100% with you on this one. I always liked the anime a lot (never read the manga though) and when I watched the live action movie last year, I felt it was decent, too. I didn't like the muting of Koyuki's voice either. Hoped, they would reveal it at the end, but they never did. Still not a bad movie! You know the anime Ping Pong? There is a really good live action adaption for that one, too. But you should watch the anime first. It's brilliant (looks like your average sports anime at first and it's drawn fucking ugly, but the story is ... let's say totally underrated. おすすめだ).
The only thing I didn't like about this movie was the cinematography. It looked like it was recorded with a camcorder. And everyone else looked like their anime counterpart, except for Koyuki. Anyway, great movie.
If they revealed the voice, it will ruin the whole thing. A beautiful voice is subjective. So something that sounds good to you might not sound amazing to others. Leaving the voice empty gave the audience the opportunity to use their imagination of a good voice. It made it interactive :)
