  • How did "20 Mule Team Borax" come to be a household name for more than a century? The company, of course, used long line teams of mules to haul borax from Death Valley. But in their day they were simply called "big teams" or "long line teams" because there was nothing special about 20 mule teams. There were 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and longer teams of mules all over the west. But using Death Valley as a means to sell soap was a unique idea created by Stephen Mather, who later went on to become the first director of the National Park Service. Though the promotion of 20 Mule Team Borax took place in several places in the Mojave Desert none was more important than Death Valley. Tourism in Death Valley depends largely on the hotels and accommodations built in later years by Pacific Coast Borax. This is the story of how some mules pulling giant wagons became an icon in popular culture and a mainstay of American ingenuity and advertising.
