You forgot Lombricor - Repugnance. I don't blame you. It's absurdly underrated.
Entering Y2K-late-90s era of death metal
Major shifts happening
My personal favorite era, but also tying in to when I got into death metal.
When metal production was at its peak. Punchy and organic without being as clinically crisp as stuff is nowadays.
Keep the series going! 2000-2010
So far made it to 2001
i love how diverse Edge of Sanity - Infernal is. Their discography is top tier for me.
My favorite's are Deicide, Vital Remains, Hypocrisy and In Flames!
Another great Ranking Video!
Thanks as always Mister Trenches!!
💀🤘💀🤘💀🤘
So happy to see Gates of Ishtar on these lists. Im not the biggest melodic death metal guy but they friggin rock and deserve more attention.
97 is the year my old Death Metal band released our first real demo.
Were can we hear it?
Hard disagree on Deceased. For one, although Fearless Undead Machines has elements of death metal, Deceased is more of a thrash band at heart, with a strong influence from traditional heavy metal. It is a sprawling, epic concept album that few death metal bands were attempting at the time. King Fowley's vocals are polarizing, but I find them endearingly campy. He is obsessed with all things horror, and the intent is to present the music in a way that fans of old horror movies and stories could appreciate. Fowley was one of the unsung drumming heroes in metal until he had to give them up after a stroke. Mark Adams and Mike Smith provide wonderful dueling guitar parts, and the use of old horror movie sound clips fits the atmosphere perfectly. One can say that their next album, Supernatural Addiction, is perhaps more focused. But if you want to hear Deceased's magnum opus, it's Fearless Undead Machines.
I frequented their 98 album At Dusk and Forever. Very cool seeing Gates Of Ishtar make an appearance. Honestly didn't know they put out 3 albums back to back.
All their albums have a slightly different flavor too
Was just listening to Alluvial. It's great coming back to youtube and finding this. I've been enjoying this series. You've shown me some great bands!

6:06 oh you break my heart, man 😂
For me, Eternal Death is one of my all-time favorite albums hahaha.
Love watching these. Saw you have through 2001 done, hope you continue beyond that!
Mine too, I love their later albums too as The Crown.
happy birthday alexi laiho rest in power ❤🎸
Intestine Baalism debut of course, no question
Just listened to that Sacrilege album, simply amazing stuff. Thanks for the mention.
I don’t know that there’s a single death metal album from 1997 that I have a strong opinion of. I will say Warpath is fairly enjoyable to me, primarily because of Allen West’s guitar work and Chris Barnes still having decent vocals. I think if someone likes stuff like Wolverine Blues or Swan Song, it’s worth a listen (I know you like the latter and not so much the former). Six Feet Under is definitely meme worthy now, but I think they started with two pretty solid albums. I have legitimately listened to fewer death metal albums from 1997 than probably any other year. Whoracle is probably the only 1997 death metal album that I truly love, so strong agree on that one. I want to say that I don’t disagree that there probably is a lot of quality from the year, but I have heard very few of the albums compared to any other year from 1987 to about 2000 in the genre.
Konkhra - Weed out the Weak is the best death metal album of 1997. Great musicianship (James Murphy ex Death/Testament guitarist-Chris Kontos ex Machine Head drummer.)
Solid takes on these albums all around. Was hoping to hear what the shot was for Ebony Tears - Tortura Insomniae, but I understand it takes time to digest all this material.
I IMPLORE you to hear your take on their 1999 album A Handful of Nothing. I'm convinced that it might be the most underrated Melodeath that draws inspiration from SotS (yeah I know, but still).
And the Mind's I by DT is definitely their most underrated
Another great year 🐐🐐🐐
Belphegor hail from Austria.
