2014 Hyundai Sonata Turbo 0-60 MPH & Hot Lap Review

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 Hyundai Sonata Turbo is a family sedan with a big difference. It has a turbocharged engine that produces just over 270 HP. That's a lot for a family hauler. Does this mean that it is faster on the track than the Mazda6?
In another accurate, fun and informative TFLcar review we not only find out how fast it will lap the TFLcar test race track but also how fast it can sprint from 0-60 MPH.

Let me try to clear up some things about this car. I have a limited 2013 turbo, the car is fast especially on the highway in its stock form.
*Brake boosting does not work on this car, if you try to do this you will get a slower launch! The ecu will limit boost to save the transmission.
*Eco mode get overridden if you ever floor the gas pedal.
*The factory suspension and tires suck! They use low friction tire compound to get better mpg rating, which are slippery as hell with the slightest hint of moisture on the ground. I upgraded my factory tires from 225/45/18 to 245/45/18 continental dsw and it made a world of a difference. All the factory suspension needs to handle 10X better is an upgraded rear stabilizer bar and a front strut bar. The factory suspension has massive body roll which the aforementioned mods take care of. The front brakes are undersized if you partake in spirited driving, a swap from another hyundai vehicle xg300 can take care of that. With these mods alone will give the other competitors a run for there money and the car can run in the hgh 5 to low 6 second range.
*They now sell chips and tunes for this car which can get you an additional 40+ hp to the wheels on 93 octane, try doing that with any n/a competitors like an accord v6.
*If you can't tell I love the car, I outrun cars that I shouldn't, and they get a big surprise wake up call from my sleeper sonata.
Pok Booken same. I have a 2011 turbo. Took down a Camaro RS
Sorry I may be late. The tires will fit the stock 18" rims and make your car look beefy.
How has your experience been with the engine? I want to buy one of these but I'm worried about the engines going out.
Pok Booken , what chip and tune?
I have the 2014 sonata 2.0t. what brand front strut bar and rear sway bar do you recommend?
We had the 2011 Sonata Limited. We loved it a lot, we couldn't find a better car than it for the money (back in mid 2010 when we got it). We went on many road trips and NEVER let is down. 35mpg was great! Unfortunately we traded it in about a week ago for the new Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk because we wanted to go off roading and the 4X4 is great for where I live.
The turbo engine sounds exactly the same as the 2.4 naturally aspirated engine mine had. Overall I would recommend the current Sonata, however I'd tell them to wait for the 2015 model.
I was going to get this 2014 until I saw the 15' which is what im waiting for. August cant come soon enough.
+MrVnick1 I have a 2013 sonata SE with 2.4, and I love it.
Slap the gear shifter into manual mode. It will hold the gear to Higher RPMs. When the he car hits the redline, it will shift on its own even in manual mode. I use it like a sport mode. It seems to launch faster this way. I live at sea level and it is very quick here, but noticed how sluggish it got when we went to Wyoming. All in all, its a fun family car..
I did believe we were gonna be suprised and the difference was the 270hp despite its lack luster suspension tuning...Thanks Roman for the review
Brake boosing only hurts the 0-60 on this car. It can easily can do 6s if you know how to do it.
Jake Tuohy sure this man dont drive this car . i have one
exactly - i've got the 2.0t SE model and it can totally do 6s
I have the 2.0T and this car is QUICK!
My 2.4 can do low sevens 😂😂
@@elcharlybrown I have one and I don't hate it..
Never brake boost these turbo sonatas. The computer detunes the boost by 50%. I ran 14.6 -1/4mile by mashing the gas vs 15.4 by brake boost. No wonder roman achieved over 8 secs
liquidsilver1941 you mean vaccum, because at brakeboost your making vaccum until brake is released then u make boost.
Roman, is absolutely LOVE to see you guys get the new 2014 VW Passat 1.8TSI and do a hot lap. Would be great to see how I stacks up to the Sonata, and the Jetta. Thanks for all your hard work guys!
Keep in mind that the 2015 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.0 Liter turbo engine will have reduced horsepower and torque, due to fuel efficiency requirements. Hopefully the car chassis is much lighter than the current generation model.
