Seems as though Rob doesn't get tired of talking about his time on AITF(until he and Sally left in the 1977-78 season).Loved his dad Carl. His son Jake is a reporter for CBS 2/KCAL 9 news in Los Angeles.
The chemistry between Rob Reiner and Carrol O'Connor was off the charts amazing. It is a big reason why the show was the best in American television history.
Without question. The animosity was there but it was clear that it was theatrical. That's a hard line. But Carroll and Rob walked it perfectly and everyone that watched that show was the better for it. Great writing. Great acting. Great time to be alive to watch TV.
Tremendous history of a show that touched millions of hearts, and is still doing so in reruns. That show made a difference to humanity very greatly to the positive. Thanks for this wonderful little interview.
Rob Reiner, after all your successes,an actor, Director and producer,to me,you will always be a MEATHEAD...and I mean that in a good way..... bless you ROB.
Im currently watching the DVD series of All in the family, Hands down one of the greatest shows ever, Archie and Michael were comedy gold as was Gloria but Edith will always be my favorite, Carroll O'Conner and Jean Stapleton were two of the greatest.
I saw that once when it first aired and it always stuck with as one of the great moments of the show. I only rewatched a few days ago when youtube recommended it. It's just as funny as I remember.
I remember watching All in the Family as a kid. It seems to be even funnier now. I agree with Rob Reiner regarding the cast. Four true professionals were able to come together to produce a show that made people think and that was entertaining at the same time. A lot of shows from that era have been forgotten. All in the Family will probably still be running 100 years from now.
Iconic & hilarious sitcom I watch till this day. "That's my tomorries lunch twinkie" (sock episode)..."& do it that way for the rest of your life" "Can't you follie that?" 😂
From the time I first saw the sock and shoe episode , I swear I've been putting 1 sock and 1 shoe on and then the other sock and shoe.that episode impacted me so much and I always get a gigle from it almost daily every morning.
Ground breaking! So many iconic scenes. All in the family was SO ahead of it’s time. RIP Carrol O’Connor & Jean Stapleton. ❤️🥰We love you bigot & ding bat . Yes I know they were not that way in real life . ❤
Me too. Robs interview just popped up on UA-cam and when I read the subject the sock and shoe scene instantly popped into my head. LOL It wasn’t even funny to me , I can’t believe I still remember that, I was about 9 y/o.
My favorite "Meathead" moment was when Mike lost a job to a "DEI" candidate, a black fellow student. Mike knew that he was more qualified and believed that his black collegue would refuse the job in favor of Mike. The look on Mike's face when he was proven wrong was priceless.
C'mon.....ya gotta finish it. Mike - suppose it rains. -- your way, you'll be running around with both feet wet. My way, I can hop around on one foot and stay dry.!! 😂
I actually still think about that scene a lot when I’m putting on my shoes. 50 years later, and it still sticks with me. I agree with Archie - Meathead was doing it all wrong.
What was the episode that you are referring to when you mentioned the 5 o’clock show bombed and the four of you got together and reworked it and did it at the 8 o’clock show?
My favorite AITF moment may well be "Archie's Bicentennial Minute". What a hilarious and stupid diatribe from Archie! I personally lose it when Archie says, "I can't believe my ears. A white guy standin' there bloatin' over taking a job from a colored guy!" The word "bloatin'" leaves me doubled over laughing. BTW, Mr. Reiner, Archie always called Mike "Meathead". I usually get a salad on the way home from work, and I'm of a conservative persuasion on many issues. If we were to ever argue, I think it would be fair to call me "Salad head." Have a good laugh, please. BTW, I also LOVE The Dick Van Dyke Show; it's my favorite TV comedy.
As someone of a liberal persuasion, I just want to say how nice it is to read a comment from someone who can disagree and still say nice things. I always thought "All in the Family" was about exactly that. Archie was the buffoon but Mike was just as much a fool sometimes. But they were a family and they loved each other. We've really lost our way in this country because we can't civilly disagree anymore. As hard as the 70's were, at least we had that. (Some of the time.) Have a great day, Saladhead. 👍
I've heard him mention that second episode before, but I think he said he doesn't remember which episode it was. That's a shame, because I'd love to watch it again and see.
I think of the sock/shoe scene most times when I’m putting on socks and shoes. Sometimes I do a sock/sock/shoe/shoe and other times I do sock/shoe/sock/shoe.
Has anybody here seen the original pilot? It had a different Mike and a different Gloria, but it was exactly the same as that first scene of the televised show. The house is basically the same but it’s a bit different as well.

