Hey Gary! (Max here) We completely agree with your conclusions and overall opinion on the machine and how it compares to windows laptops. We are HUGE Apple fans ourselves like you and Rene but we also don't like Apple making sketchy moves without telling us that will affect some people. This has definitely gotten out of hand and I wish we didn't have to make as many videos on these topics but as our viewers and debunkers pushed us on our findings we had to explore more. The high temps won't affect most people (but we'll see long-term reliability later) but this has been a test that we've done for years on many macs and PC's and we've never seen this behavior, and the M1 13" MBP and M1 Pro 14" didn't do this either. Granted most people will not be editing 8K RAW on this MBP but with lower preview resolution it is capable of it (and we tested with FCX not Resolve). The same fan they've been using for years isn't good enough to fully cool a chip that uses 50% more power overall, but I understand using a new fan would lower Apple's profit margins on this very profitable machine. The same thing with SSDs, definitely not for video editing (as you said your server is slower as is ours) but where it matters is RAM swap. After so many people asking we got an 8GB/512 model and the difference is starting. We personally think that at no point should the M2 be slower than the M2 but there are many now where that happens. Will regular people that don't need the M2 notice that? No, but at the same time it doesn't make it right. Getting 16GB of RAM and 512GB REALLY helps and makes the M2 chip shine, but as you and I have been saying, at that point it makes sense to get the M1 Pro. This machine is better than a windows laptop, but Apple should have done just a few things to make it shine where it should.
Did you ever get the 256GB/16GB model? I was hoping to see that as it would help people decide whether to upgrade the storage, RAM or both. That was my main gripe, that is a baseline test and would have been very useful for your audience. It may have been that you did not get that option which is fair enough? Anyway, good find with the slower NAND read on the M2's, something that may never have been noticed as in real life most people would not notice, but still, good to know, and for a small niche group, may have helped them rethink getting the base if they were hoping to get away with 8GB of RAM for hardcore work. Hopefully, Apple will comment on this sooner rather than later so we know why?

yup. Apple didn't do right. if they didn't mess up the ssd in the upcoming m2 air, how interesting...I guess the m2 pro would be specifically designed to make the m2 air seem all the more amazing (they got all those chassises laying around anyway). if they did put the ssd downgrade in it...it really is just greed, especially since the base is usually the only one you can get your hands on. all for a few dollars per machine.

Thanks for this! I feel like so many reviews are done in a vacuum almost looking for something to be wrong. Pushing the pro to extremes that don’t work in the real world. Honestly, I cannot wait for the air and hope it’s just as good or better than previous models. Thanks for the amazing video.
@@TheEverydayDad Couldn’t agree more! Questions: for an everyday MacBook Air user which configuration would you suggest? Is 10 core really needed especially since the air doesn’t have a cooling fan and is 16gb memory needed? Thanks!
For what it's worth, I was able to recreate the infamous "Max Tech thermal throttling" in my most recent video. But as you said, it's a ridiculous claim to make because no one is rendering 8K Canon raw footage on these laptops (and I believe FCP has a software bug that might be causing those temps). In all other workflows it performs without issue. The SSD however is a big slap in the face to M2 MacBook Pro buyers. Speeds should at the very least stay the same in an upgraded model IMO, not get slower. You definitely can notice this during multi-tasking where swap memory and physical RAM is maxed out (which is extremely easy to do on these 8GB RAM base models).
@@FJA--- Yeah that's it, because the 256GB M2 models are using only a single flash memory chip whereas the M1's were using two 128GB chips and utilizing dual channel memory access.
I love how you basically shut down everyone else’s hate rants! Your opinion is honestly one of the only ones that matters to me in the world of MacBook. Thanks for your honest opinions!
Enjoyed the review. The 13" Pro has always been a solid machine. It isn't everyone's cup of tea. It isn't cutting edge. It has a lot of the old. It has some new guts. It is (like you said), the same thing but better. I need portability, enough power, and appreciate the security blanket of the long battery life. And active cooling isn't needed that often, but I like that it is there (my M1 13" Pro only spooled up the fan a few times in the past year, so ... insurance not daily need). I've owned 13" Pros for a long, long time. I loved the M1, and I passed that on to a family member who wanted to move into Mac from PC. Was a good excuse for me to get the same but better. Let those who want the Air and its sexy new features get the Air. For me, long live the solid 13" block of aluminum.
