      If I was a betting man they will not due to the mirrorless lineup, I agree it would be nice but there is a lot of Sigma and Tamron lenses out there that are better and cheaper in regards to optics. IMO

      @@aceflibble New camera systems are not meant for making people switch. Most of the potential $2500+ lens buyers own multiple systems anyways. I don't have to switch anywhere, I can just use my current EF lenses on R cameras. And all of the good old EF pro optics work just fine on the R series too. We don't have to buy the new L "behemoths" at all.
      "There is no camera system in history that has ever been first adopted by the general public" - Really? What about Sony? What about m4/3? What about Fuji? What about Nikon Z? They all didn't start with huge and the most expensive pro optics. Nikon has plenty of decent, affordable G and E optics ready to be adapted to their Z series, before they cover it with native refresh that is already coming. The problem with Canon is that half of their 30-year-old budget USM glass is completely useless by today's standards.
      "They have to get the pros on board first" - With what? With EOS R? Seriously? It's a consumer level camera with controls borrowed from the $500 Rebel SL series. Canon is simply denying the existence of photography enthusiasts. They only make "advanced amateur" type of cameras at best, like the 90D, with the next step being semi-pro and pro levels.
      Look what Nikon is doing. They offer sub-$1000 lenses right away. So did Sony and others. Well, Canon did make the RF35F1.8Macro, which is completely unimpressive lens considering all the amazing things they've promised with the new wide short flange mount. Turns out, it's all marketing BS. The only way they can produce better optics is by making them huge, heavy and expensive.
      "what they should have done is started of with a high-end body to match the high-end lenses" - This I can absolutely agree on. Canon's camera crippling traditions must end now, or else ... Even the M6 Mark II looks like a higher class camera than the EOS R.

    This lens works perfectly with my canon m50 using both the standard adapter and the viltrox speedbooster. I’ve had it about a year now. Been very happy with it for this camera. I think you are correct about it being compatible with dual pixel autofocus cameras.
    I guess I lucked out, did not realize it had so much hardware compatibility issues before I purchased it. Had I realized that I might not have bought it though! So I’m glad I didn’t know, since it has been terrific value for the money in my case and I would have missed out.

As much as the Yongnuo lenses appeal on-price to a beginner like me, the local used market for lenses without Yongnuo's sorts of problems is plentiful enough that I wouldn't be able to justify dealing with Yongnuo's issues, either for reduced image quality on their 50mm, or on technical problems like this one.

    I have this lens - had for a couple of years now. Worked GREAT on my Canon 7DII. Then I got a Canon M5 (has dual-pixel auto focus). Auto focus will not work at all, not even once. Yongnuo's response to me when I contacted them about it is that this lens was not programmed to support live view auto focus, which is basically what all mirrorless cameras are. I'm surprised it worked with the M3 and EOS R for you, honestly.

    1:20 Sensor does not affect depth of field, it only crops the image in. With full frame you just get a wider angle image with the same depth of field as with APS-C. I watched a lot of test videos and seen too many people arguing, so I had to point it out :D Crop factor applies only to focal lengh.

    Honestly, Yongnuo lenses are not a bad buy. I have Yongnuo 50mm f1.4 and I can say that it is better than Nikon 50mm f1.8G and Pentax 50mm f1.8 which I had in the past. At f2 Yongnuo wipes out Nikon 50mm. Moreover, colours reproduction is very nice and punchy. Autofocus is maybe noisy and little bit slow, but very accurate. Even Sigma 35mm f1.4 is not so accurate (otherwise it is superb lens).

    It’s not a bad lens. My only grip is that it’s very prone to flare depending on the situation due to its cheap coatings which I think I probably rubbed off when cleaning the front and rear elements but I think a hood would fix that. For portraits it’s immaculate for the price but it’s definitely not for everyone.