Rob didn't tell the funny part as he responded to Archie, "What if it starts raining and your 1/2 way done, this what you at least have one shoe on and that foot that doesn't get wet" Referring to his put a sock and shoe on one foot then do the other.
What I love about the "sock and a sock, shoe and a shoe" scene is that both actors stayed perfectly in character. So funny.
The whole woild puts on a sock an a sock an a shoe an a shoe. I'm amazed that that scene was improvised! It was brilliant!
I cannot believe this was improv! It’s so smooth, too…but he and Carroll got to that legendary point together 👏🏻
He loved Carroll O'Connor, in real-life, as friend and a person. May his acting mentor #RIP. (1924 - 2001).
@Robert Juzefski yea so what
you don't see the real love they had for each other off screen very often .
Would've been interesting if he had guest starred on In the Heat of the Night, along with Jean and Sally.
Of course, he loved Carroll O'conner in real life. They are both bleeding heart liberals.
The sock and shoe skit was a classic.
Also the similar scene with “the flap” when folding down the bed sheets.

I was born in 84 but never watched or heard of all in the family. I grew up watching sitcoms like full house, family matters, fresh prince
The shoes and the one about How to go to bed. “You slid yourself in there like a punch card going into a time clock.” 🤣
which episode was that one
A sock and a shoe , a sock and a shoe, another epsisode I watched on the black and white 16 inch television . Good times.
Iconic & hilarious sitcom I watch till this day. "That's my tomorries lunch twinkie" (sock episode)..."& do it that way for the rest of your life" "Can't you follie that?" 😂
YUP DO IT THAT WAY STARTING TOMORROW MORNING.
I remember the socks. ALL these yrs later. Only TV families talk that way and it was unforgettable.
I remember the "cola challenge" he had with Archie where Mike correctly identifies the colas: "Pepsi, Coke, RC Cola."
"You aint gonna get the quarter....'cause why? 'cause you are a lousy crook !" 🤣🤣🤣
Actually the cola challenge was with Gloria when she bought Mike another Cola,,, the contest with Archie was his worlds Fair spoon for his cereal.
I remember that scene like it was yesterday. LOL
I know. One of the best scenes in television.
Also Archie teaching mike how to eat and getting in the bed...
“If there’s a fire we’ll both run out the door I’ll be hopping around in one foot keeping dry and you’ll be standing around in 2 wet socks.”
Rob is Magnificent.
An Amazing Talent.

Hysterical
Same!!!
The sock and shoe skit was the best. I remember the first time I saw it and just lost it.
Amazing show...we need it back again ❤❤❤❤
Archie was right if for no other reason than symmetry. A brilliant and funny skit. Just now finding out it was improvised blows me away.

Wowwwww it was improvised??? that is beyond awesome
You have to be quick witted and talented to pull off an improv like this!
Great actors, great comics!
Funniest Mike scene was the “take my pants” episode 🤣
and the shoes and socks part also
when?
I think about that sock and shoe logic to this day! 😂

Meathead or not, he's one hell of director.
Everday when I put my socks and shoes on, I remember this scene and dialogue exchange between Mike and Archie.
Suppose it's snowing or raining outside . . . YOUR way, my feet would get wet . . . MY way, I can hop around on one foot and stay dry.

I like the bed/ cot episode best

Brilliant show
I, shocked it was improvised because it was so perfectly written lol. Still kills me
The sock and shoe scene was both my parent's favorite scene from the show. Would always bring it up.
I somehow missed this episode before. Just now watched the sock and a sock clip.
I grew up with that show and Still put my shoes and socks on Archie's way! It just makes sense! lol
That scene was improvised?? Wow. I still think of it sometimes when I'm putting on my shoes and socks! 😂
I remember that sock and shoe scene. Archie and Mike each defending that their way was the right way.
Loved that scene!
Watch it every Sunday night for two hours
I do respect Rob for many
MORE BUTTER!!!
Rob brought up such good topics
Actually in another interview he did about the same story he said it was the Second Act that had tanked and that they improvised and re-did.
I actually still think about that scene a lot when I’m putting on my shoes. 50 years later, and it still sticks with me. I agree with Archie - Meathead was doing it all wrong.
My favorite 2 episodes were George on the stoop and Sammy Davis Jr. kissing Archie

I have to agree with Archie on the sock controversy. Unless there's snow on the ground...
As far as Archie was concerned, Meathead couldn't do ANYTHING the right way. 😂
I remember that scene well, and even as a kid I thought 'Archie's right and meathead is crazy, nobody does that!'

yeah, the one that bombed and then they worked a rush fix and salvaged. I wish I knew.

Best show in TV history. He will always be Meathead to me!!
Every time Archie called him Meathead it was a warning to the future.
I wish he had said what scene it was. What episode?
My favorite moment was when Archie first called him meathead and explained what it meant. Turned out to be true beyond the show.
You mr way you'll have wet socks if it rains, i can hop on one foot and still be dry lol
It's kind of funny because "Meathead" really is a meathead in real life.

Like to know the episode Rob is citing here that initially bombed until reworked via improv.