Thanks for balancing the controversy. Regardless whether it affects the real world usage, I don't agree with Apple silently making the Gen2 SSD slower than Gen1.
After watching so many videos talking about the macbook pro 13, your content has been the most critical to my purchase decition. Thank you so much, from argentina! :)
Thanks for keeping it real! I really appreciate your practical approach. Usability > Benchmarks. I just pulled the trigger on the 14” M1Pro (this will be my first Mac, currently using a Surface Pro 7), for me it was the screen and the ports more than processor that made up my mind. I think any of the current generation will be way more power than I need, but I do feel confident that I’ve bought a system that will be strong for the long haul. Now to impatiently watch the tracker…
Thank you for this review. I have been looking at reviews on the net and all of them have been about pushing it to its limit rather than looking at whether it’s useful or not.
Thank you!! I love my M2 MacBook Pro. I am one of the few that utilizes this laptop for general productivity. It flies through tasks and love the design! The 14in is just to thick.
I would have bought the 14 if I had an extra $600. I maxed out the m2 pro 13 because I was over waiting. I got an education discount. It's still way more computer than I needed and is my first mac. I can't say I'm disappointed.
The negativity of the MacBook Pro 13 design is also quite... Puzzling. I thought that the current iteration actually first came out in 2020. Yes, the design first came out with the Touch Bar in 2016, I think, but the 2020 iteration is important because that was the year that :- 1. Apple chopped a bit of the left side of the touch bar and added the physical escape key. 2. They put in the magic keyboard, replacing the problematic butterfly version. And, basically to me, the design of the Pro 13 is still better than 80% of the windows laptop available out there.
I actually got this a couple days ago and it's my first Mac and I am a total nooby to it. It's a learning curve but I love it. Touchbar is awesome for me.
I finally switched from pc to apple, I was using apple phone, watch etc but wasn’t ready to switch the laptop yet. Still learning how to use the MacBook system. Today I just got the MacBook Pro M2 13
I just really love the way you break things down in your videos. Straight and to the point, plenty of facts along with your insightful and well thought out opinions. Your channel continues to be the go-to for buying advice and overall product information. Thank you sir!
Your videos are great, and this is probably my favorite. Brilliant. This video is hands down one of the most practically useful I’ve seen on the MBP M2. Keep up the excellent work.
Glad to see a realistic video on this. There's always been differences in SSD functions, which is why I plead for people not to buy the base model. Especially true in the PC world, which is full of low-end everything. Dell's done a decent job on their XPS line of notebooks, and their prices are pretty much comparable to Macs. I haven't bough a computer with less than a 1 TB drive since 2008. We have a 2020 MBA with 8 GB and 512 GB storage, works fine, never warm, it's plenty fast for what it has to do. Too many UA-camrs in all kinds of product reviews going for the gold.
Cant wait for your thoughts on the M2 air. I trust your videos and will definitely take your reccomendations into account as I'm planning on buying a new macbook heading into college.
Here in a daily 32c climate the MBP 13 M2 looks to be a better option than a fan-less design. U agree? The MBA M2 looks vulnerable over time and the MBP 14 inch is overkill for my requirements and too pricey. I have a dying 2014 MBA 13 inch.
Been using a RAZER as my daily driver for over a year…I miss MacBooks. I’m going back. The RAZER has a great GPU and all, but I’m tired of the ridiculous fan noise. Turn it on? Fans start up. Do absolutely anything on it? Fan sound. Not to mention the cluster fuck that is windows. Gaming? Get a PC. Everything else? Get a Mac. I’m going back to one, and will probably dual wield laptops.
There needs to be a LOVE option for this video! I'm storing a lot of files for my studio on a Samsung T7... it's much slower than the SSD in the 13" MBP and I haven't had an issue yet. Usable is the key as you note. We did opt for a 14" before this came out because once we would have upgraded the 13" it was too close not to get the better display, multiple monitor support, ports etc... The negatives are the same as the M1 IMHO. Yet, I know a number of people looking to buy this simply for the TouchBar... if they love it that much, go for it!
AGREED! TBH after a week using this macbook M2 pro - no issues for thermal and slow SSD, im using this for Dota2 playing game 4hrs straight and no thermal issues, other task running smooth as hell. IDK why ppl hate this Macbook pro so so much. Adios!
How it the overall performance? confused between this and macbook air m2. I'm software developer and looking for a personal laptop that I'll use for non work things, sometimes coding
@@dony344 overall perfomance is superb for me, im not using for coding. So im not really sure bout this. But i can suggest u go for M1 Pro or at least this macbook pro. Does coding required fan for thermal? If yes u can skip all Air model. Well at least for Pro u have higher GPU and additonal fan.