    This lens is not clear corner to corner at F8 full frame (Nikon). But the centre part gives adequate peak sharpness. Also even a lens hood (matching filter size) cannot entirely cure the low contrast in some even innocent cases. If you have a lot of prime lenses you will despise this lens. If you are at the other extreme in terms of lens inventory, you may find this cost effect for people, flowers and water birds but not for scenery unless you shoot at F10 or F11.

      I'm sure it's not the greatest, but I last used it most in the studio. Fringing doesn't really bother me now because it's so easy to get rid of convincingly in software. I used to use a Hasselblad 40mm CF FLE as a primary lens on a digital back. It has terrible purple fringing, but software killed 99 percent of it easily, and it's still also one of the best lenses I've ever used. I just loved the characteristics of the color when I backlit with sunset (as I am wont to do), and even with "normal" studio lighting, there was just something I loved about how it rendered that I've never really found in another lens.

    I think that the only thing that this channel needs to be perfect is to also find a way to test how accurate the auto-focus is. This lens has great optics, but the auto-focus seems to be weak, frequently back-focusing on the Canon version, the Nikon version seems to work better. Since people that buy this lens won't probably have a camera that offers micro-adjusting, it can pretty much make the lens unusable.

    In this and other reviews, APSC has worse quality, especially in the corners - does anyone have a technical explanation why this is the case? APSC should only “look” at the center of the full frame image, resulting in sharper corners. Is this all due to the smaller pixels?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  4 роки тому

      Yes, the pixel density on APS-C is much tighter than full frame so it's actually a greater challenge for the lens (unless the lens is VERY sharp in the middle)

    The lens looks sharper on the Sony a7r2 coz of more pixels and the absence of an anti-aliasing filter.

    I had this lens, the glass is really ok, but it had focusing problems after a half year. Beside this there are too much compatibility glitches. After getting a replacement, I sold it and bought a new Canon 85mm F1.8

    Te poor contrast and flare ruins the experience on this lens. I own one of these, and it sucks. The images looks washed out.
    By the way, sharpness and bokeh is impressive for the cost of this lens.

    Are you sure that higher pixel density on APS-C is cause for worse quality ?
    IMO it's the crop factor. You are cropping on the glass and magnifying all of it's flaws
    Sure A7RII does that with more pixels but it's not nearly as bad as on a5100 and those two have similar pixel density
    If you look at large forma 8x10" those lenses are simple (compared to modern primes for fullframe) but they don't suffer that much from any problems like CA or purple fringing since magnification of film is not that big.

    • @celestialemissary4934
      @celestialemissary4934 5 років тому

      @@aceflibble Crop factor is just crop. You crop on the lens. You are not looking at the image circle corners.
      Large format has plenty of resolution. Take a look at a video from Ben Horne "..Pixel Peeping a 709 Megapixel Drum Scan of 8x10 Slide Film"
      Still if it was just pixel density that does not explain the difference between a5100 and a7r2 (since they have similar pixel density)

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 років тому

      It's the pixel density - trust me

    I remember some of YN lenses do have a USB jack, to update the firmware in the future they say. Doesn't this one bear one?

    If these were actually sold for, say, a third or half of the price of a used Canon 100/2, they could possibly make some sense to someone very short of money or for whom this was not an important focal length. Perhaps in the Far East that is what they are sold at. At the cost of a used Canon, they are, as far as I can tell, pointless.

    • @GraesenArnoff
      @GraesenArnoff 4 роки тому

      I don't know about that. Maybe if you're a professional spending thousands on gear but maybe not if you're a hobbyist or beginner. I have this lens. Worked fantastically on my 7DII once I set the auto focus micro adjustments. They explicitly say this lens is not supposed to work with Live View modes on their website (which is what mirrorless cameras only use). Canon does not, at all, in any way, share their auto focus software with 3rd parties. Sigma, Tamron, Rokinon/Samyang, all of them had to or have to reverse engineer the auto focus communication. Yongnuo is one of the newest companies to do that - there will be problems expected.