Nice review, actually surprised by the track time, as it is a heavy car, i guess those horses are not just for show :p
Good job cant wait for that white x5 to be reviewd
If you brake boost this car the ecu cuts boost to 10psi as a max
2012 I have has made it to 60 in 5.9 stock with stock airbox and 87octane fuel when its about 40 degrees outside. In the Summer when its pushing 90 degrees its 6.6 to 60. Testing at this altitude is going to make all cars look like crap. The newer Theata Engine was reduced from 274hp to 240hp so yea its slower. Not a bad car , gets good MPG I have had only 1 issue with mine and it gets as high as 34mpg on the highway. For FWD when you start getting over 300hp to the wheels it gets terrible , Been there done that.
You guys need a track driver because I have experience and I can make all cars even for a better Hot Lap review what do you say
Should have taken SE model with a sports tunned sus. Suspensions of the tested model (LIMITED with repeaters on side mirrors) are a lot softer.
+duelertakc72
This is a 2.0T SE. Limited has leather. This one does not.
Yay BIG Thank you for a track hot lap for everyday cars!!! I am an everyday man, drives an A4 Cabriolet so this is quite exciting and reasonable than those Top Gears out of reach insane cars. Thanks! I love them!
Now take the Fusion Ecoboost 2.0T 240hp!
Nice. Please try the accord sport
Sonata turbo does 0-60 in 6 seconds or less. Try manual , traction control off. You're welcome. You can check other videos on youtube.
i have seen this car doing 0-60 in 6 second how do u get almost 9 sec
because the eco mode is on.
i can do in my car 6.8 sec
don't forget the elevation. that makes a huge difference in acceleration times. the turbo helps, but there's still a big drag because of the air density difference.
The elevation. And he was brake boosting. The ecu will dump the boost if you try and brake boost
Do not power brake the sonata. The ecu will cut power to protect the drive line. Fastest 0-60 and 1/4 mile are from just mashing the gas
1:14 for the lap time is what the 435i ran.
2013/2014 Honda accord coupe v6 - when we can see a review of it? Thank you in advance for your response.
Okay so I've looked everywhere to find the review on the 2014 Hyundai Sonata limited review that the fast lane car did on the car and I'm still stuck on trying to find it. Could the fast lane car or somebody possibly send me a link to the review that the fast lane car did please? Thanks so much everybody!! :)
Amazed it was that much faster than the Mazda. Thought the Mazda would carry more speed through the corners
That shouldn't be surprising considering this has 90 hp more than the Mazda.
Yeah but considering its turbo lag and comfort biased suspension I would've thought the gap much smaller
freeman Geiger There isnt that much turbo lag on this car surprisingly.
Very true. Kicks in good on the straights
ReggaeDubSoundSystem that's the benefit of the scroll turbo ...
Using the paddles shifter would probably yield better results.
they need a new landscaper i can't believe all the grass clippings on the track!!!
I'm pretty sure that between the 2005(?) Sonata my family has and the two 2003 Sonatas my grandparents had, 0-60 times have suffered a bit. I'm pretty sure I'm pulling off 75 seconds or better.
I want to see the Lexus GS 350 F Sport do a hot lap and see how it goes against the BMW's lap.
1:14.39 is the time of the Sonata around the track right?
Then why when Roman shows the time to both cameras they show the opposing views to we don't actually get to see the phone screen? Seems a bit dodgy to me.
You are doing it wrong Roman! The Sonata 2.0t has a system that cut power to the engine of you are holding the brake and gas pedal at the same time. This car should do 0 - 60 in abt 6.1 seconds "ish"
When are you guys going to do this with a 2015 awd v6 Chrysler 200?
What the heck? My Sonata goes from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds. And it's only 190 horsepower.
You should test the altima on that track
Small possibly. Your times could be getting better because your getting more familiar with the track. Just a small part of it.
shame they cheapened the look of it since the original 2011 model. The lower bumper trim (front and rear) is now unpainted vs body color on the earlier ones.
It's the "sporty" trend now a day. The same black plastic is on the back...as a fake splitter (most new cars have this including BMW). I have a 2011 limited as one of my cars and it does look more upclass...although it did not feel it orinally (road noise, harsh ride). Thank god for after market suspension and MLV
My 2011 sonata se can do it in 6 seconds flat in Denver.
