn’t left high and dry. They don’t all want the amount of money told to them they are just interested that you got something so a yes or no answer will be good enough. So by answering YES they may say that’s good. Or by answering NO they may just say that’s a shame or shame on the person thou caused the accident. So it’s not always people wanting to know how much money but just that you got something for the troubles you have faced and will face.
Its also not appropriate to ask about benefits and things like motability unless there’s a valid reason (i.e. seeing if they’re getting everything they’re entitled to). I’ve had conductors on trains make comments about me being lucky for having a disabled railcard
I tell people I fell of a back of a train when they ask, that keeps them quite very quickly.

I have a connective tissue disorder and get invasive questions about it constantly (especially when I'm using mobility aids) and once someone asked me if it was terminal and it was super awkward (it's not terminal)

This is really interesting for a lot of different reasons, for a person "across the pond" in the US. I do believe people first wonder what led me to be in a chair. My condition is genetic, so that kinds of prevents the compensation question. I get offered horribly offensive advice such as, "So then why did you have kids?" because my kids have this too (the answer is convoluted, but I didn't know I had this when I had them). In the US, the question to you would be more like a statement such as, "Well I hope you sued them and got a lot of money!" The system works a little differently here in that if a person or business or whatever has wronged you, and you win your case, they have to pay your court fees. So you do stand to get money, but then it goes back to your example, basically that there is never enough money to compensate you for this type of loss, and being disabled is very expensive. Also, actually getting compensation can prevent you from getting benefits from other programs. Another thing I run into here is people "assuming" I get everything free. There are a lot of social programs in the US to compensate those who struggle, but it's very individual based on your disability, what town or city or state you live in in the US, and whether or not you received compensation of some sort. But I digress. Basically, your point that it's rude to ask is spot on. My birthday was yesterday and I had a long time friend send me a birthday card which basically asked me all kinds of questions about my chair. SMH

You tell your "friends" : For the same reasons you had kids. No one asks THEM why they have kids in their own image - so why ask us??? 😱 🤦 😤 Besides, we have the experience of dealing with it ourselves, so we are better prepared. 😜

I’ve been in a few situations in hospital when I could have sued for things. But in New Zealand because tax payers pay for the countries healthcare it’s not so common unless it involves death. Mine were stuff like a nurse I didn’t know was training was outing my ng tube in and it was too big but she forced it in and damaged my nasal passage and throat (I was in agony when she did it) and another time I had a shower at the hospital and was done so I puked the cord and no one came in for 20 minutes. I could have been someone on the floor unable to get up. But when I tell people about these types of things they ask if I sued

I’m in a wheelchair due to a hereditary neurological disease and I get asked that question because doctors gave me medications unknowingly that progressed my condition right into a wheelchair. I always feel uncomfortable and backed into a corner defending my decision not to sue.
I get asked very often also but I got hit by a car when i was 12. So of course i get asked if the girl that hit me got sued. It's a long story but she got away with it. So anyway.. it gets annoying.

Thankfully I haven’t had too many comments or questions,the compensation one doesn’t apply to me (genetic condition) but one comment that has stuck in my mind and on the surface amused me but actually on a deeper level it kind of upset me.i was fiddling around getting myself into the wheelchair spot on the bus when an older lady said ‘I don’t know how YOU people do it’ there wasn’t any nastiness in her statement but really, ‘YOU people???!’
The most hurtful and upsetting thing ever said to me wasn’t about wheelchair use but about disability (and at the time it was not known that my condition was both progressive and genetic), I was newly pregnant with my first and like all first time mums to be I had anxieties and due to being chronically ill and disabled (much less disabled then I am now and at the time no reason to think I would be as disabled as I am now... not that it even matters) but this woman told me that, and I directly quote ‘people like you shouldn’t be allowed to have children.’ Even though I knew then and now it was utter bullshit it hurt so much, I went through a lot to have my kids. They are now 14 and 11, great kids, kind, caring and understand disability. I think I have done a pretty good job, the last 5 years I have done it as a single parent as my condition rapidly progressed. My children absolutely should be here, the world is a better place with them in it and people like that woman need to keep their mouths shut.

