ALSO WHY IS THERE NO PAPER LUIGI AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER?
This might be early on and you get Paper Luigi later. Notice Paper Mario is the Y button that just leaves the X button which will probably be for Paper Luigi.
CarKing 114 I would hope so, but I also feel like that would be a pretty big game mechanic you'd get right away. I mean I get why there wouldn't be a second paper character since it might be redundant for the over world move set . . . but please don't neglect Luigi.

I love how everyone's complaining about how this is a poor excuse for a Paper Mario game, when if they had half a brain, they'd realize that this is really just a Mario and Luigi game that has Paper Mario characters.

TheBlimpFruit That's why everyone is complaining? You know what this could mean? That PM is dead they picked M&L as their RPG and are attempting to get PM fans into the series. This isn't a true crossover and it certainly isn't a PM game and that's what we wanted.

sinancothebest Where? It looks like Paper Mario thrown into the DT engine too me. It seems to have similar if not identical mechanics to previous M&L series if not the same. It's seems to be in a M&L DT type of world (for now) The only things I've seen related to PM are within the character itself.

We asked for Paper Mario; Nintendo (kind of) gave it to us. And on top of that, it's combined with another great RPG title... I have very high standards for this game - it looks great, a bit out-of-the-ordinary, but it looks great.
***** I was paying attention to the years of each game's release and 2016 should be the year of a new Paper Mario, I hoped and believed it'd be announced this year. Waited so long for this. I mean it's not a WiiU verison, But Mario & Luigi is a great series. I wanted both games, Now I got it ! ...Now time to be patient til Spring 2016.

Jp So far it seems like the entire Paper Mario series is a book within the Mario universe. I mean its split into "chapters" with a narrator detailing the game in between. We will have to see how this works out though.

Things I want to see in this game:
1. The return of Mr. L! PLEASE!
2. The return of Fawful and Dimentio and they team up and work together. (That would be awesome for story and final boss)
3. Good Battle System. From the looks of it, it seems good. I don't want any Stickers sticking around.
4. New, original, 3-deminsional characters
5. Partners! Please?
6. A good story arc. That's what Mario and Luigi (and Old Paper Mario),are known for
7. Very enjoyable experience. Since its not coming until next Spring I'm sure they're taking there time to make this game great. What do u guys want to see?

M&L is just a Handheld Game , not a good rpg with cutscenes like PM2
Minene Uryuu922 (previously deaththekid922) The Mario and Luigi series is a great series of RPG s that are nowhere near cheap. And the M&L series did too have cutscenes. You may have a different opinion and think Paper Mario is better but don't crap on a just as good or arguably even better series of Gamez just because it's on a handheld. You never know, maybe they will incorporate Partners somehow. But even without partners, the M&L series is one of the greatest RPG series (or gaming series on general) I've ever played and they are tons of fun. But once again it's your opinion but you shouldn't crap on other people's opinions.

Well, sadly, aside from the good battle system, none of your wishes came true.
This game is the absolute best. The moments Mario Luigi and Paper Mario share in this game melt my heart. As the #1 Paper Mario and Mario fan, it just makes me so happy to see this game exist. (And every other Mario game.)
I hope to god this has interesting original-gen villains. Those guys were the only reason I stuck around these series in the first place. There better be some oblique background reference to Fawful, Antasma, Dimentio, or the Shadow Queen. Or, y'know, a good villain that isn't Bowser.
XerxesTexasToast It is tradition in the M&L series for the final boss to be some form of Bowser. But not in Paper Mario. We'll see when we get more info.
David Jafari I'd prefer it to be something using Bowser than just straight-up Bowser. Dream Team had to declaw Antasma to pull that off, and it was disappointing. Cackletta, Fawful, and the Elder Princess Shroob stuck it out until the end, even when they did have to use Bowser.

XerxesTexasToast Actually, Dimentio would be a perfect choice of villain of this game. Remember, he's the Master of Dimensions, so he could be the reason why the Mario worlds cross-over. But obviously still slim because, ya know, Nintendo.

Seriously, both Paper Mario, and the Mario and Luigi games had great characters (especially the Paper Mario partners, which Sticker Star lacked). It would be great to see some of them again. Even if it's just for a few lines.

...In all seriousness I'd like to see Prince Peasley again, though honestly it was great that they brought back Popple for Dream Team. And hey I'm hyped to see that Starlow (I'm glad she stuck around after Bowser's Inside Story) at least makes a cameo so I guess I shouldn't be too fussy. From what I understand the Paper Mario series needs love anyways.
_Data_Drain_ Judging by how the last Paper Mario's development went down, I doubt we'll see any character from the Paper or M&L series in this.
Dadko I severely hope that's not the case. Both M&L and PM have levels of creativity in worlds and character that sticker star lacked. It'd be nice if they acknowledge games of the past with at least cameos from past characters.

