I know someone who made herself an entire leather jacket out of scraps. She just laid out her pattern, set the scraps down like puzzle pieces to fill it, then used an awl to punch holes around all the edges of each scrap. Then she used leather thongs painstakingly sew all the patches together, edge to edge. The final product is functional and a pretty eye-catching Frankenstein's Monster of dozens and dozens of patches of different colours in totally random shapes.
If you have an English point belt punch, you can make leather scales. Just flip it over. When you have a lot, tack them onto a base layer for custom scaled armor
One of the things that has stopped me from doing your leather projects, was being afraid of the amount of waste. Maybe I'll keep these in mind and try what you did with the book the druid, I really wanted those.
These all seem like a good jumping point before getting into the bigger projects. I just bought some either tools and leather to make the holders for my Viking War Horn and will be using your video as reference when I go to finally do the project, but have been hesitant since I never worked with Leather before. Think I will try these first so I can get a feel for the leather before I jump on the horn holder. I could always use more book marks, and a nice key chain 😊
I enjoy your enthusiasm and videos. Another version of the key ring could be, Only punch the hole through one side. Screw the concho on and glue them together and even saddle stitch it for a high end look. I make a version with beer caps glued between the layers.
I love your new, heavy keyring-especially noting how you let its beauty shine, by also not globbing a bunch of keys on the ring with it. This beauty is also most practical! In my twenties, I carried heavy sets of car keys, until several hundreds of dollars in repairs to my car’s ignition & steering column, forced me to lighten my load. My heavy key sets are now separated, in smaller groupings, connectable by small & sturdy metal hooks (harvested from old dog leashes), then hooked to my belt loop or purse but never (while in use) to my car’s “ignition-only keychain.” No more preventable injuries to my car- Or at least to its ignition and steering column 🎉
For the keychain, if you want an even better look, punch one side before folding it, leaving the back intact, then put the concho in before you glue the sides together. If you have the extra bit of cash for it and have a relatively simple logo, it's rather cheap to get a custom logo stamp to center on the back of it...or just any symbol one you like...or initials.
You just gave me an idea for a small business! 👌 Thanks! now I'll have an excuse to start leveling up my leather skills! btw leather rings are a thing right?
@@blasbrothers4089 I went on a leather ring making tear for a while. You can sew them to size or wet form them around a ring mandrel if you don't want to sew them.

I used the exact same concho as a closure for a ren-faire pouch. (Tandy book of Kells Dragon). My favorite scrap leather project is actually to make a mug hanger though. 1" x 10" strip is about right.

To turn they keychain from 11 to 20, punch the hole in one of the circles and install the concho before you glue them together. You'll hide the screw and give it a much cleaner look that way!
Thanks for the great video. I have tried sourcing the strap cutter, but online when I google it it comes up with a similiar looking tool but this one has an exacto blade that cuts morw like strips. It doesn't seem like it can work with a circle as you've shown. Can you maybe tell us where we can get your exact one? The link seems to be broken. Thanks.
I made a keychain for myself and one for both my parents. mine came out raggedy and the others less so. I wanna make a really good one for a friend who's going into the military with the specified branch on the concho. I'll upload a photo to discord when it's finished.
How do you flatten and smooth really crumpled leather scraps sold jammed into a bag? Can they be steamed? There is a lot of suede in the bag I got and I'm not sure how to revive them or use the thinner suede.
Can i ask a question. My uncle passed away few years ago. He handed down a jacket to my brother (his nephew) and we want to repurpose and make memorial items from it. All ideas i can find r purcses n bags. Any ideas ?
I would love to help with ideas! Could you message me with more details? Maybe the kind of leather/jacket and what thoughts you have already had? You can email us at hello@skilltree.how 😁
Great ideas! I have a ton of scrap. It's difficult to throw away leather, because it cost SO MUCH! btw, that compass looks Very much like my trusty Harbor Freight compass :)
Maybe if you want to save the super tiny scraps from beveling and framing, you could make little tiny leather dolls or figurines out of other smallish scraps and use the super thin scraps for hair. Or you could incorporate them into embroidery material to add texture. I come from a use every last scrap you can and what you can't you give to the cats background... My Grandma would take her eggshells and coffee grounds from breakfast into her rose garden each morning.
The book mark is awesome. I'd love to make a few but I can't find my leather, tools and supplies. The Mother in Law come over one day moved some things around and I can't find half my stuff😤😤😤

You said you were into larping right? Well to make it look like you are doing magic, you could put a water bottle in a freezer or a cooler full of ice to make it portable, pour salt on the ice and water bottle before you put in the freezer, then you put it in the freezer and leave it for about 30 minutes. Then you smack the bottom of the water bottle decently hard, and boom, your bottle in frozen. This was really cool when I tried it.

So, I used to have this favorite black leather handbag that was trimmed with those studs, and on the front it spelled out "BOYS LIE". My mom sneakily through it away because she said it made me sound like a lesbian. Could never find a replacement. Watching you make that little bracelet though made me realize that if I ever get disposable income, I can literally make a replacement myself. And any other BOYS LIE accessories my heart desires!
Putting Bees wax on the coasters will literally cause the water to bead off of the coaster and still get the table wet. Totally defeating the purpose of a coaster. Would not recommend any of the projects except maybe the bracelets, which won't make you any money.
