- Ballet dancer, actor, and director of the Sevastopol State Opera and Ballet Theater, Sergei Polunin speaks about the Russian tour of his dramatic ballet Rasputin, why for many years he did not look people in the eye, why other artists sometimes do not want to work with him, and about his support of President Vladimir Putin. [ *ENGLISH SUBTITLES AVAILABLE!* Select the ⚙icon.] A surprisingly personal interview with Sergei Polunin on November 8, 2022 before his Rasputin performance in Krasnador. ** Because this interview includes a brief discussion about Sergei’s view of Putin, and I’ve seen many fans over the past 9 months confused by his position, I wanted to share some thoughts here, hoping it will help those who don't understand how a kind-hearted person like Sergei who wants peace for the world could have a moral reason to support Putin or the current Russian military action Ukraine.
*PLEASE NOTE: I’m not trying to debate or prove a position, only trying to provide information many of his fans may have never heard or considered before. Nothing I am sharing here is meant to negate the valid reasons people have for supporting Ukraine. In the interest of time and word count limits, I’m not counter-acting these statements with explanations for the pro-Ukrainian position. This pinned comment is meant for the people confused by Sergei’s views who are confused BECAUSE they are already aware of the Stand With Ukraine perspective.* And, while I've tried to create a decent summary of the situation, it's impossible to include every important detail or to explain to anyone's (including my own) complete satisfaction. Which is why I've included links at the end for further exploration of the topic for those interested.
* Whether you agree with his actions or not, regardless of the cartoon villain many media outlets try to reduce him to, President Vladimir Putin is not a madman and this war has roots that go back much farther than February 2022. Over the past couple of decades ambassadors and political advisors in the West repeatedly predicted and warned their leaders that continuing their geopolitical course, especially regarding NATO expansion, would lead to war with Russia. Political leaders in the West, especially the USA, pursued this course of action anyway, going as far as to deliberately set an inevitable war in motion with their direct involvement in the violent “regime change” of Ukraine’s government in 2014, which led to a predictable civil war in Ukraine as areas of Eastern Ukraine (the part of the country Sergei Polunin is from) rejected the change. [ *A 2019 Rand report details the USA's deliberate intention to foment unrest and outright war in Ukraine with the ultimate goal of destabilizing and antagonizing Russia. See link below.* ]
People of these areas of Eastern Ukraine, (where a majority of the population is culturally, linguistically, and ethnically Russian), especially in the region of the Donbass, objected to the economic impact they saw joining the EU would have on Ukraine, and they objected to people who celebrated Nazi leaders and ideology taking power and the policies they were implementing against the Russian-speaking population, including laws being passed removing Russian as an official language. While their resistance included acts of violence, they also had people who tried to influence change through peaceful protests and demonstrations. (During one significant event in Odessa in May 2014, many Ukrainian protesters were brutally killed after their protest was broken up by an armed, militia-led mob who chased the protesters into a government building. The building was then set on fire and 42 people were burned alive, or shot or beaten to death after they leapt out of windows to try to escape. Hundreds more were injured. No one was ever charged for these murders.)
Despite various talks and peace agreements made since then, the war between the people of the Donbass and forces of Ukraine has continued for the past 8 years. And due to the frequent shelling of civilian areas, according to UN sources, more than eleven thousand civilians in the Donbass have been maimed or killed in this ongoing war. The people of the Donbass originally fought to gain a measure of autonomy in Ukraine and a voice in the government, but after nearly 9 years of war with said government, they have turned their hopes for peace toward becoming a part of Russia.
You can agree or not with their cause, with their interpretation of events, or with Russia’s past or present involvement or intervention in all this. And you can agree or not with the belief that the world should have a balance of global power, that there should be a “multi-polar” world rather than one nation with an arsenal of nuclear weapons and a global military presence setting the rules for the rest of the world to follow (which is a large part of what the war in Ukraine is about, however much the people who are fighting for, or standing with Ukraine might be, on a personal level, fighting for that country).
But if you’re a fan of Sergei's and have struggled to understand how Sergei can take the position he has, aligning with those in Eastern Ukraine (where he is originally from) who have been fighting the Ukrainian government the past 8 years, out of his desire for peace and balance in the world, it’s important to recognize there is a side to this war and a history behind it which you may have not yet heard.

Yes. I've been thinking about Sergei and how he's doing. He's doing fine. Thank for posting this interview. Sergei's view of Putin is similar to many in Ukraine, Russia and over the globe. What people may not know or forget is Putin is a lawyer, he's very legalistic. There is no cult of personality around Putin, Russians don't put pictures of him everywhere on their walls, but they respect him. As one Russian man said, "Putin is not a woman to be praised." He's the leader of his country, more liberal than many who are around him so the west better be careful what they wish for.

Мне тоже пришлось 8 месяцев назад потерять троих бывших друзей. И так стало легко, да и всё встало на свои места. Видимо, подошло время сделать такой выбор.
It can be difficult to lose people you care about due to differences in values and beliefs. And people do seem to be faced with making these types of choices more and more often these days... it takes courage to stand for what you believe, regardless how many people will stand with you.