If this game does any or all of the following:
*brings back Fawful (or add a new villain; I'm not TOO picky)
*has great exploration that adds to the game, rather than detract
*has a great cast of varied characters, throwbacks or otherwise
*oh, and experience points / leveling up.
Then the Mario&Luigi franchise will surely bring back Paper Mario's reputation to former glory.
...But.... if the game does ANY of the following:
* has sticker-based gameplay that limits movesets
* Makes Bowser completely forgettable (though from the trailer, I think we'll be fine)
* Has Boss Fights that almost REQUIRE a one-use attack (again, stickers)
* Has an absolutely confusing world that is a chore to traverse, rather than promote exploration
*Has next to no characters, or has only Toad NPCs to talk to (which I'm starting to fear will happen, based on this trailer)
*pointless random encounters that only give coins
Then Paper Mario will absolutely ruin the reputation of the Mario&Luigi franchise.
I speak as a fan of both spin-off series, and has played every title in both games. I am both incredibly hyped and incredibly fearful of how this game will turn out.

+No Name You can't prove that Fawful is dead. What if he somehow survived the explosion and is still in Bowser's body? Maybe the Dream Stone caused Bowser to gain such immense strength because of Fawful?
This whole presentation was pretty low in terms of anything major but the smaller things like these were nice overall.

***** The problem is that none of those were new. We already knew a fair amount about them before, ESPECIALLY Xenoblade. We didn't really learn anything new about it.
***** But they were revealed at E3 last year, so their inclusion in this year's presentation kind of felt redundant. Nintendo has revealed so much of these games already; the wow factor is gone. My problem with the presentation this year is that (regarding the Wii U) it felt like Nintendo, not having anything truly appealing beyond what has already been revealed, just shrugged and shuffled away...

The fair/poor reviews a Japan-only release got in 2012 probably intimidated them from the series, and I doubt they'd bring back the series after the crew was disbanded. …Then again, I said the same thing about a crossover between _Mario & Luigi_ and _Paper Mario…_ Suikoden VI is officially predicted by JustZumBros Studios! …At least, it's predicted by half of JustZumBros Studios...

I didn't mean better than the last Paper Mario games, I mean it was better than both Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, and Paper Mario Sticker Star. Both those games were rather disappointing and tedious for me. Without a doubt the first 3 Paper Mario games were great, but Sticker Star was just terrible, and had horrible replay value.
Zachary Erickson I liked Dream Team's overworld segments and rpg fights, but I did not care for the numerous side scrolling dream sequences, the faulty gyro required controls, the giant battles, the annoying NPCs, and the unskippible tutorial sections.
SpongicX Have you even played Bowser's Inside Story? It as well had tons of 2D side-scrolling sequences and Giant battles that were awesome, but not as interesting as Dream Team's and unlike dream team, Giant battles did NOT have bros./special attacks.
ryhansen1 That's the only one out of the 4 that I haven't played. I had Super Star Saga, Partners In Time, and Dream Team. I liked Super Star Saga the most. While Partners in Time was a fun concept, and had better graphics, that one was a bit disappointing, because it was too short.
So does this mean no "Paper Mario Wii U"? There were plenty of rumors of a new Paper Mario title, but is this really it? I love "Paper Mario" and "Mario & Luigi RPG", but I'm a little worried for this cross over. It might be fantastic. I'm going to buy it regardless, but I worry some times. At least "Mario & Luigi RPG" has a real level up system unlike "Sticker Star".

Ryan S. You're likely right. But isn't it sad that I felt no hype when I saw this trailer? I am the HUGEST fan of both of these series, and yet I felt no excitement, only concern. Maybe it's because Sticker Star was a bust, and Dream Team wasn't my favorite in the series (Still good, but it had its issues in my opinion).
StacheBros Whatever the case may be, I think this will already put Paper Mario out of that Sticker Star gutter - The battle system is back (since M&L's is really Paper Mario's with a difference or two), it's heavily implied Paper Bowser talks again, and one more character into the usual 2-person play of M&L makes for more puzzle/overworld opportunities :3
Ryan S. There's no denying that this looks WAAAAAYYY better than Sticker Star, but I will admit that there were parts of "Dream Team"s story that I flat out hated. "Dream Team" had the best battle system of its series (except the easy mode option), but I feel it had the weakest story, which is one of the reasons I worry about "Paper Jam".
***** I think it would be cool if there is a paper world and a "real" world to explore. That would be a nice addition to this game!