Wow, that's not even something I would have thought of to ask. Maybe it's a cultural thing, I'm aussie like your husband. People are really weird. I do have a friend who may be receiving compensation for a life changing injury, but only know about it because she chose to discuss it with me, we were close when the event occurred.
My broken back was thru Domestic Violence. So, 'NO" I did not. I won't tell my story. I don't need to per me and my therapist.

I suspect that people feel, that if I’m open enough to tell you how I got disabled , then surely asking about $$ is far less and surely accepted.
There are many advertisements on TV and billboards from lawyers asking if you've been in an accident and they'll advocate for you and get compensation... This adds to the false stereotype that wheelchair users are weak that needs defending and are victims

I had a road traffic accident and get asked constantly did you get compensation? And I usually say yes bc I'm proud that I did. I don't think people should ask but people are curious, I guess
To add to this the main compensation I got was for my car, I go none for the injuries, I suffered and the mental impacts it had. I was a learner driver at the time and had only been driving a few months and had an accident which was totally not my fault and this was established in court.
Money doesn't compensate.

The few times anyone has asked me this question I've just smiled and replied, "Does it actually matter? How much are your legs & 'normal' functions of your body worth to you? Because to me they are priceless....."
This would have been about the last question it would occur to me to ask. If you told me the story, I'd probably ask you how a surgeon could be so ham-handed, but compensation would not give you back your mobility.
I can understand how it feels overly invasive to ask about finances. A lot of people in the comments are expressing that financial compensation wouldn't make a person "better"
When I first heard that you became disabled after a botched surgery, I did wonder if you sued the hospital. It seems to me, and probably a lot of other people, that if the surgeon hurt you and you now need to buy things (wheelchairs, ramps, etc) because of something that is the hospital's fault (aka improperly handled surgery), they should compensate you. Because generally one thinks that these sorts of actions must have consequences; in that way, it's almost scary to think that they didn't help you.
Maybe when some people are asking you about compensation, they want to hear about the money and that is rude. When I first had the thought "did you sue," it was more "was the hospital held liable for their mistake"
I guess the way "did you get compensation" and "did you sue" are phrased suggests different intent?
Would you also consider the alternate question rude?
I can also understand just not liking to have this discussion frequently because it's not particularly pleasant, which is a different issue

I think people should never ask each other money related things, unless you are helping them with their taxes or something. I also think that able bodied people should try to develop the ability of getting to know someone (anyone) without bringing the person’s medical history into it. Talk to them about something else a lot less personal. Especially if the two people are virtual strangers in the same shop or something, it’s ok to comment on the weather. That is an appropriate subject between two people who don’t know each other. ☔️ ❄️ ☀️

When I was younger I and told someone I was telling I live with Spina Bifida, that individual responded 'I thought they could get rid of you people by now?' At the time I was in my 20s and at time I was born they didn't know that must about my impairment.

They've done a "good job" of getting rid of us, but now there's in-utero surgery, more of us are being allowed to live. Thankfully there was no screening before I was born, so I escaped. But had I been born a few years later, Mum would have opted not to have me. We argued about it years back, but I do understand what a stress it was for them, with so little information or support - especially from doctors who tried to talk her into giving me up. "Go home and try again" was common back then. 🤷

I honestly dont think its polite, I could understand if it was say your cheap deals gossip friend that you discuss prices of things with and like money stuff or maybe if someone says they're looking into seeking compensation themselves, but otherwise like..... why? Why you need to know?

(I’ve been on and off in a wheelchair during my life btw, also have a step dad who was in a car accident and did in fact get compensation so I’m not speaking on this for no reason) I don’t think it’s super rude. Not exactly people’s business but there are way worse to be asked and I think in perspective it really isn’t that bad.
Its all personal. To me it is rude and I don't like it. But everyone is different.
