  • The GenI A1 trumpet is the first trumpet Adams designed. In the Adams trumpet line, higher numbers indicate more recent designs, not better designs; many of the Adams trumpets are more specialized designs for certain sound concepts or playing situations. The A1 is a great all-around trumpet designed for versatility. The GenII A1 is pretty much a full redesign with enhanced playability and intonation. The GenI and GenII share the same mouthpiece receiver and a couple trim elements, but everything else has been changed!
0:37 Description of the differences between the Adams A1 GenI and GenII trumpets
5:16 Raw audio comparison, no reverb or sweetening. Many musical styles demonstrated.
Let us know what differences you hear in the comments below!
The GenI A1 is a great trumpet, we have ONE left in stock that's a new instrument. This horn has a fairly traditional valve block, with a bronze lower cluster and nickel silver upper cluster. The third valve slide has a dump slide but no water key. The horn comes with two single braced tuning slides. The third valve bottom cap has a little additional mass.
The GenII has a sleeker modern profile, it's a little more compact looking because of the shape of the tuning slide and bell bow bends. Still a single braced tuning slide and no water key on the third valve slide, although the GenII doesn't have the third valve dump slide. The valve block is a little sleeker as well (Adams makes all of their valve blocks in-house). The bracing between the leadpipe and bell has been adjusted for the GenII as well, and the front brace is a little thicker. Because this is the current production model of the A1, it is also available with a TON of custom options. Check out the link below or give us a call at 816-410-0826 with any questions about a custom built A1!
The GenI and GenII have very different feel and playability. The GenII has improvements in intonation and playability over the already great GenI. If you like the sound of the A1, grab it while you can! We only have one left and we're selling it at a great price.

That gen ii is really fire. So focused, so clear. But never harsh or small. Really just an incredibly balanced paint brush!

The Gen II really shines on the bebop stuff.... sounds much cleaner and easier to facilitate through those phrases. Both are good, the Gen II is definitely an improvement!

First impression is somewhat opposite of Herb’s comment. Gen 1 sounds focused and tight to me, like slotting can be easily missed. I also imagine you’ve been spending way more time on the Gen II recently, so the Gen I is more work and perhaps not as forgiving.
The Gen II is full and broad, with easier playability and wider slotting. Probably much easier to bend pitches on it too.
If I was in Symphonic band, I imagine the Gen I would blend perfectly for any player with a row of Bach and Yamahas. It would work in other settings I’m sure, and is a traditional all-around horn. The Gen II just has more of everything to my ears. What a lovely sound. I also dig the modern lines. That would be my choice.

These horns sound so different! I’ll take the Gen 1 for Charlier and Gen 2 for everything else.

Turns out that wasn't the last of the Mohicans on the Gen 1. Lucky for me. Thanks again.

There is a really nice sizzle in the Gen 1. The Gen 2 is creamy and still has a good sizzle. You can hear that the Gen 2 really speaks and responds especially below the staff.

Which slide were you using on the Gen 1? Cylindrical or Conical? I like the conical slide better on my Gen 1 as it is more efficient and gives more of the sound I desire for commercial playing.

      Conical

Trent Austin, you sounded great on both. I guess the big difference is the Gen 2 being more efficient and easier for you to color to your preferred sound based on your playing settings. 😀

Now that Im on my 9th Adams Ive owned over the years (including current horns), I can attest that the A1 Gen I and the Gen II horns are THE best two Ive ever played. I love love love love, the gen I, its classic, super versatile with the two tuning slides (one for lead/commercial one for classical) makes for an amazing all around horn (SUPER in tune and SOLID double A right out if the box). The Gen I, now that Ive owned it for a little over a month is much like a Ferarri that Ive yet to keep up with. Thats all, its mind blowing insanely good. Now that I have my sterling silver tuning slide to boot, it makes for a killer two horn combo to take care of any playing I need to do, all of which I play (principle in orchestra, small jazz group, brass quintet, rock band, solo classical trumpet and new orleans style brass band). Many thanks to Trent and fam and Meil for all the love over the years!

You sound great on that gen ii, but gen 1 is no slouch. A9 vs A4? Which is the better choice for soloist comparison?

      @austincustom  4 роки тому

A9 vs a4? Really depends on what you are looking for in terms of feel. Easier for us to discuss that over the phone call us anytime at 816-410-0826
      Thanks!

?Gen 1 has a nice vintage sound. I'll take either horn, quite frankly!

They both sound wonderful, Trent, but I think the 1st gen. A1 sounds a little darker, richer, creamier, broader (a little less focused than the 2nd gen.) and would be my preference because that's the sound I always go for. But, again, both sound beautiful.

I love the sound of the Gen I but it's so much more of a challenge (for me) to play. It shows how far Adams has come in terms of making supremely efficient horns. Personally for me the more efficient the instrument is the easier it is for myself to color the sound.

The slotting is different. I definitely prefer the A1 genII but we do have an A1 genI in stock too!

The Gen 1 seems edgier and more breathy than the Gen 2. IMO the Gen 2 is a clear winner.