Belphegor is the Goat 🐐🐐🐐
Trenches, you're so based for including both Shub Niggurath and Intestine Baalism in this video. 1997 was I think was an even better year for death metal than 1996 and 1995. I still need to check out Sacrilege, Fleshgrind, and Mortal Decay as I've heard great things about them. Here would be my ranking of these albums I've heard:
S -- Shub Niggurath - The Kinglike Celebration (Final Aeon on Earth), Dark Tranquillity - The Mind's I, Intestine Baalism - An Anatomy of the Beast, Dismember - Death Metal, Necrophobic - Darkside, Gates of Ishtar - The Dawn of Flames, In Flames - Whoracle
A -- Children of Bodom - Something Wild, Deicide - Serpents of the Light, Vital Remains - Let Us Pray, Crown of Thorns - Eternal Death, Centinex - Reflections, God Dethroned - The Grand Grimoire, Pyrexia - System of the Animal, Illdisposed - There's Something Rotten.. In the State of Denmark, Deceased - Fearless Undead Machines
B -- Septicflesh - The Ophidian Wheel, Vader - Black to the Blind, Belphegor - Blutsabbath, Malevolent Creation - In Cold Blood, Unleashed - Warrior, Edge of Sanity - Infernal, Edge of Sanity - Cryptic, Hypocrisy - The Final Chapter
C -- Obituary - Back from the Dead, Six Feet Under - Warpath
Soooo much music
Yeah that first Martyr album is rough, the band gets astronomically better moving into the 2000s. Warp Zone is a low-key classic.
Nice list
Glad to see Forever Underground getting some love, Vital Remains is a band I don't see get talked about all that often
"Serpents of the light, return to where you hide
Give us peace of mind"...That is the badass metal lyrical content that I enjoy. My all-time favorite song of Deicide. 🤘👹
Cool ranking. 👍 Personally I have difficulty with the melo death stuff like In Flames and Children of Bodom (Dark Tranquillity rules though), so those albums are near the bottom for me as opposed to you. .. and I do feel you are a bit harsh on that Vader album; one of their best albums in my book.. 🤗 But other than that, I agree on most.. 🤘🤘
Big props for mentionning Carcariass!
Years 96 and 97 are really paling in comparison to 95 in my opinion.
So glad that Pessimist made this list. Cult of the Initiated may be a bit disjointed, and I can understand why the vocals may be overbearing, but this album genuinely has a hold on me. I lov it, and got the remastered vinyl. The Final Chapter is one of my favourite death metal albums, and I go back to it at least once a year on average.

Death Metal by Dismember is a great album, it slaps. I totally agree! 👍
Mind’s I is so perfect from start to finish!
Awesome
please listen to that Malevolent Creation album again and pay close attention to the drums. Derek Roddy puts on a masterclass in technical drumming
Bummer to not see Infernal Torment's Birthrate Zero on this list. That album is one of death metal's criminally overlooked albums. Also missed Broken Hope and Theory In Practice. But otherwise, cool video. Good to see Intestine Baalism get their deserved praise. Anyway, next year 1998, is when Yyrkoon releases their debut. But that one is more progressive black/thrash than the death metal approach they went for later.
For these lists I just search "[year] death metal albums" and go through what I see. I'll cross-reference a few sites, but no matter what things get left off. I've even seen situations where bigger names weren't on the list for no good reason. There's really no way to absolutely be sure that every single important album gets covered beyond having a complete Encyclopedic knowledge of every album ever released.
These year by year videos remind me of my youth. I've forgotten about some of the D.M I use to listen to. I disagree with nothing because they're your opinions.
I think Black to the Blind is one of the best Vader albums personally
Gates of Ishtar are amazing
Again here, the only thing that seems off with the lists is death 'n roll being banished to the lowest point, as I immenselt enjoyed There's Something Rotten... album.
I like your descriptions of Martyr and Dismember albums, they seem the most solid releases for me out there. And about Children of Bodom, I was never a fan of them, but I don't see their debut as spectacular. I like the '99 one way more.
Melodeath Supremacy!
Shub Niggurath - The Kinglike Celebration (Final Aeon on Earth) is the best
Whaou...Vader, Hypocrisy and Illdisposed..thise records are for me Perfection !!!! I am surprised but hey, this is my personnal taste
0:56 CARCARIASS MENTIONED
They got better with future albums, lol
Carcariass should be at fantastic. Shame they get so little attention.
Gates of Ishtar is my favorite on that list. Its easily their best album.