That 0-60 time is so off, Mine does it in less than 7 and it is stock too.
i was not expecting that it would be that slow but then again 6k feet above sea level. im guessing high 6s at sea level.
Wow! I think this falls in line somewhere in the middle between the supporters and detractors. I've had my 2013 SE 2.0T since April of 2013 and it's been a fun car to drive within it's segment. A family car, grocery getter! Anyone expecting high performance out of this car will be disappointed, as it should be. That said, it does a respectable 6 second zero to sixty and responds well at speed to acceleration. In regards to the interior and all the "plastics". I've seen better and worse. All in all for just south of $27K, with all the add-ons, it won't disappoint the market for which it was intended in my opinion. I have noticed a slightly better throttle response using 91 octane.
You CANNOT break boost this car. This review is not fairly weighted towards the sonata. Very missleading coming from an owner who is and was highly impressed by its ability to outrun just about anything in its competition and more! Break boosting limits the turbo to half of its full 17.4psi stock pressure. U probably already knew this though didn't you??? lol
270 hp? That's crazy I have the 06 rated at 235 HP I keep it pretty well maintained oil changes air filter good spark plugs and it does 0-60 a lot.. and I mean a lot faster than that. Maybe cause its a v6? Or maybe this the altitude is a huge difference? I can hear his his car shifting twice before 60. My car shifts out of second gear at like 80 and it goes 0-60 in toughly 6 seconds. That car doesn't even peel out. My car when I 0-60 burns some rubber.
I have higher end spark plugs and air filter than stock thats about it. And yeah its about 6.1 on 0 ~ 60
the 1 mile above sea level makes huge difference especially on turbo cars I get 5.5-6secs stock
You an hit 5.9-6s easily if you went off correctly
Roman you can't brake boost a Sonata when you do the ECU limits boost to 10psi.
he probably knows he is clearly nit a fan of Hyundai his review of car was very unprofessional he knows he is 1mile above sea level which adds 2-3 secs to times and he acts like an ass
pretty close to the 435...i am impressed lol
For the people below fighting over how crappy this car is or is not, let me just say that it's very hard to get a girl wet with a "Hyundai"
Dont think anyones buying a sonata to get a girl wet lmao.
hows 'bout it
I guess you should be worried about that if you rely on your car to get you laid, but that sounds like a personal problem.
Well jeez if you need a car to get a chick wet then maybe you have some serious issues
Can do 6.40
@ISSA VIBEZ I did a 7.3
@ISSA VIBEZ funny. So what mods do you have because I work at a BMW dealership. Interested on hearing what's done do it
@ISSA VIBEZ so what motor does it have because only the m5 series is able to achieve it
@@HurstTheHybrid W
Just because it's turbo does not mean it is just like the Freaken jetta! It's a good sleeper how about you know that before you review it. You need to know your cars before you talk about them. And no I do not drive one I drive a tuned 350z and I know my quick cars. It more or less competes with the accord v6 if you look at HP and space.
Brake boosting does not work for that car.I have the 2012 an mines do off the line 6.2 on a gd day.
Theres a spot mode option on my steering wheel. Is that just steering?
now accord v6
2.0 Litre turbo engine makes 100mph in 8.6? Fukin sucks..
this is a 6 sec car this is a mile above sea level it takes 2-3 secs off time
PGm issa I dusted a BMW with my Sonata 2.0t shit sounds like a jet at night full speed
Did Hyundai ever fix the steering on this?
Next model year, total redesign.
I had a 2011 Sonata 2.0 turbo and it accelerated way better by just stomping on the gas. Don't Torque it.
Why are you reviewing a car that's been around since 2011? It's been reviewed at least half dozen times already.
It isn't a review at all. This is the first time they have had a chance to take it around this track. Consider it a data point. It serves as a comparison for competing cars.
