I’m starting to dip my toe into GMRS comms. It’s been useful for range days, hunting, and travel. FYI for anyone interested in GMRS. FCC is lowering the price of the 10yr license from $70 to $35 starting April 19th of this year.
Even in an age of Cell phones, it is nice to have a back up way to communicate. When my wife and I moved to Texas we were in separate cars so we had walkie talkies to avoid the hassle of calling on the cellphone or not being able to communicate in places with no cell service along the trip.
We were talking 10-15 miles apart at Big Bend with these. I have the +6db whip antenna on the bumper of my 4Runner. People generally use channel 19 on highway and 16 offroad if you are looking for strangers to talk to.
Have a small handheld that doesn't have very good range. Hadn't thought about a more permanent solution until watching this video. Now I really want one for my rig. I have a newer sprinter chassis so I have already been looking at alternative mounting!
this is great for me, as a truckers son and tacoma owner i could use this in so many ways. and please put another 1 of these in your gf's 4 runner be so much easier for when you 2 go off roading. hope thats not out of line, not my intentions
Ive never been happy with my CB. That'd be great upgrade for me. I like the controlls on the mike. It stops you from looking down at the base unit and keeps your head up. Thx.
This just what I need, we are going on a road trip next month. My 4Runner and two motorcycles, this will be great, especially if we are in an area with poor cell reception.
The 275 is a great unit. I already run a MXT115 which is the same power level, just has the controls on the radio not on the mic. Wife would love a stealth install of a MXT275 in her Jeep.
I bought a baofeng handheld and yes it fallen on my head also but mostly I leave it tucked in the passenger seat...I like the fact that all the controls are on the mic.
That is definitely a great starter unit that won't break the bank. I dont know much about comms but would love to learn more. Maybe a video with you and Mike (LLOD) would be awesome.
Great video... need to add this to my overland LX570. I started off with HAM but it's way more complicated than we ever really needed. Will be switching to GMRS/FRS this season
Hey Talon, I’m a fan of your videos. My video production company is the main video team for Back to Baja and we will be working with Flarespace and Storyteller overland. We will be out there filming with our Movi pro / black arm car rig. Would be stoked to grab some shots of you and your van. Anyways, great video thanks for sharing 🤙
Looks to be a nice size radio even for a SXS. I like the idea of the hard wired mobile over a handheld do to its always in the vehicle. Thank you for the video!!
This is also a great idea for using it as a base comm when others in your party go our for a hike/ride or adventure and they have a walkie. Great idea!!
I guess I need to look into GMRS again. I didn't know there was repeater systems for it as well. That's awesome! Thanks for giving me a newly sparked interest!
If you plan to use the repeater network it may be worth considering higher wattage radios so you have the strength to use more distant repeaters. I personally don’t tend to use repeaters and use my GMRS mainly for vehicle to vehicle communications when convoying so the longer range isn’t as required. I’ve found the 15 watts in the MXT275 to be more than adequate.
Another great video. Thank you for the honest review. There’s nothing worse than someone pretending to be an expert on something just to look cool. I’ve never owned a midland product yet, but this might be the first.
Great video! Considering this unit because of a recent trip where our kiddie radios were dying by the end of the day. I like how the controls are on the mic and I can tuck the rest of it away.
Great video, as I live in the country this would be a great addition just for the weather channels, also as usual travel alone would be good for safety. Great channel.
Love the idea of a hardwired radio . I’ve used the handheld ones but the batteries don’t last and don’t seem as effective in the woods. Love the channel!
Nice clean setup. I have a few of the hand helds and they are a pain to remember to keep them charged up. lol. Having a hardwired setup is the way to go.
Interesting video I just picked up two handheld ones from amazon Midland GXT x-tra talk yellow and black to add to my gear while traveling I like that one that’s a cool little unit have fun down in Baja ok 👌🏼🔥🤠🔥Camping Russ out
Ham and GMRS licensed My thoughts are, use what’s available in your area. I don’t have great GMRS coverage in my area as far as repeaters. But I really like that I can hand one to my wife or kids and they don’t have to think about freq or power It just works
Great video as always Talon. I have the MXT 400 in my truck. My wife has this same unit in her jeep. Makes for a great ride to the beach house rental or up to the mountains. Nice to have in case of a bug out situation as well. Someone will love this radio. Thanks for sharing. Safe travels
@@LexPena mxt400 definitely has more power. But if you are just trail riding with friends or even on a road trip with friends, distance probably isn’t an issue. With that said, I’ve had conversations with a guy about 30 miles away. The 275 doesn’t seem to have that kind of range
I've been wanting to get into alternate comms for a while. I bought a Baofeng handheld but haven't fully figured it out yet. That Midland radio looks quite a bit easier to use.
I was looking at this exact setup just a couple days ago so timing of your video couldn’t have been better! I’ve been using a very similar setup, just a couple handhelds. Been wanting something that can live in my truck or move to my travel trailer as a base station unit while out hiking so everyone can stay in communication. Good info 👍🏼
I have my HAM license. I’ll probably get my GMRS once the price drops. This looks like a good option. I really like how all the controls are in the mic. Comma are very important. Thanks for the video.
This seems like the perfect unit for my Tacoma. I could mount the base in the center console and run the cable for the hand unit out through the side notch. Seems like you find a great mounting location for the Sprinter.
Been doing GMRS comms for a bit while offroading//camping. Would be great to have a micromobile to give to my dad for his rig! Remember folks power doesn't matter as much as a quality and well placed antenna.
Interesting vidoe that is not an April Fools day joke... I was waiting for the punch line the whole time. Looks like a super useful radio ill be adding to my line up sometime!
Very cool way to get into comms! I really like the size of the radio, fits into those small spaces that are about useless for anything else that auto makers feel you need. Great video as always!
Just recently have been looking into comms setups. So much info and options out there. I definitely like this setup and seems simple, which is a big pro for me.
Thanks for the informative video, I like that you made using the Midland GMRS radio so simple as well as helpful in traveling with others. It will be a good to have for my "Overlanding" adventures.
Used to do comms in the Army so this was a pretty cool video to watch on comms from a civilian standpoint. Getting truck soon so looking into a setup like this for it. Great video, love the channel bro 👍
@@aaronm5149 the main difference to me besides encryption is durability. Military radios are super durable but they are clunky and heavy. I like the sleekness and size difference of some amateur radios. Need more experience with civilian radios though to have a more informed opinion.

