Absolutely a grand performance .... Jammin ' with Mingus exquisite tune Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ....firing jazz... Mahavishnuisms....swing and more....Bravo.
@MarkLown Thanks. Bill Connors is another one who can do this kind of thing. People expect if of someone like Paco da Lucia but when these other guys do it, it somehow seems more of an achievement. We certainly live in a golden era of musical virtuosity.
Owen Hu. The closest would be the dedication to Bill Evans but that isn't really acoustic though it has a most mellow sound. Also, the LP with an orchestra and wife at the time Katia Labeque would be close.
Owen Hu most welcome. There is also a UA-cam video of him playing that Mediterranean Concerto acoustically with the orchestra. Another video has him playing Belo Horizonte acoustically with wife at the time Katia and drummer Tommy Campbell. You will find both most enjoyable, if you haven't already discovered them. Good luck.
The tribute album, Time Remembered, was entirely acoustic. He also had a quartet of acoustic guitarists backing him on it. It's nothing like this video, tho.
KirkSandall thanks! i unintentionally discovered the time remembered bill evans tribute album when i was going through bill evans' catalog. great stuff
He did a commendable job tuning that guitar on the fly. It was way out in the beginning. Nylon strings go out of tune when the temperature changes and, unless your guitar has been acclimating on stage under the lights and THEN tuned before your performance, it is guaranteed to go out of tune not long after hitting the stage. At two different times during the performance, he grabbed, on the fly, a string that was out and, in a flash, was able to crank it back to (nearly) the proper pitch just by guessing and executing in a split second how much twist his tuning machines required. If he had been wrong about which string to adjust or the direction of the discrepancy, the guitar would have gone more out of tune. It did not. Both times it clearly improved. Unfortunately, it was never 100% in tune, which means that, however awesome you think this performance was, it should have and would have sounded much better under slightly more favorable conditions. He's actually significantly better than this sounded.
Sorry, Tom, but you're wrong. The guitar wasn't out of tune. It sounds as if he might have been using an effect, possibly chorus or Univibe, but out of tune? No.
The first and foremost jazz-punk guitarist!!!!!!!♥️

Mike
Rest in power, Mingus Mingus Mingus
What a complete guitarist! Who gave this dude a hummingbird's nervous system? I guess he gave it to himself. Awesome performance.
Trace this back to Charles Mingus to find the roots of greatness and genius. McLaughlin makes it his own. A genius interpreting a genius.
Great playing and always inspiring!.
WHAT A LEGACY AND BLISS FOR MANDKIND.. THANKS SO MUCH, JOHN
Pure Class!!!
Wow👍

Beautiful! Is this from the John McLaughlin & Shakti performance at Heineken Jazzaldia, Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain, 2004?
Thanks, llafutaal Do you happen to have the whole show? I've been looking for it since the late 80's
Check out Clive Carroll's version on Emerald City Guitars video!
@ironpirites Love the hummingbird comment!
has he put out any other record like my goal's beyond that features him playing standards on acoustic?

thank you sir!

What year was this from?
When and where was this filmed?
Jeez Louise. How do you top that?
Awesome, but you always get that from Johnny Mac.
Who composed Goodbye pork pie hat
Charlie Mingus.
Is there anything John McLaughlin can't do on a guitar? That's a rhetorical question, the answer is obviously, no..
he is every guitar player.
Maybe coffee, but I'm not so sure.
@@crizia2007 haha, but to be honest when hes in toap gear i bet he could make coffee with guitar, strings must be hot hot hot
@@mishagasparovsky196 Considering the speed with which he touches them, they are hot.
does his acoustic has a chorus effect on it?