Refreshed how? It looks exactly the same. An all new version is coming out for the 2015 model year. THAT Sonata I'm interested in hearing about.
no wheel spin even on "cheap" oem tires and 280 hp... my 15 year old accord does better than that, even at higher altitudes.. but it is a v6. 200 hp 195 torque
Because you not use brake pedal and gas pedal to rev the engine, I think you get best time
He showed it to both of the cameras at the wrong time both times
Does it Matter we can't drive over 80mph (legally) anyway! If you like the car get the car! Dammit
5:25 Smotry...... what the word ? First time hear
Do the Optima Turbo!
my stock 2.0t does 0-60 in about 6 seconds no way it can be 8
The Filth same
To The Fast Lane Car because you not use the brake and gas pedal to get best torque in the rev of the Engine power? That trick for best time in 60 and 1/4 miles
how many times will these ppl try brake boosting before realizing that it's clearly making the car slower... Every other review is in the 6 seconds sometimes in the 5. With all their experience with cars they should know better.
what gas did you run?
Who in their right mind tracks a Hyundai Sonata anyway? I understand the comparison to the other cars, but really? They engineered this car as a commuter appliance to get people to and from work cheaply, not as a refined sporting car like the BMW....I'm surprised that went so slowly around.
they are to get to and from work cheaply? sonatas are a nice car dude have you ever been in one they are fresh and they pick up and handle well.
Normal people take off traction control on a track. Please try it some time
When I take the traction control off on my Sonata, one tire or the other breaks loose and smokes, then soon after that it feels like there is some sort of traction control that kicks in anyway and seems to reduce the power. Very annoying. The smoking tires looks impressive though.
My 2011 sonata turbo hits a 060 in from 5.8 to 6.1. the thing with the turbo is you have to ease in with the pedal, if you just floor it, its slow as fuck
+Jonathan Martinez i noticed this the other day
The o - 60 is 6.90
It is a 8 sec car and people deal with it it can not go 0-60 in 6 sec it was tested in normal conditions it went 0-60 in 7.4 sec
Tested in Australia 0-100=7.8 sec
eco mode off... and it will go faster
Nice
For you to launch this car you must left foot brake mash the gas with right same time you release brakes.
Put it in tiptronic and it does go alot quicker
he should've use the paddle shifters.
Christ! My Grand Marquis is faster than that.
Porque não mostraram o tempo em que o carro percorreu a pista na tela do celular?
This car does have a sport mode dude, put the shifter to the left, smh
You’re lucky the engine didn’t catch fire.
Needs a new transmission!
turbooooooo
I don't know what's wrong with that car, i have a hyundai sonata 2012, and is pretty faster than that one, 0-60 only takes 7.005 sec, in manual mode, hyundais are good cars, and very confortable,if u want one better check the hyundai genesis coupe 3.8 lit, have a nice day mother...
I did 7.2 seconds in my sonata 2011 turbo
first off you killed the time by trying to break boost and spool the turbo these cars dont do this because of the ecu second mine with simple canned tune intake does 5.3 0-60 this is really not representitive of this car
Yeh I have a 2013T and its much faster hey are using now a smaller turbo charger.
hey man is maintenance expensive on it, because am considering the same 2013 2.0t
It's not to bad just gotta change air filter and spark plugs more often on the turbo. And make sure u use synthetic oil.
ok man so how often I gotta change those stuff
Yikes!!! That was scary!!!
Now can we get 60-0,..... and slalom, ...... and a Russian stig, ......and a carwash noise test,.... and crash test data, .......and a is this car better than a unicorn test...... lol
THERE IS A SPORT MODE! ITS ON THE STEERING WHEEL
Are you talking about the paddle shifters, or is there an actual mode? I have the Hyundai and have not seen it. Thanks
the sport mode button on the wheel has nothing to do with the engine its the power steering
if u drive with the eco mode off it will go faster
Poor poor demonstration...it is not a "leisure take off". You need to use the paddle shifters, take the traction control off and launch it!!! Then take the 0 to 60 test...very disappointed in this demo...I have this same exact car and year and it's quick!!!! I love it!!! Honda and Audi owners dont expect her to get up and to like she does!!!
You can't brake boost these cars, you will loose over a full second 0-60. My Optima Turbo stock with the same engine goes 6.4 0-60. Very unprofessional review.
The computer limits boost when you brake boost to 10lbs. Normal boost is almost 18lbs. 1st and 2nd gear are torque limited. Getting a tune removes this, and the car screams. The motor is the same as the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO.
