    "Hit the ground running" is indeed the correct English idiom. To be perfectly honest, you speak better English than a lot of Americans I know.

      Oh definitely I attest to that. Its party coz here in the States we speak American not English lol. btw I'm still waiting for the day we switch over to metric.

      The famous TV show "Mythbusters" tested whether one could 'hit the ground running' and found out after many failures, it could not be done. Although the idea of doing it is sound.

    I have had a hunch for ten years or more I was not using my DRO to it's potential. Now I know for sure 😀 Excellent explanation of the feature. Being a repairman and not being a production machinists or one who rarely makes more than one part of anything I never bothered to delve into the more advanced features. Maybe someday I should, if simply just for the exercise and learning.
    Cheers

    Hi Stefan,
    I saw this video come in earlier, alas! I had to do some work....
    Just watched, and YES once again very entertaining. I had never thought of using the DRO, to advise position of a set of favorite tool, but great idea.
    Short yes, but certainly not lacking in information.
    Thank you.

    That method almost demands making a few hardened and ground step gauges that could be used for custom shaped HSS lathe tools while doing one off jobs Stefan. Especially when needing to reuse a tool holder with an already known tool off set. I still can't believe just how quiet that geared head lathe is every time I hear it. High quality and precision made machines have an operating sound and feel to match there price level.

    I often prefer to take my cut, then a spring pass before measuring so that I have an idea of what my dimension is with less tool pressure (in steel at least) and go from there, any downsides you could see from doing it this way?
    Thanks for the video, hopefully the next one isn't far behind!

    Hi Stefan, why do you have the lathe Z axis scale connected to Y axis on the DRO? Also, why not use both X and Z offsets for the tools?

  • @selfdestructint
    @selfdestructint 5 років тому

    Very useful info, I'm about to buy some new scales, but I think I'm going to head down the TouchDRO route, have you heard of it? It can use pretty much any linear scale and it interfaces with any android phone or tablet and is apparently very configurable. Should be fairly straight forward with your arduino experience.

    To me, the arrow keys on these import DRO's work backwards. The Right or Up arrow key cycles SDM 4, 3, 2, 1, and the Left or Down arrow key cycles SDM 1, 2, 3, 4. This is very counter intuitive to me and very annoying. Do you (or anyone) know if or how to change this behavior on these units? Thank you

    • @JaakkoF
      @JaakkoF 4 роки тому

      Typically you can set this in the parameters so that the DRO shows either linear measurements or interpretes it as radius and shows it as a diameter on the readout.

      Yes, something like a 1440 would be to much for what I do - I used to use a Weiler Condor 81 at work a bit for small parts and I disliked it a lot. Heavy, large toolholders, everything is far more distance to move your hands, the tailstock weights a ton, etc.

    You should look into TouchDRO from Yuriy's Toys. It's a small circuit board that the scales are connected to, which then connects to a tablet via Bluetooth. The TouchDRO app has a much more intuitive interface than that display in the vid, and a huge amount of functions. Tool library, work offsets, all the bells and whistles. It's also compatible with pretty much any scales.

    • @StefanGotteswinter

      I have no interest in touch-anything in the shop. Does not work with oily/dirty fingers. Gimme buttons any day. Plus no real bootuptime.

    • @exhempknight
      @exhempknight 5 років тому

      @@StefanGotteswinter I've not had any problems with dirty hands on the tablet. I use a cheap Amazon Fire tablet, was less than $50. Glass screen means fingerprints are gone with a swipe of a rag and a bit of alcohol.
      It's really nice to have an actual (onscreen) keyboard to enter data, and adding/changing tools is a tap away.
      As for boot up, I just wake the tablet, open the app, and make chips.
      Though I'm only a hobbyist, and not doing nearly the amount of machining you do (and certainly not nearly the quality work that you do).
