OH MY GOSH! I just watched a video by a guy who claims to be a bee keeper who was extracting honey IN THE BEE YARD! He was using a hand-crank extractor and a rolling thing to pierce the comb and killing bees left and right! He got stung under his veil, TWICE, and finally got a head dress that worked. He crushes bees, drops frames, puts honey frames in a "Hive Butler"(?) and leaves the top off of it. It's full of bees! I wanted to reach through the screen and bonk him in the back of the head! He also has very aggressive and angry bees! I had to come back and watch your videos for some sanity! Thanks Kamon!

Mine were bearding due to heat, the metal roof was so hot it was untouchable.
1.5 inch styrofoam board that overlaps every side of the roof by a couple inches fixed it.

This is unrelated to the question of bearding vs swarming, hive stress, etc. I wanted to say thanks for mentioning the Healthy Bee patties. I picked up some, and the girls are just loving it. I tested it against Ultra Bee in some of the hives, and they are feasting on the HB patties and not really doing anything with the UB patties (unless the HB patty is gone). So, thanks!

I made a 6 frame deep nuc and added a purchased queen in June, 2020. I checked to make sure she was laying, then checked again in late July. The bees were stacking a lot of honey on top of the frames, so I added a medium super. A week later, the hive swarmed. I checked the hive a few days later, and found no eggs, no larve, and only old brood that was about to hatch out.
Apparently, the hive got honey bound, and the queen quit laying. Then, she and a third of the bees swarmed on 8/5/2020, with my added super being too late to change their minds. So they swarmed without leaving any swarm cells, or even any eggs/larve to make another queen!!! Ever see that before?
I grabbed a frame of brood from another hive, with very young larve, and stuck it in there to help the remaining bees make a queen. I have seen some drones in my other hives, so I hope it isn't too late in the season to get a virgin mated.
I went back in five days later, and the bees had capped over all the larve, not making any effort to make a queen cell. Must be a virgin in the hive? I should add that they are very calm bees, not acting queenless at all.

Heat.... when it gets too hot inside it'll start to affect brood development. Usually when my bees beard they fan feverishly. I usually put out water pans and fill it and they'll come out to drink and bring water back in the hive which I'm guessing the fanning does an evaporation cooling effect.
4:05 that line dancing is way too cute, I've never noticed that before. That's pretty wild

@@DoubleTopHoneyCo yes, could just be that constant urge to clean, polish & tidy up that bees do on the inside of the hive. A sort of bee OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)!
I can't help wonder though whether its a hive cooling behaviour. If they are separated slightly (not packed tightly) and using their mandibles or tongues in the same direction then maybe they are trying to keep the outside of the hive a tiny bit moist, which might help with evaporation and heat reduction. I've had my maximum entrance reducer on during the hot summer months, now I'm thinking I need to remove it! I have a really strong colony that is bearding every day! Incidentally, it DID swarm and now the bees that remain have raised a new queen. The hive next to it has a laying worker so to save it I'm going to combine the two as soon as I am sure the hive that swarmed is queen-right. I'm concerned that robbing or wax moths will start any day in the weak, laying worker hive!

We have videos on swarming in our playlists. Rarely can you tell the bees are going to swarm by looking at a hive. When you can it is to late to stop them but perhaps you can catch them. The only sure fire way to know what your bees are going to do is get in the hive and see if they have queen cells started. Ways to prevent them from starting cells is to keep the queen in laying room! Make sure the bees have plenty of room to move that nectar AWAY from the brood combs.