This is great thank you. I’ve purchased an M2 Pro base model about 3 days ago. It’s amazing! I don’t have a 8K tv or phone so 4K editing is perfect. People can really exaggerate. Your everyday user doesn’t push to such extremes to edit. We’re not all UA-camrs 🤦♂️ thank you for this video!
The MacBook Pro M2 13" is for pro-level-users (who need the active cooling) who cannot afford the jump to over 2100€ that a base MacBook Pro 14" costs where I live. If you live in the US the choice is easier, but not every country has an Apple Certified Refurbished store to score a great deal on a MacBook.
Thanks, Gary….not buying this as my M1 MB Air has been a solid machine, but wanted to say that 3:38 is the perfect sum up. Fact that I am watching UA-cam videos and doing web browsing for majority time means “throttling” is not a concern and I suspect only a VERY small portion of folks are pushing these machines to limits.
I agree, M2 is a nice stepping stone forward but there's really nothing there for M1 owners to think about the trade-up. Honestly I see myself staying on my M1 Air for a long time. It's mostly an away-from-desk computer to supplement my gaming PC so yeah, I have a feeling I will get years out of the thing. For what I use it for the thing is just a brilliant machine. I still say the M1 Air is the best bang-for-buck computer on the market.
I agree, I always used windows, and I still do. I particularly like windows 11, but I decided to buy the M1 MacBook air, it is great, I love it and just like you, I feel that I will use it for a long time
Very fair clear review. Very funny too. It did go to over 100ºc I see. The point of the Max tech tests was to show the M2 under extreme load (not real world use) to see if it throttled; a test which the M1 MBP passed. It also showed the ssd in base 125GB was slower than M1 MBP. I think people needed to know that before they bought. I liked that you pointed out what you don't like The M2 MBP for other reasons. Generally better to go for 14" M1 pro MBP or M1 MBP. All eyes will be on the M2 MacBook Air upcoming release!
Thanks for the thermal testing. The lack of TB4 on the upcoming M2 Air is really disappointing. I bit the bullet and got a DisplayLink-adapter for the workaround. This method in theory caps out at 4K60, but those adapters are crazy expensive. 1440p60 is more attainable. I wish I wouldn't have to, but decided I really wanted a thin n' light and also really want two monitors for work.
Thank you. You, Rene Ritchie, Mark Ellis and a couple of others are just trying to review the laptop, NOT feed the red hot hatred of All Things Apple we know exist. Don’t lose your sanity by rolling around in the muck with them.
But, But, But, GARY!! You gotta also put it in an oven while pouring coffee on it to make it fail! See, you can do 20 insane things on it that no one would ever expect or normally do on it, but it still sucks! LOL. These freaking people...
Gary, they are talking about computers with low memory cars. When you buy the Mac you need to upgrade the memory cards. My 14" does get hot due to that My 13" with more memory does everything fast. No Fan going on.
This was a very good review. What, I like the most about the M-2 model is, that it helps to lower the price of the earlier M-1 processor version. In about 6-months, you should be able to pick up as used a 13-inch M-1, MacBook Pro with RAM of 16GB, and a 1TB for around $900. This is the time when, I might have to buy one (smile...smile).
I just bought that model on eBay for £920 with zero battery cycles and is 9 moinths old, opened but bought for a project but never used. So you are right. The M2 is better but it would not be better for a £900 budget!
I had Macbook Pro 2015 and upgraded to this (2022 version) in 2023, and of course I am very happy. The ports of course the bad part. I will buy another Macbook Pro (2029 version) in 2030 :) 1 year gap is for economics.
Thanks for the advice, I think I'll just save a few hundred more and go for the 14" MacBook Pro, since it has the better features and it runs the programs I need. But by then, there might be a M3 MBP on the horizon so I will continue to wait. My MacBook Air works just fine for the time being, and it's a 2017 Intel version.
I feel like apple made the m2 air more expensive simply because if people look at the pro, it’s more expensive and people would be less likely to buy an older model because it’s older. So people would buy the m2 air over the m1 due to it being the most attractive
I agree, don't care about raw power. My base 14" MBP lags once in awhile and it drives me crazy! Not sure if it's because I'm running Synergy (a software KVM) or due to having 130 Chrome tabs open at the same time.... ps Gunpla in the background? Cool!
