This opening is one of the most seductive, invigorating and aesthetically impressive introductions to a film that I can remember. And the film itself has grown tremendously over time. Every time I watch it it gets better and better and ranks higher in the ranking of my favourite films. And the vision of its producers and director, the sheer genius of its songwriters, the wit of the screenwriter, and the effortless glamour of its dancers and actors is all the more evident.

Seductive is the perfect word! Back when I worked retail I listened to this song on repeat every morning I opened.

The strings are entering the moment the shot is widening, revealing that the whole platform is a crane-bridge!
What an amazing use of music!

Quelle merveille ! Un moment de grâce. Et la suite est un feu d'artifice de joie de vivre et de couleurs.
J'écoute régulièrement la B. Ô et regarde souvent le film.
1967 reste l'une des grandes années de la pop culture

My old friend, Grover Dale (blue shirt and tie) was in the original Broadway cast of "West Side Story" and the movie version as well. He and I and the great Elaine Stritch had been in Noel Coward's "Sail Away" on Broadway 5 years before this movie was made. Every time I watch this movie, I am so proud of Grover and proud to have known him.

He and George do a great job, you’d never know that they weren’t French!

Best musical of all time in my mind. Best fusion of classical Hollywood with European flair. Unbeatable.

So so good! To have them stretch in time with the music is so clever and brings you right into this world were people can start dancing at the drop of a hat. When you realise that they are on a moving bridge it’s a clue that you are moving into a different sort of world. Michel Legrand excelled himself on this soundtrack

    初めてこの場面を観た時は何が始まるんだろう、わくわくする様な気持ちになって、音楽とダンサーの融合の素晴らしさを感じました。

The light. The colours. The movement. That suave jazz. As I live it's everything.

Amazing, you realize the whole production with the trucks boats and dancers is flying through the air!!!! Once I've seen this, I think it a crime to operate that river crossing crane again for any reason, without also furnishing a costumed dancers like these every time !!!

What a fine upload... xD As long as it respects the due credits to the producers, I wanted thousands more quality clips like this. I saw 'Demoiselles' and immediatedly wanted to experience some of its parts again, with all their beauty. I mean, look at them. That's so sexy ^^

1:04 starting a fight in school: take the first strike, back away, approaching opponent, kick him, block, attack him from behind, kick him 2 times, but you lose once he punches your face and stomach, you kneel, the bell rings and weakly walk to class

Seems like a combination of West Side Story and Pippin. Very Fosse like. Except Pippin came out years later.

One of my all time favourite films. The opening sequence in thr traffic in 'La La Land' is a nod to this scene. 'La La Land' was hugely influenced by this film, stylistically and musically, as well as literally stealing the storyline of Scorsese's 'New York New York.