6.4? That's slow. My turbo sonata does it in 5.6
Yea I never heard of any stock 2.0T doing it less than 6.4. Yours must be magical or your timing system is wrong. I am using a $500 g-force computer to time mine.
Anthony Sole where are you? Are you above sea level? Optimas are about half a second slower than sonatas. Weigh less. Look up sonata 0-60 times. Many are 5.6-5.7 secs. Mine with 93 octane, k&n filter and full synthetic oil its running 5.56 seconds. Take the traction control off and put it in tip tronic and mash it. Let the gears change for you
Anthony Sole if your above sea level then you'll be much slower. Turbos loose a lot of power at higher altitudes
You can’t drive bro I hit 0-60 in 6.40 with wet roads😂😂
my 2.5L malibu does it in 7 seconds lol how?
Why they never use + & -
did this car have premium fuel in the tank?
Hyundai's turbos run on regular fuel ... might do better on premium however.
Dwayne Sealy might do better? I get about 9 HP increase from 91 octane and a 13-15 horse increase from 93 octane. The motor runs better with full synthetic oil as well. With 93 octane gas, Mobil 1 synthetic and a k&n filter I put down 255 whp on dyno. At the crank which is always rated by the manufacturer it would be about 295 HP. That's a 20 horse increase. At sea level I am consistently pulling 5.5 sec 0-60 times, where as before it was about 5.7
A mile above sea level really reduces times, especially on turbo and supercharged cars
Chris Huber this is good news to note ... will definitely keep in mind for when we pick up our 2.0T Sonata. Will most likely stick with Royal Purple full synthetic along with the K&N filter. And definitely a rotor/pad change
Dwayne Sealy what year you getting?
I thought the 2014 had the new taillights
Yeah me too...Thought I was the only one that noticed supposed to be LED's
Nope. New LED taillights are only for Limited + tech package.
frankzhlew yup
In Canada all of them have it, not in the US though (ltd. + tech only)
Roman you need a skip barber class or get a stigg..
Nah he can drive quite well, it just looks slow on video.
I think that lap showed that you get what you pay for. Pretty bad body control, poor steering, and forgettable brakes. All sentiments I've had from driving that car. Hyundai put little to no effort into driving dynamics of this car - they're all about selling on a value quotient. The reason why I'll pick an Accord or Passat - they both come from more established brands with more expertise of rolling refinement into a package that doesn't feel like a penalty box when driven aggressively. Hyundai just isn't there yet.
Consider the class though, these are not sports cars. Also, here are some numbers for you. Edmunds sonata 60-0 = 120ft while the accord took 128ft and the passat took 131ft. Also, the sonata pulled a 0.84g avg compared to 0.82 on the accord and 0.81 on the passat. Accord and passat do have better steering FEEL (have to agree). Although, the Sonata is quieter according to edmunds at 62 db (@ 70) compared to the accords 63.5 and passats 69.0. BASICALLY, the car is fairly good for the oldest design out of the three. Brakes and grip are there, they need to worry about steering FEEL, transmission and ride quality.
A 1.8 passat still does 8 seconds
fair point ... however it should be noted that the Sonata isn't even promoted as a 'sport' model. The strong selling point (which was proven here in the 'lap' times, is the prowess of the twin scroll turbo. If you consider all the players in the market, very few of them will provide with both refined handling AND decent power for a price near the Sonata Turbo or Kia Optima for that matter (same car). That said, Hyundai has done well thus far in styling, packaging, power, and interior refinement. I imagine that the next focus will be on braking, suspensions and transmissions. As the owner of an '07 Santa Fe I can say that those are some areas that could definitely use some attention. That said, I didn't buy a Santa Fe because I wanted BMW X5 performance.
It still ran a good lap time coming it in 2nd
Honda saved money with the accord's braking system big time, their brake lines rust out when everyone else uses metals that won't rust and the oem pads are a lower quality pad because they save more money per unit. - It's the whole segment, offer the most car for the lowest price, make what they see flashy and cut where they don't see. - Does VW still use plastic water pumps?
lol a 2010 ford fusion 4cyl gets 8.1...
Dude is not driving that car right I have that car right now and have hit 60 in a faster time then that.
There a newer model than this one
I drove my mom's car and the 0-60 of faster than that
My bicycle is faster than this Sonata !!!!!
