This is a great solution for me since I’m a professional musician who uses iPad in Portrait to read sheet music and my home computer is a Mac Mini for Logic and MuseScore. This would let me use my iPad as my Mac Mini monitor when I’m teaching lessons outside of my home and need to use programs that aren’t on iOS.
wich adaptor do you use for hdmi? how do you keep the iPad charged while using the adaptor? THANKS
This is fantastic! I honestly never thought of my Mac mini as portable!
That is the coolest thing I learned this month. Thanks.
Great video! Thank you!
This is literally amazing, i’ve been searching all over the internet and youtube how to connect my mac mini to my ipad without paying for apps ! Thank you so much sir very helpful, as a mobile dj with a mac mini i’ll be able to use a powerful device without bringing a huge tv monitor with me
TY! Your solution is great for when a monitor fails (or gets fiddly) and you need backup. But it’s even better for headless Mac Mini (or Studio) setup and maintenance. Furthermore, this is great to make Mac Mini/Studio travel-worthy… without some (huge or fiddly mini) monitor. I already have an iPad so using it makes all the sense in the world, and reduces extra gear (like buying/carrying a monitor just to get a headless computer running). Thank you!
Thank you this is really cool. Looking at buying an ipad soon & never thought of doing this.
Oh yes, this was interesting. Have to think of some scenarios still but the idea is GREAT. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent presentation… thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Soo neat! it works and works well thank you :)
Awesome 😎
Thx! Already had an ipad and was planning to buy a macbook, but thx to this i think i can replace the macbook with mac mini instead!
This was fantastic and worked perfectly. Thank you for making this. I changed the resolution on the Mac mini to make it larger, but haven’t found a perfect solution to getting rid of black border in cameo.
In CAMO, you can play with the templates to change borders - that may work - I’ll need to test this.
Very interesting. Has your test been conclusive? Thanks.
I got a 2018 ipad pro to use as a laptop while im saving for an m1 macbook. I got an ipad because I can still use it after I get my macbook. I cant wait to use use it as a second screen!
Lots of wisdom in this channel 👌🙌
thanks frank!
Thanks for letting me know about camo Studio
Very neat hack. 😊 Wish I had this a while ago. Really needed it on a trip back then.
It’s a good solution in a pinch.
Trying to do this with my iPad and m2. External video source is selected l, but it’s not detecting Mac mini.
Fantastic
I have an iPad 2 and a Mac Mini can you explain how I use both? Thank you.
Hi! Its posible the combination with mac mini late 2014 with iPad mini 6?
Great video, Frank! Thanks! I'm just wondering if you can use SIDECAR simultaneously with your set-up.
I haven’t tied that - but now it’s on my list!
i'm using a nextech keyboard with trackpad and tv, and hope to use ipad when i dont want to use the tv and keyboard. not for taking it outside of home, just want to use the mac mini not on a desk. i'll be using the mac mini mostly as our iphones backup/transfer for photos. dont want icloud plans and accidental transfers of videos/photos over mobile network. i dont work cables though..the mac mini will sit on some furniture, and i use it from my bed etc.
Love this idea. Is it possible to use an iPad keyboard such as a Logitech slim combo that works with my iPad?
It depends on the keyboard - if it’s Bluetooth then yes. There are even some keyboards that can pair to multiple devices, so you could pair with the iPad AND the Mac Mini and switch between them.
I have one somewhere and will test this - great idea!
What will work wireless on a 2011 Intel Mac Mini to M2 IPad Pro? Thanks.
Hi, superb! I don’t know this can be done. But why can’t you use the iPod keyboard and trackpad with Continuity feature as the mac keyboard? They are on the same wifi and Apple id right?
Actually this should work
i use the chrome remote desktop ipad app to remote into my 2009 imac with my ipad. how can i do the same to remote into a 2012 mac mini?
Thanks
Thank you! That’s very kind and I appreciate it
Nice !
Can you KVM the iPad without keyboard and mouse to Mac Mini? I’d like to do that.
I am trying to use an old Mac mini i5 and see if I can use my iPad with air play?
Is there something that is a higher resolution than the 1080 P? Is there anyway I can use apple Magic Keyboard (with trackpad embedded) with mini?
I have an old gen1 iPad Air running iOS 12.5.7… cam studio won’t work on it… any suggestions for an alternative app?
Thank you for posting this, i was just wondering about this.
Very cool. I have an iPad with lightning connector. Is there a hdmi-to-lightning adapter that can be used rather than the USB? Thanks so much. 🎵
I haven’t found one … yet! 😀
The thing is to check the compatibility of the software with your model of iPad as well. CAMO Studio doesn’t work with every iPad
Would it be possible to plug my iPhone 15 on my older iPad?