I have a macbook pro mid 2012, with SSD and RAM updates, which makes it very functional. I'm considering buying a 512Gb 13 m2 macbook pro at a discount, it's the same price as a 256gb one, is it worth it to have it for 5-6 years?
Without hacks, you can actually have two or more monitors on M1 and M2 MBP/Air by using a displaylink compatible dock and installing their driver. This solution requires that you do your research, because some models of displaylink dock have problems with connected USB devices on occasion. My Dell D6000 dock has this issue, sometimes I have to unplug/replug it 8 times to get my USB devices working.
Which one best? 13" MacBook Pro M2 or 14" MacBook Pro M1? 13" MBP M2 with 16gb RAM, 512gb ssd and 14" MBP base model. I'm an Interior Designer. I'll use SketchUp, vray, Blender, UE5, C4D, Photoshop softwares. So which one to buy? Please suggest me.
So much looking forward to your MBA 2 review since I'm sitting on a 2016 MBP13. MBA1 or MBA2... either will probably be a sweet upgrade, but still curious.
What this youtuber claimed in the video about the machine did not thermal-throttle is not correct. Since the name, it’s rated as a pro-machine it should run pro-software without any issue. However, for the MBP 13 or even the MBP 14, I can easily bump the temperature to 100 with all threads of number crunching while using default fan settings. The M2 is just a more cache more frequency chip can never pass this test. For those who ask why I am still using these machines, it’s because I can use third party software the ramp up the fan manually and effectively there is no thermal issue.
In the intial few minutes, I thought "Here comes Apple's PR outreach to influencers".....but, finally, your credibility (not Apple's) restored. Cheers !
I made similar comments on the videos of other UA-camrs, who had their hair set on fire complaining about how awful the M2 machines are based on a couple of tests that most people will never do. If you’re doing Red Raw 8K on a regular basis, why are you buying an entry-level machine? This is stuff people were buying Mac Pros for just a year ago. Granted this has the name, Pro, in it, but this is not in the class of the other MBP’s. It has the exact same price as the equivalently equipped MacBook Air M2. Granted I have zero interest in one of these since I have a 16” M1 Max MBP, but people were seriously being panicked by an issue most people will never care about.
Nobody asked Apple for this. At lease make it the 16inch version. We already have the 13 Pro M1 and there's absolutely no need to upgrade to this. Waiting till October for a refresh 16inch pro

Apple doesn’t have a 5nm fabrication process. TSMC does. Apple has a very clean and efficient chip design, but the credit for fitting it into a 5nm package is all TSMC.
The pricing is ridiculous for this tech. I love the design - the small footprint (for a Pro) and bar. Moreover, my i7 13 Pro screen is brighter than my 14 M2 max screen - and for whatever reason is a more vivid viewing experience. But the price is unacceptable. Apple needs to revamp their marketing department with folks grounded in reality.
I have been using my MacBook Air (M1) for 2 years - for day to day task 99% of consumers will not see any slowdown... These chips are so head of their time and very powerful... I get consistently over 13 hours of battery with few hours of video calls and lots of word, excel , webs systems, UA-cam, Spotify and several other apps - never had an issue... It seems like they had pro 13 bodies sitting around and decided this would be a way to get rid of them. I currently have no laptop and am torn between the m1 air, waiting for m2 air, or shelling out the extra money for an m1 pro 14. The pricing structure along with the messaging from most influencers is clearly meant to push people up to the $1999 pro 14, but in reality I honestly believe an m1 air would be fine for my needs, but I would always kinda wish I had a better screen and larger ssd which again is because of Apple's marketing and internet influencers not because they are actually "needs" for my use case

I think I’m the only “apple” youtuber that uses Davinci resolve 🤣
I've seen that people say that the problem of the slow SSD is only with the 256 gb and with the 512 and up the R/W speeds are where they should be.
@@FJA--- Yeah that's it, because the 256GB M2 models are using only a single flash memory chip whereas the M1's were using two 128GB chips and utilizing dual channel memory access.
Exactly what I wanted. Touchbar and battery and formfactor. Just for writing. Perfect.
I bought the m2 MacBook Pro yesterday and I love it despite the old design
Thanks for balancing the controversy. Regardless whether it affects the real world usage, I don't agree with Apple silently making the Gen2 SSD slower than Gen1.
That's because you're an ethical person unlike some of these Apple opologists making these videos.
@@shadowsplinter1would help your argument if you could spell basic words.
