  • Filmed on Sunday, November 19 2023, I drive around Clinton, IA to see what's going on.
One of the first European settlers to arrive in the area was Elijah Buell, who established Lyons in 1837, named for the French city.
Joseph Bartlett, seeking gold, platted Clinton in 1836, but named it "New York." The town was renamed again in honor of New York politician DeWitt Clinton in 1855.
The completion of a railroad bridge in 1859, initially a single-track and later upgraded to double-track in 1909, was pivotal. This infrastructure fueled rapid growth, especially in the lumber industry between the 1850s and 1900, earning Clinton and Lyons the title "Lumber Capital of the World." The prosperity of this era is still reflected in the city's Victorian mansions, like the George M. Curtis House.
In 1965, the Mississippi River crested at 24.85 feet. Effectively flooding the city of Clinton as well as many other cities along the Mississippi. The Army Corps of Engineers began a seven-year, $28.9 million levee project. An 8.1-mile dyke, 4,330 feet of concrete flood wall, six pumping stations, seven closure structures, five major street crossings, 17,320 feet of new sewer, and 23 gate wells were completed and dedicated in June 1981.
Today, several major businesses have a presence in Clinton, including ADM, LyondellBasell, and Nestle Purina.

I grew up in Clinton. The city leaders have done a poor job of creating jobs. They prefer to have the drug come through

I grew up there, haven’t been back in almost 20 years, when I needed to get my dad a headstone, I don’t even recognize it anymore.

Born and raised in Lyons. Left at age 22 in 1975 to attend UNI. Left Iowa to only return to visit relatives and friends. Last time walked both sides of 5th Ave S downtown depressed to see so many empty stores. Sad to see my home town in a long decline with little hope.

I grew up in Mount Carroll Illinois and I always thought Clinton was the big city. As a kid my parents would go shopping in Clinton. I remember McEleney Chevrolet at the west end of the bridge leading into town.