Great video! wow i am now the 1000 like... incredible!
Could you also do something similar with a windows laptop that you would plug a mac mini into and could easily switch operating systems? I have a gaming pc I don't want to part with but I need the mac for other things I'm doing and I already have an iPod pro 2022 model for my portable work. How would you go about doing this?
So… the answer is yes. However, it’s a little involved.
You would been the HDMI input - same as here.
Then you would need some software to “play” that input. There are many video editing, Livestreaming, recording software that do this, but you would want something really simple.
I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I’ll figure it out and see what I can find.
Interesting setup! Would it also work using the MacBook Air as screen ? (I was planning buying MBA anyway, though I have no need for a new IPad (Air)
The short answer is yes. However, the longer answer is that the MacBook Air won’t run the software I demonstrate in this video.
So you would need to use different software. The HDMI Input cable still works on a desktop. This is a video I can make.
It’s something that I find handy for tutorials and such. So I’ll get that into my schedule to film. It won’t be a MacBook Air (I don’t have one), but I do have an older 2015 MacBook somewhere around here that I can use to demo.
AstroPad is a wireless device that plugs into a USB-C port on my mini and it works great. You first load a free app on the mini, open it, open the app on your iPad and it automatically detects it and done! I just got it last week to turn my 2017 iMac into a primary screen for the mini when I’m at home. So with one tiny device I saved my beautiful 27” screen from oblivion and have both an iPad AND a MacOS screen for the mini. Mac Continuity automatically shares the keyboard and mouse across devices also without wires.
$79 one time price and no subscriptions. Very cost effective and efficient powerhouse flexible system! 😊🎉
I will absolutely check that out.
Do we need to do a first time configuration with the mac mini connected to a monitor first before we can use camo studio to connect the mac mini to the ipad ?
Nope! I used this video to connect my brand new Mac mini up to my iPad Pro and it worked instantly. I used the iPad to set up the Mac mini!
Great Video and great idea (like always). Thanx and greetings from Germany. 👍
Thank YOU!
Works with wifi direct very good
Camo is not showing the capture card as an option ? Any help I have iPad Air 4th gen running iOS 17.3
same here, dont know what to do
Does it require an adapter? I have a hdmi to usb-c cable (HDMI out from MacMini directly into the USB-C port on IPad) and Camo doesn’t recognize the “capture card” it just says “none” in the drop down. OK just tried it with an adapter and it still doesn’t work…. Is there a minimum hardware version for the Mac mini? Mine is from 2012… Does it need a silicon M series?
I'm having the same issue and I have a Mac mini m2 pro
Thank you!! Does it support HDR brightness of the Mini LED-Display of the 13“ iPad for color grading of HDR Video in Final Cut?
I haven't tried that - I'm not a Final Cut user - so I'm not quite sure about that :)
@@LearningandTechnology Okay, thank you. Is there any way to get the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad‘s inputs into the Mac? Than we would almost have the full macOS on iPad experience.
It seems like a very good solution to me, I bought a cable on one end that has USB C and the other HDMI to connect to a mini Mac, but it doesn't give me an option, after I chose "external video", no device show up.
The cable you need is the one I link to in the description (it’s not expensive) - it has for input rather than output.
Is there an option to fill up the black bars on top & bottom and go full screen?
The full screen will maintain the aspect ratio of the Mac - don’t may be possible if you adjust the display settings in OSX. I haven’t tried this yet, but will check.
Such a great video! Question.. does it HAVE to be a capture card? Could I simply use a usb c to hdmi cable with camo ? How about latency? Any issues ?
@@techmap4191 it does need to be the capture card - it requires the INPUT direction. Fortunately, they are reasonably priced - I linked to one below.
I bought the same one but it still doesn't detect the Mac mini, do you have a more exact description of the cable? thanks for your help
I have a link in the description to the exact one I’m using. It has to be HDMI capture
Great !
Sir the portable keyboard is not linked ; could you please reply with a link ; if you have suggestion how to use MacBook as a screen for the Mac mini please let me know the cable and software to use
thanks
You’re very welcome
Is there an app for macOS like Camo Studio?
That’s a great use of a Mini! I like laptops but this is a pretty good pen/touch Mac (Macbooks with touch/pen don’t really exist in any official capacity)
Good video, straight to the point and very helpful. I could see myself using this but currently looking for a wireless solution. I’m wondering if it would be difficult to write a program that will automatically mirror when the Mac is turned on.
That would be cool indeed. I have an idea around this… just need to test some things…
This is a very good solution, and it has helped me a lot. However, I still want to ask if there is a way to solve the current top and bottom black bars in the Como studio?
I haven’t been able to get those gone - yet. I’m trying to figure out a way by changing the display properties on the Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology thanks for help !