Regarding the "information" about Sergei in my pinned comment: UA-cam provides a "translation" feature on comments for some users, but it seems not everyone has access to this feature. Thanks to Sergei's many Russian fans, most of my viewers and commentors are from Russia or are Russian speakers, like yourself, but I don't yet know enough Russian (I am learning it, just very slowly!) to provide any text without the help of Google Translate, so can't guarantee an accurate translation of what I wrote.
However, my very long pinned comment on this video was primarily intended for English-speaking audiences, as many of them who still love Sergei do not understand his support of Putin or of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine. Will the current conflict in Ukraine somehow end up in stalemate - - but without resort to World War 3? I believe this war will end soon - - quite. And I'd like to see Polunin dance in various countries in the world again - - like he used to - - and I wish the same indeed - - for the many other Russian dancers i.e. Zacharova & Khoreva & Alexandrova & Novikova to name but a few. Yes, the whole situation in the world is very tense, difficult, and alarming for anyone following the events. I do hope we can see peace and a place for people from all around the world to be able to share our culture and art with each other. And, of course, to see Sergei and other dancers able to dance freely around the world. I also admire Sergei's honesty and strength of character. And I'm grateful if anything I wrote or linked gives people a fuller picture of the situation, regardless of which side of the issue they support.

I agree with Sergei. Being taken advantage of is not nice, but it is they who will suffer the greater humiliation when they know all. That Sergei gives with his heart, and it shows in his dance, his reward will be great, just like him.

6 августа 2000 года батюшка Николай благословил одну приехавшую к нему монахиню книгой «Мученик за Христа и за Царя. Человек Божий Григорий. Молитвенник за Святую Русь и Ея Пресветлого Отрока», со словами: «Храни. Это чудесная книга, благодатная».
Эта монахиня в присутствии других духовных чад батюшки спросила:
- Скажите, как вы чувствуете, как вам Господь открывает, прославят когда-нибудь мученика Григория?
- Матушка, так он уже давно прославлен, - ответил отец Николай Гурьянов.
- Отче, я понимаю... Прославят ли на Соборе архиерейском у нас, в России?
- Я думаю, прославят. Этого Царственные Мученики желают, и многие духовные люди в нашей Церкви хотят этого. Вы молитесь, просите Господа, и будет радость для всех огромная - правда откроется. ...
- Батюшка, отчего так скорбит Цесаревич? - спросила монахиня и протянула ему икону.
- А как же не скорбеть? Какие поношения, оскорбления он видит на Царя, Царицу и на старца Григория. Алексий знает его святость как никто другой, ведь сколько раз праведный Григорий его спасал от смерти, сколько раз... Помолится, перекрестит его, благословит. Ведь Григорий это чудо творил старец Григорий по милости Божией исцелял! А о нем такие глупости говорят!
- Отче, мне сказали, что была передача по «Радонежу», беседу вел священник, почитающий Царственных Мучеников. Когда его спросили именно об этой способности старца Григория - исцелять Наследника - он ответил, что Распутин лечил его как экстрасенс... Батюшка, что же это такое? Снова ложь?
- А вы знаете этого священника? - спросил отец Николай.
- Нет, только бывала несколько раз в храме на его службе и читала его проповеди...
- Вы ему от меня, тоже священника, любящего Царственных Мучеников, задайте вопрос: «А что они, старец Григорий и Царица Александра, вместе «колдовали»?! Грешно так говорить о Григории и об Императрице! Она духовно прозорлива была и видела сердца людей. Видно, тот священник себя выше и умнее Царя и Царицы считает?
- Не знаю, отче, просто он всегда говорит о Григории Ефимовиче страшные вещи, смеется над его святым житием: иронизирует, что святой Царь Николай преобучался Иисусовой молитве от Старца Григория...
- Как грешно! Это священник так говорит?!
- Да... простите...
- Царь Николай имел великую силу Иисусовой молитвы, и именно она, молитва эта, давала Ему духовный разум и Божественную мудрость, просвещала Его сердце и направляла, вразумляла, как поступить. А молитва Мученика Григория спасала Царевича столько раз от смерти, исцеляла... Ведь молился Григорий за Русь - и его Господь слышал...
Разговор прервался. Вспомнились клеветнические публикации о Григории Ефимовиче Распутине, «просветительские» передачи о нем по «Радонежу». Ничего светлого, правдивого, одна брань и хула, перепевы масонских книг и пересказы «свидетелей» жизни Старца Григория, его убийц. И все это внушают доверчивым людям и не дают опомниться, задуматься и самим, с Божией помощию, попытаться найти истину...
- Так значит, отче, прославят его?
- А вы посмотрите, что у вас в руках?
- Икона мученика Григория с Цесаревичем Алексием...
- Вот уже и прославили... Смотрите, иконочка ему есть, акафист написан, молитва. Мы уже молимся ему, и многие молились и молятся...
- Батюшка.... Архиереи за это будут на нас серчать...
- За что? - спросил он. - Мы с вами их ничем не обидели и не обижаем.
- За то, что мы мученика Григория славим, святым почитаем.
- То, что мученик Григорий святой - это правда Божия. За правду нельзя серчать и архиереи это понимают.
