Great review! I remember more or less liking The Reader. It was a quick and very direct read that I thought maybe wasn't quite as smart as it wanted to be but was nonetheless still pretty good. The movie I thought completely missed the point though, basically just being a vehicle for Kate Winslet's star power and seemingly not understanding that the inability to read is meant to be more of a metaphor for Holocaust illiteracy among the post-war generation of Germans. She did a great job, but the film was shallower than the book I thought.

Thank you. Movie adaptations usually fall short. Although I only have a vague memory of watching the movie, I tend to agree with you.
I remember liking the book, but not being deeply impressed by it. Great review though!