Hey hey ,, awesome well presented info,, was just wondering if
1. it’s possible to draw directly on the iPad screen , using the Apple Pencil
2. Also if softwares like toonboom can be installed on the Mac mini m2 and worked on ! Drawn etc on the iPad screen ( of course saved on Mac mini) that WOULD BE AWESOME …
Been thinking about this ..and walla I see your awesome video here 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Sadly, the iPad in this scenario is strictly a one-way display. It doesn’t feed “back” to the Mac Mini.
@@LearningandTechnology appreciate timely reply sir, I had a feeling it wouldn’t work ..saved me from buying up stuff on impulse 😅,, installing toonboom on a regular laptop and working with a regular Wacom tab would do the job just fine for me just fine 🙏
@@storyboardman9459 if you have the Wacom tablet already then that’s a fantastic choice.
Is iMac (late 2014) with Big Sur MacOS can be connected to an iPad Pro M1?
Does it charge the iPad as you use it? or does it rain the battery? what accessories can you use to have the iPad connected as your screen and charge at the same time
I was wondering the same thing. Is the fix as simple as just connecting with a USB-C to USB-C cable?
How do you KVM the iPad? (Use Mac mini as iPad tablet mode without ext keyboard/mouse?)
This is just the V part of KVM. You do need a keyboard and pointing device (I use a little Bluetooth folding keyboard and a touch pad - very compact.
Would connecting a hdmi to lighting cable work instead of the adapter
Unfortunately no. The adapter is an INPUT and the HDMI is an OUTPUT.
So you need the capture adapter. They aren’t too expensive though - check out the link in the description. They are between $15-$25
Great video and great concept! One question: Do you use Camo Studio rather than using Apple Sidecar because it is better or (perhaps) because your iPad doesn't support Sidecar? Thank you!
Good question! Sidecar is when you want to use your iPad as a second monitor. In this set up, I want to use my iPad as the main (and only) monitor. So that’s how CAMO Studio helps.
@@LearningandTechnology Thank you!
i have buy a type c to HDMI cable (not adapter but directly cable) to follow the video but it doesn't work :(
You need the capture card (link in description) It’s not very expensive.
Can you charge your iPad while doing this? Or only if you have the iPad case that takes a charger? And I’m guessing you can’t use that iPad keyboard/trackpad built into the case to do work on the Mac mini?
If you enable continuity on your mac and ipad you can actually then use the ipads keyboard and trackpad.
I got a cable that has HDMI on one end and USB C on the other and it didn't work 😪 Is it possible that it doesn't work because I don't have an adapter? I mean: should I have an end to end hdmi cable and this cable connect it to a usb c adapter?
It has to be an HDMI input adapter (link in description) it may be that you have an output adapter - which most of the ones are.
This is a great solution for working from bed - I have my ipad mounted on an arm over my head, split keyboard by my sides. My bad back thanks you!
And what’s the oldest iPad I can get to get it working as a main display with the Mac Mini? Thanks
When you go to download the free CAMO Studio it has a list of compatible iPads - they need to be slightly newer
is there a way to power the iPad while using it? Thanks a lot
I think there are some adaptors with multiple ports which include HDMI in addition to USB-C so you can feed power to the iPad while it’s connected
Camo Studio doesn't work with older ipads. Alternative?
New iPad.
Is it possible to use the ipad as a monitor while charging the ipad?
hi how are doing learning technology i need some thing from ottawa
Great video, can you use iPad’s Magic Keyboard and scroll pad?
Unfortunately not. It’s because the Mac mini requires either Bluetooth or connected devices.
@@LearningandTechnology thanks for your response, I will be using FCP for 4k travel editing, will you recommend me mac mini 8gb ram 512 gb storage or 16gb ram 256gb storage?
Hi there, will this work on an iPad with a Lightening connector or must it have USB 2?
It does need to be a newer iPad. You need to have an iPad that you can run CAMO Studio on as well as find an HDMI capture cable for
Okay, thank you for that. I'll wait until I need a new iPad - I generally use the MacMini at home, anyway, with my existing monitors. Many thanks for your lightening USB 2 response! @@LearningandTechnology
i dont know if the question is dumb, but if i connect my ipad via hdmi->usb c to my windows laptop, it should also work with camo studio as a second display, right? Great Video
Not dumb at all!
It won’t work exactly like that - you need the input cable - so the one I link in the description. However, it can work and I’ll do a video on that for everyone
It works great!
I made a video for you
How to Use an iPad as a Second Windows Display
ua-cam.com/video/S9XUrMydkuI/v-deo.html
Can you just use the magic keyboard connected to your iPad instead of having to use the extra keyboard and mouse ?