I saw obituary and six feet under live in 1997 awesome show for some reason there was a skinhead rap band there
the fleshgrind ranking makes me sad lmaoo, i understand where youre coming from but its one of my personal fav albums
Intestine Baalism! Love that band! I think their 2nd is even better.
Black to the Blind is in my personal top 5 death metal albums of all time. I really disagree with you about this one, I think it's by far their best, it's amaing riff after amazing riff, the production is enormous but not ridiculous as on Litany, it has that Slayer on steroids feel, and it's relentless. Really, the best deathrash album of all time in my book. One of the rare death metal albums I go back to on a regular basis in my car with Dying Fetus' Reign Supreme, Bolt thrower's Those Once Loyal, Carcass' Heartwork and Messiah's Choir of Horrors (if not considering Death's discography). De Profundis is good, but not as percusive I find.
"no bad album" followed by mentioning six feet under is surely a oxymoron?
We haven't gotten to the TRULY awful SFU albums yet...
One of the years of all time
METAL TRENCHES HYPE!
You know it
You should do a 1998 death metal ranking video and rank opeth my arms your hearse and cannibal corpse gallery of suicide
Hallo Young man . Thanks for the Video . Belphegor is from Austria Not Germany 🤘
I'm aware, sometimes you just say the wrong thing when you talk on camera this month. Also I'm 37 lol.
Black to the blind is a goated album, if De Profundis is perfection, b2tb is at least fantastic.
Martyr is the GOAT!
Don't forget Necrophagia Holocausto de la morte when you review the year 1998
Too late. These have all been complete for at least a month
Chicago? Any czech background? 😀
Have done a Deicide tier list?
Funny, I'm finishing the script right now
Wow
Belphegor are Austrian
I think I am too tough guy for this list. Haha. Melodeath isn’t really my bag.
Wtf?! Where the hell is Broken Hope - Loathing? Or Dehydrated - Ideas?
Doesn’t it strike you as a little brain broken to watch a video covering this many albums, and then responding with this comment? Try to imagine yelling at someone in person for spending hours listening to these albums, then recording and editing this video for your entertainment… I know it’s easy to forget that there are real humans just like you on the other side of the screen, but there are. I don’t have a staff, and I’m not a machine.
@@MetalTrenches I wasn't yelling....but come on!!! It's Broken Hope!!!
@MetalTrenches also Deaden - Hymns Of The Sick. A recommended listen if you haven't already.
wheres broken hopes loathing album!!!
This is beyond being glass half empty… this is like having a gallon jug and complaining that a teaspoon is missing.
It would just end up at the bottom of the list like every other BDM band.
Do 1995
I did... I even linked the playlist at the end and in the pinned comment.
@MetalTrenches cool.Hope Suffocation pierced from within, Morbid Angel Domination and Six feet under Haunted were included
WTF dude? Six Feet Under deserves S tier /s
Bruh
you really think Children of Bodom released a death metal album?
Where is jungle rot?
They didn't show up any of the lists I pulled from so sadly they got left behind
Belphegor are austrian not german. ;)
you really think Whoracle is a death metal album? And you ranked it as perfect to boot? I understand you’re a fan of In Flames, but they don’t belong on this list
Belphegor is Austrian, not German
I know. I just fumbled my notes
Belphegor are from Austria, not Germany! 😳 For Satan's sake! 😈
I knew that and for some reason flubbed it. Oops
Maybe the weakest year in Death Metal so far. The Necrophobic and Intestine Baalism album are alright but even then I don't return to them that often.
Dude still wears a Halloween mask 💀
And even with that dumb mask, he puts more out into the world and draws more of a crowd than you probably ever will... Thanks for the ad revenue, "dude."
@@MetalTrenches waah waah keep crying mr insecure
Belphegor a GERMAN band?!?!?!?!?! My country just declaired war on you ⚔
It was a mental slip. I know it’s Austria
"No bad albums". Immediately mentions a bad album.
Ha ha ha, right from the off!!!!
About 30 of them
a terrible one
mortal decay, pyrexia, malevolent creation, deicide, fleshgrind& intestine baalism, decrepit, infest dead, and wheres broken hopes loathing? but these r my favorites if rhis year