Seems like a great simple product that just works. Thanks for the opportunity.
Pretty cool those were big in the 80's remember as a kid using them all the time aunt and uncle were big timers in that space as a hobby.

Trail/Off-road communications is a must have.
we use the handhelds for backing up the snowmobile trailer. That would be an awesome addition!!
This would be the perfect birthday gift! I can then let my friends use my handhelds on our trips to make communication easier.
This would be super useful, just like you said, for getting rid of handheld comms that I always seem to either lose or forget. Great idea!

Didn't realize how easy the GMRS is. Thanks for the video.
Great job. Not overly technical and a really down to earth video on how to install and use.
I use Midland handhelds at work, work awesome to communicate with the whole team
Ive never been happy with my CB. That'd be great upgrade for me. I like the controlls on the mike. It stops you from looking down at the base unit and keeps your head up. Thx.
I still have some of the older walkie talkies. I use them while hunting and or if I have a buddy with me. Midland makes good equipment.
Love the simplicity, and the use of a radio for communication is unparalleled, great video!! 😃
Ive heard kick ass things about the MXT275! Long time cheap Baofeng handheld user here. The Midland looks like a great option!

I live in the San Juan mountains and this would be a great help for living without any cell phone service. Keep up the great videos. Cheers.

Nice. I’ll be at Back to Baja as well. Which is why I’m watching this video, getting my GMRS setup for my STO rig!
That's a nice upgrade compared to the old Radioshack walkie talkies that I have laying around somewhere.

FYI I think the mic connections are best used for headset or earbuds when communicating with trail guides/spotters.
FYI- There are several NOAA weather channels. You can move the channels selector up and down until you find a more clear/closer channel.
Yes!!! I’ve been hoping you would do a video covering this. I just installed an icom 4100 in my rig.
