Impromptu Acoustic Ambient with Meng Qi Wingie 2, Microcosm and Bluebox

- I got the Meng Qi Wingie 2 resonator in the mail from Schneidersladen today, hooked it up to the Microcosm and the Bluebox and recorded my first minutes of playtime with it in this fully improvised jam. The Wingie's built-in microphones were used as input signal. The Microcosm runs the Mosaic 4 algorithm, and the Bluebox is set up with the Clouds reverb and a ping-pong delay. This is a weird one :-).
The audio is recorded to SD card on a Bluebox recorder/mixer and normalized in Audacity. Video is recorded on a Canon EOS M50 mk2 with the included EF-M 15-45mm lens. Audio and video is synchronized in DaVinci Resolve 18 (free version).

Really pleased to find this, lovely sounds, I have the same devices (amongst others) but didn’t use them together, now I just need some foil and a paint brush..
Stunning video and, naturally, music. Truly beautiful and inspiring
This is very inspirational. Some resonance and reverb turns ordinary things into awesome sounds. I particularly like the brush. The Wingie is a fabulous thing. I have ordered one.
Once Agaiin the Algorithm read my mind i wondered what the Meng Qi would sound like paired with the Microcosm and BOOM ! YOUR VIDEO WAS NEXT!!❤❤🎉🎉 Great work!!
Update I just ordered one!
Cool! Be warned, though, you might get hooked on ASMR if you start touching it with your fingers. Or so I heard, from a friend.
Wow foil sounds cool like raindrops on dry leafs or like ice crystals❤️ Nice jam.
Yeah, that was a new discovery for me too. The Microcosm repeats snippets of the sound an octave or two up, and the Clouds reverb in the Bluebox spreads the sound out in time and space in a really nice way.
@@Waveformer you didn't used here built-in reverb in microcosm? Of it's only form bluebox - it sounds really interesting..,
@@orchidsvoid There was some reverb from the Microcosm as well, I think I had it set at around 40% with the largest reverb algorithm.
The Wingie 2 seems like a perfect addition to your gear! It's almost meditative to use, it seems.
Man, this is wonderful! So blissful Thomas - love it
Thanks, Sebastian. It’s weirdly satisfying to use the Wingie. You can get a lot of interesting noises from that box 😀.
I love my wingie too 👌🎼
Wonderful ambient magic. Delightful to drift away with on a wet autumnal afternoon. Reminds me of a number of Mutable Instruments devices - Rings, Clouds and Make Noise Morphagene. I am sure some ambient modular musicians could spend days patching this kind of thing - I speak from past experience ;-( Could also cost £1000’s to buy the modules and here we are with a bit of kit that costs £169 in the UK + some kitchen foil and a couple of brushes - I have spent more on patch cables!!!. So glad I came across your amazing Wavestate offerings a year or so back. On the back of it I have sold most of my modular gear and invested in a few well chosen hardware devices. Looks like you have just convinced me of my next purchase. Great sounds - look forward to what you come up with in combination of some of your other instruments.
The Wingie was a big surprise for me. I don’t know what I had expected, but it is very musical. And it’s fun to incorporate live recording of acoustic sounds in my jams. The Wingie is like a bridge between inharmonic and harmonic sounds. It works very well with the Microcosm.
Fascinating. This is the most creative use of the Miscrocosm I’ve seen. Lovely to see
Thanks so much for your wonderful music video 📹. So well done ✔. I hope all is well in Your world 🌎. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
Wonderful music. Great performance!
Amazing ✨
A bit of a step up from *mumble mumble* years ago when I was using a reel-to-reel tape recorder to capture environmental sounds, creating physical loops with wood block and razor blade, and then manipulating them through spring reverbs. But the principle remains the same, and this makes me want to give it a try! ❤
Magnifique 😍
Brilliant!
Very nice
Very nice 👍
I want to use this in a live environment, but from what I’ve encountered there’s too much feedback. But I think if I use a directional mic or even a contact mic, that should help with it self resonating.
I’ve been thinking the same thing, both directional and contact mic should work just fine. Let me know if you try it out.
Quality !! 😎
And this is how foleys make most of the sound effects in our movies and tv shows
Great idea, in case of a blind test, I would guess at least GR-1 with multiple pedals ;-)
This is amazing, just ordered one haha. Is there a specific mode you are using on the Wingie?
Cool! I cycle through the modes during the jam
Thank you, really love your videos. Very inspiring :)
@3:41 think you're staying towards rule 35 here 😂 but thanks great patch ❤
😅 Yeah, you’ve got a point there. My wife had a good laugh when she saw this video 😂
Great!..microcosm just a little..but cosm is deep!)
So cool! Is the reverb applied to Wingie's output? Is there any other sound input apart from the internal mics? Just figuring out how to use as I ordered one recently. Thanks!
All sounds come from the internal mics. The leftmost slider adjusts the balance between the raw mic input and the resonators. The stereo output from the Wingie goes into the Bluebox for some delay and (huge) reverb, and also to the Microcosm for some granular effects and some more reverb.
@@Waveformer thanks! Keep on bringing good sound!
I’ve yet to hear wingie sound bad. I’m so close to getting one - but playing live is a big part of my relationship with music. I’m worried it can’t be used live with its contact microphones because of fold back sound. Am I being an idiot? I also appreciate that this might not be designed for that application either which would be entirely understandable
An here I am thinking I'd never get into ASMR
Hah. Yeah, it’s a first for me too 😁
@@Waveformer While I've got you - thank you for your craft. I absolutely love your work. The last couple of years have been rough with so much work from home and your channel has been an absolute gift 🙏
@@Arfenhaus thank you so much for your kind words 😊. Music has been important for me as well in these weird couple of years 🎹🎶
Pent. Snasen sak.
Takk :-)