Bro if you are reading my comment please reply… i want to buy m2 pro 13inch and still confused please tell me, is it worth buying…
@@niranjanpawar6067 Did you get it?
I would have bought the 14 if I had an extra $600. I maxed out the m2 pro 13 because I was over waiting. I got an education discount. It's still way more computer than I needed and is my first mac. I can't say I'm disappointed.
The negativity of the MacBook Pro 13 design is also quite... Puzzling. I thought that the current iteration actually first came out in 2020. Yes, the design first came out with the Touch Bar in 2016, I think, but the 2020 iteration is important because that was the year that :-
I love the dialog with Yuryev brothers :)
Brilliant.
i uppgraded to this model from my mid 2015 macbook pro.
I particularly like windows 11, but I decided to buy the M1 MacBook air, it is great, I love it and just like you, I feel that I will use it for a long time
I just got mines in the mail and i personally love it
I would still suggest the M1 Mac Air, it’s just too good. OR wait for the MBA M2 to release.
Yep that’s what I say in the video
@@TheEverydayDad haha! I HAD to comment before it gets sooo full lol! I didn’t know 😅
4:05 wow Gary first time seeing you with your cap off, you are so ROUND. And I love you so much
Very fair clear review.
This is the only M2 Macbook Pro review that matters.
I’m liking this new video format 👍
Thank you. You, Rene Ritchie, Mark Ellis and a couple of others are just trying to review the laptop, NOT feed the red hot hatred of All Things Apple we know exist. Don’t lose your sanity by rolling around in the muck with them.
This week has definitely been one of those that try the ol’ sanity 😅
The M2 MacBook Pro 13 should have 16GB and 512GB. Then the pricing will make sense
Cool!
You're the only one to not hai troubles with m2 overheating and fan really high speed
I don't think your love for M1 macbook won't die any time soon.
A very fair and detailed review. Thanks Gary!
This was hilarious. I love your tests and annoyance with the internet.
I have a macbook pro mid 2012, with SSD and RAM updates, which makes it very functional. I'm considering buying a 512Gb 13 m2 macbook pro at a discount, it's the same price as a 256gb one, is it worth it to have it for 5-6 years?
No Gary. Everyone is not a video editor. Other professionals or people do exist in this world.
Informative, well communicated, with wit to boot.
Cheers - can't wait for your look at the M2 MBA - real world experience counts!
Gary How about M1 pro? I am a freshman and I really like the touchbar! Should I buy?
Awesome and great video 👍🏻
Just a short question, which software do you use for your video in with the changing background.
Thanks
Amazing review!!! Loved it!
MBA1 or MBA2... either will probably be a sweet upgrade, but still curious.
maybe your unit is superpowered and can manage the thermal packaging provided(?)
Thanks for the thermal testing and mentioning everything straight up. I now am leaning towards the MBP 14!
I recreated your tests, and i was hitting 101 Celsius on the 4k encode
So do i have a lemon or whats up
In the intial few minutes, I thought "Here comes Apple's PR outreach to influencers".....but, finally, your credibility (not Apple's) restored.
Would you recommend the macbook air M2 16GB RAM or the macbook PRO M2 8GB RAM for video editing?

Great video! Quick question: what do you do with all the computers and equipment you buy? You can't really use them all.......or...can you?
Sometimes these UA-camrs exaggerate every little things they do not consider common man... Never... Which is why I recommend watch owners reviews ( Who does not do this for living)
Thanks for sharing. Do you happen to use a base model 8 GB/256 GB M1?
@@mysticforce8036 My model is - M1 Air with 16 GB of RAM and 256 SSD. However I have been checking my RAM usage for very long - Very few times have seen go above 7 GB of use...
I am watching this thinking about the m2 air. Everyone says the m2 pro overheats. But here we are saying it doesn’t. Back at square 1
i wish apple would have just used materials they used for this to push more supply of m2 air sooner. mines not going be in my hands until next month
But for amateur hobbyist photo processing is it gonna be okay and overheat?

Amazing video as always. I'm a student and I'm on a budget. Should I just get the m1 macbook pro for school and stuff? Cause the m2 one is much more expensive in my area. Would the m1 pro still get software updates and keep up for 5-6 years?
Just a classic price structuring by Apple which you have shown in this video. "Ahh might as well get the 14"
Yeah I get why they updated the internals of this laptop, but the rest of their lineup has moved on while the 13 pro is standing in place.
