- Interview with ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin, on September 17, 2023 at the National Theater in Belgrade a few hours before the Sergei Polunin Foundation's humanitarian event - a gala fundraiser for this Foundation, which sponsors the education of young talented ballet artists in Serbia. Interviewed by Marija Mićanović with RT Balkan. (I made a few edits to the video, for aesthetic and other reasons, but the full content of the interview is included.)

Sergei Polunin won over fans of ballet with his performances with almost all the biggest ballet ensembles. The tattooed James Dean of the ballet scene, at only 19 years old, became the youngest premier of the London Royal Ballet in the history of this company. Born in Ukraine, he performs all over Russia and does not hide that he lost many engagements because of Vladimir Putin's tattoo. Specially for RT Balkan, he also reveals why freedom is inviolable, as well as why "the roads to China and India seem interesting to him".
Who is Sergei Polunin, the tattooed prince of dance?
As with any big star, you expect him to be a little late. But this was not the case with Sergei Polunin - he quietly entered greeted the audience and patiently answered questions. We did the interview a few hours before the humanitarian event of the "Sergei Polunin" Foundation, which collects funds for the education of talented ballet artists in Serbia.
Dressed head to toe in black, he seemed to "blend in" with the dark scenery, but his clear blue eyes and school attitude spoke for themselves. He was not bothered by the bells from the neighboring building, nor the constant ringing of the phone, he was concentrating on the answers, yet so calm and relaxed.

I respect Sergei Polunin and his family. I respect all people of Russia. I hold a great liking and respect for all Vaganova dancers and teachers, all Russian dancers from other ballet companies; and everyone else for that matter. I definitely wish everything goes well for all Russians. Including, Svetlana Zacharova, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Nina Kaptsova, Maria Alexandrova, Evgenia Obraztsova, Valery Gergiev, Mikhail Lobukhin and my favourite 'Maria Khoreva'. And the list goes on. Sergei comes across as a decent straightforward down to earth guy who clearly has a great relationship with his wife, they support each other and he is also a phenomenal dancer and I just love him. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

Oh my GOD he's GORGEOUS!! I became a fan of ballet after I watched the movie "Dancer"....2 weeks ago😂🤣😆🤣. I looked into what Ballet was coming to Seattle. It will be "Sleeping Beauty" and if will be here in late Fall. I was so excited to buy tickets. I got online and got out my credit card, found the ticket place and then....I think my heart literally stopped. The cheapest tickets were $265!😲Times 2 =$530!!🤢... Looks like I'm going to be watching Ballet on UA-cam while I save money for NEXT YEAR!
Sorry you won’t be able to afford to see a live ballet yet. Yes, I’d say that seems a pretty a steep price for tickets! 😵💫

I'm so glad that I saw Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Albert Hall in December 2019. It may be that Sergei works far from 'the west' forever more. Very sad for us in the west. So many things are sad just now, but we must go on.

It was after the pandemic and just before everything changed. Then I went to see Natalia Osipova in Kenneth Macmillan's Romeo and Juliet at the ROH in January 2022 but she did not dance. Marianela Nunez stood in and she was wonderful. Then the Siberian Ballet with their orchestra had all of their dates cancelled and had to go home. I have not been to a performance since. Artists being cancelled makes me feel uneasy.@@IndiaInk

Yes, he’s married to Elena Ilinykh, who he has been with since 2019. Elena is an Olympic champion in ice dancing. They have 3 children and they seem very happy together.
Sergei credits Elena with giving him love, stability, and with helping support him through difficulties over the past few years, including helping motivate him to return to dancing after his Achilles tendon injury in 2022.
I don’t know why anyone who has seen how troubled Sergei was in Dancer (filmed around 2013-2015) would be upset to hear that he has found this kind of love and support and that they have created a family together.
But it’s not just her supporting him, Sergei has supported her artistic talents as well. He directed a music video (Sia “Music”) starring Elena, and has created several roles for her in his dramatic dance productions and loves dancing with her.
I have several montages of them together on my channel and pictures of their family on my community tab if you change your mind and decide you want to see how they are with each other.
