    Good stuff. For the handhelds, attach a lanyard. First you'll have always have a place to hang it, second, that tail will make it almost impossible to lose. I learned this when I lost two aluminum mini stakes in two days of trekking. Smaller dark red ones, which should've been the ones to go missing, no problem. The difference was they had string loops on them and the string wasn't a bright color. So I added lengths of orange tent cord to the others and over the next two months of travel and camping I didn't lose another stake. At home I started adding 'tails' to things like my TV remote (blue masking tape doubled over. It's worked great for a few years now. and when I pick the thing up I don't have to study it to figure out which end is which.) I've also put my iPhone on a lanyard. Since I got it in 2015 I've had it in a LifeProof waterproof case (I'm a sea kayaker) and hot glued some loops to the back and use the same orange tent cord. I've climbed mountains with no problems.
    Also, when I worked movies in the 1980s we used heavy Motorolas, they cost then $1200 each. Quarter mile max range.

    I also have the 15watt vehicle radio and I love it. I have that exact same external antenna that you showed in the video and it really gets out there. I have not tried the handhelds, but this vehicle unit is awesome. I use it more than my ham radio and my cb radio combined.

    I have those and took them up north with my brother. The clarity was great but would only reach a MAX of 500 feet. Quality would drop immediately after that distance. Only place you’re getting 38 miles must be on the moon.

    Just bought the Midland MXT275 today. Added a bigger 3db antenna and mag mount. Pretty excited to see how well it works. At least 3 other guys from my overlanding group have them.

    I clicked on this video because I recently bought the same handheld units. They feel perfect in the hand and they don't look or feel puny like the other radios in the bubble packs.

    Hey thanks for your videos, it's neat to see folks overlanding in the Texas area. I'm in Houston, so this is my home base.
    I've been researching radio communications for camping/caravans, and it seems the best advice for what radio service to use is to use what your peers are using. In your estimation, for the Texas Gulf Coast region, or even the central/southern united states in general, what is the trend between CB and GMRS? If I only have one (for now), and join a group heading out for some 4x4ing/camping, which radio service would be best for me to have to communicate with them?
    Thanks again for your time and videos. Take care!

      It seems that people are switching over GMRS. When I got these radios, my friends were still using CBs. I lend them my GMRS handhelds and they loved them, eventually switching over to these radios. Now when I got out in groups, we all have GMRS.

      @@OverlandNomad That's great. I would prefer GMRS, simply because I could at least do what you did, and hand a couple out to my family members, or interact with their FRS radios. My only sticking point was compatibility with others in my group. I think I'm gonna jump in the GMRS pool. Thank you for the input!

    2:53, what is he saying? I didn't understand him. Was he saying the radio has a squelch tail (chhht) at the end or that it needs one?

    What was the battery life like on the handheld radios

    As someone who has no experience with radios it is hard for me to figure out which option to get, the MXT275 or the X-Talker. They both seem to do the exact same job? This would mainly be used for overlanding/off-roading. Am I correct in thinking they pretty much do the same thing? If so, then would it make more sense just to get the the X-Talkers since they are handheld and portable?

    • @OverlandNomad
      @OverlandNomad  3 роки тому

      So they’re both in a simple way the same thing but the MXT275 has longer range. I use both but I use the handheld way more cuz I have three vehicles and I can just take my handheld in any of them.

    I live on the west coast of Canada, somehow I would question why any offroader in my area would even bother with any kind of 2 way radio at all, unless their work job requires one. I would love to have a CB/GMRS rig in my vehicle but if there are no other people or friends having an interest in using them too, Their kinda useless.

    so this radio is better then using CB radios

  • @jorgezuni2818
    @jorgezuni2818 4 роки тому +1

    Then they’ll find that there’s radio’s that are called CB radios no licence required and no subcription to pay -just the equipment 😅

      GMRS licenses are a one time fee and are more reliable and effective than CB.

    • @SmokeytheJeep
      @SmokeytheJeep 4 роки тому +1

      Sebby Kaiser It’s not a one-time fee, it’s a 10-year license. At $70 for you and your entire family, it’s a bargain.

      CB's are dying out in favor of the more superior GMRS and even FRS radios. Did you watch the video at all? He mentions that they used CB's in the past. And what "subscription"? There aren't any radios that require a subscription that I'm aware of.