The fans wanted both a M&L game and a Paper Mario game. Instead we get this which is even better. Who knows, there might be a big part of the game where you're JUST paper mario.
Dalmane I see it as more of a compromise. I mean there are no stickers in sight and it uses a Mario and Luigi style battle system. It also seems to have funny dialog. What we need now is an amazing story and this could be better than any Paper Mario 5/U we could've gotten.
@Franknbean. You forgot there are silent protagonists and talking protagonists. This will make some funny humor and it will just be awesome.

Me, on the other hand, is stoked for this. :) I don't care if both series had a bum rap because of a few lackluster games, or it's not what people expected, it's a *flipping* crossover; I can't ignore that! JoeDan54 Right. Back to the game, I'm liking what I see, especially how Paper Mario operates. Now I finally see why fans want him in Smash, and if he is going to be in, Papercraft Mario or the Trio attack ought to be his Final Smash. :)

ShitakeMusromSociety I know. I had always considered the Mario RPGs to be in the same continuity as the platformers, and that the Mario characters were the same all around... but now this? I feel very conflicted about this. I like the idea of crossing over the gameplay styles of Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi (that, in and of itself, sounds like the perfect Mario RPG gameplay-wise), but the notion of Mario and Paper Mario (and their respective cohorts and counterparts) being totally different characters just sounds so... wrong to me, and I think it ruins the extra lore and story elements that the RPGs were giving to Mario as a whole.
KingdomHeartsBrawler I like to think that both universes have had their respective Mario's (and Luigi's) go on the same quests. Just... one universe being more papery.
That is plausible. I don't know... I've always thought it was all in ONE universe, just that Nintendo decided to portray some of Mario's adventures in a papery style, and some others in the wacky Mario & Luigi style.
I WANT A TRUE PAPER MARIO GAME. LIKE WHY NINTENDO. HERE...I GOT A STORY FOR YOU.
Bowser kidnaps princess peach. Mhm. Mhm. But not for himself. He did it for a new villian called....dr. evil waffle. Ok the name can change. But anyways...mario is on a quest to gather 8 stars which are children to stars of the thousand year door. And along the way...mario collects 64 black stars which he must brings back to some scientist house to purify. The stars become golden and the blackness becomes black gloop and it is preserved in a container for analysis. The purifying of the stars and the 8 stars rescued are enough to open the WORLDDDDDD'S DOOR. OOOOOO sounds nice doesn't it. And it will lead to bowser and dr. Evil waffle. Bowser gets defeated and runs off. He finds the scientist...steals the gloop and brings it back. Dr. Evil waffle tells bowser to drink it and he transform to giga bowser.
I am done with the story for now.
And mario will have 10 partners with 2 being secret. And THE GAME WILL HAVE A 100 LEVELS BATTLING PIT.

miimario44 You know I'm starting to see your point with the Giant Battles at this point. Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team had some good reason about having to go giant. In this...Well granted we aren't given much context to how this giant Paper Mario thing was made and why they're here, so it might be better to wait a bit to learn more and get a better context for it, but still at this point I can't shake the feeling the Giant battles are becoming a sort of token element they have to keep bringing in after people liked it in Bowser's Inside Story and it starting to kinda get a bit too silly.

what if the next game was called Mario&Luigi: Rival Ruckus
and you controlled Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. You would use the A button for Mario, B for Luigi, Y for Wario, and X for Waluigi.

Only thing I didn't get was the lack of Paper Luigi. Other than that looks like a solid surprise.
They should've added the Super Mario RPG universe too with the character being in the same graphics as that game. Then we can play Geno too.

I loved this game. Although it had obvious flaws and it was probably the worst M&L RPG its my favorite out of all the games.

So, some thoughts on this.
I hope the original characters, including villains, from the two series will appear, besides Starlow who is in the trailer. My dream game is one in which Fawful and Dimentio team up, but sadly I think, yet again, Bowser will be the antagonist.
Too many Toads, not enough other Paper NPCs such as friendly Goombas, Koopas and original species from the series. Mario & Luigi side of things looks good, I just hope it's actually an RPG and not a glorified Toad hunt (judging from the HUD in most of the footage)
Other than that, this game looks great and I hope to upload a video containing my in-depth thoughts soon.
I would prefer it if they had some entirely new villain. One that hasn't appeared in any game yet.
Jason Jungreis I would love that too. But since this is a crossover it should still be full of references to both series, not just the main series characters and Starlow. Every enemy I've seen so far is from either NSMB or Super Mario 3D series, excluding the classic Goombas and Koopas. Nothing from Dream Team, the first three Paper Mario games, etc.
I think that although Bowser is probably the villain, having both Bowsers team up will make things interesting enough.
Also I'm thinking collecting all of the Toads gives you a new special move.