Did you ever find out because I am curious to know also
Thanks Tim Cooky
@@azuki2780 oh how I wish that was true. I’d be happy with 10% of his wealth 😀
Nice thus this need an iPad Pro though or would an iPad Air be enough?
The CAMO App has a list of compatible iPads it can run on. Any of them will work.
Yam Display app is more than enough
My stuff in road:
- Mac mini
- USB to Lightning cord
- iPad
- Ecoflow River 2
- Keyboard Prestigio Click&Touch 2
There are a few options - I like CAMO Studio for this and more. It actually has many more features besides just the screen input.
I’ll have to check out some of the things you mentioned too.
@@LearningandTechnology I use Camo for iPhone as Web cam. But Yam is great too. Working by standard usb cable. And can run automatically when Mac starts.
@@max_tube I’m definitely going to check it out - thanks!
Thanks so much Yam is so good
@@carter6041Definitely! My Air M1 now has 2 monitors ))))
Thanks for the video. Can you get the audio from iPad's speakers and can you be able to use iPad's magic keyboard with this set up?
No need to put audio on the iPad. Mac Mini has audio natively.
@@richardcalifice2352The native audio on the macmini is rubbish. He's asking if the audio can come out of the ipad, which has fantastic audio. I'm asking the same.
Can use android tablet as a first monitor instead of ipad
Dang. Wish I had seen this a month ago!
luna display headless mode is, what I went for with a Mac.
I haven’t tried that (maybe they’ll reach out to sponsor a video!). It’s a little more expensive, but does look promising.
I don't see the link of the HDMI adapter, I have one, but only get Crome to the ipad, with no audio, no desktop of the mac mini also no test pattern
Here’s the link amzn.to/4a0t2ru
This is an INPUT cable and is the one needed. Fortunately, they are not too expensive and have other uses to (I some other videos on connecting game systems for example)
Hey nice. Two questions -
First can we run literally any program of mac studio that show up in ipad ?
Second
Will ipad works as main screen using this app with mac studio as well ?
Yes and yes!
Will there be lag in using it ?
@@Hiniuolo I haven’t tested games, but everything I’ve used has worked well
Thanis
Magic Keyboard work with mac mini ?
Do you mean the iPad one? No.
@@LearningandTechnology yes with ipad one , thank you
@@i3bady9 ah… sadly not. It would be nice. I just use the tiny folding one - it’s okay.
Can we use the keyboard that’s connected to ipad to control the mac mini? That would make it a real mac book killer.
That would be awesome indeed - but the Magic Keyboard does not have this magic :)
A Bluetooth keyboard is the way to go this this setup.
will it work on ipad 9th gen which has lighting port
In the App Store, all the compatible iPads are listed for Camo Studio. You would need the correct adapter of course.
Can i use iPads camera as a webcam?
How is Camo Studio compared to Sidecar?
Sidecar is more to add an additional screen. CAMO can make it the primary screen (with the adapter)
Can you do this with an HP mini PC?
Yes - as long as it has HDMI out (most do), then the adapter for the iPad (linked in the description) will accept the signal and CAMO Studio on the iPad will show it.
If you can set your output to 4:3 ratio, then you can take advantage of a full iPad screen (rather than have black bars top and bottom)
Genius thanks! I'm thinking of a MacBook Air but maybe I'll do this instead!
This is great if you already have the iPad and Mac Mini. An Air is basically a complete system in one - so it sort of depends on how you intend to use things and what you may already have.
Does this setup still work ? I’ve downloaded the software but I don’t see the options you’re taking about; maybe they’ve updated the software
Do you have the correct adapter? HDMI input. Not the typical output ones
@@LearningandTechnology you have a point; I used one of the Anker hubs with hdmi, I’ll order the one you have and try again
@@simonleesax4788 It’s a common error. The HDMI Input is the “secret” to making this work. They are quite inexpensive and have some fun uses (like this video), but basically - any device that needs a screen. So you can use the adapter/CAMO set-up to attach game systems, laptops, etc. - it’s worth the few dollars it costs.
Is this going to work with the iPad mini 6?
If you go to the App Store and look at CAMO Studio - it will list all compatible devices.
App link
It's a bit unfortunate, that you can obviously not use the Magic Keyboard and Trackpad. That would remove the necessity for the external devices. Maybe there is an App which makes this possibles?
There is another way. A bus powered wifi router. You can velcro it onto to the Mac mini. Then use screen sharing to connect to the Mac mini. I use this to connect to MainStage on the Mac mini from iPad.
This is a great tip! The only real surprise for me is why, in 2024, Apple hasn't realized they need to do this natively.
Agreed!
You can though, with sidecar.
Does it work with windows and nice vid
@@niichan3291 it does - I did a video showing it with Windows as well. Basically the same setup.
it would be so fuckin dope if it had iPad Pro Magic Keyboard support
