@ravenhoec9917 that might be the case. They're mostly used in cases where an infection from human intervention is highly likely to kill a person. For example, a burn victim. If a burn victim were to have complications, maggots might be used to clean tissues that are sensitive or too delicate for a human to clean.

Maggots actually are very beneficial in the medical field in specific situations. They have lab grown maggots that are sterile, the thing about maggots is that they only eat rotten dead decaying flesh. So if a patient has a very nasty infected wound with a lot of dead flesh, maggots can be packed in the wound to remove all of the Dead infected flesh, leaving behind fresh new skin and or muscles to start the healing process with a lower rate of reinfection. Very cool stuff but probably feels really weird for the patient 😅

There was no injury or trauma and it was really weird that it just existed. Doctor thought it was a cysts at first but when they did the surgery, it was just blood. If you have one of those conditions I understand "blood letting," but the better solution is to donate blood. Save two lives. Actually, for persistent and large ulcers, sterile maggot therapy is safe, effective, and much more comfortable for the patient. The maggots only eat dead tissue and bacteria which leaves a clean wound. They remove and change out the maggots every 24-48 hrs or something, so there's not enough time for them to pupate. Otherwise the ulcers have to be cleaned and debrided with tools to remove the dead tissue.
As a phlebotomist who’s gone through schooling and has been drawing blood for years now, I know I’d have to mentally send myself to a different dimension in order not have a panic attack as the patient. Something about it free flowing just rubs me the wrong way..
@Lauren Elkin Always anchor the vein, make sure the bevel is facing up...umm release the rubber tourniquet BEFORE taking the needle out cause the blood will spurt or pool out fast, recap or push the protective sheath up on butterfly needles or straight needles right away when you take the needle out before throwing in the sharps container, dont PUSH the cotton ball down after taking needle out just have the pt lightly hold it there while you get the coban ready to wrap on their arm some use band-aids...those are the important parts I know when I learned phlebotomy in my CMA trade
There is still a place for leeches and maggots in medicine. Leeches are used when you need to increase blood flow to an area, like the tip of the nose after a rhinoplasty, to prevent necrosis. Maggots are used to debride dead tissue without surgery since maggots only eat dead tissue and leave living tissue alone.
Definitely! Leeches are also super useful in reattaching severed digits. Maggot debridement therapy is effective. The science is with these little guys.

Not sure what’s going on in video. But using medical grade maggots is a well respected treatment for cleaning wounds if certain types. The doctor should know that.
They tryna get the forbidden fruit juice 💀
This reminds me of hearing a story about Peter Lorre in Spain. His blood pressure was so high it was at the life-threatening level of massive brain aneurysm- Def Con 1. A doctor applied leaches all over him and dropped his blood pressure down to managable *for him, I presume * levels.
I've never seen blood stream out of a forehead like that.
My son fell when he was 5. Hit the side of his head and literally said, “I’M OK MA!” Didn’t cry or anything. We got in a cab drive about 18 minutes ride to home. When I took his hood off his head, blood had coagulated and I obviously unpluggef what has already clotted. It didn’t pour like that but it was definitely running. Blood was all over his shirt 😮I was beyond shocked because he never even said he feel anything wet or anything.
Leaches to the scalp will never EVER help with high blood pressure or an aneurysm.
